Judges 5:31

Wednesdays in Lent

These Wednesdays in Lent have been enlightening as we explored our “Life Together” from Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s book of the same name. We’ve taken a hard, honest look at postmodernism and seen how our world has become more relativistic, individualistic and willing to hold multiple views that would otherwise seem contradictory. Our life together as Christians exists in this world, whether we like it or not. God very plainly wants us to live in the world, but not to be of the world. More and more I’m convinced that in order for us to be effective in reaching out to this world with the love of Jesus, we need to make sure our unity is strong and authentic and that we have a place for people here when we bring them in.

Rethinking Liberian Ministry

The concept of planting a new church is near and dear to my heart. However, Vicar Fofana and I have come to the conclusion that it is not in the best interest of our Liberian fellowship to aim at a stand-alone church plant right now. The fact of the matter is, Liberian immigrants are not positioned well to independently operate their own church in America. Most work 2-3 jobs, few have cars, some have housing, and many are sending money back home to Liberia. We have also noticed that the 2nd generation (their children) is quickly becoming more and more American and less Liberian. Liberian customs and worship styles are less engaging to the children as they become more American. Our concern is that if the Liberian fellowship is fully independent, they will struggle to keep their children connected to the church and will watch them drift away.

Life Together

The new Liberian ministry concept has everything to do with Life Together. We are all Bethel, whether “American” or “Liberian.” The Liberian fellowship will still have their 11:30am Sunday worship service in the West African style. It’ll always be the 1st generation’s heart language. We’ll still get together at least 4 times a year to have a combined service and potluck so that everyone gets to dance and eat! But in every other aspect the members of that fellowship are as Bethel as everyone else. We will strive to include them as equals and utilize their gifts and talents to minister to an even broader range of people. This is getting exciting.

1st and 2nd Generation Ministry

As one church, we can minister to both the 1st and the 2nd generations effectively. Using the strengths of our entire church we can come around the 1st generation Liberian members to help them conduct a powerful ministry of service and outreach to other 1st generation Liberian immigrants. At the same time, we can use other strengths to engage all our children into the ministry of our church through Sunday School, Confirmation, EPIC - Future Church Now, Vacation Bible School, our Young Family Group and more.

This is the opportunity God has prepared for us. This is our chance to make an eternal difference in these families by unifying them in Jesus and in His church. This is Life Together.

Blessings, Pastor Seabaugh

PAGE 3 “… MAKING DISCIPLES FOR JESUS CHRIST

Like most people in Minnesota, we are looking forward to Spring. The snow is

mostly gone and we know April showers will bring May flowers. A hint of bright colors

from tulips, iris, daffodil and jonquil bulbs carefully planted last Fall are brightening the

flower beds. The first robins are eagerly looking for worms and the sky is a beautiful blue.

Tufts of green grass are beginning to show in our long dormant brown lawns and we

know it’s time to apply Scott “Turf Builder” to help develop a healthy green lawn during the

Summer months. We eagerly apply “Miracle-Gro” to our flower beds and shrubs to ensure healthy growth. It’s

amazing what a shot of fertilizer will do.

Who could possibly deny the existence of God after watching the seasonal change from Winter to Spring?

Who can doubt the majesty of God after viewing his abundant love for us? Apparently quite a few people. A recent

American Religious Identification Survey conducted in the United States by Trinity College, Hartford CT, revealed

in 1990, that 86% of people surveyed said they were Christians and that number tragically declined to 76% in 2008.

In 1990, 8% said they did not believe in any god and that number unfortunately increased to 15% in 2008. People

professing to be Lutherans declined from 5.2% in 1990 to 3.8% in 2008. The Muslim proportion of the population

continues to grow and has doubled during the same time period. We have our work cut out for us in spreading the

true word of God in our church, neighborhood and world!

Now is the time to fertilize the missions program at Bethel Lutheran

Church! Each month you are provided a Missions Offering envelope. Bethel no

longer has a line item in the budget for missions, so please give as generously as

you can. Half of all funds received are assigned to the Lutheran Church-Missouri

Synod (LCMS) for missions work overseas. The other half is assigned to the

LCMS Minnesota South District to fund mission opportunities such as starting up new churches, outreach programs

and ethnic ministries. For example, these programs are currently taking the Gospel of Jesus Christ to people of

Hispanic, Chinese, Hmong and the Liberian, Ethiopian, Swahili and Sudanese among other people from Africa. We

have an excellent example of this program right here at Bethel with Vicar Fofana and the African ministry. The

LCMS Minnesota South District is also providing an opportunity to learn about Jesus Christ on numerous Minnesota

college campuses. This is a marvelous opportunity to spiritually equip, nourish, and enrich our future leaders.

Bethel Lutheran Church has its own mission statement ”Making disciples for Jesus Christ

in our church, neighborhood and world.” Bethel has always had a strong passion for mission and

outreach. During the 1970s Bethel was a leader in establishing an outreach ministry to the

Hmong population in St. Paul. This passion continued to flame with our outreach to the Somali

population and burns even brighter today with our outreach to the Liberian population in the

Twin Cities.

Bethel enthusiastically supported missionaries in Papua New Guinea and elsewhere in

Asia. We sent missionary teams to the Appalachian area of the U. S., China and Mexico. Bethel is spiritually on fire

with our mission program and the flame burns brighter as we expand our ministries.

For decades, faithful Lutherans have provided financial resources to carry out mission work. We trust the

commitment level of the LCMS for Christ’s mission will only continue to grow, fueled by the compassion that Christ

Himself has for those not yet a part of His flock. We are committed to touching the hearts and minds of people

throughout the world and sharing with them the love of Christ. Within the LCMS, the flame burns bright with the

same passion and scope as the Reformation ignited nearly 500 years ago. Bethel has done much but there is still much

to do, and we urgently need your help.

We must take the Gospel to the unreached and uncommitted people in our own communities, as well as

around the world, support ethnic and multicultural ministry work throughout the United States, and train workers to

be witnesses of the Good News. When we give to support missionaries, mission projects, or mission work in general,

we are making it possible for more people to hear the Gospel. We ask for your continued prayers for our Lord’s

blessing and that many more people will be saved to the glory of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Every dollar you put in your Mission Offering envelope goes to grow Bethel’s commitment to missions. We

can do more...we must do more...we will do more.

It’s time to fertilize Bethel’s mission program. When we reach for our check books

we reach for the “Miracle-Gro.” Please put a generous contribution in your monthly Missions

Offering envelope so Bethel can continuing making disciples for Jesus Christ in our church,

neighborhood and world. In the service of our Lord,

Talked about combin-ing Future Church and Liberian 2nd generation and having "Ministry of Bethel" as the concept. Intentional blending of Liberians and youth. Discus-sion was had regarding the Li-

Compassion Sunday 2010 – “It Begins With a Child” at Bethel will be April 18. 2010. A brief video will be shown at the beginning of worship about Moses, a child found by his foster parent abandoned at a garbage dump and how God rescued him through Compassion International. Bethel members will share letters from their Compassion child and tell their story of supporting a child. You can support a child through Compassion for as little as $38 a month and can also exchange letters and make a new friend for life. Is it possible to lift a child out of the depths of poverty and help them to learn of their Savior who loves them? “And if anyone gives even a cup of water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth he will certainly not lose his reward.” Matthew 10:42 (NIV)
