Performance Band Congratulations to Ms Penny Coucill, our Band Director, who led the Performance Band at the Gala Concert of the Northern Beaches Instrumental Music Festival on Sunday night at Pittwater HS. The Performance Band was the only Primary or High School Band invited to perform, with the Chairperson referencing Manly West PS as a ‘lighthouse’ school in music. We would like to particularly congratulate Penny for this title as her dedication, commitment and outstanding aspirations with all the students of all four bands are evident at every rehearsal and performance. We would also like to thank all the tutors, staff and parents supporting the band program. At assembly on Thursday, the Band Captains will receive their badges and representatives from all bands will receive their Northern Beaches Festival trophies after performing over the weekend in the festival. There will be an opportunity to listen to the Performance Band next Thursday 17th June from 8.40am near the hall.

Last Friday 4th June, a number of Manly West students travelled to Gosford to compete in the Regional Sydney North Cross-Country Carnival. Mr Johns attended the carnival and reported back that every Manly West student ran with outstanding effort and represented the Manly Zone with pride. From the day, two runners achieved exceptional results in their aged race. Congratulations to Felix Stephens who finished 8th and Charlotte Walker who finished 2nd in their races respectively. Charlotte will progress to compete at the NSWPSSA State Cross Country carnival on Friday 16th July at Eastern Creek and Felix will be included as a reserve for this event. Thank you Mr Turner and Mr Johns.

These banners will be awarded at the Assemblies in Week 8 and 10. Positive Behaviour Engaging Learners (PBEL) We have developed a summary that explains the award system at Manly West Public School (see Page 5). We are endeavouring to assist the clarification of the process for gaining Expectation Certificates and Banners. The Year 6 Peer Leadership Program (PLP) Monitors are now called PBEL Monitors and they hand out ‘minis’ (tokens for weekly prize draws) in the playground to students who are displaying the focus expectation each fortnight. The PBEL Monitors also talk to students at assembly and contribute to a positive wellbeing culture at our school. 6M Art 6M have been working creatively on some amazing ‘Growth Sculptures’ with Mrs Menzies. Students were inspired by artist Margel Hinder. The task was to create a sculpture using wire that echoes their observations of the shape and space of the playground equipment. The students needed to reflect their childhood memories of this equipment through their sculpture and writing. The results are a mix of symbolic and literal interpretation of students’ memories, described through their writing. Well done 6M.

Library News
Look at these terrific readers who have completed the 2021 Premier’s Reading Challenge! Way to go Carly Neville (5B), Samuel Phillips (5W) and Brielle Macnab (3T)! The deadline is less than three months away! Manly West students have until Friday, August 20th, 2021 to finish the reading and complete their logs online at the PRC website, https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html! All those who have completed the PRC have received an ASPIRE card, chosen a bookmark and had their name on a special sticker displayed on the PRC Wall of Fame outside the library. All official certificates will be delivered in Term 4. It’s getting chillier now, so snuggle up and read a great book!
Thank you for ordering from Scholastic Book Club this term. Apologies that the system kept reverting to home delivery, but hopefully when your children receive their books they will be happy readers nonetheless! The fabulous Kate Mooney has recruited some wonderful volunteers to coordinate and deliver everything to classrooms by the end of this week. It is a huge job, so if you have any spare time to help please let me know.
It was WORLD OCEAN DAY yesterday, and there is a schools art competition you might like to enter. Entry is free and is open to students of all ages and the aim is to repurpose rubbish into winning art. The competition promotes concepts about closed loop recycling, litter and rubbish impacts on the ocean and creative and thoughtful ways to make better everyday decisions by turning trash to treasure. I have registered our school and will keep you updated with the conditions and due date here and on the Competition Corner notice board near Mr’s Organ’s office. Head to https://www.oceanloversfestival.com/litterarty for all the information, rules, conditions, prizes and a gallery of past winning artworks. All submissions are due by the end of Term 3. Inspire others to save our
oceans and marine life with your artistic talents!
Happy reading and creating! Mrs Ellen Swick, Teacher Librarian
Kitchen Garden News
In the Kitchen Garden this week…
Year 3 are learning how to make beeswax wraps today by melting wax onto fabric with an iron.
Beeswax groups are a great alternative to single use plastic like cling wrap. They can be used to wrap snacks or sandwiches and have antibacterial properties. Just wipe clean and use again.

TONY FALZARANO
I am very pleased to have been voted in as P&C President for the next year. I am also very pleased to
have seen a large turnout at our AGM and many new faces taking on roles on the Executive and
various P&C sub-committees. You can see a full list of people on the Executive and our various P&C
subcommittees on our website.
Join us—there are many vacant positions that need to be filled.
As you will see we do have some vacancies, the most important being the Treasurer, so please contact
me if you are interested in filling any of these vacancies. View the full list of vacancies here .
I’d like to thank all the general members and committee members who have supported the P&C over
recent years, particularly during the difficult times in 2020. Many thanks to Tracey Martin outgoing
President and Ben Goodland outgoing Vice President for their insights and commitment to the P&C.
My commitment to Manly West
I'd like to provide you with a bit of background info on me as no doubt many of you don't know much
about me. I have been a Manly West parent for 13 of the last 18 years and have had four kids go to
the school.
My first involvement with the P&C started as a volunteer in the canteen - I've volunteered once a
month for most of the 13 years that my kids have been at the school. I have been P&C Treasurer for
six of those years (including the last three), I have been Carnival Treasurer for five years. I am also an
Ethics teacher at the school (last four years).
I met my wife, Sarah, at a P&C social function about 15 years ago. She has been Chair of the BASC sub-
committee for the last five year and was previously the BASC Chair and Treasurer when our older kids
were at the school. She has also been Chair of P&C Finance sub-committee during part of that time.
While I'm sure many of you will not have the time or desire to be as involved as Sarah and I, I would
encourage you to volunteer in some capacity for one or more of the P&C activities. That can range
from helping out at one off events such as the Mother’s Day Stall, volunteering to help out in the
Canteen, Uniform Shop and/or the Kitchen Garden as little as once a term or joining one or more of
our sub-committees.

Tony Falzarano Incoming P&C President [email protected] m: 0402 541 234

STEAM ROOM UPDATE
Children in the STEAM room engaged in thoughtful and knowledgeable discussions this week around reconciliation, as they were inspired by Aboriginal peoples in a range of activities.
These conversations celebrated First Nations persons, knowledge and culture, as well as recognising the impacts of colonisation and moving forward with respect. Children recorded their ideas, and these will shape the development of a new Acknowledgement of Country for the STEAM room.
To inspire us we enjoyed books by Aboriginal authors and First Nations music daily. Children engaged with the Reconciliation Week artwork by Jessica Johnson, exploring colours, symbolism and patterns in their own scratch artworks, as well as the animal sculptures of Sheridan Bird, creating their own using wire and wool.
Those that like to be active enjoyed some Indigenous games early in the week, while the series Thalu was a hit for those that checked out our midweek cinema. (Thalu is currently available on ABC iView for those that would like to continue watching).
Perhaps the highlight of the week was our canoe and raft building challenge, using natural materials found within the school, and inspired by the different canoes and rafts built by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples around Australia. Educators really enjoyed seeing children's creativity, problem solving and teamwork, and seeing the pride as one of our children shared their Aboriginality, and knowledge passed on from their grandmother.
