REFORMATION 500!

This year, Lutherans around the world are celebrating the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation! 500 years ago, Martin Luther began his protest by nailing 95 theses on the door of the Wittenberg Castle Church. Certainly, it was a Spirit led movement that changed the church forever. When we celebrate this anniversary, we are celebrating the work of the Spirit that renews the church in every age. Together, as the people of Bethany, we will look back on our traditions’ history while we also trust our future to God’s Spirit.

We have a month of exciting opportunities! Reformation 500: Here I Stand—Over the next few weeks, we will hear from some of our fellow church

members about what being Lutheran means to them. What of our faith has inspired and shaped them? On what tenets do they proudly say, “Here I stand”?

“You Were There: The Reformation”—Join us Sunday, October 22 during worship for a look at Martin Luther’s life through an old-time radio show performance. The host of the show will interview Luther’s sister and friends and give us a closer look at a man who changed the world.

Reformation Party—Save the date of Sunday, October 29! Following worship, we’ll have a meal, some entertainment, and door prizes just for fun!

Spare Change World Hunger Challenge—At the Synod Assembly in 2016, Bishop Miller challenged the Metro Chicago churches to raise $1 million for ELCA World Hunger by the 500th Reformation Anniversary. Let’s help reach that goal! During worship, children will collect spare change to add to our collection. Hunt now for the quarters, nickels, and dimes sitting around your house, your car, the bottom of your purse, etc. In celebration of God’s many gifts, let’s pass on the blessing!

Lutheran World Relief Quilts

Every Tuesday, a group of women gather in our basement to piece together quilts. There are jobs for those who sew and those who don’t. The quilts they make are shipped to Lutheran World Relief who then distributes quilts through partner organizations around the world. In 2016, Bethany’s 94 quilts were part of the 346,170 quilts shipped to 16 different countries. This year, on Sunday, October 1, we blessed 78 quilts to once again join the hearts and hands of many others in providing warmth and comfort to those in need. Thank you to Marlene Ahlberg,

MariLynn Bergmark, Sharon Bolerjack, Dolores Gutowski, Marie Heeren, Norma Johnson, Carol Losey, Carol Reeves and Nancy Mason. You can support this ministry by donating material, old blankets, sheets, and table cloths. Our quilters would welcome other helping hands as well, both those who sew and those who don’t. Join them on Tuesdays from 10am-1pm.

Thrivent Action Teams “Radical generosity is the key to changing the world”—so says Thrivent

Financial. To put that into practice, Thrivent members are able to apply for two $250 grants each year to help fund a service project, educational

event, or fundraiser. Thrivent also sends free t-shirts, banner, thank you notes, stickers, and name tags with each Action Team kit. For our “Keeping Faith: Sisters of Story” performance, Pr. Elaina applied and the $250 helped cover the costs of tickets, flyers, and treats for our dessert reception. This is available to all Thrivent members.

How might you be inspired to “Live Generously”?

Rally Day kicked off our Sunday School year on September 10th Students made puppets from socks. Thank you to Beth Howell, Erin Kissick and Heather Nilles for serving as our Sunday School teachers.

Pastor Elaina also led acolyte training for our fifth graders in September. Sam Ahlberg and Tyler Hueneke practiced their required duties and as the picture shows, it went very well!

Celebrating Reformation 500

An Evening with Katie Luther

Katherine von Bora was a runaway nun who found her way to Wittenberg, Germany. In 1525, she married Martin Luther.

If ever there was a power behind the throne, none was stronger than “Dear Kate,” as Luther described his beloved wife. Luther wrote that he loved waking up to see pigtails on the pillow next to him. Katie

Luther bore 6 children, ran the household, organized family finances, tended a garden, raised live-stock, brewed her own beer, operated a medieval guest house, and so much more.
