President’s Message

Our annual car show was another success thanks to all the

volunteers and, of course, participants. We fell short of

last year’s total by 8 cars but still managed to have 77

cars registered. Our 50/50 raffle was another Club record

with a split of $1,368.00. One disappointing fact was that

over half of the cars registered were owned by non Club

members. With a paid membership in excess of 60, we

should have had more Club members supporting our only

fund raising event of the year.

The BOP show held the following weekend to our show

was also a success if measured by participation. I would

estimate over 160 cars. There were about 25

Oldsmobile’s there with Club members taking awards in

most of the classes.

Our Club Web Site is back in working order, and we are

making needed changes, updates and hopefully will be

able to keep it current.

It seems like summer is upon us with the warmer than

normal temperatures. As usual there will not be meetings

on Club night at the Pavilions during June, July and

August, but you can still park there on the 4th

Saturday if

you care to. Watch the Web Site and your e-mail for

announcements on events.

The Welcome Dinner was a huge success! Our out-of-state guests enjoyed seeing the Martin Auto

Museum and having a separate room to set up and eat dinner made socializing easy. The dessert table was a big hit and Joni Visser’s chocolate covered cherries were the hit of the night – Joni now has to bring

her cherries to every Club function. There was so much dessert left over, we had the goodies at the car show the next day. Thanks to all our volunteers and club members for bringing all the side dishes and

desserts; without your help we would not have gotten so many compliments of the dinner.

Moving to Arizona By Chris and Bob Ryback After working 40 years (for the same company) installing elevators in the New York City area and looking retirement in the eye, we knew we were not staying in New Jersey. We lived in the highest taxed county in the highest taxed state in the union. At the time, I had a 5,000 sq. foot garage loaded with parts and 13 Oldsmobiles. Now the company and I had different ideas as to when I should retire but anyhow, it happened. Since I had to start cleaning out the attic, basement and garage and lowering the car count, my wife Chris started investigating various areas to relocate to. After garage sales, e-bay sales and selling a whole load of Olds parts to a collector in Michigan, I crated

up the rest and we were ready to go. I got rid of 5 Olds' including a nice '54 98 with factory air and a REAL nice '72 Toronado. It is a very long story of how we picked Prescott Valley, Az., but the day finally came in 2012, Super Bowl Sunday with my NY Giants in the game. First we had to arrange to move 8 Oldsmobiles. I hired a transport company to move 6

cars on an open trailer (big mistake). As luck would have it, the moving van and transporter showed up on the same day. So my darling wife had to handle the contents of the house while I loaded up the transporter. On board went a '34 three window coupe, a '49 88 club sedan, a '57 Fiesta wagon, a '58 x-wagon (a 4 door wagon converted to a pickup), a '64 Jetstar 1 and a '64 442 clone. After loading up the rig and watching it go down the road I realized that the driver did not give me any paperwork- I only had his cell

number. The following morning, we got in the '96 Cutlass Supreme and '97 Aurora (both also loaded to the max) and headed WEST. We actually passed the transporter sitting in a truck stop somewhere in Texas. The driver later told me that every time he stopped it drew a big crowd and lots of attention. It took us 4 days to make the cross country trip. Don't worry-

the transporter did show up and the Giants won! We won ourselves by moving to the beautiful state of Arizona.

How Old Are Your Tires by Art Soucek Most of us already know about this, but a reminder can’t hurt.

I recently read an article on tires and the danger of riding on tires beyond a certain age. There are varying opinions on when to replace tires, but all seem to agree tread depth is not the criteria to use. The article indicated that tires begin a deterioration process immediately after production which continues even if not in service, just sitting in a dealer’s inventory. The pace of deterioration is somewhat dependent on use, storage and atmospheric conditions with heat and exposure to sunlight big accelerants of that process.

It was suggested that annual inspections after five years be done, and absolutely ten years would be the longest time to keep any tire including the spare. There are codes on the tires which will give you the week and year of production. Look for the letters DOT followed by four digits (example-U2LL) than four more letters and three or

four numbers. If the tire was made before 2000 there will be three numbers, the first two are the week of the year, the third is the year (449 is the 44th week of 1999). If the tire was made in or after 2000, the number will be four digits (4409 is the 44th week of 2009). In most cases this is not an issue on our daily driver vehicles since we would be replacing tires long before age dictates so. But, for our Classic cars ten years will come up way before the tires are worn out. If you want more information on this google “Age of Tires”.

A LITTLE KNOWN QUADRAJET TUNING SECRET

By Harold Visser

With today’s gasoline formulations, adjusting a Quadrajet to manufacturer’s specifications

doesn’t always provide the desired results. Throw in some engine modifications and it soon

becomes obvious that the carburetor will need adjusting. One of the problems that can

occur is a hesitation or stumble right off idle or maybe a sluggish engine under light

acceleration, often accompanied by pinging or pre-detonation. This is usually a lean

running condition, a common problem, and can many times be cured by richening the

air/fuel ratio a bit in the off idle/ low RPM mode. This of course, requires partial

disassembly of the carb and often takes two or three tries before the correct size primary

metering rods or primary jets are installed. Changing jets and or rods also affects wide

open throttle and also the high speed cruising mode of the Quadrajet, all of which can be

undesirable side effects.

Another little known method, that once installed, does not require disassembly of the

carburetor when adjusting, is the external adjustment screw that limits the distance that

the power piston can travel down in its bore. The power piston is what moves the tapered

metering rods up and down into the jets, thus in effect making the jet hole smaller or

larger as needed. This power piston is controlled by vacuum which pulls it down and a

spring which tries to counter the vacuum and lift it up. Under heavy or full throttle

applications the engine vacuum is very low and the power valve and its accompanied

metering rods are lifted up by the spring. Under light or part throttle operation, the vacuum

pulls the power valve, and the metering rods that are connected to it, down so the engine

goes into lean air/fuel mixture mode. By preventing the metering rods from going down

into the jets to far, it will prevent the engine from running to lean off idle and light part

time throttle.

Now you carb tuners are probably thinking, where the heck is this adjustment screw? It’s

not easy to find, it’s hidden in the base plate right under the fuel inlet and covered by a

little ¼” in diameter pressed in cover. It’s right between the idle mixture screws. After

removing the carburetor, I drilled a small 1/8” hole into the cover and then pried it out,

which revealed the screw about a ½” down in the hole. Sometimes soaking with Liquid

Wrench or its equivalent is required to break it lose, be careful, its hardened steel and the

screw slot can snap off. I modified an old screwdriver to get it out. Count the number of

turns it takes to get it out so you have a baseline when installing the new screw. Once it is

Page 26: BEST OF SHOW – ALL OLDS CAR SHOW – MARCH 22, 2014

out, a longer screw with the same thread count can be bought at Ace Hardware and the

end modified on a grinder or lathe to match the short original screw. A 1 ¼” or 1 ½” long

screw will work and it will also require a spring, from an old idle speed screw or equivalent,

to hold it in position after adjustment.

Screw the new adjustment screw the same number of turns in it took to get the old one

out, and then by turning the screw in a half a turn at a time, the engine will run a just a bit

richer off idle and just might cure the sluggish or lean run problem.

Now, on another note, to get a Qjet set up 100% correctly requires a wide band Oxygen

sensor in the exhaust stream and an air/fuel ratio gauge, which I have, but I’m still in the

learning stage with that project………
