The very vision of Sankara was born from the need to provide quality eye care to everyone, regardless of socio-economic, religious, linguistic and geographical backgrounds. Once Sankara Eye Hospital was established in Coimbatore, one of the first initiatives that the team undertook was to conduct exclusive outreach camps to raise awareness, screen and detect eye defects and ailments and treat these, where possible. Over the years, the outreach camps added a host of services; today, SECI has a Comprehensive Community Eye Health Programme that provides holistic eye care and has tailor-made services to address the needs of both, different age groups and various eye defects.

The ophthalmic field has evolved and rapid changes in diagnosis of eye ailments and their management. Various continuing medical education initiatives are being organized to update the knowledge and skills of the spectrum of cadres involved in eye care delivery. The first BSc Optometry programme in the state of Karnataka has commenced at our institution at Bangalore. The Sankara College of Optometry is currently allowed to enroll 20 students per batch.

Realising the need for well trained and qualified mid-level ophthalmic personnel (MLOP), the hospital has run a diploma – vision care technician since 2004. Over 400 technicians are today available to the eye care industry from this programme.

A health care system is only as good as the personnel in it. There is a uniform shortage of eye care personnel in the South East Asia Region. HR needs in ophthalmology range from an ophthalmologist, optometrist to mid level ophthalmic personnel and Field workers. In addition the programme requires administrators and ancillary staff such as orthoptists and opticians.
