Dr. Stephen Krashen is professor emeritus at the University of Southern California. He is best known for developing the first comprehensive theory of second language acquisition introducing the concept of sheltered subject matter teaching, and as the co-inventor of the Natural Approach.
Having published more than 400 papers and books on bilingual education and reading, including “The Power of Reading”, Dr. Krashen has been highly influential throughout his life both as an activist and an educational researcher. He is an advocate of the use of free voluntary reading during second language acquisition, which, in his words “ïs the most powerful tool we have in language education, first and second”.
Dr. Krashen has won a number of awards for his work and in 2005, he was inducted into the International Reading Association’s Reading Hall of Fame. Outside of his reading world, he was the 1977 Incline Bench Press champion of Venice Beach and holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.

Abstract:
Participants will be introduced to the two opposing hypotheses for ESL instruction: Comprehension vs Skill Building and will learn the most effective (and pleasant) approaches to teaching English as a second language to children. Practical tips, latest research and best practice case studies in US, China and Taiwan will be shared.
