BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL JUNE 2019 As another school year ends, I would like to thank the graduating seniors for all of their efforts the last four years at Berlin High School. I hope that you will have positive memories of your high school careers. We have tried to provide you with an education to prepare you for the next chapters in your life. We have also tried to provide you with the skills to be a better person today than you were yesterday. Good luck to all of you, in whatever you choose to do. Do it well. Underclassmen, my wish for you is to have a relaxing, productive, fun summer. If you have a job or are getting a job, do it to the best of your ability. Be respectful, be on time, work hard, be kind, and have fun. The need to recharge is real and important before returning to Berlin High School in the fall or moving on to post-graduation life. My wish is for all parents/guardians to have time with your children to talk, be silly, have fun. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I look forward to see- ing you and continuing our partnership! There are many opportunities for your son or daughter to stay involved over the summer. Make sure your students are e-mailing their coaches if they are unsure when activities are happening. Before a high school student is allowed to participate in school sports, the student must have a WIAA Physical (or alternate year) card, ImPACT Concussion Test (needed every other year), an Athletic Pledge/Insurance Waiver-Athletic Code Handbook Agreement, Parent & Athlete Concussion Agreement, and HIPPA permission signed and on file in the Berlin High School office. The last three forms should be completed through eRegistration when registering for school. Students must turn in this information before the first day of practice/tryouts. All forms are available on-line and at the Berlin High School office. Please call the BHS office at 361-2000 if you have any questions

about this procedure.

There will be a meeting for ALL Fall Athletes on Thursday, August 1st, at 6 p.m. The school will be offering concussion testing following the meeting from 7-8 p.m. We will also be offering con-cussion testing on Monday, August 19th, at 8:00 a.m. and again at 2:00 p.m. at the high school. Please arrive promptly at start times.

Congratulations to all State Track & Field participants!

Stay active and involved over the summer!

Berlin FFA Honors Dr. Eidahl

Dr. Eidahl is the recipient of the 2018 - 2019 Berlin FFA Honorary Membership Degree. The honorary degree can be given to farmers, school superintendents, principals, members of boards of education, chapter advisors, teachers, staff members in agricultural education, business people, and any others who are helping to advance Ag Ed and the FFA, and who have rendered outstanding service to the FFA throughout the year. These members may be elected to honorary membership by a majority vote of the members present at any regular FFA meeting. As Dr. Eidahl prepares to retire from his career in education with the Berlin Area School District we wanted to thank him for all of his continued support of both Berlin FFA and the agricultural educa-

tion program. With this award, Dr. Eidahl is officially a lifetime honorary member of the Berlin FFA.

ACT Prep Opportunity for Students

This summer we are pleased to provide an opportunity for students to help review and pre-pare for taking the state required ACT test their junior year. The Jumpstart to the ACT bootcamp is a three day session where students will learn test taking strategies, increase their content knowledge, understand the parts of the ACT and practice taking parts of the test. Through student and staff feedback, we have focused this bootcamp on knowledge and skills the students need to know in or-der to succeed on the ACT. This opportunity is one step in the student's preparation for this exam. During this bootcamp, we will focus on math, English and Science. This free opportunity is open to students who will be sophomores and juniors next year. There are three sessions that students can choose from: July 9-11 from 12:30 - 3:30 p.m.; August 13-15 from 8:30-11:30 a.m.; and August 13-15 from 12:30 - 3:30 p.m. Students recently had the opportunity to express their interest in this opportunity and 'register' for a spot for this summer. Parents received a letter home about this opportunity. The week of June 24, parents will receive an email from the school with a 'registration form' attached. At that time, parents can register their child for which session they would like to attend and/or verify their students registration. We hope that students take advantage of this opportunity to prepare for this test that can have such an impact on a student's future plans. If you have questions, please call the High School (920) 361-2000 and talk with Lynn Mork, principal or Jodi Becker, Director of Instruction.

Wordsmiths of Berlin: A Year in Review

As the 2018-19 school year draws to a close, the Wordsmiths of Berlin (the BHS writ-ing club), affectionately referred to as WoB is celebrating a successful 4th year of existence. At the helm this year were the club’s co-chairpersons, junior Gracie Brownlow, and senior Melissa Gerber. Attendance to our weekly meetings was strong, averaging over ten members at each of our 34 club meet-ings. Among other club business, the meet-ings provide a safe venue to share creative writing pieces that members have been work-ing on. On average, each meeting featured between two and three students taking the “author’s chair” and reading, reciting, or performing their original creative pieces. One of the objectives of the club is to offer opportunities for students to showcase and be rec-ognized for their various forms of creative writing publicly. For this purpose, the club sponsored a number of contests throughout the school year. In December, WoB hosted its 4th annual Poetry Slam poetry performance competition. This year’s 15 contestants included 11 BHS student poets, two local adult poets, and two student poets from Ripon. BHS senior John Gonzales won the contest with BHS

graduate and WoB founder Mason Prindle taking 2nd prize.

In April, WoB sponsored a 2nd annual songwriting contest in conjunction with the music de-partment, open to any BHS student. The top three prizes went to junior Carter Dake, freshman Heather McCormick, and senior John Gonzales. In early May, WoB sponsored its 4th annual short story contest; eight stories were submitted. Winning stories were by Samantha Nigbor, Jazmin Rodencal, and Regina Schimke taking 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively. Finally, WoB, along with the BHS Drama Club, sponsored a screenwriting/short movie contest. Two entries were submitted for the contest. The winning entry was submitted by Nick Chier, Hayden Mateo, and Johann Becker; the runner up came from Allie Rosin-Borland, Regina Schimke, Heather McCormick, and Mateja Clark. Each of the contests originated from suggestions of the WoB members; we intend to reprise all four contests again next year. Some other club activities this year included picking up garbage around

the school grounds, working concessions at various sporting events, and decorating a downtown window for Berlin’s window wars prior to Christmas. As they said goodbye to graduating WoB co-chair Melissa Gerber and the other senior WoB members, the club members elect-ed Heather McCormick as the new co-chairperson to join Gracie Brownlow for the 2019-2020 school year.
