MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND FESTIVITIES

MEMBER PHOTOS

Dear Members,Summer is right around the corner, and I invite you to visit Berkeley Hall and experience all it has to offer. Play golf, walk the nature trails, take a dip in the pool, go fishing at the River Park, or enjoy a fireworks display from a kayak. Start or end your day with an invigorating workout or a relaxing massage at the Fitness Center.

Memorial Day Weekend festivities abound from May 24-27. We kickoff the weekend with our Town Hall Meeting scheduled for May 24 at 4pm. The meeting will provide you with mid-year updates for the Club, including financial, membership, real estate, golf course improvements, and other Club activities. After the meeting, please join us for Happy Hour, followed by a Southern Buffet in the Mixed Grille. You also won’t want to miss the Pool Dance Party and Cookout beginning at 7pm on May 25. Please check the newsletter for additional activities and reservation requirements for the remainder of the weekend.

Looking ahead, there are some fantastic events planned for your enjoyment at Berkeley Hall. Mother’s Day on May 12 from 12-2pm features a delightful brunch with music by Sean Driscoll, Classical Guitarist. We’re excited to offer a new wellness program with our Balance for Life event on May 16 from 5-7pm, as Diane Wilson joins the Spa and Fitness team. Activities for Kid’s Camp will be scattered throughout June, July and August. Our Annual Independence Day celebration runs from July 1-5, with our spectacular fireworks display on the 4th. The 14th Annual Player’s Amateur will be held at Berkeley Hall from July 8-14, and there are still plenty of opportunities for you to volunteer and be a part of this special event.

May and June are excellent months to be out on the water. River Park is now offering New Power Boat Excursions from a 4-passenger power boat! There are also opportunities for inshore fishing, crabbing, guided kayaking tours and sunset cruises. Please make your reservations through Concierge Services. I am proud to announce two spotlight items, which only serve to enhance the Berkeley Hall reputation of excellence. Please join me in congratulating Assistant Golf Professional, Matt Booker, on his Class “A” Member achievement with the PGA. Compliments also go out to Maren Rogers, Director of Event Planning, who was instrumental in having Berkeley Hall featured on WHHI-TV as being the perfect venue for wedding nuptials. And, finally, a warm welcome to John Soulia as he joins the Berkeley Hall team as our new Executive Chef.

What a special time of year at Berkeley Hall! May and June are great months to spend in the Lowcountry. Please enjoy this issue of The Berkeley Hall Experience, highlighting entertainment, activities, photographs and more.

Kindest Regards,

COOKBOOKLet’s get cooking! Yes, Members of Berkeley Hall, we are going to publish a community cookbook, and we need your help. The goal for a successful community cookbook is to have 100% participation from both men and women. We are calling on all members, and staff to join in this exciting endeavor. All proceeds will benefit the charities supported by the Berkeley Hall Fund.

You will be given credit for your recipe next to the recipe title. Add a sentence or two at the end of your recipe that offers preparation hints, or tell a brief story of why this recipe is special to you or your family. In the case of duplications, all contributors will be credited. Include the number of servings in your dish and note if it falls into a specific category such as vegetarian, heart healthy, local dish, time saver, etc. Please also consider the bounty from the Bluffton Farmer’s Market and creating ‘farm to table” recipes. It is important that you double check your recipes for accuracy and submit only those recipes that you have personally prepared.

The “Let’s Get Cooking” team, Linda Haeuser and Donna McCarty, will collect all recipes. They may be scanned and emailed, typed in an email, or placed in an envelope and left in one of their mailboxes. Thank you so much for your participation!

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fryby Rachel Joyce

Monday, May 6 at 3pm, Ladies Locker RoomSpontaneity has never been Harold Fry’s strong suit, especially once he retired. Just ask his long-suffering wife, Maureen. So imagine her surprise when Harold abruptly decides to walk 500 miles to the north of England in a naive attempt to save a dying woman, a colleague he once knew

briefly but to whom he hadn’t spoken in 20 years. It’s the proverbial case of a man going out to mail a letter and never coming home. Clad only in his everyday garb, lacking a cell phone, backpack, or reliable sense of direction, Fry puts one poorly shod foot in front of the other and trudges through villages and hamlets, often relying on the kindness of strangers to keep his momentum going. To the object of his inspiration, the fading Queenie Hennessy, he writes pithy postcards, bravely exhorting her not to die. Solitary walks are perfect for imagining how one might set the world to rights, and Harold does just that, although not always with uplifting results, as he ruminates on missed opportunities and failed relationships.” ~ Carol Haggas, Booklist

The Art of Hearing Heartbeats by Jan-Philipp Sendker

Monday, June 3 at 3pm, Ladies Locker Room “A poignant and inspirational love story set in Burma, The Art of Hearing Heartbeats spans the decades between the 1950s and the present. When a successful New York lawyer suddenly disappears without a trace, neither his wife nor his daughter Julia has any idea where he might be…

until they find a love letter he wrote many years ago, to a Burmese woman they have never heard of. Intent on solving the mystery and coming to terms with her father’s past, Julia decides to travel to the village where the woman lived. There she uncovers a tale of unimaginable hardship, resilience, and passion that will reaffirm the reader’s belief in the power of love to move mountains.’ ~ Amazon.com

The Players Amateur By Steve Wilmot, RBC Heritage Tournament Director

The Heritage Classic Foundation wants you to be a part of the 14th Annual Players Amateur at Berkeley Hall. There are many ways that you can support this great event.

VOLUNTEERS: We are looking for people to volunteer on several different committees. You are requested to volunteer for a minimum of three shifts over the 7 day period. Every attempt will be made to honor your requests based on the date of receipt and position availability. A $40 registration fee for volunteers will be required. A special Player’s Amateur logo golf shirt and hat will be provided for you. As a way of saying thank you for donating your time, all volunteers are invited to the Volunteer Appreciation Party on Friday evening, July 12th. If you are interested please contact Diana George at [email protected] or 843.815.5441.

HOUSING VOLUNTEERS: Please consider opening your home to one of the world’s top amateurs. We plan to ask little of our hosts, except to make new friends with these talented young men. The Players Amateur will provide them with all meals. Players will be arriving Monday, July 8. Practice Rounds are Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. The Contestant- Amateur tournament will be played on Wednesday and the competition will run from Thursday to Sunday. Most players will depart Sunday evening or early Monday morning. Please contact Lori Delaney at [email protected] or 843.706.3556 or Chris Bullock at [email protected] or 843.415.2899 if you would like to open your home to a player.

SPONSORS: There are several levels of sponsorship that give you the opportunity to play in the Contestant-Amateur held on Wednesday, July 10th. This full day of fun is a unique opportunity to play golf with a fantastic amateur golfer that may end up competing on the PGA Tour in the future. Many former contestants have been successful at making the transition to the pro circuit: Ben Curtis, Camilo Villegas, Bill Haas, Lucas Glover, Ricky Fowler, Marc Leishman, J.B. Holmes, Matt Kuchar and your own Kyle Stanley to name a few.

Contact Andy McMillen ([email protected] or phone 843.671.2448 at the Heritage Classic Foundation for more information on sponsorship. Thank you for considering being a part of this special event.

Daniel Nisbet2012 Players Am Champion

How Have They Done Recently?Berkeley Hall is home to the Players Amateur. As host, we work closely with the Heritage Classic Foundation to invite the world’s top ranked amateurs to compete for an exemption to the RBC Heritage. Former participants are now distinguishing themselves on the PGA Tour having earned over $46 million in prize money. So how have they done recently?

One of the Hottest Rookies on the PGA TourBEN KOHLES placed 35th at the Players Amateur in 2012 with a 5+ over par score of 221. He began his professional career the following week with consecutive wins on the Web.com Tour where he ranked 1st in driving accuracy and 24th in greens hit last year. Not only did he win the first time he teed it up on Tour, but he won it in a playoff; then backed it up with another win in his next start to graduate to the PGA Tour. He’s sure to be a factor on the PGA TOUR and quite possibly being Rookie of the Year. His best finish thus far on the PGA TOUR was 7th at the Tampa Bay Championship and presently, he ranks 71st on the overall Money List.

From Last To First ~ A Lesson in Staying AroundMICHEAL THOMPSON played in the Players Amateur in 2007 and finished 2nd at 22-under par.

Last month, he won PGA Honda Classic by 2 strokes over Geoff Ogilvy in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. His 9-under par total was a stunning improvement over his 16-over par performance just two weeks prior at the Northern Trust Open in Los Angeles, which was the highest score posted for those who completed the first 2 rounds. It was his third missed cut in 4 starts. After the first two months of the 2013 PGA Tour season, he had made only $10,919, which was certainly not enough to even cover his expenses. Having missing the cut, he returned home and sharing his worst fears with his wife Rachael and longtime swing

coach Susan Meyers, that he wouldn’t make another cut and lose his PGA Tour card. At their urging, he decided to focus on enjoying the game again and regain that feeling of playing and practicing for himself and the passion he once had for the game. After 6-years on the PGA Tour he was finally in the winner’s circle, which offers a lesson in staying around.

Dawie Van Der Walt Wins in South AfricaDAWIE VAN DER WALT played in the Players Amateur in 2006 and finished tied for 8th at 13-under

par. In March, became the 5th South African winner in 10 European Tour events this season with his two-shot victory at the 2013 Tshwane Open held at the Copperleaf Golf Club in South Africa. Van Der Walt posted a final round 5-under 67 to finish at 21-under overall for his first win on the European Tour. The Texas-based golfer was tied for the lead with 4 other after the third round of play. Following the victory Van Der Walt said, “At 30 years of age you start doubting yourself and wonder if you’re good enough - and this shows me that I am, I would have liked to win before 30, but I’ll definitely take this. Golf is a game where you don’t get a lot of chances to win, and to do it is fantastic.”

Year Events Cut Made Top 10 Money

2013 10 7 3 $352,711

2012 1 1 10 $10,296

Dear Fellow Members,

Thank you once again for your support in making the 2012 Players Amateur a big success in its first year at Berkeley Hall. The 2013 event will be here before you know it and much is being done to get ready. We hope all of you in some way, are able to be involved in this year’s tournament.

It has always been our goal to host the best amateur golf tournament in the country while at the same time, provide funds for local charities. Funding an event such as this is always a challenge. For this reason we’re asking for your help. We have greatly appreciated the generous donations we have received from benefactors in the past, and this year, we hope that a larger percentage of our Members will participate financially. Our ultimate goal would be to raisethebarfrom10%to100%ofthemembership making some form of financial contribution. There are several sponsorship packages being offered with different benefits included with each package, but please keep in mind, any donation is appreciated whether it is $20 or $20,000. This year, we have also introduced a “2-Club” which is another way you can contribute as a sponsor. Members who join the “2-Club” receive a shirt and hat {$60 value} for their contribution of $2 for every 2 recorded during the tournament. Please speak to a member of our professional staff for further details. Please note that the net proceeds from The Players Amateur tournament are donated to local charities, so please help us to achieve our goals.

Sincerely,

Maginnes on Tap - Sirius XM 93 PGA Tour Network Where golf talk has a life of its own...

John Maginnes, talk show host of Sirius XM 93 PGA Tour Network - Maginnes on Tap performed a remote broadcast live from Berkeley Hall’s Men’s Locker Room. Duke Delcher, Real Estate Agent and Co-Founder of the Players Amateur, Bob Ring, Director of Marketing and Matt Presnell, Director of Golf were interviewed on the show and provided listeners with conversation ranging from real estate and membership opportunities to the hosting of the Players Amateur. Maginnes on Tap is a guest and caller driven show centered on the topics of the day and the game we all love. The program airs from 5 to 7pm ET Monday through Wednesday, and immediately following live coverage of PGA Tour events Thursday and Friday on Sirius 208 and XM 93. Visit www.BerkeleyHallClub.com/Maginnes.php to listen to their interviews.

RBC Heritage Week We kicked-off RBC Heritage Week with a Swing Exhibition at the Learning Center with PGA Tour Professional Bryce Molder and the 2012 Players Amateur Champion Daniel Nisbet. Both players were returning to Hilton Head Island to play in the RBC Heritage; Bryce Molder who has enjoyed successful on the PGA Tour since 2001 had played in the first Players Amateur tournament back in 2000, and Daniel Nisbet who received an exemption for winning last year’s event. Throughout the evening while they demonstrated their shot making skills, they answered questions from the audience and referred to the Players Amateur as a tournament like no other for world-class amateurs aspiring to play on the PGA Tour.

What is the Handicap Committee and what do they do?In late 2011, the Golf Committee and Board of Directors approved formation of a Handicap Committee at Berkeley Hall to bring us into compliance with the USGA Handicap System. Although it appears that our computer system takes care of handicaps, the Handicap Committee is actually responsible for this and much more, including handicap computation, score posting, making member handicaps and scoring records available for peer review, reviewing results of competitions, and certifying that our club is in compliance with the USGA.

Why do I post scores?Handicaps are intended to “level the playing field” for all players, and the goal is to insure that everyone has a fair and equitable chance when competing in tournaments and everyday games. At Berkeley Hall, this is considered an essential element for greater participation in our golf events. The USGA Handicap System states: “Fair handicapping depends on the full, accurate information regarding a player’s potential scoring ability as reflected by a complete scoring record. Every golfer is responsible for returning all acceptable scores . . .”

When and how do I post scores?Berkeley Hall players, regardless of ability, are required to post all scores, even the scores that seem too high to matter, in the pro shop immediately after each round using the following USGA guidelines: • When13ormoreholesareplayed,postan18holescore. More later on holes not completed.• When7-12holesareplayed,posta9holescore.• Post scores from any golf course with a USGA course/slope rating.• Post scores in both match and medal/stroke play.• Do not post when less than 7 holes are played.• Do not post scores from any golf course during its inactive season.• Do not post scores when the round is not played by the rules of golf, such as occasional practice rounds where multiple balls are played, rounds played in alternate formats like Scramble or Captains Choice, and rounds played where the number of clubs to be used is limited below 14.• Do not post scores when the golf course is less than 3000 yards for 18 holes or there is no USGA course/slope rating• Do not post scores when non-conforming equipment is used.

The USGA Handicap System requires a score be recorded for each hole as long as seven or more holes have been played. For holes not completed or not played:

• Holes not completed when conceded in a match or quit because they were lost are recorded as the “Most Likely Score”, equal to the number of strokes already taken plus the number of strokes that, in the players’ best judgment, would usually be required to complete the hole. • Holes not played when a hole is closed for maintenance or weather forces a round to end early are recorded with a score equal to par plus any handicap strokes for that hole.

The final consideration in score posting is Equitable Stroke Control (ESC). ESC is the downward adjustment of individual hole scores in order to

make handicaps more representative of a player’s potential ability. Prior to posting, ESC adjustments are made to holes where the actual score or “Most Likely Score” exceeds the player’s maximum score for their handicap based on the table below.

9-Hole Course Handicap 18-Hole Course Handicap Max. Score on Any Hole

4 or less 9 or less Double bogey

5 through 9 10 through 19 7

10 through 14 20 through 29 8

15 through 19 30 through 39 9

20 or more 40 or more 10

What happens with tournament scores? There is often confusion about what tournament formats require score posting and who is responsible for posting tournament scores. At the request of the Handicap Committee, all future tournament rules and descriptions will designate when a tournament produces acceptable scores, and pro shop staff will post all properly adjusted tournament scores at the conclusion of each round.

How are handicaps computed and what keeps the system honest? All properly adjusted and posted scores are used in the computation of member handicaps. The math is defined by the USGA Handicap System, but actual computation is done by the GHIN computer system. Revised handicap indexes and course handicaps are issued on the first and fifteenth of each month.

Many factors contribute to enjoyable and fair golf, but Peer Review, the ability for members to see handicap and scoring records for other mem-bers, ties everything together and makes it all transparent. Responsibility for peer review is shared. The Handicap Committee provides access to handicap and scoring records for all members through the GHIN com-puter system. Handicap data is also available online at www.ghin.com and in printed form in the pro shop. Individual members do their share by posting all acceptable and adjusted scores, except tournament scores, in the pro shop immediately after every round. Pro shop staff is always avail-able to help. For more information about handicaps, go to www.usga.org and click on Handicapping.

What will the Handicap Committee be doing in 2013?The committee will focus on reviewing score posting trends and individual handicaps, an important function outlined in the USGA Handicap System. Accurate and timely score posting is the foundation of handicapping. Each week, the Handicap Committee will compare scores posted with daily tee sheets to insure all scores are posted, are valid and represent games actually played. Discrepancies will be reviewed, communicated to the player and corrected or adjusted at the discretion of the committee.• Thecommitteewillalsocompareindividualtournamentperformance to non-tournament performance to ensure they are similar. • Ongoing, thecommitteewillcontinuetofosterunderstandingofthe handicap process and communicate results of its activities.

I have done a tremendous amount of research on pitch type shots over the last two years and my findings have been interesting to say the least. There are three things that really good pitchers do differently:

1) They hit the ball lower than average.2) They spin the ball more than average.3) They take less of a divot than average.

I actually found that most golfers hit better, more controllable pitch shots with either their gap or pitching wedge. This helps to keep the trajectory down which makes it so much easier to control distance. Set up as pictured and have a feel for hitting the ball low. This can be achieved by de-lofting the clubface coming into the impact zone and also by feeling a slight in-to-out draw based release. Believe it or not this helps to increase the spin rate and causes the ball to take one hop and stop. I love those pitches that have a low launching little draw to them that come to a screeching halt.....

If you are having trouble with fat or thin strikes, try to feel the handle elevating through impact - in other words, the grip is going up while the clubhead is travelling down into the ball. An unusual thought, but think about an airplane landing - the nose (handle) is up while the tail (clubhead) is down. Ideally we are looking for a shallow angle of descent with merely a brush of the turf.

Have you ever admired the landscape of a well-maintained golf course and wondered how much water and chemicals were used to make it look so beautiful? A common misconception is that pesticides and fertilizer used on a golf course cannot possibly be good for the environment. However, if you take a closer look, you’ll see that a well-managed golf course contributes greatly to the ecological benefits of the community. They provide communities with green spaces that become an important habitat for wildlife. They are environmental sanctuaries to numerous plant and animal species, and actually have a cleansing effect on the air and water that filters through the community.

Environmentalists are sometimes critical of golf courses, claiming that their use of pesticides have a negative impact on quality of water and soil, and the amount of water wasted that is with irrigation. However, university and government studies will refute their claims. Their studies indicate that properly applied pesticides and fertilizers do not leach into groundwater in amounts to cause risk, and modern turfgrass management practices greatly reduce the potential runoff.

Healthy turfgrass is an excellent filter that traps pollutants and prevents them from reaching groundwater supplies. They actually serve as catch basins for residential and industrial runoff. In fact, golf courses are effective disposal sites for effluent wastewater. The water used on a golf course can be an excellent investment in both economic and environmental terms. As a result of computerized irrigation systems and improved turfgrass varieties, courses now use less water efficiently to achieve the same level of conditioning. Continuing research will provide even more “low-water” turfgrass varieties in the future.

In addition, no reputable golf course superintendent would cover an entire course with pesticides and fertilizers. Most of the property often consists of natural areas that require little maintenance and include diverse varieties of native plants and trees.

As a Member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association, we take our relationship with the environment very seriously. Most enter the profession with college degrees and a love for nature and the outdoors; that is why we all give the highest priority to management practices that have a positive impact on the environment.

Watering Your Flower Gardens & Landscapes by Kayne Hoecht, Community Maintenance Supervisor

Properly watering home landscape and garden plants is one of the most misunderstood problems facing the average gardener. We’re aware of the fact that things can get extremely dry in the Lowcountry during summer and this lack of rainfall will stress your plants resulting in problems such as disease and infestation.

Proper watering helps your newly installed plants adapt to its new environment, as water moves nutrients through the plant to regulate its temperature. If soil around the base is wet, consider holding off on watering until the soil dries. Soil type and amount of rainfall should determine the frequency and amount of supplemental water that may be required. During hot, windy summer weather, you may need to water every day while cooler temperatures and rain will reduce your watering needs. Don’t make the mistake of assuming that if a little water is good, then a lot will be better. Too much water in your soil reduces the level of oxygen to the plant and will damage the root system. Checking soil conditions is the best way to make your wa-tering decisions. Typically, your new plants need water for the first 4-6 weeks after planting and during periods of hot, dry weather. After the first year however, your plants will be established and require little, if any supplemental watering.

Hwy #278 Construction UpdateConstruction on Highway 278 is scheduled to be complete by November 2013. We have been advised by the DOT that the curbing for our small islands at the main entrance to the Club will be complete, as well as placement of the mast arm that controls the traffic signals at the intersection. The mast arm replaces the old stop light system that is presently being hung from wires. Once this work is complete our clean-up work will begin. A new irrigation system will then be installed and we will be planting new shrubs and flowers.

Hole #17 ~ South Course

With the return of sunny skies and warm water temperatures, we will witness more and more wildlife activity in the Okatie River and sur-rounding Salt Marsh. Migratory birds that win-tered here are returning north and the waders are out in full force. You may notice, especially in the evening, that the trees lining the river banks and fresh water lagoons are nearly overflowing with nesting herons and egrets. Hatchlings will begin to appear in the next few weeks and take flight in the early weeks of summer.

If you are on the water, the real treat may be watching the dolphins. They are every-where! The quiet and remote upper reaches of the Okatie River are an ideal playground for them.

Members of the Cetacean family, the Atlan-tic Bottlenose Dolphin, can reach lengths of between 7 and 12 feet and may live for 30 years. Each dolphin has a distinctly in-dividual color and personality. Locals will recognize resident dolphins by the shape

of their dorsal fin and sometimes assign them nicknames such as hook and stubby.

Mating most often oc-curs in the spring and the female will carry that single baby for a full year. Delivery is done

tail first in a watery birth place. Dolphin calves will remain with the mother or fe-male group for nearly 2 years, learning how to fish and communicate. Social behaviors are taught to the young during this time as well. Speaking of social behaviors, it is not unusual to get up close and personal with a dolphin as you are enjoying a kayak tour or boat cruise. You will watch them play, feed and frolic just several feet from your boat.

Guided 2-hour kayak nature tours are scheduled every Monday from 9-11 and Fridays from 3 to 5pm. These tours are led by Captain Eric Burns, who is a trained in-terpretive naturalist. Remember to dress in layers and bring along your binoculars. Contact Concierge Services at 843.815.8494 to schedule your tour.
