" Lag Ba'Omer

Did you know...?

A De-light-ful HolidayThe article on this page talks about Lag BaOmer. One of the most popular customs on Lag BaOmer is lighting bonres. The word ( lehadleek) to light comes from the root letters .--Words based on these root letters are connected to re. For example, all types of fuel are called in Hebrew ( delek) fuel, gas. A gas station attendant is called a ( metdalek). The act of putting gas in a car is called ( tidluk). A re is called ( dleikah). When a person lights a re, we say he ( madleek) the re. Note that when someone turns on a light or an electrical appliance, we also say that he ( madleek) it. When a ame or a light is lit, we say it is ( doleket). If something is ammable, we say it is ( daleek). These words have an obvious connection to the root .-- Now lets look at some less obvious examples. The Hebrew word for an infection or inammation is ( daleket). In Hebrew slang, words with the --letters express situations that involve a strong positive or negative emotion in a person. For example: * - It angered him. * - He had the hots for her. * - He is a really cool guy.

The Pied Piper of Hamelin in Jerusalem

Flute and FlautistThe article to the right, mentions the character of the Pied Piper. The word ( chalilan) autist comes from the word for the instrument the person plays, the (chalil) ute. In Hebrew, the word for a person who plays a specic instrument is based on the name of the instrument. For some instruments, it is easy to form the word for the person who plays it: all you need to do is add the letter ( )to the end of the word. Sometimes, you also have to remove the last letter of the instrument. The letter that appears before the last letter will be punctuated with a kamatz. This is how it works: * ( chalil) ute ( chalilan) autist * ( chatzotzra) trumpet ( chatzotzran) trumpeter * ( chelo) cello ( chellan) cellist * ( kleedeem) keyboard ( kleedan) keyboardist * ( nevel) harp ( navlan) harpist * ( psanter) piano ( psantran) pianist Note that this method ONLY works for the instruments listed above (and not all instruments).':

, , . . " ," . " ." : .

The literal meaning of the word is belongs, connected to something, under the ownership of someone. Its slang meaning, however, is a bit different. This word is used primarily among Ultra-Orthodox and religious people. Usually, it expresses words such as correct, suitable, relevant, etc. For example, instead of saying, Does it bother you that I arrive early in the morning? One can say, Is it that I come early in the morning? Here are some examples of this slang in action: * Its not to come to the party in those clothes. * Do you think it is to set those two people up on a date? * Is it to bring this type of present to a Bar Mitzvah?

Hebrew You Already Know...Many words in the Hebrew language are actually based on other languages. Here are some words in Hebrew, that are words that you already know. Some of these words come from Aramaic, a sister language to Hebrew, but many of them, particularly the ones with modern meanings, come from other languages.

An Ancient and Historic Ship

Agunah - AnchoredIn the article about the Spanish ship on this page, we wrote that the ship ( agnah) docked in the port. We used the Hebrew word which comes from the word (ogen) anchor. This word brings us to a very interesting word in the Hebrew language, a word taken from the Bible. According to Jewish law, a woman who does not know if her husband is alive cannot marry again. This woman is called an ( aguna). It is as though the woman is connected by an anchor to her husband, even though she doesnt know where he is or what is happening to him. After the Holocaust, many women faced the problem of being an , as many husbands had disappeared and nobody knew what happened to them. The rabbis did everything they could to liberate the women from their ( aginut). In many cases, it was deemed logical to assume that the men had been killed, thus making their wives widows and freeing them from a status of . Nowadays, this phenomenon is less common, but there are still dozens of women who are dened as according to Jewish law, and rabbis cannot nd a solution for all of them. Some of these women have been in this situation for decades. The most famous case of this is Tami Arad, the wife of Ron Arad, the Israeli pilot who disappeared in Lebanon more than two decades ago. No one knows whether he is alive or not, and for all of these years, his wife has remained an . 13 Answers on page 15
