Emily’s article in the last issue of the “Bugle” inspired me to take a trip down Memory Lane. I too, wanted to work in a bank to “play with the rubber stamps”.

I was born in 1939 and brought up in The Five Alls, the only child of Ethel and Cyril Chaplin. In those days it was just a beer house. A wine and spirit license wasn’t obtained until 1957. There was no bar and as you went in the front door the tap room was to the right. Our front room was to the left and there was a passage straight down the middle which led to the cellar, stairs and kitchen.

Now I’m speaking about the early 1940’s. Dad was in the army and was taken prisoner of war so Mum ran the pub. I remember the old men (suppose they were younger than I am now) but to me as a child they were old. They came in every day after lunch for a pint and a game of dominoes. After the game they would sometimes stand me on the table in the corner and get me to sing.

DOWN MEMORY LANE

The tables had metal frames and scrubbed tops which Mum did every day when she also scrubbed the wooden floor. As a reward I was given a big penny and they would delight in letting me have a drink from their glass, well not as such but Mum would get a good head on the bitter especially, as it was pulled straight from the wood. Brass taps were driven with a wooden mallet into the barrels kept in the cellar.

the men would have a good laugh when the froth would go right across my face. Songs I was taught were: You are my Sunshine, Lavender Blue and Buttons and Bows. At a church garden fete I won 15/- for singing, I was only 3 but Donny Buttress should have won – he could sing but he was 15.

However to get back on track a cashier from Barclays Bank in Ramsey cane to the village every Thursday accompanied by an ->

elderly gentleman who was the driver and bodyguard. The bank was in Granny Savage’s front room, a cottage situated next to the Methodist chapel.

Customers would stand outside until it was their turn to go in. The counter was very high and I looked forward to going when Mum paid in the weekly takings from the pub. I had to be lifted to see what was going on and was fascinated with the rubber stamps. Then we would cross the road to the Post Office where Mrs. Morriss was the Post Mistress. Mum would buy me a savings stamp with a union jack flag on it, That cost half a crown (2/6d) but when you got 15/- worth of stamps a certificate was is-sued and once again rubber stamps were involved on the certificate and counterfoil. I was hooked. Now the dray lorry delivered the beer on a Wednesday. Back then it came from Hall, Cutlack & Harlock, the brewery in Ely. Mum was given an invoice for it but again I was interested in how banks worked as a cheque had to be received at Ely on the Monday morning or there was no delivery on the next Wednesday.

Therefore every Sunday Mum would write the cheque (Barclays cheques were green then and had a blue oval stamp in the corner with George VI

head on, believe it was stamp duty) and I would have to post the letter before 2.30pm when the post box was emptied. Time has moved on and now aged sixteen after leaving March High School I applied to the banks for a job and was successful at the old Trustee Savings Bank in Ramsey. There was no public transport from Benwick to Ramsey so I cycled there and back every day, but I loved the job and saw many changes working there for 34 years.

At my retirement party I told my col-leagues the reason I worked there was to “play with the rubber stamps”. This caused some laughter but on my appraisals it always said “Janet has a good rapport with customers”, a fact I put down to growing up and mixing with the people of this village. •

Cllr Mark Chapman, Chairman of Benwick Parish Council reported on the Council’s activities over the past year at the Annual Parish Meeting in April.

Cllr Chapman thanked the departing councillors Tony Richardson, Kevin Sutton and Pat Tickner for their work over the last few years and stated they will be missed from the Council.

The Parish has a healthy enough budget to have a 0% increase in the Precept and earmarked funds have been allocated to the cemetery extension, upkeep and cleaning of the war memorial and also the mooring.

The street lights position has improved this year, thanks to Cllr Richardson, as 11 Category 1 street lights are to be replaced, paid for by Fenland District Council, and they will also fund the power and maintenance for all the street lights. This result has taken a lot of hard work to achieve.

The Cycle Race is to be held again in 2015, and there will be 2 races this

year in June and July.

The Play Park is being progressed and funding will be looked into next year. Activity on work is hoped to start next winter.

The traffic improvement on the High Street has been installed following representation to the council by parishioners regarding speeding on the High Street.

A new website has been created by the Clerk at which has been designed to allow easy access by Parishioners to documents, such as minutes.A flagpole was erected next to War Memorial as part of WWI commemorations.

The issue of dog excrement has been raised to the Council and an exercise to try and highlight the problem has taken place.

SCHOOL GOVERNORS

NEEDED

Benwick School is looking to co-opt two Governors. Co-opted governors are governors from the wider community with little or no links to the school.

Ideally the governors will have skills in Finance, Business, Personnel or Buildings –however these skills are not essential and the only commitment that is asked is just a few hours per month to support the school.

If you know anyone that would make a good Co-opted Governor please email Darren Gore on [email protected] or speak to the Head teacher. •

We are still enjoying a variety of speakers and outings. A change of speaker was needed in April due to a cancellation.

Paul Howe our speaker for Septem-ber stepped in at the last minute and we had fun hearing his exploits when setting up a smallholding near Turves. Now a change will be have to be made to the September programme.

The next meeting will be at March museum at 7.00 on Monday 18th May.

On June 15th Rosemary Taylor from Benwick is showing us how reflexology can help us. The talk will be followed by our annual strawberry feast where we try a variety of desserts prepared by members.

We have decided that all our meetings need to start at 7.00 and not at 7.30 on some occasions. Our speakers will be asked to begin at 7.00 and all business and social activities will follow on from them. •

On Wednesday 11th March, 23 children from classes 3 and 4 went to Wembley Arena for Voice in a Million 2015. Although some of us had been to VIAM last year, we had lots of children who were having their first experience of the event and the excitement levels were high for all.

This year the event was the largest yet and so our 23 children were a small (but essential) part of the choir. We sang a range of songs including, All of Me, Let it Go, Never Forget and Rescue Me and the children sang beautifully.

All of the children that went had a fantastic time and were incredibly well behaved, I was very proud of them all. •

VOICE IN A MILLION

It was the most exhilarating experience that I have ever had in my 28 and half years of working here at Benwick School.

It was great to see this concert of 6,500 children come together, it seemed an almost impossible task during afternoon rehearsals but like true troopers they came through and the children sung their hearts out. It was great to sing along with Alesha Dixon and Bars and Melody, we were also dancing all night long to the songs (all my aerobics for the year completed along with very sore feet the next day!). The song ‘Chil-dren United’ with Alysha Dixon was recorded on the night and will be available to download shortly so we will also be recording stars!!

This was a really great experience for the children and if we are able to go again I do hope that you will let your child/children take part, it was so worthwhile.

Thank you to the children for being so good, Mrs Wood and Miss Turner for their hard work every Monday coaching the choir and to Mrs North for letting me out for the day! •

You may have noticed some activity across the nation on the political front. It’s General Election time again.

Out of interest we asked the Scouts if they would like to challenge our parliamentary candidates with a question and answer session. To my surprise, they said they would.

So I invited all 5 candidates for the consituency to come and meet the Scouts. Lucy Nethsinga (Lib Dem), Ken Rustidge (Labour) and Helen Scott-Daniels (Green) accepted and came along on April 21st or sent a

substitute. Unfortunately, Stephen Barclay (Conservative) and Andrew Charalambous (UKIP) did not attend.

The scouts had pre-prepared their questions, which they put to the candidates themselves. The questions were very mature and the candidates found them interesting and challenging. The one about homework at school generated quite some debate – as two of the candidates are teachers!

Controlled DrowningLast month some of the scouts attempted to drown themselves. However, the instructors from the Dive In Centre at Whittlesey were very diligent in teaching them how to use SCUBA equipment and snorkels correctly, and none of them drowned. They all came out of the pool tired and wanting to do it again. -->

Cub NewsLorna and Emma continue to run an active and interesting programme for the Cubs and numbers are building up.

They have now been joined by two Young Leaders (young people aged 14 - 18), Drew Peters and Richard Pembury, who help with running games and activities.

Not being adults, they can’t be left alone to supervise the Cubs so we still need more adults to help.

Beaver ColonyThe Beaver Colony is still suspended as we still have no-one to run it.

In this we, as a community, are letting our young people down. The Chief Scout, Bear Grylls, says - ‘I think it’s so hard for young people to get out and experience the outdoors – it can be quite an intimidating place – lots of people don’t know how to get out there.

Scouting provides a safe way to ex-plore the outdoors. They’re going to have an adventure, but they’re going to do it with people they know and trust, and they’re going to be looked after.

As a society, we do tend to get bogged down with ‘you can’t do this,

you can’t do that’ and I think it’s a shame – kids lose out on so much of the magic of the outdoors.

I want kids to learn how to start fires without matches, build camps, climb mountains. Our ancestors had these skills for generations and now we are in danger of losing them.’

Through the adventure of Scouting, young people get to take risks in a safe environment, and have their first taste of responsibility. We give young people experiences they’ll never forget.

The sort of adventure Scouting offers is the chance to experience something different and the opportunity to challenge yourself.

When a Beaver Scout wakes up the morning after a sleepover, or Cub Scout has just got over her fear of heights by completing her first abseil - that’s adventure.

Just think what YOU, an adult, will get out of helping these young people make those achievements.

HELP FIND MABEL

Mabel went missing on Saturday 18th April at approx 3pm after being chased by a dog.

Mabel has a sad story behind her and her owner, Vicki, has spent the last 18 months socialising her. She was feral when she came to Vicki and is still very nervous around people. The day she went missing was the first day exploring on their fence in Fields View. It is likely that she has gone to ground. It is believed that she was seen in a garden shed on Old West the following morning.

She had not been seen since. Please could you check any of your sheds / outbuildings and gardens for her. Mabel is very much missed.

Please call Vicki on 677 617 or 07882 223 109 or email [email protected] with any information or sightings. •

We ventured to London to meet friends and do a bit of sheep hunting.

The Sweetpeas had never been into London before and were very excited about going down on the train and being able to stay over in a hotel.

On the train were a fantastic group of hens which had little toy puppies on leads. Harvey thought they sounded like they were having great fun whereas Alyssa asked what a Hen Party was and then finished up with “ that sounds fun but I’m never getting married.”

The train journey was only an hour long but Harvey felt the need for a little nap anyway. He had got a big day ahead of him as, at the moment there are 50 huge Shaun the Sheep models scattered around the Capital and you have to hunt them down.

It was a really interesting kind of journey round as it meant I got to see lots of parts of London that I had never seen before as well as some of the more interesting “tourist” parts. We had great fun over the 2 days and we managed to find “all baaaa 7”

SWEETPEAS AND MEby Emily Shepperson

We stopped the night at Apollo Hotel in London Bayswater. I had requested a twin room with an extra single bed. What I actually received was 2 bunk beds. One very noisy and wobbly one and one that had quite a dangerous spring poking out of the mattress right near the ladder. I was instantly returned to the days of sitting on the bottom bunk of my brother’s bunk bed and getting my long hair tangled up in the springs of the top bunk. Bunks beds and I have been enemies ever since.

Harvey somehow managed to lock the bathroom door from outside meaning that we couldn’t get back into it. He did try to do the manly thing of trying to break in but we were seriously lacking with tools. He used a teabag instead. Tea is supposed to solve many problems but unfortunately opening doors isn’t one of them. •

In the early 90’s a cookbook was released to raise funds for the school. We take a look at some of the recipes submitted.

Give them a go and let us know how you get on!

Mandarin Delight by Lyn Keppel-Spoor

60g pudding rice, 30g butter, 1 pint milk, 2 eggs, 85g caster sugar, 30g caster sugar and 1 tin of mandarin oranges.

Melt the butter in a pan and add the milk and rice. Boil gently until thick and creamy. Add the 30g caster sugar and, after cooling, add the egg yolks.

Cover the base of a deep ovenproof disk with mandarin oranges and pour over the rice mixture.

Beat the egg whites until stiff and add ½ the remaining sugar – beat and then fold in the remaining sugar. Pile the meringue on top of rice and bake for 20 minutes at 170oC until slightly brown.
