Akwaaba, Miawoezor, Welcome to cool temperate Accra.

February is one of the months which gives the capital not-so-balmy nights, such that you can enjoy the outdoors even more. Now, that is so needed in this month of love, when the town is set ready to be painted red!Love is indeed in the air, with Valentine looming. Many restaurants and food joints are adapting their decor to reflect the mood of the season. Valentine is a big thing in Accra. Everywhere, you will find merchandise and promotional packages being offered by restau-rants, hotels and shops. Not to mention the drumming of it on the airwaves. If you find it all too much, perhaps, you can take an hour drive out of town to Stone Lodge (Pg ..) where you can still have a fabulous time together with your partner without it being as though you were part of the circus! Or go to Aburi, also a short drive away, and stay at the newly opened Lansdown Resort, or Hilburi. Or go fur-ther afield towards the west, to Axim and hibernate at the fabulous Lou Moon Lodge. This month, the Africa Cups of Nations continues in Equitorial Guin-ea and Gabon. In Accra, there will be viewing centres across town. It is fun joining others here, especially when our Black Stars are playing. We are routing for the Black Stars and wishing them all the very best in the games, and we’ll be at the viewing centre on Osu Ox-ford Street, where all the fun will be for the next two or so weeks screaming ourselves hoarse for the Black Stars!

Smollensky’sOn the roof top of the Procredit building in Airport Residential Area, oppisite the Silver Star Towers, set in a breezy open space, and from its balcony, you can see the capital city of Accra spread in all its greenery across the plane, and the busy flow of traffic below. An unpretentious venue, Smollensky’s gets its name from the restaurant chain in London, where owner and head chef Gerry Boret ran its kitchens for several years. Back home to live in Ghana, Gerry wanted to re-live his West End and Canary Wharf experi-ences so he opened this cute eatery which serves a variety of fusion dishes.I had the Grilled fish of the day - and today it is Grouper - with a creamy white sauce which has a tangy cheese and white wine blast on the palate, the subtelty of which coupled with the pieces of crunchy cubed vegetable makes it simply a delight. But, I couldn’t help noticing on the menu, a list of other equally titilating dishes, includ-ing seafood, and some fabulous steaks. The mains include Lobster Pesto Cream Linguine - with sundried tomatoes and fresh basil [GhC25], Salmon Delight with a parsley sauce and herb potatoe cake [GhC22] and Medalloin of Filet [GhC24] served with rich mushrom creamy sauce. For starers, you can have the Avocado and prawn salad [GhC16], or Mediterranean which comes with cubes of cheese, olives, peppers and a house dressings [GhC15] and their salad Nicoise drizzled with a moist balsamic vinaigrette [GhC14] is to die for!Smollensky’s has a well stocked bar that serves most drinks also, and tends to be a good place to hang out till the uptown traf-fic subsides.

Getting Around

New road arrangements; one-way systems and fly-overs, supposed to help to ease traffic in the inner city, doesn’t seem to be working! The traffic is getting worse! Nonetheless, getting around in the Central Business District is now fairly easy. Once you know a landmark near your destination - street names are not popular – you can get to where you want to go quite easily. Ask for which neigh-bourhood you’re going, and the nearest landmark. By Bus: Several mini buses and Lorries known as ‘Tro-tro’ run regular routes in the inner city, and while congested, it is the most inexpensive way to travel. The Metro Mass Transport service, recently introduced large buses run on many routes too. By Taxi: The distinctive Ghana taxi - with yellow painted mud guards- are in plenty and run a

shared, or hire

service called

‘dropping’. The shared service picks and drops passengers along a particular route while the hire service, which any taxi would usu-ally oblige, takes passengers directly to their destination. You must, however, determine what you pay before embark-ing on your journey. Different rates apply for different trips, but the current hourly rate for taxi is between GhC8 per hour for more than 5 hours and GhC10 for less. By Car: While traveling by car is fairly easy, many visitors find driving in inner Accra, cumber-some. Many commercial driv-ers flaunt traffic regulations and while this rarely results in serious accidents, it can be frustrating. Many car rental companies in town provide drivers as well, and this may be a better alternative. Contact the Car Rental Association of Ghana on, or the Accra Visitor Service, 0244.69.7046 for a

rec-om-

mendation.On Foot: Recent improve-

ments in clearly demarcated pavements have helped to make walking, which is the cheapest way to get around, a lot more easy. The only snug may be the heat of the scorch-ing sun if you are not well protected. So get your straw hat and sunglasses out! Be careful though, particularly in the Central Business District, as the many other pedestrians can push you onto the road. Always try to walk facing on-coming traffic.Inter-City TravelA number of private coach companies run a schedule ser-vice to all the regional capitals, and most major other towns. Also, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has buses that ply major towns. There are also ‘Fast Cars’, hatchback saloons that go very fast to the destination for about twice the price of the regular schedule routes. Be advised not to take them after dark. Many begin their journey at the major lorry station at Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATIONLocal Time Ghana is on one time zone; Greenwich Mean Time. Driving License: Visitors planning to drive or hire a car must have an interna-tional Drivers License. Electricity: Most hotels have 3-pin or 2-pin sockets op-erating at 220 volts which accept British and European standard plugs. What To Wear: It is really just hot all year round, but in January and February, the dry Hamattan wind blows in from the Sahara. Otherwise, it is generally humid in the south and hot/dry upcoun-try in the north, so wear natural fiber materials like cotton, linen.

VISITOR SERVICESTo Help You The Ac-cra Visitor Service (t. 0244.69.7046) provides a city concierge service and can help you plan an itiner-ary for an excursion, and generally point you in the right direction.
