GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

Listed below you will find the requirements for graduation from Benson High School. It is very important you take time to choose the

appropriate courses at each level of your high school career. Depending on your goal: 4-year college, community college, technical

school, the military service or the world of work, you must choose the courses that will meet your needs. If you are in doubt, discuss

your interests with your parents and consult our counseling office for the proper direction.

The class of 2011 and beyond will need a total of 25 academic credits to graduate from Benson High School with a Basic Diploma.

Advanced and Honor’s Diploma’s are available. Those requirements are listed below. Please see the counselor or the principal to

discuss the criteria for graduating under unusual circumstances.

Graduation eligibility requires good attendance, receiving passing grades in required course work and accumulating the required

number of credits. Receiving a Benson High School diploma will be based in part on AIMS test scores, district assessments and

district administered standardized tests. All students are required to meet or exceed the Reading, Writing, and Math portions of the

Arizona Instrument to Measure Standards Exam (AIMS) as a requirement of graduation.

Directions for choosing your courses: 1. Students must take a minimum of four required courses each term through the sophomore year.

2. Students will not be allowed to take English, Math or Social Studies courses out of sequence.

3. Seniors in good standing and who meet the requirements may request a reduced schedule with a minimum of 6 classes.

Students must submit a request to the counselor and principal with the written approval of parents. This request must be made

within the 1st week of the school year or upon enrollment.

4. There will be no schedule changes after the 2nd

week of the semester. If extenuating circumstances exist, then a schedule

change will be made but the student will receive a “WF” grade (Withdraw Fail) on their transcript for the dropped course.

DUAL/REVERSE CREDIT CLASSES

Cochise College dual credit and reverse credit courses are available depending upon the state legislature. The courses eligible are

noted in the Table of Contents as Dual Credit or Reverse Credit. A Reverse Credit class is a college level course that is taught by an

assigned staff member from Cochise College on the campus of Benson High School. A Dual Credit class is a college level course that

is taught by a Benson High School staff member for Cochise College. In either case, credit is awarded for both high school and

college credit. During the first week of class, a Cochise College representative will come to the above listed classes to register those

interested in dual credit. Arrangements will be made prior to the class beginning for the student to take the Cochise College Placement

Exam.

DUAL / REVERSE CREDIT "TUITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM"

Cochise College tuition and fees must be paid to the college but the textbooks are provided by Benson High School. The tuition rate

for Benson High School students will be based on a typical 3-credit course. While the actual cost for a 3-credit course is $70 per

credit, Benson High School students will be responsible for paying 50% of the total cost while Benson High School will pay the

remaining balance. For example: ENG 101 is a 3 credit course. 3 X $70= $210. Student cost $105. BHS pays $105 plus the book.

All currently enrolled BHS students are eligible for the reduced tuition rate but must achieve a "C" or better in all Dual / Reverse

Credit courses to remain eligible for future courses. Any student that fails to meet this academic expectation will be responsible for

the full tuition costs for all future courses that they enroll in. In addition, any student that fails to meet the academic requirements or

“drops” a course will be responsible for FULL reimbursement to the Benson Unified School District for any College Tuition payment

made on their behalf. All prerequisites must be met as described in the course description in addition to Cochise College admission

requirements.

GRADE SCALE / GPA CALCULATIONS

Benson High School utilizes two separate Grade Scales as determined by the level of the course. All regular education courses are

graded on the Level I scale while Advanced Level courses are graded on the Level II Scale. The Level II scale is utilized to encourage

students to enroll in a more challenging course while being given more latitude in the grading scale. All GPA calculations are

computed on a 4.0 scale.

SERVICE LEARNING OPPORTUNITY PROGRAMS

Service Learning is an activity, which enhances the educational experience at Benson High School.

What is Service Learning?

1. Service Learning is “An educational activity, program, or curriculum that seeks to promote student learning through

experiences associated with volunteerism or community service.” “

2. Service learning activities must benefit the “community”, and cannot be a part of a student’s normal participation in a

curricular, co-curricular, or extracurricular activity.

3. Service learning provides a link between classroom instruction and the student’s community. Service learning engages the

student in volunteer activity, which benefits both the student and the community.

4. Service learning activities benefit the student by: developing a pattern of volunteerism and participation in the community’s

life, using classroom skills and information in working situations, giving opportunities to work with other people, and

providing hands-on experience in potential vocational opportunities.

5. Service learning activities benefit the community as students are seen in a positive light actively involved in meaningful

service events.

HIGH HONORS TUITION SCHOLARSHIP

HIGH HONORS TUITION SCHOLARSHIP Available beginning the first Fall semester after a student graduates from high school, or upon successful completion of high

school course work.

Must be utilized by the first Spring semester after a student graduates from high school, or upon successful completion of

high school course work. Contact individual universities for exact deadlines for claiming award.

A 25% Fixed* In-State University Tuition Scholarship for one year following high school graduation to students who meet

the qualifications listed on the next page

Renewable for an additional 3 years, based upon meeting University established criteria

This is a university scholarship, all criteria and process for the renewability, transferability, applicability is at the sole

discretion of each university independently.

QUALIFICATIONS (CLASS OF 2013 & BEYOND)

Students must have Arizona residency with lawful immigration status AND meet the following academic criteria:

Part 1 (Core Competency)

Complete all 16 Core Competency Courses by graduation with a B* or better or receive an acceptable score (*See Table 1)on the Advance

Placement (AP) or a 4 on the International Baccalaureate (IB) exam for that subject matter. The 16 Core Competency Courses as defined by the Arizona Board of Regents Tri-University Admission requirements are: 4 units English; 4 units

Math; 3 units Lab Science; 2 units Social Science; 2 units Foreign Language; and 1 unit Fine Arts.

* A "C" in a weighted course (Honors or Advance Placement course) does not convert to a "B". The grade is as reflected on the student's transcript.

If a student receives a “C” in any unit of credit of a core course (weighted or unweighted), he/she must complete one of the following options to

remain eligible: 1) Retake the unit of credit and receive a “B” or better; 2) Take an additional unit of credit in that subject matter and receive a “B” or

better; 3) Receive an acceptable score (*See Table 1) on the Advance Placement (AP) exam or a 4 on the International Baccalaureate (IB) exam for

that subject area.

AND

Part 2 (GPA/Class Rank)

Students must meet at least one of the following academic requirements: Option 1: GPA: A minimum core GPA of 3.50 in the 16 competency courses on an un-weighted 4.00 scale OR for those districts which use a 5.00

scale for IB/AP/Honors courses, an equivalent core GPA on a weighted scale that meets or exceeds the value in *Table 2.

Option 2: Class Rank: Student is in the top 5% of their high school graduating class.

AND

Part 3 (AIMS Exams - Reading, Writing, and Math)

Students must meet at least one of the following assessment options:

Option 1: EXCEED Standards on all 3 of the AIMS HS exams by the end of their junior year. Option 2: EXCEED Standards on 2 of the AIMS exams and MEET Standards on 1 of the AIMS HS exams by the end of their junior year.

Additionally, student would need to receive a minimum score of 3 on two Advanced Placement exams or a minimum score of 4 on two

International Baccalaureate exams. AP/IB exams may be taken during the senior year.

AND

Part 4 (ACT/SAT1) Students must meet at least one of the following admissions test options and submit scores to the universities they apply

to:

English I Requirements: 9

th Grade

Year-Long Course: 1 Credit

Course Prerequisite: Minimum Score of Approaches on 8th

Grade AIMS

Degree of Difficulty: High

A survey in interpretation of short stories and poems, it provides the in-depth reading and discussing of two plays and a novel and the

learning of literary terms related to all the aforementioned genres. Students will practice writing acceptable answers to essay

questions. Vocabulary lessons will be developed from the readings. This course concentrates on the writing of narrative, descriptive

and expository paragraphs with an emphasis on sentence structure, spelling, and correct use of capitalization, punctuation, nouns,

pronouns and verbs. The student will write a 3-4-page research paper, a short story, and autobiography and two book reports. Each

writing will include a preliminary outline. The semester incorporates a structured vocabulary study. Students will receive instruction

in the school’s writing sample and preparation for the writing portion of the AIMS test.

English II Requirements: 10

th Grade


Course Prerequisite: English I


Reviews and extends students’ knowledge and skills in interpreting short stories, essays, and poems; in writing about literature; and in

using literary terminology. Students read and respond to a variety of literary selections, including the novel. This course concentrates

on the writing of essays of 3-5 paragraphs with emphasis on the steps of the writing process; sentence structure effectiveness; using

capitalization, punctuation and spelling; and in selecting appropriate nouns, pronouns, verbs and modifiers. The student will write

essays, including the persuasive essay. Students will receive instruction in the school’s writing sample and preparation for the writing

portion of the AIMS test.

Honors English II Requirements: 10

th Grade


Course Prerequisite: English I

Degree of Difficulty: Very High

Reviews and extends students’ knowledge and skills in interpreting short stories, essays, and poems; in writing about literature; and in

using literary terminology. Students read and respond to a variety of literary selections, including the novel. This course concentrates

on the writing of five paragraph essays with emphasis on the steps of the writing process; sentence structure effectiveness; using

capitalization, punctuation and spelling; and in selecting appropriate nouns, pronouns, verbs and modifiers. The student will write

essays, including the persuasive essay. Students will receive instruction in the school’s writing sample. Students will also work to

pass (with an emphasis on exceeding) the reading and writing portion of the AIMS test.

The course offers intensive and extensive reading selections of major world authors and emphasizes skills in critical reading and

thinking, literary analysis, and literary terminology. Students will also read four novels and two plays by world authors; they will

choose an author to research in depth for a written and oral report. Vocabulary will focus on context words from the literature sections

and PSAT-PLAN vocabulary list. This course concentrates on mastery of the parts of speech and the parts of a sentence along with

the function of the kinds of phrases and clauses used.

English III Requirements: 11

th Grade


Course Prerequisite: English II


This course concentrates on continuing practice in the writing process: from pre-writing through first-draft revisions and re-writes.

The course emphasizes clear sentence and paragraph construction, correct choice of words and the thorough development of ideas

when writing essays or creative writings. Students will write expository, persuasive, descriptive and narrative paragraphs; five essays;

a short story or a one-act play; poems; business letters; a novella; and an 8-10 page research paper to present orally. The semester

incorporates structured vocabulary study. Literature involves American Literature from its beginnings to modern day. Students will

receive instruction in the school’s writing sample and preparation for the reading or writing portion of the AIMS test if they have not

yet met the requirements to pass.

Students who have met but not exceeded the AIMS reading or writing will be encouraged to take one or both of these tests to exceed.

Honors English III - (Dual Credit Optional - ENG 101) Requirements: 11

Course Prerequisite: B or better in English classes + Meets or Exceeds on the AIMS Reading and Writing Exams.

The course offers intensive and extensive reading selections of major American authors and emphasizes skills in critical reading and thinking,

literary analysis, and literary terminology. Students will also read six novels and four plays by American authors; they will choose an author

to research in depth for a written and oral report. Vocabulary will focus on context words from the literature sections and SAT-ACT

vocabulary list. This course concentrates on mastery of the parts of speech and the parts of a sentence along with the function of the kinds of

phrases and clauses used. Students will receive instruction in the school’s writing sample and preparation for the writing portion of the AIMS

test.

The Benson Bobcat Band is a combination marching and concert band. This band will perform at home football games and will

participate at any band days made possible. The Bobcat Band will also perform at the local parades, girls and boys basketball games

and will present a semester concert. The band will also perform at regional contest and other events that the director feels are

appropriate for the band and community.

Grading: Each performance is a part of the grade as well as participation on a daily basis. To letter in band a student must participate

in all facets and complete any and all testing required by the instructor. Auditions may be required. The band class is scheduled as a

yearlong class with the final grade given at the end of the year. Students will be responsible for uniforms and equipment checked out

to them during the year.

Cochise County Tech Prep currently provides one-half the tuition rate while the student is responsible for the remaining one-half cost.

Students are required to participate in clinical sessions that will be scheduled outside of the regular school day. Arrangements must

be made to participate in the required sessions. Students taking this course must be enrolled for reverse-credit course with

Cochise College.

In this course, students use 3D solid modeling design software to help them design solutions to solve proposed problems. Students will

designed for 10th or 11th grade students and utilizes Project Lead the Way curriculum. The major focus of the IED course is to expose

students to the design process, research and analysis, teamwork, communication methods, global and human impacts, engineering

standards, technical documentation, and computer aided design.

Description: Engineering design, effective team participation and career preparation. Students are expected to participate in hands-on

Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree. Projects include Excel spreadsheets with solar ovens, and design of experiments with

GRAPHIC COMMUNICATIONS / CTE Introduction to Design/Art Requirements: 9

Introduction to Design/Art involves the practice of effective communication skills in the visual arts, problem solving and decision

making, as well as safe working procedures in the visual arts room. Legal and ethical behavior will be utilized as well as basic

computer concepts, operations, and application. Students will learn to draw and illustrate, create computer graphics and work with a

variety of mediums. 2D artworks as well as 3D artworks will be created.

Graphic Design 1 involves continuation of the lessons of beginning art and furthers those concepts. Employability skills participation

in Skills USA and oral communication are added to the students’ lessons. Students in Graphic Design 1 will continue on a path of

visual arts centered on Photoshop and InDesign. These students’ work will be begun as drawings and illustrations and then progress

into the technical areas of CS3 and CS4.

Graphic Design 2 will involve completion of InDesign and Photoshop assignments geared towards implementation of graphics

Digital Media Products and develop an individual career path for the graphic communication organization. Culmination will be the

Digital Photography 1 Requirements: 10

Digital Photography 1 students will demonstrate proficiency in photography and digital image editing. Students will be taking photos

for school and community displays, the 2010 yearbook, the school web site, and other publications. Knowledge of computers and

CTE internship is designed to provide an opportunity for the student to gain work experience in their program area of study while

earning an elective credit. Internship students will work a minimum of six hours per week, paid or volunteer. The cooperation

related to each student’s work placement. Placement in this class is by approval of the CTE teacher for the student’s program

JOURNALISM

Journalism / Yearbook Requirements: 9

The school yearbook (Annual), newspaper (Cat Tracks), and athletic programs (Bobcat Sports) are all school publications that are

produced during the course of the year.. Writing styles for newspaper and magazine publication are covered. Students will write

articles for the Benson community newspaper, (the News Sun) along with the school newspaper. Other areas include photography,

video production, sales and advertising, newspaper/magazine/yearbook page designing, computer editing, layout skills, and digital

photography (Photoshop). Students may take Journalism during all for years of high school. Advanced students will fill the roles of

editors and leaders in the various journalism departments.
