Benefits of Coffee

Wake up and smell the … antioxidants? If you think your morning cup of joe provides nothing more to your body

than a jolt of caffeine, you might be pleasantly surprised to learn that

your daily cup (or three) provides some health benefits as well. Drinking

moderate amounts of coffee (including decaf) has been linked to lower

risk of cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease and

some cancers.

And those antioxidants? Although researchers have yet to determine the exact mechanisms

behind some of the disease-preventing effects, it is important to keep in mind that these

compounds may be exerting other beneficial effects, such as acting as an anti-inflammatory.

Coffee also contains small amounts of some nutrients, including potassium, niacin and

magnesium.

Making your coffee a vehicle for fat-free milk is one way to improve your daily calcium and

vitamin D. If your diet does not include dairy, a fortified soy beverage is a calcium-rich

alternative.

So how much java is too much? It's wise to stick to no more than 3 to

4 cups per day. Certain groups, such as people with hypertension and

the elderly, may be more susceptible to the adverse effects of

caffeine. Pregnant and breast-feeding women will want to limit intake

to a maximum of 200 to 300 milligrams a day of caffeine (the amount

in 2 to 3 cups of coffee).

The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that pregnant women

cap caffeine consumption at 200 milligrams a day.

Fuel Assistance Income

And Asset Guidelines

The Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps eligible individuals and families pay part of their home heating costs. Applications will be accepted until May 31, 2019.

LIHEAP can help pay for the fuel you use to heat the home you live in from October through May if you buy your heating fuel from a fuel dealer or a utility company (fuel oil, propane, natural gas, electricity, wood coal or kerosene), or if your rent payments include heat and you do not receive a rent subsidy. The amount of benefits you may be eligible for depends on your income, the type and size of your home and the type of fuel used to heat your home.

To be eligible, the total income of all persons living in your household must be counted. Total income, after allowable deductions, must be below these limits:

1 person household:

$2,403 per month/$28,831 per year

2 person household:

$3,142 per month/$37,702 per year

3 person household:

$3,881per month/$46,573.00 per year

Written proof or verification of your income, your heating bill and medical expenses that can be deducted from your income is needed to be sure your eligibility and benefits are calculated correctly.

Application are available from Richland County Social Services or our office after

October 1, 2018.

5

Medicare Part D Annual Enrollment

October 15 – December 7th

Effective January 1, 2019

Reasons you should participate in this annual event include:

The prescription drug plans approved by Medicare are approved for one calendar year (January through

December). The private companies offering these plans must apply to Medicare to be approved each year, so plans change from year to year.

You can select the best plan that is available for you, with a goal of finding one that is the least expensive.

These plans are very different for each individual based on your current medications and which pharmacy or

pharmacies you use.

You may determine that based on your income and assets you qualify for Extra Help from Social Security

that could result in lower premium and prescription costs.

Options for enrollment assistance:

The North Dakota Insurance Department will conduct an information and enrollment session:

Country Inn & Suites, 3316 13th Ave S, Fargo on Wednesday, October 17th from 9 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Bring a list of your medications, including dosages and frequency, your Medicare card, and the full name of your

current plan. If you are attending an enrollment event and have a yellow retrieval card from the Insurance Department, bring it along to expedite assistance.

If you are not able to attend an enrollment session, you can begin a Part D plan comparison over the

phone by calling 2-1-1 from anywhere within North Dakota.

This free service is available from October 11th until November 16th. Please have your most up to date list of

medications and the name of the pharmacy you use. If you have a yellow retrieval card from previous plan

comparisons that number is helpful also. 211 will be available to gather your medication information and you will be asked about your income range and or assets to determine if you qualify for any available cost assistance programs.

The Insurance Department will complete the drug plan comparison and they will be mailed to you for your review.

The Insurance Department will not be mailing comparisons until on or after October 15, when Medicare’s computer

program allows them to begin. Please be patient. You can then make your choice and if you are making a change in

plans, you will call the plan you wish to enroll in.

You can compare plans using Medicare’s online Drug Plan Finder at: http://www.medicare.gov

Hey, Richland County! Let’s do lunch!

Abercrombie, Hankinson and Lidgerwood will be providing an open lunch hour starting October 1, 2018.

How does this work?

Because we know that not everyone is able and ready to eat at the time our sites have previously served lunch, lunch

will now be served between the following hours at the following specific locations within Richland County:

Abercrombie-M,T,W from 11:00 am –12:30 pm Hankinson-T,W,F from 11:00 am-12:30 pm

Lidgerwood-M,T,Th from 11:00 am-1:00 pm

The meals are available to individuals age 60 and older and their spouses, regardless of age, for a suggested

donation of $4.00 a meal.

Reservations are required to ensure that we have enough food prepared for everyone that day. You can make

reservations by calling your local senior center (phone numbers are listed on page 11) before 9:00 a.m. the day that

you would like to eat with us.

Still working?

No worries! Because we have expanded our serving times, you can come in on your lunch hour! You will be served

quickly so that you can get back to work in a timely manner.

Come join us! We would love to have you!
