AFTER 35 years in the real estate industry and 30 of those with the same company,

Drew Cahill of Dungey Carter Ketterer has seen a lot of houses change hands.

In 1976 he operated his own real estate agency in a little office at View Point.

“After two years I sensed smaller agencies would struggle for listings so I joined forces with L.L. Dungey and Son which consisted of Don Dungey, his son Rick and one sales-man,” Drew said.

“After three years I thought I needed a change so I moved to Echuca to manage a store for Boucher and Opie but soon realised it was not for me and on March 1, 1983 I returned to the newly merged com-pany of Dungey and Carter.

“There have been many changes, and in a lot of respects, it’s easier these days,” he said.

“Communication is fantastic now and three main things have made the job better

– open houses, email and mobile phones.“Prior to open houses we drove people

around in our cars looking at houses every day, so open homes allow people to view a property without taking up too much of our time, and fuel, so we spend our time more productively.

“Email makes communication to every-one so much easier, from issuing instruc-tions to solicitors, contacting clients and just communicating with fellow workers; there’s no more phone tag, calling each other back all day.

“Before mobile phones, we started with two-way radios, the in-car phone followed and now we have the smart phones of today which give us constant communication.”

After all that experience, Drew has a few words of advice for would-be agents.

“You need perseverance, dedication, and a strong will; like all things there will be dif-ficult times but you just have to keep going.

“You have to enjoy working with people, it comes down to having genuine empathy, understanding and patience.

“You need a can-do attitude, be creative and seek out business, you can’t just wait for it to happen.

“Basically, you need to be a nice person and be prepared to work hard for your clients.”

Summing up his 30 years at DCK, Drew said he wouldn’t have had it any other way.

“I’ve enjoyed it all, it’s been a great jour-ney, I’ve met some wonderful people and seen a lot of funny things happen along the way.

“This company has always had motivated directors and I’ve had a really successful working life here.

“I’ve been able to enjoy my career, my family life and my other great love, sport and fitness.

“I’ve loved every minute of it and look forward to a few more years before I think about retiring and the next chapter of my life.”
