where great things are always happening!
Welcome to Week 6 Term 4 November 14 , 2016
Last Saturday I attended the matinee performance of ‘The Little Prince’ along with several students and their
families. This was a truly lovely performance with a great costumes and set design. Congratulations to Ethan Hinds,
Skye Vaughan, Jeanne and Manon Perrin on their performances. Thank you to the students who came along to
support their classmates.
Congratulations to the BVPS teams who competed in the Armidale Triathlon on the weekend. A special thank you to
Amanda Swain who organised the teams and to Anne-Marie Pattinson who gave up her time to ensure our students
had the chance to participate. I am continually amazed by the dedication of BVPS staff who go above and beyond
what is expected to provide wonderful opportunities for our students.
Wow, Wow Wow! Our cricketers are one of only 8 teams in the state left in the PSSA Knockout Competition after a
comprehensive victory over Soldiers Point last week. The boys will now host another home game against South
West Rocks thisThursday.
The on-line parent ‘Tell Them From Me’ feedback survey has closed and the data has been sent to me for
consideration. Thank you to the 20 parents who completed this survey, your opinions are appreciated. Unfortunately,
with less than 3% of parents completing the survey, there was insufficient data to make informed decisions about
future planning. I will continue to explore additional ways to gain feedback from parents so we can continue to
ensure we are meeting community needs and expectations with our future planning.
Planning for 2017 has begun. I would ask that if you are not intending to return to BVPS in 2017 that you please
indicate this in writing. Additionally, if you will be returning to BVPS at a later date, it is imperative that we know the
date you will be returning.
Presentation Days
There will be a slight change to the format for our Presentation Days this year. The number of class awards will be
reduced to more accurately reflect student achievement. There will be additional awards to recognise many of the
characteristics and skills that we value at BVPS including giving your best and trying your hardest at all times. I
believe that these changes will ensure a wider variety of students are acknowledged and recognised for their efforts.
In addition to this, students receiving Excellence Pins will be acknowledged for their wonderful achievement during
this celebration.
Armidale Race Day 2017
Despite objection letters sent to council on behalf of the Department of Education, I have received notice that this
day will be a half day Public Holiday. Schools will be closed from 12:00 noon. Please begin to consider
arrangements for students on this day and ensure you take any complaints to council. This is not a school
decision.
Busy times ahead!
We still have many exciting events to add to our calendar

AROUND THE CLASSROOMS
1C The classroom is buzzing with activity this term, as
students engage in an array of learning experiences
across all curriculum areas.
Students are currently captivated by the story of
‘Charlotte’s Web’ by E B White. Everyone is very eager to
hear the ending of the story to see if Wilbur
will be saved. Last Monday we were
extremely lucky to have Mrs Toovey visit with
4 adorable piglets. Students were delighted in
the antics (and noise) of these week old
piglets. Students were able to watch them
drink from a bottle and feel the texture of their skin. It was
fantastic to be able to bring Charlotte’s Web to life in the
classroom with such a great hands-on experience. Thank
you so much Mrs Toovey and Polly.
Year 1 are looking forward to their History excursion this
term. At present the Armidale Folk Museum is
undergoing renovations, so we have had to postpone this
visit until later in the term. However, more details will be
sent home once we have confirmed a date for this event.
Our History unit is certainly generating some interesting
discussion in the classroom as students look at the
similarities and differences of past and present lifestyles.
This week each student is presenting a speech to the
class in relation to their own special piece of family
history. We are very much looking forward to hearing
these exciting tales.
We are both extremely proud of the progress students in
1C have made this year. It has been an absolute delight
to share 2016 with such a fantastic group of students.
Thank you to all of our wonderful parents for your
ongoing support and assistance. Fiona Clayton and Lyn

KP Kindergarten Penguins had a very enjoyable day at
Thalgarrah even though we did get a little WET! The
students learnt about the PAWS board: P = plants, A =
air, W = water and S = shelter. These are all the things
that animals need to survive. Matt, showed us Elsa the
lizard. It was very interesting to watch Elsa gobble up
watermelon, carrot and cockroaches. The students
played teddy bear tip and musical trees. They made a
colourful rainbow, went to a bush concert and had a whiff
party where they made bush perfume. There was great
excitement at the end of the day when Matt showed the
student a python snake. Many of the students were very
brave and patted the snake…….Mrs Porter where are
you? Is that you hiding under your pink jacket?
Last Wednesday all of Kindergarten had an exciting
excursion to the Fire Training Centre. Chris Ridley and
his team of fire fighters taught the students many fire
safety tips and the importance of having a fire escape
plan. Chris showed the students some of the tools on a
fire truck and then they climbed up into the cabin to have
a look at the inside. The highlight of the excursion was
when the fire fighters helped the students to squirt a
water hose until they knocked over a cone. Julliann

5W Can you believe it is already Week 6? The end of
term will be here before we know it! 5W students have
had an excellent first half of the term and are enjoying
learning about the discovery of gold in Australia. Students
were very surprised to find that gold is seven times
heavier than a rock the same size and it never rusts!
In our History lessons we weighed rocks and then using
the current gold prices found out how much they would
be worth if they were solid gold. Everyone agrees that
finding a small lump of gold would be a wonderful end of
year present! We are all hoping to strike it rich when we
go panning during our gold excursion to Uralla on
November 30.
Our English unit ‘Ned Kelly : Hero or Villain’ is proving to
be very popular and we are enjoying reading recounts
about the daring exploits of this infamous character. 5W
students would like to thank all parents and friends who
came to the assembly last week to watch our recital of
the poem ‘The Bushrangers’. We had a lot of fun
preparing for this item.
In Art lessons we have been learning about the amazing
art work of Vincent Van Gogh. Students have studied his
paintings and copied his techniques to create a mini Van
Gogh gallery in our classroom. Karen Watson
Notice to Parents

Cricket Report
The Ben Venue Cricket Team played their quarter final match of the PSSA
Knockout Competition last Thursday November 17 against Soldier’s Point P.S
at Harris Park in Armidale.
Soldier’s Point won the toss and sent Ben Venue in to bat first. Ben Venue lost
an early wicket however, James Marshall and Nick Jackson put their heads
down and built a great partnership with James scoring 25 and Nick scoring 36.
Other contributors with the bat were Maurice Kelly (11) and Malakai Griffiths
(17 not out). Ben Venue completed their 25 overs with a total of 6 for 132.
Soldier’s Point got off to a shaky start with Ryan Harris taking 3 wickets in his
first 2 overs putting the opposition immediately on the back foot. He received
good support from Ben Heagney (1-13), James Marshall (1-7) and Hayden
Schumacher (1-3). Ryan Harris finished his bowling session with the fantastic
figures of 4 for 9 off 4 overs. Ben Venue displayed and almost faultless fielding
display not missing many chances including two runouts from Dougal Payne
and Malakai Griffiths and a stumping by Nick Jackson. Ben Venue dismissed
Soldier’s Point for a total of 47 runs.
They will now play South West Rocks P.S this Thursday November 17 for a chance to play in the Finals in Maitland
in December. Well done boys!!! Richard Cotter
Forcing Stress to Retreat
Stress and pressure always retreat when kids practise behaviours in low or no-stress situations.
We shouldn’t add stress by insisting kids do everything right. Close enough is good enough, as long an effort is
made. It’s a mistake to wait until kids do things (make beds, play musical instruments) really well before we give them
any positive reinforcement.
There are generally two reasons why a child can’t do something. One is lack of skill and the other is lack of
confidence. So kids will only practise things where they feel confident of success- and they measure success by our
feedback.
So be encouraging, patient and affirming and rest assured that kids will acquire competence- and confidence- with
practice. Sue Shaw
