SHAPE OF A GIRL by Green Thumb Theatre

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2011 | 1:30 PMJohnny Carson TheaterFor middle and high school students, parents and teachers (limited availability)

Produced by Canada’s Green Thumb Theatre, this dynamic, one-woman play examines the frightening realities of teenage relationships, aggression and bullying.

Tenth grader Braidie and her friends have been victimizing a classmate since 2nd grade, but now Braidie is concerned that the bullying has gone too far.

UNL’s Dr. Susan Swearer leads a follow-up discussion at both the student matinee and evening performances. Swearer is a licensed psychologist and internationally-known expert and author on bullying. She discusses the implications of bullying, addresses issues raised in the performance, and presents resources for parents and/or teachers.

THE UGLY DUCKLING & THE TORTOISE AND THE HARE by CORBiAN Visual Arts and Dance

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2012 | 10:30 AMMain Stage TheaterFor Pre–K, 1st and 2nd grade students

Mother duck knew from the beginning that one baby was different . . . this egg was far too large and oddly shaped! Teased, chased and pushed aside from family and friends, Ugly Duckling ventures out on his own.

Through the seasons, and meeting new friends along the way, he searches for others who will love him for what he is . . . an Ugly Duckling?

CORBiAN’S creative luminescent wire puppets — a joyful spectacle full of whimsy and energy — animate these two classic tales of perseverance, personal transformation, acceptance and ultimately triumph. The glowing animation is fined-tuned for a pre-school/early childhood audience.

CURRICULUM CONNECTIONS: language arts; children’s literature; puppetry; theater; dance/movement; and science.

PARTIALLY SUPPORTED BY: Sarah Lahr for Sarah’s Kids

TINEES LOCOMOTION

by Kennedy Center Theater for Young Audiences – On Tour

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21, 2012 | 10:00 AM & 12:30 PMMain Stage TheaterFor students age 9 and up (grades 4–8)

Lonnie Collins Motion has so much kinetic energy that his nickname, Locomotion, is perfect. He’s seen a lot of sadness in his young life. But when he discovers a passion for writing poetry, Lonnie finally finds a way to express his feelings about his family, the fire that took his parents away, his little sister, and his world.

Award-winning novelist Jacqueline Woodson turned this Coretta Scott King Honor Book into an inspiring play about the journey of an eleven year-old African American boy as he moves from tragedy to hope, from silence to expression, and from losing one family to gaining a new one. Along with Lonnie, we all learn that something as simple as writing a poem can spark the journey of growing up.
