Summary of fiscal year 2012
Belvedere-Tiburon Library
Foundation
ANNUAL REPORT 2012
Letter from the President
What does it take to create a world-class library – one that provides the community it serves with a rich
collection of current and classic literature, up-to-the-minute technology, and a wealth of programs and
services that appeal to every age? The answer lies within the library itself and the extraordinarily
generous people who support it.
The Belvedere - Tiburon Library Foundation’s mission is to support the library through private
philanthropy and advocacy, and we do so by a variety of means. The past year has been our most
successful yet, thanks to the generosity of our donors and volunteers - your generosity. In this year
alone, we’ve raised $1,543,147 and made grants of $531,025 to the Library Agency. These grants enable
Library Director Deborah Mazzolini and her staff to continue to provide the excellent services, programs
and resources of the Library and to underwrite all the expenses related to building expansion planning.
Our annual community and fund-raising events like Blackie’s Hay Day continue to draw large and
enthusiastic crowds. Bookmarks, the amazing committee that organizes and manages this joyful event,
raises funds for our children’s and teen programs through their other wonderful ventures as well, the
Teddy Bear Tea and Holiday Wreath Auction. Our 23rd annual Petrocelli Luncheon was a sell
out again this year, with people clamoring for the best new books of the year. Corner Books, now in its
third year of operation, continues to be a fantastic community resource and steady financial contributor
to the Foundation and Library, supporting the acquisition of new books and materials.
Also this year, our Annual Appeal campaign was our most successful ever, with more than $108,000
raised, compared with $73,000 the previous year. Several exceptional individual gifts further solidified the
Foundation’s financial position, resulting in year-end assets of $4,670,976.
Last fall, the Tiburon Town Council voted its approval of the Library Expansion. To meet the ever-
increasing need for library services in our community, the Foundation has agreed to take on the
leadership role in raising the necessary funds to support the project. We are confident and enthusiastic.
We have taken important steps over the last few years to prepare for the challenge of the capital
campaign. We’ve restructured our board, instituted rigorous new financial policies and processes, re-
engineered our annual giving approach, conducted a philanthropy planning study, created new revenue
streams like Corner Books, expanded our volunteer base and partnered with the Library and Agency to
engage the community in planning for the expansion. We also hired our first Executive Director, Donna
Bero, who joins us after eight highly productive years at the helm of Friends of the San Francisco Public
Library. We’re thrilled that we have the expertise and skilled leadership necessary to conduct a
successful capital campaign.
It’s remarkable what a committed group of community volunteers and donors can accomplish. Thank
you again for your dedication and support. See you at the Library!

In every regard, the Belvedere-Tiburon Library had a banner year in 2012. In addition to ranking
highly among State libraries in numerous categories, it received record donations from the
Belvedere-Tiburon Library Foundation, grew its collections and online resources effectively, and
presented hundreds of popular programs and services to benefit the public. In addition, the Library
received approval to move forward with its proposed expansion, triggering the launch of a new
private funding effort.
Among California libraries, our Library ranks per capita:
4th for circulation
2nd for program attendance
8th for reference questions
13th for visits
13th for computer station use
With so much positive momentum, Library Director Deborah Mazzolini anticipates a lively and
productive year to come. When asked about future plans, she said, ―Our goals are ambitious, but
due to our excellent and knowledgeable staff, our dedicated volunteers, and our strong working
relationship with the Foundation, I’m confident that we will achieve them all,‖ Plans for the near
future include a new website with expanded ability to access information and reference materials as
well as new and innovative approaches to collections, programs and services. Thanks and
congratulations to everyone responsible for making the Library a great success story!
Meeting the Needs of the Community
With Library usage increasing dramatically over time, we’re thrilled that the plans to expand the
building are on pace to meet the growing need.
Did you know that:
Library circulation has increased nearly 400% over the years
Computer usage is among the highest per capita in California
The Library presented 811 programs, free and open to the public, last year alone, and is
second in the State for attendance!
Come into the Library any day and you will find the building filled to capacity with participants
making use of its many resources. Drop by in the morning to find people catching up on the latest
news, test-driving an e-reader or taking part in a foreign-language conversation group. Look into the
Children’s Room and see the wonderful programs being enjoyed by mothers with babies and
toddlers, pre-schoolers, and elementary school children. Any afternoon during the school year you
will find students and tutors concentrating on lessons. In plans for the expanded Library, children
will enjoy more room and new learning tools. And teens will have a special Study Zone with age-
appropriate technology.
Through careful conversations in the community and first-rate planning by industry experts, our
expanded Library is poised to meet the needs of patrons of all ages. We’re excited to be part of
this excellent public-private partnership and invite you to join us as our 21st century Library takes
form.
Financial Overview 10/1/11 to 9/30/12
Our year-end balance of $4,670,976
reflects an increase of more than 30%
over the previous year. The over-
whelming source of our revenue was
from individual contributions.
Fully 81% of our outlay in 2012 went to
direct support of the Library’s collec-
tions, programs and services, including
programs for children and teens, new
books and materials and services tai-
lored to the community’s needs.
Operational grants (collections, pro-
grams and services) have steadily grown
over the years, while new funding desig-
nated by donors for the expansion fully
covered the costs of its planning phase.

Our In-Kind
Donors
We express our gratitude to our generous in-kind donors, who make a gift of their time, talent and treasure. To those who provide financial expertise and graphic design, who offer lectures or programs, who lead discussions and forums, to those who donate the books and materials that fill Corner Books, and to the dedicated community members who volunteer their time - a heartfelt thank you!
Special Thanks
Revenue from the events produced by the Bookmarks and the Petrocelli Luncheon Committee came to more than $46,000. Proceeds directly support the Library’s programs and collections. At Corner Books, revenues raised from the sale of ‘gently used’ books donated by community members also came to over $46,000, benefiting the Library’s collections.
