BELTEI ESL Program

I. ESL Curriculum

- ESL Term: Six months long

- Divided into two Groups:

Group I: February-August, August-February

Group II: May-November, November-May

- Teaching Preschool-Level 12

Preschool 1-4 for kids

Level 1-6 for young learners

Level 7-12 for adult learners

ESL Program is a part of BELTEI Education.

ESL Curriculum

. Course Books are provided by McGrawHill Company.

. Preschool 1-4: Phonics (one teacher)

. Level 1-6: All of Us 1-6 (one teacher)

. Level 7-12: 4 Macro Skills, Grammar and Social Studies (one teacher teaches one skill)

- Qualified Cambodian teachers are carefully recruited.

*** Level 12 students in Group I, who failed the Final exam, would repeat their study three months again with Level 12 students in Group II.

- Level 6 graduates are awarded local certificate, issued by BELTEI Head Office.- Level 12 graduates are awarded two kinds of certificates:1. The Local certificate is issued by BELTEI Head Office.2. The International certificate TOEFL is given by ETS from USA or IELTS given by British Council, University of Cambridge from UK and IDP Australia.

English Speaking ContestEnglish Speaking Contest is created to measure ability of ESL students in English speaking of all Campuses, from level 3-12.

III. ESL SuccessLevel 12 graduates can participate in examination of Oukhna Ly ChhengScholarship to study in Singaporean, Malaysian, UK and USA universities.

IV. ESL Challenges

- Quality expatriate teachers difficult to recruit

- Too much run-toward bottom competition (reduced school fees to attract students)

- ICT-stimulated learning not yet a habit for learning and teaching

- Students do not have high motivation in reading for general knowledge poor performance in TOEFL & IELTS

- Growing number of students not compatible

with facilities

V. Future Direction

To challenge in the free market, BELTEI adds video program such as folktale, songs and social studies books covering the world information.

- To strengthen the existing infrastructure of BELTEI Group in all sectors, including ESL.

- To build soft skills by involving students in all social and community service activities.

- To contribute to the Human Resource development agenda of Cambodia through the strengthening of English competency among Cambodian young generation.

- BELTEI will expand its ESL education in the provinces and towns.
