CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME
Dear members and friends of the RAFA, Our AGM is coming up on 06th April and this is an important moment in every organization therefore I invite you all to join us on this occasion. Please find the agenda within this newsletter. An opportune moment for building our future on our glorious past; the RAFA Belgian branch and the Belgian Air Force celebrate their 70th birthday and the RAF its 99th. You are most welcome to join us for a friendly dinner at La Maison des Ailes, Brussels following the AGM. The invitation is enclosed. Following the Autumn European Area Conference in Malta 2016, I formally announced our desire to organize the 2018 AEAC in Brussels on 2-3 & 4th November. All delegates from European Area accepted my proposition. A number of events are in store for 2017 such as the 99 Not Out dinner and the award of excellence for a 350 ATC recruit (read below). I also wish to enhance our relation with the BAF, Comete line, RAFES and other escape lines associations. Unfortunately our Padre Walter PEETERS has passed away; he was an unconditional supporter of RAFA and will be greatly missed. I look forward meeting you at our AGM Kind regards Michel Mr. M. de Norman et d'Audenhove Chairman RAFA Branch Belgium
MEILLEURS VOEUX POUR 2107 FROM YOU NEW HONORARY PRESIDENT
Air Commodore John Maas CBE RAF
Dear Members of Royal Air Force Association
I thought I would take the opportunity of the first Newsletter of 2017 to introduce myself to the
Royal Air Force Association Membership in Belgium. Towards the end of last year, I was
approached by our Chairman Michel de Norman to see if I would be willing to take over as your
Honorary President from Air Marshal Sir Christopher Harper who has retired from the Service after
an august career, and in particular a good number of years here in Brussels. And with this note, I’d
like to publically thank him for all his support to our Branch and wish him the best in his retirement.
For my part, I am entering my 36th year of Service having joined at Royal Air Force College
Cranwell in 1980, and after flying tours on 101, 10 and 32 Squadron, interspersed with ground
tours in the Ministry, our Permanent Joint Headquarters at Northwood, and in the Gulf … along
with my wife Penelope, we have ended up on the Continent. First with a tour in Paris, as the
United Kingdom’s Defence Attaché, and now in Brussels working for the European External Action
Service – all in interesting times.

John and Penny
Having served on Squadrons and Stations with long and illustrious histories, I have always
recognised the importance of creating a link between today’s modern Air Force and that of our
predecessors. And for that reason I am a firm supporter of the work done by both the Royal Air
Forces Association and the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund. Here I also see the need for our
larger associations to look to support those organisations with a specific link to Airman in Europe
such as the Comet Line. My own experience of meeting some of the operatives, who supported
both the Royal Air Force Escape and Evaders and aircrew flying for the Special Operations
Executive, has been quite inspiring. With the numbers of veterans decreasing, as your President,
one of my goals is to ensure that Remembrance of sacrifice is honoured; not only on high days but
also in the communes of Belgium – and here too I have promised my support to the British
Embassy who often hears of initiatives direct from locally formed groups.
Another goal is to ensure that we continue to build on the links with our Belgian Air Force
colleagues and their veterans. The close ties forged during the Second World War between our
two respective Air Forces is something that I know our modern day Chiefs of Air Staff /
Components value. You only have to listen to the music of the Belgian Air Force Band and read
through the Squadron F540s to realise the extent of the integration of our Services during those
dark days.
A meet up between aviators of different generations Mr Frost (on the left) benefited from the services of the Comet Line and
Belgium’s very own Leon Rubin – Spitfire pilot and native of Grindelwald – hold a myriad of stories between them.
My last hope is to reach out to some of the younger groups in Brussels and with the help of Brigitte
Horton – a stalwart of our Committee – create a close link with the Royal Air Force Air Training
Corps by fostering a twinning between a Squadron and our Brussels Branch.
In closing, I’d like to thank all on the Committee of the Royal Air Force Association in Brussels for
the warmth of their welcome and to wish you all happiness and good luck for 2017.
Yours aye
John Maas

Inaugural Grimbergen Memorial Unveiling
On the 04 November the honour fell to me to represent the RAFA Belgian Branch in laying a
wreath at the unveiling of a monument to the 132 (Norwegian) Wing RAF at Grimbergen airport.
Representing a Spitfire wing, the 760kg steel structure anchored in a 1200kg Norwegian granite
block is an impressive and enduring memorial to the Norwegian pilots and crew whom served in
no. 66, 127, 331 and 332 (N) Squadrons of the 132 (N) Wing thus commemorating the important
contribution from the Norwegians to the liberation.
The unveiled monument and dignitaries
The History
Following the German invasion of Norway in 1940, the Norwegian government ceased fighting in
Norway and evacuated to the UK on 10 June. It funded the aircraft and running costs of two
Supermarine Spitfire Squadrons (331 and 332) which were almost entirely composed of exiled
Norwegian personnel. In addition Norwegian pilots and crew augmented no. 66 and 127 Sqns.
The main task of the 132 N) Wing was to provide air support to British, Canadian and American
ground troops advancing through Belgium to the Netherlands and Nazi Germany. During this time
the Wing was based at 7 different airfields as the war progressed, these were Villons-les-
Buissons, Campneuseville and Lille-Nord in France; Woensdrecht, Schijndel and Twente in the
Netherlands and Grimbergen in Belgium. Throughout the WWII campaign on the mainland 26
Norwegian and 1 Danish fighter pilot fell from the Norwegian Wing, including 6 from Grimbergen
airport between 6 Oct and 22 Dec 1944.
The Ceremony
On the 04 Nov, Norwegian veteran’s day, many guests gathered at Grimbergen airport to witness
the unveiling of the memorial. These included families of the fallen pilots and ground crew and
Grimbergen residents who housed these personnel. Also present were Norwegian and Belgian
generals and VIP’s comprising the Norwegian State Secretary Øystein Bø, Norwegian

Ambassador to Belgium Ingrid Schulerud, Jens Stoltenberg the Secretary General of NATO, Knut
Hauge, the Ambassador to the Norwegian military mission NATO, General Brigadier Arild
Heiestad (Norwegian Air Force) and Major General pilot Frederick Vansina (Commander of the
Belgian Air Component.)
The inauguration of the monument followed speeches from the Norwegian Secretary of state,
General Brigadier Arild Heiestad (Norwegian Air Force) and Carl Stousland, Belgian Scramble
representative. The Grimbergen Phoenix orchestra played the Norwegian and Belgian national
anthem and we were graced with a fly past from a Spitfire Mk IX of the Royal Dutch Air Force
Historical Flight. The moving ceremony ended with the Belgian Red Devils flying a Missing Man
Formation in four Marchetti SF260 aircraft. After, a vintage military vehicle collection was on
display and then guests were received by Mayor Marleen Mertens, at the Grimbergen town hall
and viewed a rare three minute film of Norwegian squadrons in Grimbergen from the Norwegian
MoD archives.

JAKARTA
Far Forgotten Fields: where the Wing Commander rests with his air and ground crews.
For some of our Association readers the memories of the Second World War and then the difficult
years of transition from the pre-war Colonial period that followed are very real. On a recent
mission to Indonesia I had the opportunity to call in on the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery
in the Centre of Jakarta with Mr Charles Michel Geurts, Deputy Head of Mission for the European
Union in the region and a real buff on the history of the Belgian Air Force.
Charles Michel signs the book of memory on behalf of the European Union
The cemetery is a haven of tranquillity amongst the bustle of modern Indonesia, perfectly
manicured with the graves of many of the RAF officers – up to the rank of Wing Commander who
died in the defence of Jakarta.
The RAF graves of air and ground crews rest side by side as they would have done on the Station.
In the adjacent site there is the Netherland Field; again an exceptionally well kept site where the
graves of many Dutch citizens are registered from the transition period – starkly crosses bearing
the names of include many women and children killed by insurgents on outlying Islands strike a
very different feel to the neighbouring CWG site of military men. The harsh reality of war though
meant that in both sites most were young.

Netherlands Field of Honour - most graves are from the period 1943 - 1949
During our visit Charles Michel and I were able to pay tribute not only to the brave men and
women buried but also to thank the gardener responsible for keeping the Cemeteries in such a
proper and beautiful state.

For those who might like to know more about this period I attach a small excerpt from the CMWG
history page:
Jakarta, the capital of the Republic of Indonesia, lies on the north-west coast of the island of Java.
It was the administrative capital of the former Netherlands East Indies and was known as Batavia,
the name used in the records of the 1939-1945 War.
Batavia was the port by which thousands of British and Commonwealth servicemen entered Java
in February 1942 from Singapore and Sumatra, shortly before the Japanese invasion of the island.
It was defended by Nos. 232 and 605 (Fighter) Squadrons from Tjililitan airfield, a few miles
distant. Although greatly outnumbered and dwindling in strength, the fighters remained in action in
8
http://www.rafabelgianbranch.com
defence of the capital from 17th-27th February. The 77th Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment was also
employed in Batavia's defence.
On 25th February H.M.S. Exeter, Electra, Encounter and Jupiter and H.M.A.S Perth sailed from
Batavia to join the Eastern Striking Force at Sourabaya before meeting the Japanese in the Battle
of the Java Sea. On 1st March the Japanese landed near Batavia, by the 4th the Dutch had
ordered its evacuation, and on the 5th the Japanese occupied the town. Most of the Allied
prisoners of war captured in Java were later concentrated in a number of prison camps around
Batavia, one of the largest being "Bicycle Camp", so named because it had been the barracks of a
Dutch cycle battalion. The camp held among its first prisoners 300 survivors of H.M.A.S. Perth,
and 250 soldiers of the 2/15th Punjab Regiment who had fought in Borneo.
In 1961 at the request of the Indonesian Government, the Commonwealth dead from the
Netherlands Field of Honour at Sourabaya, and from those at Palembang, Medan and Muntok in
Sumatra, were brought into the cemetery, which already contained 474 Commonwealth war
graves. Additional land was acquired to accommodate all the graves, and the total number of
burials was increased to over 1,000. Jakarta War Cemetery therefore contains the graves of many
who died in defence of Java and Sumatra during the swift Japanese advance in 1942 and many
others who perished afterwards as prisoners of war. Among the dead were sailors who fought in
the Battle of the Java Sea, soldiers of "Blackforce" including a number of Australians whose
graves lie together in plot 6, and airmen who died in the flying battle and airfield defence.

Passing of the Royal Air Forces Association Chaplain Walter Peeters
It is with great sadness that we report to our Association the passing of our Padre, Walter Peeters,
on the 8th January 2017. He was a most kind, and generous servant of God. Teacher, pastor,
sailor, linguist, engineer and friend, Walter was a great contributor to life and we in RAFA Belgium
will miss his support to our Branch.
His funeral service was held on Saturday 14th January at Notre Dame de Joie Church in
Anderlecht. A most moving affair in a packed Church where many of Walter's friends, students
and parishioners paid their tributes in French, English and of course his beloved Flemish…
Michel de Norman, our current Chairman, supported by a number of members of the Committee,
and President attended on behalf of the Royal Air Forces Association with the ranks reinforced by
former Branch Chairman and current Honorary Vice President Dick Wittingham who flew in from
the United Kingdom.

The Horton Award for Excellence
Dear Association Members it is with great pleasure that I can inform you of a new link for our
Branch with the next generation of aviation minded young men and women – Royal Air Force 350
(Carshalton and Wallington) Squadron Air Training Corps. Thanks to the very generous initiative
of our long serving committee member Brigitte, of course the wife of our much missed former
colleague and Chairman Barry, the award of the Horton Trophy for a cadet who has demonstrated
excellence will be made for the first time on the 1st October 2017 at the 350 Squadron Annual
Formal Inspection.
The Horton Award for Excellence
The Officer in Charge of 350 Squadron Air Training Corps has written to say how absolutely
delighted he is to accept the offer of a trophy to acknowledge a cadet in their excellence and has
invited Brigitte to make the formal presentation of the award in person.
In choosing 350 Squadron Air Training Corps we are of course cementing the rapport with
Belgium first generated during the Second World War with Belgian's flying under the Royal Air
Force mantle. Indeed, the Cadet unit's badge mirrors the crest of 350 Squadron Belgian Air
Component depicting Ambiorix, leader of the Eburones Tribe the symbol chosen by Belgian pilots
to mark the very Belgian nature of their outfit. We look forward to forging good links between our
Branch and this Cadet unit and again thank Brigitte for her generosity.

The Horton Golf Tournament
About 15 years ago, Wg Cdr Barry Horton, who was the then Rafa Chairman, Belgian Branch,
decided to contact the Duisburg Military Golf club to organise a golf competition to raise money for
Rafa.
The Horton Trophy
Duisburg Golf Club very kindly accepted. When Barry passed away in 2004, the competition
continued and was given the Barry Horton Tournament name.
A close friend of Barry, Wg Cdr Terry Maddern, offered the Trophy.
The competition is a nine-hole shot gun, which starts on a Friday afternoon, at the end of June.
12
http://www.rafabelgianbranch.com
It is followed by a BBQ that we organise ourselves and has become a very popular event, even
with the enthusiastic Duisburg members, especially the tombola, as you can see in the photos.
Tombola Prizes
Unfortunately, it will not take place this year, and we sincerely hope to renew this event next year.

99 NOT OUT - RAF/RAFA Dinner Maison des Ailes 6th April
Dear Colleagues, Association Members
It is with great pleasure that I can now confirm that we are able to move forward and hold a
dinner of aviation friendship to mark the 99th Anniversary of the Royal Air Force and 70th
Anniversary of the RAFA Belgium Branch.
To mark this occasion, with the kind support of the RAFA Belgium Committee and serving
colleagues in the European External Action Service, and NATO, we propose to hold a
Dinner Night in the La Maison des Ailes, 1 Rue Montoyer, Brussels 1000 on Thursday the
6th April 2017 which we hope will be formally informal. For those of you who don’t know
the venue it is a private club first opened in the 1930's to allow aviators and their friends to
meet. It's very much art deco in feel and reminiscent of the Mess at RAF Northolt right
down to the minstrels' gallery. The Club has offered the following menu at 50 euros per
head including wine pour mettre l'eau a vos bouches:
Les scampis à l'orange.
Carré d'agneau, chicons, haricots verts, sauce au porto.
Mille feuilles Tiramisu
Coffee:
The dinner is open to those serving in or out of uniform here in Belgium, members of
RAFA, sister organisations and their spouses. There will be an RAF flavour to the
evening…with our best habits to the fore, as we prepare to turn 100 next year when surely
they will become traditions.
Should you wish to attend please could you contact John Foreman
([email protected]) with your name, and those of your guests, plus indicating
if you have any special dietary needs. At the same time make a payment transfer to RAFA
Account BE58 0014 20611779 noting “99 Not Out – and your name”
