GympieRegional Gallery

Being involvedVolunteers are an extremely important part of the Gallery structure and perform duties in areas such as offi ce administration, customer service at the front desk and exhibition installation. By being a volunteer, you can share or upgrade your skills.

Friends of the Gympie Regional Gallery are an active group who assist with many Gallery functions including exhibition openings and fundraising events. Financial members also receive discounts on workshops, Gallery Shop purchases and at participating local businesses.

School and community groups are encouraged to arrange a tour of this heritage listed School of Arts Building.

Workshops for adults and children are offered on a regular basis with various adult groups meeting weekly. For creative children, Art Stars meet on the fi rst Saturday of the month and Tiny Tots Artplay meet on the last Friday of the month (both excluding school holidays). A full program of Holiday Fun is available during each school holiday period.

Buy direct from local artisans at the Suitcase Markets held in March, July and November. The latest information on events can be found on our website or our Facebook page.

31 May – 25 JuneThe Good, the Bad and the NOT so UglyHugo Du Rietz Gallery

Regional clay artist Sam Keane presents an exhibition of non-functional and functional work, featuring dramatic and colourful forms, with a sense of cheekiness and fun. The theme incorporates her interpretation of the title, ‘the present, the past and the future’.

An acknowledgement and celebration of a group of talented Wide Bay and Burnett artists brought together in the late 1980’s by the late Aunty Olga Miller for an Aboriginal art history workshop. Focusing on the group’s current work, the exhibition reunites them after 25 years of walking their own paths. Includes work by photographer and fi lmmaker Luke Barrowcliffe, who is a next generation artist from the group.

28 June – 9 JulyLANDscapeHugo Du Rietz Gallery

A Gympie Regional Gallery curated exhibition using the tradition of Landscape as a springboard for creativity.

Local artists will dig up the past and re-explore our region in the Annual Gympie Regional Council Heritage Art Competition, held in conjunction with the Gympie Rural Show. Taking on the theme as set by the National Trust of Queensland for 2016 of Discoveries and Rediscoveries.

5 January – 20 FebruaryOffshoots: A Florilegium from Cairns Botanic GardensThe Gympie Times Exhibition Space and Hugo Du Rietz Gallery

A vibrant exhibition of contemporary botanical illustrations by Cairns artist Julie McEnerny that documents the extraordinary plant collection of the Cairns Botanic Gardens. This touring exhibition features exquisite drawings, etchings, paintings and mixed media works created by the artist during a series of fi ve residencies at Tanks Art Centre. A travelling exhibition developed by Tanks Arts Centre in partnership with Cairns Botanic Gardens, toured by Museums and Galleries Queensland. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Ministry for the Arts’ Visions of Australia program.

2 – 20 FebruarySTORIES IN SMALL SPACES: the power of the miniatureGallery 3

Small personal statements from Studio West End artists in a format up to 10 x 10 x 10cm on subjects as diverse as industrial, personal, political, environmental or personal choice. Includes a diverse range of materials and techniques such as painting, collage using two or three-dimensions in clay, soapstone, plaster carving, found objects, latex, wire, books or boxes. Curated by Adele Outteridge and Wim de Vos.

23 February – 19 MarchLamentationGallery 3

This sensitive exhibition by Karike Ashworth addresses the often uncomfortable subject of illness and death. Drawing from her personal experience of living through her mother’s illness, Karike has created an installation that is both enlightening and confronting.

22 March – 16 AprilMythscapes in the Watery RealmsGallery 3

This international project was borne out of the experience of extreme weather events resulting in catastrophic fl oods suffered by residents of South East Queensland and Wales in the period from the Queensland “inland Tsunami” in 2011 to the Welsh fl oods in 2013. A collaborative print exchange between participating members of Griffi th University Staff and Alumni and Aberystwyth University.

23 February – 2 AprilBendigo Bank Andrew Fisher Portrait PrizeThe Gympie Times Exhibition Space and Hugo Du Rietz Gallery

A competition in the manner of the Archibald Prize featuring distinguished Queensland subjects. An initiative of the Friends of the Gympie Regional Gallery Tuesday Art Group.

An exhibition based on symbolism from American history, expressed in a contemporary context, from a personal Australian view by Jo Williams.

7 April – 28 MayINDO POP: Indonesian Art from APT7The Gympie Times Exhibition Space and Hugo Du Rietz Gallery

Indo Pop: Indonesian Art from APT7’ presents a group of artists who were a central feature of the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art’s fl agship 2012 exhibition, ‘The 7th Asia Pacifi c Triennial of Contemporary Art’. These works join the state’s pioneering collection of contemporary Indonesian art, and builds on the strong relationship we maintain with one of our closest neighbours.‘Indo Pop: Indonesian Art from APT7’ is a touring exhibition developed by the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art.

31 May – 9 JulyTattersall’s Club Landscape Art PrizeThe Gympie Times Exhibition Space

To celebrate its 150th anniversary and mark 25 years of the Landscape Art Prize, the Tattersall’s Club Committee has made available a selection of 15 winning entries to tour regional Queensland. It represents a diverse range of art styles in landscape painting including traditional, contemporary, narrative, industrial and urban by highly regarded Australian Landscape artists. Curated by Bernie Hollett. Tattersall’s Club Landscape Art Prize is organised by the Tattersall’s Club, Brisbane, and toured by Museums and Galleries Queensland. This project is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.
