The last druid lives in the mountains, near a forest. He has got a little cabin near an old tree. This tree is as old as the last druid. In the afternoon, he likes to sit down under it and the children of the town visit him. They sit around the old tree and the druid tells them many stories about halloween.“The summer is ending, my children”, says the druid. “We have to finish the harvest quickly.”“Why?” the children ask“I am telling you”, the druid explains.”If there is grain in the fields, Cailleach comes and takes all the grain away”.“Who is Cailleach?” asks a little girl.“She is a witch, she is the worst witch ever!” says the druid.

“Tell us, tell us, please!” chant the children.“I am telling you, be patient!”, smiles the druid. “Ghosts and spirits appear. They are as bad as Cailleach. They like to play tricks on people. The druids use their magic to stop their tricks.”“Do they play tricks on people?” ask the children.“Yes! They can break everything in our houses. We make big fires to frighten them.” Explains the druid.“The Celts are afraid of Shamhain. Shamhain laughs at the big fires, so the druids offer him animals.” “What do they do with the animals?” asks the little girl.“They burn them in the big fires” explains the druid. “Do you understand?”“Of course, we do” explains the little girl. “I am afraid of Shamhain! I don’t like him!”

“Tell us more!” say the children. “I am telling you!” laughs the druid. “The problem is that the spirits are very bad and they get angry if we don’t give them things.”“And what do you give them?” ask the children.“Let me guess!” says the little girl… “sweets! You give them sweets!”“That’s right, they love them! And we wear horrible costumes, too! They are as horrible as the ghosts and spirits. When they see our costumes they are afraid and fly away.”
