ADJUSTMENT

Adjustment is the the behavioural process by which humans maintain an equilibrium among or between their various needs and the obstacles of their environments.

People strive to be comfortable in their surroundings and to have their psychological needs (such as love or affirmation) met through the social networks they inhabit.

TIPS TO ADJUST IN A NEW SURROUNDING

Page 5: Behavioural science

Learn as much as you can about your new environment in advance.

Decide what three qualities you want to be known for.

Be polite to everyone.

On the first day, if no one invites you to lunch, ask someone for tips on where to eat.

Listen for opportunities to connect and then share relevant information about yourself.

During the first few weeks, take nothing personally.

If someone makes a remark that you find too insensitive to ignore, speak up.

Try to speak at the same volume as those in your new environment.

If the transition involves a move to a new city, state, or country, get out and explore.

NEGATIVE ENVIRONMENT

Page 8: Behavioural science

If there’s one thing that unites us all, it’s that we all suffer. We all triumph. We face obstacles in our lives and encounter things that throw us off our course and challenge our inner strength.

That’s life, with the lesson often seen in retrospect. Without the difficult times, there would be no great times. Everything would just seem flat and uneventful, plain and boring.

There would be no impactful change without struggle. The beauty of life is overcoming what we think we cannot. Our self-esteem grows and we find strength in ourselves that we never knew existed.

TIPS TO STAY POSITIVE IN A NEGATIVE

ENVIRONMENT

Page 12: Behavioural science

Never respond when you are not calm. If you are not sure that you are calm, don’t respond. Take time to calm yourself down first.

Take a deep breath as a first step to calm yourself down.

Speak in gentle tone to reduce the tension of the situation.

Look at the content of what people say to you for something positive that you can act upon to improve yourself.

For the rest of the messages which is negative, simply ignore it.

Maintain positive view of the people. Maybe you don’t like their messages or behaviour, but that doesn’t mean that you can hate them personally.

If you make mistakes, be open to admit it.

Talk to a positive friend who can encourage you.
