Hello and welcome to Nottingham Medical School.Welcome to the best five years of your life. My name is Tom Fish and I will be your MedSoc President for the next academic year.

Firstly, huge congratulations on getting an offer and meeting the grades. UKCAT is now only a bad dream, personal statements are forgotten and the nerve-wracking interview need never trouble you again. My one reassurance is that you won’t regret choosing Nottingham.MedSoc is a mini students’ union just for you! Tailored for medical students we provide you with everything you could possibly need to support and supplement your university life. Flick through this book to see what we have in store for you this year.It falls to me to give you a message to kick-start your university life. Having gone through this exact journey, and I remember reading this 2 years ago, all I can say is get involved. Just because you’re doing medicine doesn’t mean you can’t live your university life to the full. Work hard, play hard is a medical student’s cliche, but in reality it is very true.

So join a sports team, go to that pub crawl, volunteer for a society and make the most of your time here. Most importantly have fun. You have so much to look forward to this freshers term and I would happily trade places with any of you to do it all again. (Any offers??)

Enjoy the rest of your summerI look forward to meeting you all in SeptemberTom

THE COMMITTEENottingham MedSoc is an all-inclusive student run union, designed to support medics in every year make the most of their time at university. Whether it be providing tutoring and extra support for students who are struggling academically, or putting on the best socials the university has to offer (Medic’s Cocktail Party is coming!!), MedSoc is here to support you.

TOM FISH - PRESIDENT

BETH HUBBERSTEY - VICE PRESIDENT

Keen only just covers how one can describe Fish, getting his foot in the door of MedSoc as soon as he joined Nottingham, he has already been first and second year rep. Being a slight BNIM (Big Name in Medicine) - or so he likes to think, it was a pretty natural move for Fish to become President. It’s down to his friends, however, to make sure his head stays an acceptable size, but what can you expect from a boy who seems good at everything! Never failing to whip out the charm, Fish’ll have you at his beck and call in no time. Not only is Fish a key part of MedSoc, he also has an important role in the charity Phab Nottingham, organising loads of fun filled events for children with disabilities. All this alongside playing medics football, Fish is starting to sound a bit like a saint... And unfortunately for us it’s true to say Fish is a smiley, all round, heart of gold guy who really will make the next year go swimmingly.

Beth is one of the most likeable people you’ll ever meet, coming from the jolly land of Liverpool; she’ll be your best friend within minutes. As Vice President Beth is pulling all the strings behind the scenes, as for her actual role, who knows what she really gets up to?! Most importantly she keeps the big Fish in line and makes sure he isn’t getting to big for his already enormous boots! With her beaming smile or a witty joke she will always cheer up your day no matter how glum you’re feeling. Beth enjoys volunteering for Teddy Bear Hospital, one of the many societies MedSoc has to offer, and last summer she managed the staggering feat of cycling from London all the way to Paris raising money for Breast Cancer Research. If you see her around the med school or in the legendary Ocean make sure you say hello and get to know this friendly face!

Page 5: Bedpans & Dipsticks

FRAZER COWGILL - TREASUREREveryone breathed a sign of relief when this happy chap stepped up to the role of treasurer. Frazer is friendly, organised and always willing to lend a helping hand, making him an excellent activities coordinator for Teddy Bear Hospital. Managing to combine his effortless smooth talking with his love for all things indie, Frazer has his own radio show on URN, showcasing the hottest, newest music!Equally at home on the football pitch, he is also the president of the medic’s football team (having previously been treasurer he was aptly nicknamed ‘sugar daddy’!!) Ever the gentleman, he still manages to shock and impress every Friday when he tears up the Ocean dance floor with his infamous ‘flailing’ moves. His enthusiasm and experience make him perfect for the role; armed with his beloved cafetiere, there’s no one else we’d trust with the finances of MedSoc.

HANNAH DODD - GENERAL SECRETARYBeing one of the most organised and enthusiastic medics, Hannah is perfect for the role as gen sec, and will be sure to keep the committee up to date and on their toes. As last year’s week one rep, Hannah is used to looking after freshers whether that’s around the med school, or whilst dancing the night away in her second home Ocean, she can always be found with a friendly smile and is constantly willing to lend a hand! Full of energy, and loads of fun, there is no doubt that this dog-loving girl from Bristol will help keep MedSoc running smoothly both day and night!

ROSIE VAN OSS - LOGISTICS OFFICERIntroducing Rosie, the talented, hilarious and ‘master of all trades’ Logistics Officer of this years MedSoc. Often found sporting her amazing goalie outfit leading UoN’s hockey team to victory, Rosie also boasts a love of the arts, and is a well-established member of the university theatre group. One laid back, down to earth girl, Rosie’s keen medic nature is unrivalled by many; there is not an Ocean to be missed, an event to be unattended or a friend not to be made. And if this isn’t enough, her brilliant sense of humour will ensure the coming year is full of pun-derful moments not to be missed! Am I right? I 100% know so...

Page 6: Bedpans & Dipsticks

SARAH COULTER-BROPHY - PUBLICITY & COMMUNICATIONS OFFICERMeet Sarah, the brunette beauty behind all the MedSoc propaganda. Her e-mail skills, which have been honed since birth, are matched only by those of Bill Gates, making her perfect for the role of making sure everyone knows exactly where and when anything important is happening. Although as Nottingham’s answer to Mary Berry, she would probably be more suited for the role of Cake Officer. Whether it’s partying the night away in Ocean, or an evening of classy cocktails in Coco Tang, Sarah is always ready to have fun. Armed with her ever-ready smile and arsenal of friends, she is the perfect person for the role of publicity and communications.

CHARLOTTE MORRIS - WELFARE OFFICERCharlotte ‘Mauriiiceee’ Morris is the new friendliest face in MedSoc. With welfare in her heart she’ll be there all year round to provide support for everyone studying medicine... Providing she can stop falling asleep that is! Voted MedSoc’s official comfiest shoulder to lean on, Charlotte’s roles include the provision of guides for landmark points in each year, running the various welfare schemes and creating the renowned exam welfare packs. Luckily her close friendship with the treasurer means that despite the horrific Freddo price increase they will be returning this year. This horse-loving girl will look after us all and is a sure bet to win you all over with her smile. Always free for a chat (whether in the QMC, on a night out or in McDonalds!) be sure to say hello... Although don’t confuse her with her ‘twin’ Sarah who you can be sure will never be far away. Watch out for this fun and bubbly Huddersfield lass in Ocean, because, as the films show, Maurice loves to ‘move it move it’.

EMILY WONG - ENTS REPEmily Wong is in charge of Ents this year, meaning the medic balls are NOT to be missed! One of last year’s Karni reps, Wong is far too good at giving the med school exactly what it needs to blow off some steam. Like any good Ents Rep, you’ll find her in the BIG O if not away with the amazing Mission Zambia. A Thai boxing queen, do not get on her bad side. You have been warned. Otherwise one of the loveliest people you will meet, come and say hi at freshers fair!

Page 7: Bedpans & Dipsticks

CLAIRE MULVENNA - SOCIETIES OFFICERSay hello to Claire, our resident keen bean! When it comes to medic societies, this girl definitely knows a thing or two; after all she’s been involved in most of them! From volunteering with children in Teddy Bear Hospital, becoming the next Serena Williams in Medics Tennis to contorting through the air and teeming with enthusiasm in Medics Cheerleading, not only is Claire one of the most active people in the med school, she has also proved time and time again that she is a medic to her core. Taking the words “work hard, play harder” literally, Claire has pretty much been on every social that MedSoc have ever put on and can been found somewhere between the glorious carpets of Ocean, LT1 and the dance floor of Itchy Feet proving to everyone that, when it comes to getting involved in Nottingham Medical School, Claire is the best guide you could ask for!

CAM MACKELLAR - SPORTS SECRETARYFitness fanatic and basketball bonzo Cam couldn’t be a better choice to make your sporting wishes come true. To find Cam one would either have to look in the well documented BIG O, or in the gym where he is often teaching the President, Tom Fish the perfect technique for a squat thrust! Don’t be fooled by his devilish good looks and gentleman charm, this fun loving fella is as comfortable in full drag as he is in his scrubs, and I am pretty sure that if he could he would spend his entire life in his birthday suit!!

ALEX BEVERIDGE - SOCIAL SECRETARYGet ready for a year of fantastic socials with Alex Beveridge at the helm. This gym-going rugby-loving lad knows how to party but don’t worry ladies, as a fully qualified ‘one of the girls’ he’s able to cater for everyone. Not a huge fan of clubbing? Alex has got you covered with many new (and perhaps a little unusual) ideas for great nights - including a cheese and wine evening! Although his love of fine dining isn’t quite matched by his rather cheeky sense of humour, Alex knows how to keep it classy and will make sure that this year is going to be a big hit. Besides, how can you go wrong when your social sec is called ‘Beverage’?!

Page 8: Bedpans & Dipsticks

CHARLOTTE SMITH - SOCIAL SECRETARYFrom Charlotte’s very first post on the fresher’s group it was clear she was going to be a keen medic. By her 50th post it was clear she was going to be the keenest medic ever. In two years she has without a doubt lived up to that title. Whether she’s organising the cheerleading socials, having her top(s) nicked in Ocean, or just sitting around reminding everyone of a slow loris, Charlotte is the definition of a great medic. Socials could not be in safer hands. More energetic than a horde of hyper seven year olds, more fun than a pair of narwhals dancing the rhumba, and with more sass than you could shake a stick at, this girl will without a doubt deliver the best socials Nottingham has ever seen.

YEAR REPSROB CULLUM - FIFTH YEAR REPNow into his third year on the MedSoc committee, Rob isn’t known as Grandad MedSoc for nothing! This ever-dependable MedSoc legend is loved by all who know him. As the resident elder, he has (supposedly) swapped snoozing in lectures for saving lives in hospitals, but last year’s Medics Musical producer has more talents than medical wonders up his sleeve. His dance moves are somewhat infamous, and if you don’t believe us, pop along to Ocean one Friday and see for yourselves! Enthusiastic, always willing to help and the secret King of Organisation, Rob is the go-to guy for queries, questions or worries of any kind (and he also gives great hugs!)

GEM DRACUP - FOURTH YEAR REPOne year simply wasn’t enough for self-confessed baking addict Gem. Having spent the last 12 months putting her all into being the omniscient guru of all things Welfare, she has now turned her attention to representing her year group. When she isn’t busy baking cakes for half the students in the library (seriously - ask her housemates!) she is busy producing musicals. Gem is always there with a listening ear and is a fantastic person to not only represent her year group but to go to for general advice - if she doesn’t know the answer she can point you in the right direction (but to be honest it’s probably not worth knowing).

Page 9: Bedpans & Dipsticks

FIRST YEAR REP - COULD BE YOU??

JOANNA LUMB - THIRD YEAR REPJoanna has been a welcome face to the fresher’s this year, providing them with helpful anatomy revision sessions. Never one to pass up on a good science joke, Jo loves all things medicine related, from working as a student ambassador for medicine at Nottingham, to writing an insightful blog about the inner workings of uni life. No challenge is too big and she is also climbing Mount Kilimanjaro this summer. Belonging to not only uni women’s rugby but also women’s football, this fierce sportswoman is a friendly helping hand to lead the third years through their projects into clinical placements.

CALLUM KENNEDY - SECOND YEAR REPQMC’s Big Friendly Giant, Callum is most often surrounded by friends grinning from ear to ear. After returning from his ‘gap yah’ to study his medicine his next claim to fame is as King of Korfball, 1st team, a sport nobody really understands but him! He is easily picked out of a sea (or should I say Ocean) of older years on one of his many ‘mingling’ wanders, where he towers above every other normal sized person in Ocean. If you don’t know Callum already you soon will (and the first thing he will probably tell you about is his gap year!), be sure to say hello, as Callum is truly one of the most sociable, friendly guys you will ever meet.

BECCA HUMPHREYS - SECOND YEAR REPBecca will be a face you will see a lot at the beginning of the year as not only is she second year rep she is your week one rep too. It’s not uncommon to hear Becca before you see her, somewhere between Crisis, Ocean, the library or Raleigh Park. Becca is so passionate about medicine she owns her own skeleton, but she does have other interests such as kayaking, rock climbing, drama and cycling to name a few. She’s quite the traveller having been to South America, Europe and volunteered in Zambia. A fun, outgoing and well known member of the year, Becca will be an asset to MedSoc and a great second year rep.

WEEK ONE REPSYour first week (Week 1) is amazing. Being a Medic is amazing. Stick both together and it’s brilliant! Keep your eyes peeled for us; we’ll be easy to spot outside LT1 in the QMC!Come and introduce yourselves and have a chat. As Week One Reps it’s our job to get to know you and look after you, making sure you have the best time possible for your Fresher’s week!

There’s so much going on in your first week make sure you get involved as much as you can and we’ll be there every morning to pick up the pieces! Week one is merely a warm up for an amazing medic year - Medic’s Cocktail Party, Meet Your Boss, Bedpush etc. So get ready!!Your reps this year are Becca and David.

MEDIC PARENTSWhen you first arrive at Nottingham you’ll probably have a lot of questions, ranging from the very important (Where’s the best night out? How compulsory are lectures?) to the more mundane (Can I wear pyjamas to seminars? How on earth does this timetable work?). Well with a mere heartbeat you will be provided with someone who can answer all your questions in the form of a lovely second year - your medic Mum or Dad. They’re not your typical parent though; they’ll help you out with lecture notes, exam advice, introduce you to your medic Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles and various other obscure new relatives and generally make sure you get the most out of your first year. Then before you know it you’ll be in second year, no longer the youngest in the family and ready to bring up a medic child of your own! Use and abuse your new parents, they’re here to help.

MEDICS KARNIHello and welcome to Medics Karni!

Karnival is the largest student-run charity organisation in the UK, hosting events mainly for freshers and raising money for a huge number of charities. We will host several events

throughout your first term, making it as action-packed, stress free and, most of all, memorable as possible. From balls to bar crawls, rag raids to sky dives and even climbing Mount

Kilimanjaro, there’s something for everyone to get involved with. But what is a ‘rag raid’? Whilst at other universities Saturdays may be seen as time to catch up on sleep or recover from the night before, at Nottingham they mean only one thing - rag raid

time. Every Saturday of your first term, we will journey to the big cities around the UK, wearing in all manner of fancy dress. After a day of doing good, collecting money for charity, you will be well rewarded for your hard work - and what’s a better reward than a bus journey

home complete with challenges, prizes and a few other surprises! These bus journeys are definitely not to be missed! On our return to our beloved city the party carries on at one of our

favourite venues well into the night.Last year Karnival raised over 1.7 million pounds for charity and we hope to do just as well -

if not better - this year!

SAM HUNTERSam is a rugby-loving lad with a heart of pure gold beneath his manly exterior and steely expression. A strong presence at Crisis each week Sam combines a winning sense of humour and a collection of smooth moves with his sharp mind to make him a fantastic person to hang out with. This rag loving Karni King is never seen out of some form of university stash and is hard to miss in a crowd, so look out for him in the ‘Medic’s Corner’ of Ocean where he can be seen most Fridays enjoying Baywatch and having his trademark ‘fun with friends’.

SARAH TOWEYA pint-sized bundle of fun, Sarah is probably the loudest person on the team and not afraid to make her presence known. Give her a drink and she only gets louder, turning into the life of any party and a well known ‘liability’ in Ocean, her brummie accent can even be heard by her neighbours through the walls. Her legendary ability to sleep through anything, no matter how loud, is probably the reason for her tendency to skip lectures - and miss all sorts of events from rag raids to days out. Buy her an alarm clock and she’ll be your friend forever, but Sarah’s caring side is just as well known: whether it’s looking after people or devotion to a good cause, she is always there with an eager smile or pep talk!

Page 13: Bedpans & Dipsticks

SAI SATHANAPALLYSai is never to be missed in a crowd and will have you chanting the night away on our rag raid bus. He’s always a friendly face around the med school during the day and is sure to be found dancing in ‘Medic’s Corner’ of Crisis and Ocean, or occasionally performing at local gigs with his guitar. He has a love of all things rag-related and is sure to make Medic’s Karni as exciting and fun-filled as ever. Even with his ‘less than average’ collections each week, his faultless dedication to rag raids (dressed in his lion onesie) is admirable and he is sure to make them the best they can possibly be for you!

KIM STALLARDThere’s nothing Kim likes more than a night out in Ocean, despite not quite making it to our first social as a team... She also enjoys a good sing song, be it an anti-Rutland chant on a rag raid bus, or hitting window-shattering notes only dogs can hear in the medic choir. She has a connection to every charity on the face of the Earth so if you want to make a donation look no further. She also travelled all over the world during her gap year, however evidently didn’t get a jab against TB, a story she will more than happily tell you. This gluten-free diva will be helping all you freshers settle in, especially those in Ancaster having been voted Week One Rep.

HENRY MCKAYDon’t let this unusually quiet Essex boy’s chilled demeanour fool you - whether it’s throwing his signature shapes on the dance floor or showing off his amazing pineapple hair-do in the Big O, Henry is always up for anything! His dedication to Karni is unquestionable and no matter how crazy the night before was, he’s never missed a rag raid and somehow still manages to out-collect us all - freshers take note of his mad collecting skills! Henry will definitely make rag raids unmissable!

CARA VALENTEA Jaeger bomb wielding, fun loving Cheltenham girl, Cara is never far away from the Ocean dance floor. The only thing to rival her undying love of a good night out is her devotion to rag raids and all things Karni, so she is bound to make freshers year one to remember! Cara is always available for a chat about anything and everything, and this classy gal is a great laugh - plus she speaks Norwegian, what more could you ask for? Don’t forget to come and say hi to her at the Freshers Fair for Karni news or just for a good talk!

SPORTSMedics are always over-achievers in all aspects of life, including sport. Unfortunately, due to our ‘fun’ packed timetable, our elite sportsmen and women always struggle to find time to

play for the university teams meaning our MedSoc teams are always of a very high standard. MedSoc sports teams participate in the national (NAMS) league and university (IMS) league and training fits in with our jam-packed lifestyles. As well as playing in the leagues, a varsity

series has been set up with the Leicester medics, which we are hoping to expand this year. The sports that MedSoc has to offer include: Badminton, Basketball, Cheerleading, Cricket,

Cross Country, Cycling, Football (men’s & women’s), Golf, Hockey, Netball, Rowing, Rugby, Squash and Tennis.

If we don’t have already have your sport, feel free to come and speak to us and we can see what we can do!

Although we can get quite serious on the pitch, we all know how to have a great time off it. We have many team socials throughout the year and are aiming to have even bigger, better

socials this year. The highlight of every year is alumni; a day of student verses doctor matches, followed by a huge social in the evening, usually combining many of our teams.

This is not a night to be missed!

Medics Cheerleading is a fun, sociable and relaxed society that meets for a couple of hours a week. We learn several routines of dancing and lifts throughout the year, do two performances and enjoy regular socials. No previous experience is required and we love getting new members. It’s a great opportunity to meet medics in your and other year groups. The main focus of the society is on socialising, fun and enjoyment. We guarantee that if you come along to one of our sessions you will have a great time and meet some lovely people!

Medics Basketball is a society that welcomes players of all abilities, whether you played regularly for your school team, or you’re a beginner, come along to our training sessions on a Wednesday evening. Training usually consists casual practice matches against each other, and for the more serious players we participate in the IMS league every Sunday during term time, and NAMS twice a year.

BASKETBALL

CHEERLEADING

Page 15: Bedpans & Dipsticks

Tennis is a popular sport among medics, with over 100 members of varying abilities, we offer weekly sessions to help improve and build confidence in our players so that they take part in fixtures - a great way to meet new people. SO, INSPIRED BY WIMBLEDON? Take inspiration one step further and join our Medics Tennis club. You are guaranteed to have a good time!

Nottingham University Medics Netball Club (NUMNC) is a very friendly and social club. We train on Monday evenings and welcome players of all abilities with a consistently high intake of freshers. NUMNC enter teams into NAMS and IMS leagues, both played on weekends. We have been hugely successful in both tournaments particularly within the last couple of years, winning IMS and reaching NAMS finals last season. As well as having great teams and fun training sessions, we have plenty of socials, which are not to be missed! Feel free to come along to try it out! Our lovely committee can’t wait to meet you!

Nottingham Medics RUFC is a friendly, welcoming club, which has enjoyed a number of recent tournament successes on the field, coupled with a strong social feel off it. There is a great history at the club, a history you are welcome to be part of. We train at Casuals RUFC on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm. We are always on the lookout for more players and anyone interested should contact us.

Nottingham University Medics Football Club (NUMFC to our friends) is the greatest club in the world. We have three teams of all abilities, comprising both students and doctors, who play on the weekends as well as training every Wednesday. Every year we take part in the NAMS tournament which features medical schools from all over the country and NUMFC have won it twice in the last four years. In the autumn term there is a students against doctors game followed by a big night out. The club’s tour takes place every December to a location that is not disclosed until you get to the airport (previous tours have included Madrid and Milan). So for anyone who loves socials, chants, club ties or just playing football, we have only one rule: Adepto Adigo (get involved).

SOCIETIES BAR CRAWLThe medics come out in full force representing their chosen medical society, fancy dress compulsory, getting lost in town trying to find the bars, incredibly likely, but a great night to see what the other societies are like, with a bit of competition thrown in too!

BOAT PARTYThis is not your average river cruise! Enjoy bangers and mash with an unlimited free bar as you appreciate the view of the River Trent! Exclusive for freshers and second years, a great opportunity to blow off some steam and see Nottingham by boat! A classy evening with a messy end at Crisis.

STUDENT VOICEGot an issue with the course that you

want to raise?Know of something that needs

changing?Want better facilities or other services to

be provided?Student Voice is an elected committee of medical students from all years. We are part of the Student Union’s Education Network and our reps sit on over a dozen of different faculty committees. We ensure that your feedback is being listened to and acted upon. We bring issues to the attention of the medical school, ranging from suggestions on improving the facilities through to feedback about the course itself.Elections for new course reps will be taking place in the first few weeks of term so keep an eye out for these and come and say hello at Freshers Fair! For more information about Student Voice or if there is something you would like to see changed, email: [email protected].
