PROTECT OUR TREESTheCityofBelmonthasthelowestpercentageoftreecanopyofanyWesternAustralianmetropolitanlocalgovernmentandhasmadeacommitmenttoincreasetheamountoftreecanopythroughtheimplementationofanUrbanForestStrategy.
AkeyelementofthisistheretentionandnurturingofexistingtreesinthestreetscapesandtheCity’spublicareassuchasparksandroadreserves.
UnderstandingwhenandwhytreepruningisrequiredisvitalforthehealthoftheCity’strees.Incorrectpruningofbranchesmayactuallymakeatreelesssafe,increasetheriskofdiseaseanddecayorevenkillthetree.
TheCity’streesareprunedtodefinedarboriculturalspecificationsinordertomanageriskandprovideclearancefromroads,footpathsandoverheadservices.
UnfortunatelynotallresidentsvaluetheCity’streesasacommunityasset.
ArecentincreaseintreevandalismthiswinterhaspromptedtheCity’sParksandEnvironmentDepartmenttoagainremindallresidentsthatitisanoffencetoprune,damageorremovetree(s)locatedonCouncilpropertywithoutwrittenapprovalfromtheCity.
Interferingwithastreettreerisksafineof$5,000andadailypenaltyof$500.
