beacon hose blaze - november 2014

From the Chief’s Desk By: Chief James Trzaski  Greetings to all as we enter November, the month of transition into the starkness of winter but also, the month of Thanksgiving. Thank you to everyone fo r your time and commitme nt as we highlighted fire prevention activities. I'm always impressed by our members who sacrifice time away from their jobs and families to deliver the important message of safety. November will be a month of preparation and readiness for the change of seasons. As we enter our 116 year of existence, Bea con Hose Company has evolved to be a many faceted organization. Beacon Hose Company has always adapted and accepted the challenges set before us. Our organization provide s many services to Beacon Fal ls, far beyond our emergency responses. That being said, I've come to believe that, although we are one organization, we have two distinct subcategories. Beacon Hose Company has the emergency response branch which provides exceptional EMS , F ire and Rescue skills. We also have the organizational branch that provides benevolent and charitable contributions to our members and the public . Ideally a member would be able to devote their knowledge, skills and abilities to both branches of our organization, but this has become a challenge. The United States Fire Administration conducted a study of recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters. Although I have the answers to their findings,  I am now asking our members to answer the question..." Reasons why people no l onger volunteer or why their participation has decreased”? Please take the time to send me your short answers either by e-mail at Beaconjim@sbcg lobal.net or drop a note on the Chief's desk. The intent of gathering this information is to devise a plan to make volu nteer opportunities more doa ble. Perhaps if we identify some reasons for lack of participation, we can adjust and make the volunteer experience more appealing. Have you checked out our updated website? Thank you to Kyle Brennan for his time and talents. The website has an “Active Members Only” section, our intent is to keep accurate, timely information and a calendar of events. We have started to receive feedback from our "Customer Survey Forms". The forms are sent to everyone we have contacted through an EMS or Fire response. The feedback from the surveys has been very positive, and we have had a few with questions on how we operate. I'm very happy with the response from the forms, this allows us an opportunity to explain how and why we do things, and to identify any areas of improvement. Please check the website calendar for training and activities scheduled for November, there are several chances to get involved. I wish everyone a Healthy and Happy Thanksgiving  Jim

Fire Calls = 15

EMS Calls = 50

Ebola TrainingDuring our October EMS Training/Meeting we discussed and reviewed the

possibility of treating and transporting potential Ebola patients. Waterbury

Hospital’s Trauma Director Barbara Zarrella, BHC EMS Director Joe Chew and

Assistant EMS Director Ken George have been keeping us up to date on the newest

protocols and procedures. As new information becomes available, we will be

keeping all of our members apprised via email.

All newly released information will also be posted throughout the Firehouse.

Here comes the COLD!!!!EMS Members: Remember to keep yourselves and your patients warm and dry this winter.

EMS Cold Weather Tips~For Your Patients~

Turn the patient compartment heater on HIGH in route to all calls. On scene remember to keep theambulance doors closed to retain heat. Keep a towel at the top of the stretcher ~ Use it to cover your patient’s

head to help reduce heat loss. Extra blankets have been stocked in the ambulances forcases of multiple patients.

**Pulse Ox Alert** ~ Cold fingers do not give accurate readings. Look for physical signs of cyanosis andpalpate a radial pulse for rate and regularity.

~For You ~Dress for success!! Wear appropriate outerwear and footwear for the weather you will be working in.

Extra EMS jackets and jumpsuits are stocked in both ambulances. Remember ~ You are the most importantperson on emergency calls. You must take care of yourself before successfully taking care of your patient.Refresh your memory!! Take the time to review how to engage the 4 Wheel-Drive in both ambulances.Fill Er’ Up!! Please remember to keep the ambulances’ fuel levels above 3/4 of a tank. Keep a towel at the

foot of the stretcher ~ Use it to cover the patient’s feet if they are wet or muddy. The towel will help to protectyour clothes from being soiled as you lift the stretcher.

*BRUSH UP ON YOUR HYPOTHERIC EMERGENCY SKILLS*

“A patient with injuries, chronic illnesses, or other conditions will show the effects ofcold weather much sooner than a healthy person”

How are we doing????In mid-September, we began our BHC Customer Service Survey mailing. Every EMS

patient received a questionnaire and many have been returned with greatresponses. In November we will also be sending surveys out to residents that have received fire department

responses. Please be sure to note the residents name and add it on your fire reports.WE THANK YOU FOR REPRESENTING OUR DEPARTMENT WITH PROFESSIONALISM AND COMPASSION!!

KEEP UP THE WONDERFUL WORK!!
