Redrow, Wales’ largest home builder, recently adopted LATCH as one of its corporate charities and promised to use its skills and experience to help refurbish the LATCH family accommodation suite at the Children’s Hospital for Wales. To kick start the ’Home from Home’ project, Redrow challenged its Graduate Train-ees to give the 2 lounges, a bedroom and the LATCH Boardroom a makeover in just three days from 15—17 April 2013! The results are amazing—the newly redecorated and refurbished rooms really have the WOW factor. The Graduate Team excelled themselves

EMYR’S KARAVAN 4 THE KIDZ!

Thank you to all those who voted for us in the John Lewis Community Matters charity scheme.

We have received £1,100 and we will be spending this on new household items for our accommoda-tion unit, including a new kettle, curtains, bedding and kitchen items which will enhance the refur-bished accommodation.

Emyr’s Karavan 4 the Kidz welcomed its first family recently

In February 2012, Paul Downes and Christian Evans approached the Emyr Owen Branch of LATCH about the possibility of fundraising to purchase a caravan for the use of children with cancer and their families. LATCH jumped at the proposal and with the commitment of Paul, Christian, friends, family and the local community, the fundraising be-gan in earnest to purchase a caravan in Park-dean, Porthcawl. An 80’s night, a Bike Ride challenge and a performance of Calendar Girls by PAODS were some of the events held. Emyr’s Karavan 4 the Kidz welcomed its first family on 23 March 2013 for a week long stay in Porthcawl. Since that date, the caravan has been fully booked. LATCH would like to thank Parkdean for all their help and advice and Deckrite who provided the ramp and decking at no cost. LATCH hope that Emyr’s Karavan 4 the Kidz will be used and valued by many families for years to come.

PATIENT SATISFACTION SURVEY LATCH is currently reviewing the support and services that we provide to the children and families and we have sent out a Patient Satisfaction survey to patients who are on treat-ment currently. We would be grateful if this survey could be completed and returned as your views are extremely important in helping us ensure we are doing everything we can to support the families through their child’s treatment. Families of children who have complet-ed treatment are welcome to complete the survey and can obtain a copy of the question-naire from the LATCH office.

LATCH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

At the AGM, Mrs Ingrid Nutt, a LATCH Trustee for 8 years an-nounced that she was stepping down. Ingrid has been involved with LATCH for over 30 years year and was the Chairman of the 30th Anniversary Fundraising Committee. Ingrid’s daughter, Nicola was diagnosed with leukaemia in 1980 and during her treatment, Ingrid stayed in a convert-ed hospital stationery cupboard. Ingrid knew that things had to change for families and has worked tirelessly ever since to ensure that her experi-ences were not repeated. During her time as a LATCH Trustee, Ingrid has seen the facilities improve dramatical-ly. When the charity moved from Llandough Hospital to the Children’s Hospital she knew it was paramount that accommodation be provided so that the families could stay near their children.

LATCH raised the money through the ‘Raise the Roof’ appeal. LATCH would like to take this op-portunity to thank Ingrid and her husband, Carl for all their hard work and efforts in fundraising and promoting LATCH over the past 30 years. A floral bouquet was presented to Ingrid at the An-nual General Meeting.

The LATCH Annual General Meeting was held on Friday 10 May at Henstaff Court Business Centre in Groesfaen. The AGM was extremely well attended this year with 40 members turning out and it was nice to welcome many new members. A number of highly informative presenta-tions were made during the evening includ-ing a report on the Unit by Dr Heidi Traunecker, an update on the Late Effects Service by Sister Debbie Dodd, a presenta-tion made by Dan Burrows on behalf of the LATCH Social Workers and a presentation on the impact of Social Media by Claire Lillie.

We would like to thank those who contrib-uted to the AGM and Graham Paul Ac-countants who do a remarkable job in au-diting our Annual Accounts. The Trustees were delighted to report that LATCH’s fi-nancial position remains buoyant and thanked the Treasurer for his careful moni-toring of the income and expenditure. We would also like to thank Laurence and Debbie at Henstaff Court who again did a wonderful job looking after LATCH and providing such a beautiful buffet.

The Orchard Golf Society held a Golf Day for LATCH in honour and memory of their dear friend Reg King, who was a great supporter of LATCH. The Society raised

an incredible £6,250 on what was their 17th annual charity golf day

The Administrative Staff from Swansea College of Arts and Humanities organized a raffle and raised £136.00

The LATCH “Buy a Brick” campaign continues to go from

strength to strength to raise funds to maintain the

parents’ accommodation.

Each brick costs £10.00 and will be engraved with a name of your choice.

The bricks appear in this uniquely commissioned artwork which is dis-

played at the entrance to the parents’ accommodation in the Children’s

Hospital for Wales.

Parents frequently refer to their expe-

rience of having a child on treatment

as like “being on a roller coaster”.

Our Artist, Kate Derbyshire originally

captured this image and created a

spectacular mosaic and tile art display

of a rollercoaster. The mirrored tiles

around the top of the display and the

blue tiles underneath are engraved

with the names. Due to the success of

the campaign, LATCH then commis-

sioned Kate to design another art

piece in keeping with the same style. She came up with a magnificent helter

skelter that now sits on the wall opposite.

Emyr Owen Branch

The Emyr Owen Branch held its 4th

Emyr’s Orange Ball on Saturday 11 May

and as in previous years had a fantastic

evening. The theme for the evening was

Rainforest and we would like to thank the

Grand Pavilion Porthcawl for their support

in setting up the room.

The 220 guests were entertained by acts

including Alex Thomas, a highly talented

vocalist and guitarist and by the Dave

Barry Band who never fail to impress.

spoke passionately about

his younger brother and

the impact of losing him.

It was wonderful to see

J a m e s a n d L a u r a

Clatworthy and their

parents. James spoke of

the time that he and Emyr

spent together on Sky Ward. After

hearing these moving speeches from

these 2 young men, the guests gave

generously in both the main and silent

auction.

The Branch is delighted that Emyr’s Kara-

van 4 the Kidz has proved to be so popular.

It is fully booked until the middle of Septem-

ber with bookings already being taken for

LATCH has launched a new film that en-capsulates how the charity supports chil-dren with cancer and their families. The film follows a day in the life of Morgan and his mum and shows how LATCH has helped to make life easier for them during his treatment.

LATCH was nominated by the Sains-bury’s Local in Barry to receive the fund-ing from Sainsbury’s national initiative which funds charities to tell their “Untold Stories” through film in partnership with the Media Trust. The film has been re-cently shown on the Media Trust’s na-tional television channel, and the Com-munity Channel.

Would you like to become more in-volved and represent LATCH in your local community? We are looking to recruit a team of enthusiastic volun-teers across Wales to become LATCH Community Ambassadors and help us spread the word about the great work that LATCH does to support children with cancer and their families in their local community. The role includes representing LATCH at local events, accepting cheque presentations, delivering presentations to local groups and managing and dis-tributing publicity material and collec-tion boxes. Meet Phil Parker – LATCH Community Ambassador for Cardiff Phil Parker has been involved with LATCH for 30 years. It all started when he was asked to put up a poster at work advertising the charity’s launch event. Touched by the poster and the ethos of the charity, he persuaded his manager to donate some toys to the charity and the rest is history! Phil explains “Over the years I have helped out in all sorts of ways. As a keen golfer I have used my connec-tions to persuade local golf clubs to adopt LATCH as their charity of the year.

I usually give a short presentation about the work of LATCH, help out at fundrais-ing events (usually golf days!) and then turn up on behalf of LATCH for the cheque presentation. I also organise an annual duck race in my local village and encourage local gardeners to showcase their garden on behalf of LATCH during Cardiff in Bloom. “The amount of time I give to LATCH fluctuates from month to month – you can give as much time as you want to and there are no set expectations. I get great pride and satisfaction from what I do especially when I know that the ma-jority of the money raised goes directly to the children and their families.”

Christina Lazarou from Lazarou Brothers recently organized held a Charity Dinner at the Marriott Hotel. The dinner was very well supported by local businesses throughout Cardiff, especially Toyota World. Real Radio’s Jagger and Woody were the comperes for the evening and there was a very special live perfor-mance from Sophie Evans. Everyone had a marvelous evening and an incredi-

ble £14,434 was raised for LATCH. We would like to thank everyone who made the dinner such a success.

Andreas Lazarou had set the fundrais-ing ball rolling when he decided to un-dertake the London2Brighton Chal-lenge over the May Bank Holiday Weekend. The London2Brighton Challenge is a 100km run organised by Action Chal-lenge and this year saw 1,751 partici-pate in what must be the ultimate en-durance race. 1,349 completed the challenge The fastest person to complete the

challenge did so in 10hrs 19mins The slowest person completed the

race in 36hrs 11mins Andreas completed the race 16hrs

22mins There were 2 proposals of marriage

during the challenge and both ac-cepted!

Andreas raised over £635 to add to the total raised from the dinner raising an

LATCH ANNUAL GOLF DAY

The LATCH Annual Charity Golf Day was held at Peterstone Lakes Golf Club on Friday 14 June which again proved to be very successful. 26 teams entered the event and we

raised just over £3,000. We would like to thank Phil Parker for all his help and assistance in organising the event and Paul Byett of UHY Peacheys for spon-soring the Halfway House.

Congratulation to our Auditors, Graham Paul & Co who came third this year. They have entered a team for the past 18 years and this is the first time they have been in the top three. It just goes to show if at first you don’t suc-ceed…..!

registered with on-line auction site ebay to enable

anyone selling items on ebay to donate a percent-

age or all of the proceeds to LATCH!

Firstly you will have to register with ebay yourself—or find someone who is already

registered and is willing to help. Along with your friends and family, sort out your

summer clothes that are surplus to requirement and post them on ebay (you could

even make an evening of it). Just choose LATCH as the charity you would like to

support and the percentage you want to donate and away you go! Quality brands

sell really well, especially designer labels and brands such as White Stuff, Boden,

Joules, Fat Face, Next etc. It is great fun when the bids start to come in—especially

near the end of the auction! All funds raised will be sent directly to LATCH via Pay-

Pal.

day 6 October 2013.

Last year’s race was a fabulous success for the City of Cardiff

and with the same route planned for this year’s race, the organ-

We are delighted to announce that we have been chosen as the Charity for the 2013/14 Radyr and Morganstown Festival. Each year the village holds a two week May Festival organized by the Radyr and Morganstown Association. The aim is to bring the community together in a social environment and also raise funds for their nominated charity. We look forward to working with the R&M Association over the next 10 months culminating in the fort-nightly Festival in May 2014.
