Written by Lila on day 3. We are the group Midnight Flyer, with Holly, Betsy, Michelle, Rob C, John A and

me. On our site, we’re working on flooring, plumbing and painting. Today we sanded down the walls and

got started on painting. We also gently removed the kitchen flooring and the bathroom tiling. After a

hearty lunch of PB&J and bananas (which I didn’t peel correctly apparently) we hung out with our family

and got to know them better. We had fun singing country music courtesy of Michelle’s iPhone. We still

have to finish the painting, finish gently removing the flooring of the bathroom, and finish flooring in the

kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. It’ll be a busy week!

___________________________________________________________________________

Initially we had been informed that our teams main job would be flooring. However when we arrived at the

ASP center we were told that we would be painting the first day. Throughout that day, we painted the ceil-

ing, repainted the entire room, sanded the framing around the window and door, and painted those as well.

We also took measurements of the room we would be flooring the next day. Overall the group worked effi-

ciently and kept a positive attitude throughout the day. My Crew is Paul G, Billy G, Juliana, Scott D, Matt S,

and Billy F.

“Me and my homeowner Misty sitting on her porch. This is a place we both came throughout the workday to

talk together and create a friendship. I believe it encompasses the Spirit of ASP because the most meaningful

part of the trip is meeting and developing a relationship with my homeowner. Thank you for giving me a mis-

sion trip like no other "

Andy Gugel

Some of you may have noticed the hand-some young man who began singing in our choir a number of months ago. If you are a long-time member of the church, surely you know Andy Gugel who grew up in BBPC. Andy is a very busy young man at present, but he sat still for a quick inter-view after church one recent Sunday.

Andy grew up in Piscataway, an only child. He graduated from Piscataway High School in 2013. Though his dad was a Navy man, Andy’s love of planes and aviation drew him to the Air Force. He enlisted and began basic training in October 2013. He made an eight-year commitment which in-cluded four years of active duty (completed) and four years of “inactive ready reserve” (three years to go). That means, if there is ever an emer-

gency, Andy is among the first to be called.

Andy’s active duty was spent largely at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton Roads, VA, where he was trained to be an F-22 Raptor crew chief. In layman’s terms, Andy was the chief mechanic on a fighter jet. In fact, Andy’s name was on the 150 million dollar jet for which he was responsible. Though re-sponsible for that jet, Andy worked on other fighter jets as well. When he entered the Air Force, Andy’s contract as “open mechanical” meant that he could be the mechanic for anything ranging from ICBMs to fighter jets to trucks. Andy found his time in the Air Force to be “very rewarding. I saw a lot and did a lot.” Andy explained that much could go wrong in connection with a fighter jet launch. He was responsi-ble to prevent such launch-related mishaps. Once in the air, the pilot was responsible to keep the jet there.

Of interest was the air support Andy provided to both Presidents Obama and Trump. When either would leave Washington D.C., Andy would lead the mechanical support to the two fighter jets that hovered in the sky above the location of the President to handle any emergency that might arise. Also, as part of his active duty, Andy traveled. He did temporary duty in Utah, Nevada and Alabama. At Nellis Air Force Base in the desert of Las Vegas, Andy participated in “red flag” exercises which were war games simu-lating wartime situations. Andy also was deployed for seven months to Jordan (in a undisclosed loca-tion) where he supported Operation Inherent Resolve which was the military operation that took back Mosul from ISIS. Andy reported on aircraft status involved in the operation “up the chain of command.”

Though tempted by the potential of retirement after twenty years in the Air Force, Andy returned to ci-vilian life after four years of active duty and has now completed the first semester of his sophomore year at Columbia University’s School of General Studies where he has been studying neuroscience and behavior as a pre-med student. More lately, however, Andy’s interest has shifted to finance with the goal of becoming either a finance broker or a management consultant. He is on target to graduate in four years. This summer Andy is deep into chemistry and the associated lab. Not that he really has free time, but somehow Andy nevertheless volunteers weekly in the neuro ICU at New York Presbyterian, having already banked 100 hours of work involving duties ranging from stocking cabinets to talking with patients.

Andy fondly remembers his early years at BBPC as a four or five year old participating in “Mommy and Me.” He always loved the music program, singing in the children’s choir, ringing hand bells and eventu-ally singing in the adult choir. He also remembers three or four years doing ASP.

Andy has a serious girl friend. He met Gabrielle Garcia in his junior year in high school in none other than chemistry class. Need we say more? Gabrielle graduated from Kean University this past spring and works in NYC for Strategic Financial Solutions, a debt consolidation company, as a litigation support representative. Gabrielle too knows and sometime attends BBPC.

In his free time, Andy enjoys working out in the gym of the apartment complex in Iselin where he lives.

Andy, thank you for your service to our country! We are glad you are safely home, enjoying college and happily singing in our wonderful choir.
