our bread and butter all season long going through our duals and I give each one of those guys a chance to go in and wrestle a good match, keep things close and pull off the upset.” Yankton’s other eight wrestlers will have a chance today (Friday) to make it to state as the top 4 wrestlers at region will go on to Aberdeen. Hage said the wrestlers on the team wrestling for third and fourth will be just as important as the wrestlers going in the finals. “Those guys who were on the back side of the bracket were wrestling hard tonight,” he said. “A lot of points in a tournament are scored on the backside and you are wrestling for your life on the backside.” Just like Yankton, Vermillion has six wrestlers in the regions finals — TJ North (112), Lance Burkhart (135), Tanner Mart (160), Chris Mart (171), Nick Mart (189) and Gerrit Heine (215). Even with the same amount of wrestlers in the finals as Yankton, Delvaux said one of ways Vermillion lost points was because of the num- ber of byes the team had. “What hurt us is we had three wrestlers who basically byed their way into the semifinals, so that’s two rounds that they didn’t have to score points,” he said. “Those are high ranked kids, so not hav- ing them wrestle and scoring points hurt us, but at the same time, we won those matches in the semifinals.” Delvaux said the team still has a lot to do going into the final day. “I think our day could’ve gone better and now we have a couple big rounds coming up,” he said. “We have a couple kids who are new and young. We are going to go home and get some rest, come back and score some points.” Following Yankton and Vermillion is Sioux Falls Lincoln with 99 points, who have a slight lead over Sioux Falls Washington (92). Harrisburg is close behind the Warriors with 88 points and West Central is right behind the Tigers with 83 points. Brandon Valley leads Lennox for seventh with 47 points to 41 and Tea Area is in ninth with 39.50 points. Wrestling will resume today (Friday) in Brandon Valley’s gym at 6 p.m. Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan Friday, February 19, 2010 PAGE 8A www.yankton.net SCOREBOARD Winter Olympic MEDALS TABLE Nation G S B Tot United States 6 5 7 18 Germany 4 4 3 11 Norway 3 3 2 8 Canada 3 3 1 7 France 2 1 4 7 South Korea 3 2 0 5 Austria 1 2 2 5 Switzerland 3 0 1 4 China 2 1 1 4 Russia 1 2 1 4 Italy 0 1 3 4 Sweden 2 0 1 3 Netherlands 1 1 1 3 Japan 0 1 2 3 Australia 1 1 0 2 Slovakia 1 1 0 2 Czech Republic 1 0 1 2 Poland 0 2 0 2 Belarus 0 1 1 2 Estonia 0 1 0 1 Finland 0 1 0 1 Kazakhstan 0 1 0 1 Latvia 0 1 0 1 Croatia 0 0 1 1 Slovenia 0 0 1 1 Prep Hoops THURSDAY’S S.D. The class will include 11 newcomers from Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, South Dakota, and North Dakota. Among the class is Vermillion High School standout Lydia Gille. A resident of Elk Point, Gille is a two-year starter for the Tanagers. She has played for numerous teams, including playing up in age brackets to get more time on the field. Gille also received the Sportsmanship Award by her peers. Viterbo University is located in La Crosse, Wis. USD Asst. Football Coach Strop Named D-Coordinator At UMD DULUTH, Minn. — University of South Dakota assistant foot- ball coach Todd Strop has been hired as the defensive coordinator at NCAA Division II Minnesota-Duluth, UMD announced Thursday. Strop, 41, spent two seasons at USD where he served as spe- cial teams coordinator, linebackers and secondary coach. He joined the Coyotes staff in 2008, the program’s first at the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level. He will join a UMD program coming off two consecutive Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) titles, a combined 26-2 record in the last two seasons, and a D-II national champi- onship in 2008. Prior to coming to USD, Strop served as defensive coordinator and later head coach at NCAA Division III Wisconsin-Stout. His resume also includes stops at Durand (Wis.) High School, Ohio University and Wisconsin-Platteville. Strop will officially begin his duties at Minnesota-Duluth next Monday. Bon Homme Booster Club Hoops Tourney March 14 TYNDALL — The Bon Homme Boys’ Basketball Booster Club Tournament will be held on Sunday, March 14, in Tyndall. The tournament, open to boys in grades 4-6, features a three- game guarantee based on a full eight-team bracket. There will also be a hot shot shooting contest. The deadline for entry is Monday, March 1. All information can be found online at mp026.k12.sd.us, or by e-mailing Mick Patzlaff at [email protected] or by calling 605-589-3648. “We’re encouraging them to put a few extra skills they’ve been working on in their routines,” he said. “If they hit them, they may earn a place. If they don’t, they still made it to state.” Freshman Katie Kotschegarow, eighth grader Ashton Haak and seventh grader Lindsay Larson will compete in the team competition only. Mitchell’s Amelia Rew, who won all four events and the all- around last year, graduated. Watertown’s Caitlin Mack is the early favorite to claim the titles in a number of events, posting the top region scores in the all-around (38.225), beam (9.65), vault (9.65) and floor (9.675). Teammate Krisia Bramer holds the top region score on the bars (9.55). Class A With squads that boast just one senior between them, the Wagner Red Raiders and Vermillion Tanagers will use this weekend’s Class A Championships as a learning tool to build for the future. Vermillion scored just 111.695 at state a year ago. Its Region 2A score this season was over 10 points higher, at 121.875, but the Tanagers come in seeded ninth. “I wish our score was more, but I’m pleased with where we are at,” said Vermillion head coach Mark Upward. “We’re still going in ranked ninth, but it’s not like we’re 10, 15 points behind.” In fact, Vermillion could gain several more points just by sticking their routines. “We lost three and a half points at regions because of falls,” Upward noted. “Add those in, and we’re hoping to be in the mix for sixth or seventh.” Wagner comes in seeded eighth after a team score of 126.925. Deuel comes in as the top seed with a 142.15, threatening to end Madison’s run of 15 consecutive state Class A champi- onships. “I think the more exciting thing this year may be the Deuel-Madison duel,” Upward said. “This may be the first time a team has seriously challenged them since the first couple years of their run.” Madison’s 15 straight state titles is a nation- al record. Wagner has qualified five all-arounders for Saturday’s individual competition: Juniors Jessica Koupal and Elizabeth Donelan, freshmen Kylee Lightenberg and Sydney Breen, and sev- enth grader Hannah Flemming. Sophomore Miranda Weber is also qualified, competing in the vault. Vermillion will compete three gymnasts on Saturday, including juniors Elly Melby and Amber Walker in the all-around. Freshman Jade Fostvedt will compete on the balance beam. Freshman Sam Wiekamp of Deuel was the individual champion in vault, balance beam, floor exercise, as well as the all-around champion last year at the State Meet, She will return to defend her titles this year, as will eighth grader Shannon Winthers of Madison, who was champion on the uneven bars last year. Competition for Class A will begin each day at 9:15 a.m. GET IT ALL ON YOUR MIDCONTINENT CHANNEL. Football? Basketball? STATE From Page 7A Gille Thomas followed later with a three-pointer, and the two teams would trade leads the rest of the first half. USD got four straight points from Gentry to close the half, taking a 22-19 lead into intermission. Then came the second half, when the teams found the shooting a little easier. Krogman added 15 points off the bench, while Kendall Cutler and Thomas each scored eight points. Cain and Smith rounded out the Coyote scorers with two points apiece. As was the case in the first meeting between the two teams — Jan. 21 in Orem, Utah — USD struggled from the free throw line. In the loss to Utah Valley a month ago, the Coyotes were just 14-of-30 at the chari- ty stripe. In Thursday’s win over the Wolverines, USD was 14- of-24. “Free throws almost got us again, but Jake those few right at the end,” Boots said. “It shouldn’t have gotten to that point.” Like USD, Utah Valley had to overcome a quiet night from its leading scorer, reserve Swarbrick. The senior guard, averaging 13 points a game, scoring six on Thursday. Kevin Woods was the only Wolverine in double fig- ures, with 11 points. our bread and butter all seasonlong going through our duals and Igive each one of those guys achance to go in and wrestle a goodmatch, keep things close and pulloff the upset.”

Yankton’s other eight wrestlerswill have a chance today (Friday)to make it to state as the top 4wrestlers at region will go on toAberdeen.

Hage said the wrestlers on theteam wrestling for third and fourthwill be just as important as thewrestlers going in the finals.

“Those guys who were on theback side of the bracket werewrestling hard tonight,” he said. “A

lot of points in a tournament arescored on the backside and youare wrestling for your life on thebackside.”

Just like Yankton, Vermillionhas six wrestlers in the regionsfinals — TJ North (112), LanceBurkhart (135), Tanner Mart (160),Chris Mart (171), Nick Mart (189)and Gerrit Heine (215).

Even with the same amount ofwrestlers in the finals as Yankton,Delvaux said one of ways Vermillionlost points was because of the num-ber of byes the team had.

“What hurt us is we had threewrestlers who basically byed theirway into the semifinals, so that’stwo rounds that they didn’t haveto score points,” he said. “Thoseare high ranked kids, so not hav-ing them wrestle and scoringpoints hurt us, but at the sametime, we won those matches in thesemifinals.”

Delvaux said the team still hasa lot to do going into the final day.

“I think our day could’ve gonebetter and now we have a couplebig rounds coming up,” he said.“We have a couple kids who arenew and young. We are going to gohome and get some rest, comeback and score some points.”

Following Yankton andVermillion is Sioux Falls Lincolnwith 99 points, who have a slightlead over Sioux Falls Washington(92). Harrisburg is close behindthe Warriors with 88 points andWest Central is right behind theTigers with 83 points. BrandonValley leads Lennox for seventhwith 47 points to 41 and Tea Areais in ninth with 39.50 points.

Wrestling will resume today(Friday) in Brandon Valley’s gym at6 p.m.

In fact, Vermillion could gain several morepoints just by sticking their routines.

“We lost three and a half points at regionsbecause of falls,” Upward noted. “Add those in,and we’re hoping to be in the mix for sixth orseventh.”

Thomas followed later with a three-pointer, and thetwo teams would trade leads the rest of the first half.

USD got four straight points from Gentry to closethe half, taking a 22-19 lead into intermission.

Krogman added 15 points off the bench, whileKendall Cutler and Thomas each scored eight points.Cain and Smith rounded out the Coyote scorers withtwo points apiece.

As was the case in the first meeting between thetwo teams — Jan. 21 in Orem, Utah — USD struggledfrom the free throw line. In the loss to Utah Valley amonth ago, the Coyotes were just 14-of-30 at the chari-ty stripe.

Kevin Woods was the only Wolverine in double fig-ures, with 11 points.
