Die Bauhaus-Universität Weimar ist eine internationale Universität, zu Hause

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is an international university at home in the unique,

The Bauhaus Summer School offers you sophisticated,

In »Communication Skills« werden spezifische Fähig-

The course »Communication Skills« aims to train specific

skills required for giving presentations and informal talks in

English as well as focuses on developing the language skills

required for successful negotiations in a variety of contexts.

Dieser zweiwöchige Kurs konzentriert sich auf das schrift

liche Englisch im akademischen Kontext. Sie erhalten

nützliche Hinweise zum Thema Stil, Struktur und Zusam

This course concentrates on written English in an academic

context. The workshop nature of the course will encourage

you to produce short texts on a variety of subjects and to use

them as a basis for identifying areas of difficulty and working

In unseren Englischkursen unterrichten Sie ausschließlich Mutter-

sprachler. All our English courses are taught by native speakers.

The course explores architectural concepts and methods

through class presentations, on-site visits and studio

practice. Examples of contemporary European architecture

will be visited and discussed. Each class examines particular

building types, design principles and methodologies,

leading to practical design techniques. The course will

include as well site analysis and modeling of design ideas.

Your final project will be to design an Art Museum in Weimar.

Points, lines and areas as a starting point of the Bauhaus

foundation course create in their interplay space arrange-

ments. In combination with material, textures, light or

colour they evolve into characteristic places. We start with

dot, line and composition in two-dimensional exercises.

These experiences will be transferred into the three-dimen-

sional area and expanded with materiality, light and colour.

In the alternating process of perception, analysis, experiment

and creation, basic rules of design and specified architectural

space design will be derived.

Urban resilience relying to the robustness and preparedness

of our built environment and society to its vulnerability is

often hard to catch when it comes about its integration and

realization in the day to day realities. You will learn about

several aspects of urban resilience from an environmental

and cultural perspective through different tools, scientific

methods and analysis, including gis-techniques. The course

will introduce more general approaches for integrated urban

development and urban sustainability to the specific analysis

of urban heat islands as well as the analysis of different con-

struction typologies in relation to risks of earthquake damage.

In this hands-on course you will investigate and experiment

with architectural space in its most archaic form. By weaving

shapes, relations, proportions and light, architecture can

elevate new spatial experiences and phenomena. In this

context the work with physical models has still proved to be

one of the most fundamental methods to assess and produce

space – especially in our increasingly digitalized world.

By inten sively using large-scale caster models and over-sized

charcoal drawings, the course seeks to familiarize you with

the capacity to meaningfully evaluate a model and to trans-

late atmospheres and phenomena into architectural space.

As a trigger we will use text passages from canonical

German novels and their hints and insinuations of spatial

poetry within. Special features of this programme are

various lectures, such as inputs on building models and

on phenomenology in architecture.

The course explores multiple, hands-on, innovative artistic

approaches to increase perceptual sensibility and develop

a deepened grasp of the particularity of place. Discourses

from the visual arts, architecture and aesthetics are applied

to generate a better understanding of the diversity of spaces.

The course closely links theory and practice through lectures,

seminars, field trips through various shaped landscapes,

analysis and individual projects. Methods are introduced to

help capture spatial moods and to express them with artistic

techniques. Based on the analysis of the places selected,

you develop two artistic or architectural projects.

Starting points are urban everyday activities such as walking,

standing and sitting, which shape urban space and constitute

it as a living space first. We will explore current issues of urban,

community life in the city of Weimar. Using methods of

artistic field research and one‘s own body perception, you

will examine the city of Weimar to make use of the results

afterwards for artistic actions and interventions or urban

planning.

In this hands-on workshop, we want to find out how

the Bauhaus shaped our world. Following the traces of

the Bauhaus, we will visit sights and museums in Weimar

and Dessau, as well as the Grassi museum for art and craft

in Leipzig. Our final step will be in the wood-workshop,

where we will bring our projects to life, using wood and

all kinds of tools and machines. The course is a mix of theo-

retical lessons and visits and, of course, practical lessons in

the workshop where you have the possibility to build

your Bauhaus.

Design Thinking is a process for creating elegant user-centered

solutions in multidisciplinary teams. But it’s much more than

that: It is a mindset — another way of tackling challenges:

Empathetic and hands-on. Don’t talk, do! Implemented in

daily work, the problem-solving potential of Design Thinking

finds its expression in the form of a living innovation culture.

This is even more the case when truly desirable solutions

are sought. How this works in detail can be experienced

in this workshop. In this two weeks you will experience

and learn core competences for your work in creative and

innovative fields.

Art & Design

This course provides an insight on craft based artistic work

within the studio practice. Relying on the Bauhaus style, you

will use paint, brushes and imaginative painting techniques

to create your own artworks. Throughout the course you will

learn new techniques in the treatment of colour and experi-

ment the relationship between colour and form. We will give

an overview of Bauhaus painting and art practices and analyse

the development of painting »after Bauhaus« in America

and Europe.

In this course we explore the tension between light, vision

and space, and how our perception of space is influenced

by light. Lighting can add emotion to atmosphere and create

a sense of well-being in a space. You will be asked to chal-

lenge your perception of space and create a daylight or

an artificial lighting installation. Methods used to analyse

lighting setting and communicate lighting ideas will be

discussed during the course.

Learn or refresh your design basics with abstract elements

in the two- and three-dimensional way, exercising design

principles and design skills. We work mainly with black and

white, paper, pen, hands, body and perception. You will also

learn how to create movement or interactions with the com-

puter. Furthermore, we look for the extension of the design

principles like balance, tension, contrast, proportion and

so on. Works of important Bauhaus artists will inspire you

to design your own visual moving story.

In this course we playfully generate an interdisciplinary

and visual »dialogue« by means of your art/design work.

Based on rotation principles you create and respond to works

of your fellow students. This rotation varies by a defined

schedule during the 2-week term regarding space, time,

rhythm, media or team partners. You are free to choose

your preferred media, such as drawing, typography, photo-

graphy, installation etc., and are encouraged to blend them.

We challenge and discuss what media qualities emerge,

authorship, collaboration and interdependence as an artistic

»material« and strategy. This workshop challenges to engage

with diverse artistic forms, including the documenting print

media, and the environment where it is created.

The building sector is responsible for a large proportion

of the world’s consumption of energy and resources, and

has a significant environmental impact. Sustainability is

becoming increasingly important and architects and planners

have a great influence on the environmental performance

of a building. This course teaches how to optimize the

environmental performance of building design using digital

tools and design strategies. The mini-lectures include cycle-

orientated design concepts, cradle to cradle, reuse, energy

and resource efficiency, and life cycle assessment. These

approaches will be directly applied within this course for

a small design project.

The consideration of uncertainties in the model quality

be comes more and more important with the development

of new construction methods and design requirements.

In addition to the traditional forced-based approaches,

ex periences and observations about the deformation be -

havior of components and the overall structure under

different exposure conditions allow the introduction of

novel detection and evaluation criteria. Bauhaus-Universität

Weimar presents special topics of structural engineering

to highlight the broad spectrum of civil engineering in the

field of modeling and simulation. Through a challenging

and demanding series of lectures, as well as seminars and

project work, presented with a state-of-the-art information

and communication technology, this project seeks to impart

knowledge and to combine research with a practical context.

Geschichte und Zukunft Berlins. Im Anschluss können Sie

das Flair der Hauptstadt genießen und gemütlich durch die

Gassen schlendern, bevor Sie am späten Nachmittag noch

etwas über die »den Konsumrausch und die Abgründe

Berlins« lernen. Ihr Hauptstadt-Wochenende schließt ab

mit einer Stadtführung und einer Führung durch das histo

rische Reichstagsgebäude, Sitz des deutschen Parlaments.

Experience a weekend in one of the most fascinating cities

in Europe. Be drawn into the history and future of the capital

city of Berlin through guided tours during the week end.

You can use your free time to visit museums, do shopping

or just enjoy the rhythm of the city. Take also the oppor-

tunity to discover nightlife in Berlin. We will be happy to

give you some tips on-site! To finish the weekend, enjoy a

visit of the »Reichstagsgebäude« (the German Parliament

Sie möchten mehr über das Bauhaus erfahren? Dann

kommen Sie mit nach Dessau. Das Bauhaus wurde 1919

in Weimar gegründet und musste 1925 auf politischen

Druck und infolge finanzieller Schwierigkeiten einen neuen

Standort beziehen: Dessau. Mit einer Führung durch das

Bauhausgebäude Dessau, eines der wichtigsten Gebäude

der Klassischen Moderne, beginnt die Exkursion.

Nach einem Mittagessen im Bauhaus-Klub geht es weiter

zur Siedlung der Bauhausmeister. Die sogenannten

Meister häuser dienten als Wohn- und Atelierhäuser für

die am Bauhaus tätigen Lehrer, wie Gropius, Moholy-Nagy,

Feininger, Muche, Schlemmer, Kandinsky und Klee.

there. Because of political and economic instability, it had

to move to another city. Follow the trace of the Bauhaus and

go on a trip to Dessau. Discover one of the most important

buildings of the modern era. After a lunch at the Bauhaus

Club, visit the settlement of the Bauhaus masters where

famous instructors (like Gropius, Moholy-Nagy, Feininger,

Muche, Schlemmer, Kandinsky and Klee) lived and worked.

Goethes Gartenhaus veranschaulicht.

show why this city succeeded in becoming a cultural centre

zwischen 9 und 15 Uhr am Meeting

Point am Hauptbahnhof Weimar

die Kaution zurück.

You must arrange a walkthrough for

your apartment or room. After the

walkthrough you will receive a written

confirmation that you left your room

in an acceptable condition. You will

receive your deposit after you turn in

both the room key and the written

confirmation on the day of departure

(19 August or 02 September) between

9 am and 3 pm at the Meeting Point

at the Weimar Main Train Station.

rezeptfreie Medikamente finden Sie

im Drogeriemarkt.

the-counter medications are sold at

pharmacies. Only a few over-the-counter

medications are sold at drugstores.

Telefonkarten Prepaid Cards

Tipp: Deutschland ist leider noch nicht

flächendeckend mit W-Lan ausgestat-

tet. Eine Telefonkarte inkl. Internet-

nutzung ist also durchaus sinnvoll.

Tip: Germany is not yet a nationwide

w-lan country. Therefore it might

be good to get a pre-paid card

with internet access.
