Nor are the Geisha timid or fearful of battle. In times ofgreat need, they take the field alongside the Clan'sfighting men, using their understanding of the humanform and ancient mystical arts to heal even the mostgrievous of wounds. It is in their natures to easesuffering, not inflict it; although agile and lithe, theycannot stand against a hardened warrior. Fortunately,there is never a shortage of fighters willing to defendthem.

BATTLEGEAR

Sacrifice: The most ancient magic of the Geishadraws her spirit itself from her body, suffusingnearby allies with power and restoring them toperfect health. Only meditation at the Dragon

Shrine grants a Geisha the wisdom and courage toperform such an awesome spell, and none have eversurvived its casting.

Fire Shield: By learning the secrets of theFireworks Factory, a Geisha may project herpassion as a rolling cloud of flame about her

body, scorching all those who draw near enough to doharm.

Spearman: "I am the weapon. My naginata is merely anally."

Training: DojoInnate Ability: Due to the length of their spears,Spearmen are immune to the effects of height in combatwhen they are attacking melee opponents.

About: Dragon Clan peasants who show an aptitude inclose-quarters fighting begin their training with thehumble spear. From the dojo master, they learn thefoundations of the martial arts: strength, speed, andpoise. Opponents who pay attention only to the spearare often surprised when a Spearman lashes out onlywith his hands and feet in sharp, accurate strikes.

The spear is not the quickest of weapons although itsreach helps when assaulting foes on higher ground. Noris the spearman the most skilled of fighters. However,his training is simple and adaptable, forming the basisfor the more advanced techniques of the Dragon.

Stun Strike: Spearmen who spend time inmeditation at the shrine may learn to strike withsuch speed and force as to render their opponentshelpless with pain.

Whirling Spear: When the Fireworks Factoryfuses black powder with a spear, the result is awhirling terror that sprays nearby foes with a

shower of stinging sparks.

Archer: "When seen by the hawk, the rabbit's life isended. When my arrow flies, my enemy is already dead."

Training: Archery RangeInnate Ability: Stoic Calm: If the Archer has fullstamina, his first shot does double damage, draining abit of his stamina.

About: Those who train as Archers of the Dragon Clan -usually peasants with a gift for hunting - must possessmany talent, the least of which is incredibly keen vision.Far from being weaklings or cowards, Archers mustpossess great strength of arm to draw their enormousbows, and great strength of will to hold steady as theenemy bears upon them. As long as they remain restedand calm, Archers' arrows strike with otherworldly force.

However, this deadly proficiency comes at a price. ADragon Archer never panics or abandons his weapon,and his mighty bow makes a poor staff. Nor can he weararmor, lest it interfere with his delicate aim, or numbhim to the changing winds. A lone archer on thebattlefield is in a precarious situation indeed.

BATTLEGEAR

Zen Arrows: At the Shrine, an archer mayliterally become one with his weapons. This allowshim to glimpse the area surrounding his fallenarrows. However, he must remain perfectly still to

maintain such focus.

Fire Arrows: The Fireworks Factorymanufactures flaming arrows that quickly reduce

buildings to ashes. These tiny torches are moreinfuriating than dangerous to the living.

Chemist: "Let my foes perish in sulfur and smoke; forthem, the underworld will hold no surprises!"

Training: Alchemist LabInnate Ability: Healing Herbs: The natural healing rateof allies near the Chemist is increased when the Chemistis idling.

About: Some peasants, though quick of mind and keenof eye, just aren't cut out for the traditional battlefield.These often become chemists, learning to turn nature'shumble herbs and minerals into healing salves andbeautiful fireworks. Both talents have their wartimeuses, as the Chemist devises screaming rockets to rainupon his foes, or employs his medicines to speed thehealing of nearby allies.

Chemists are eccentric lovers of pyrotechnics, not studyfighting men; they stand little chance in a toe-to-toefight. Yet their unorthodox weapons and giddy, cacklingenthusiasm for explosives has unnerved more than onebattle-hardened Ronin, and turned the tide of more thanone battle.

BATTLEGEAR

Mandrake Spores: Chemists who meditate attheir shrine will gain certain herbal secrets. Thissoporific powder lowers enemies' defenses, lullingthem until they struggle to keep awake.

Star Burst Rockets: A lone Chemist in hislaboratory may craft dangerous rockets. AChemist with a Fireworks Factory at his disposal

is like a mad child in the Land of Flaming toys.

Dragon Warrior: "The Dragon lives in me, teeth and clawand bone. Dare you then, to wake a Dragon?"

Training: Dojo / Archery RangeInnate Ability: Inspiration: Allied units within range ofthe Dragon Warrior do more damage. Happens onlywhen he's attacking. Units can only be affected by oneDragon Warrior (non-stackable).

About: The Dragon Warrior is the purest incarnation ofthe Dragon's ferocious spirit. Disdaining armor, he fightsbare-chested without fear, protected only by hislightning reflexes and the silver arm-guards thatrepresent his pride and honor. His sword slices throughthe air and his enemies without hesitation, its temperedsteel matching the steel within. Even his allies taste thecourage of the Dragon and fight more fiercely when heleaps into action.

So complete is this fighter's embodiment of rage that hecan project it through his blade, striking enemies fromafar. Still, he prefers to defeat opponents up close. It issimply his way.

BATTLEGEAR

Chi Shield: by meditating at his patron's shrine,the Dragon Warrior learns to balance his angerwith inner peace, thus attaining the Dragon'sinvulnerability to harm - for as long as he can

focus on peaceful thoughts, and resist the urge to attack.

Flame Sword: The masters of Fireworks canimbue the Dragon Warrior's sword with anaffinity for searing flames. In battle, his inner

fire does the rest.

Kabuki Warrior: "Care you, good lords, for an amusingshow? Allow me to show you your doom."

About: The Dragon Clan has always understood combatto be an art: passionate, inventive, and beautiful. Noneunderstand this better than the Kabuki Warrior, whoseskills with illusion and the blade meet in a flowingaesthetic of death. He is a master at luring hisopponents into deadly errors, and strikes in close withsteel, or at a distance with a deadly magical powder. Yethis lust for battle never diminishes his lust for life, andhis sleight-of-hand is ever a source of simpleentertainment and joy to the peasantry.

Kabuki is an art of extravagant balance, and the KabukiWarrior is a balanced combatant, quick and flexible,neither cautious nor foolhardy. Few care to face him incombat; the threat of humiliation is, perhaps, worsethan the fear of death.

Stardust: Through meditation ad the Shrine, theKabuki Warrior learns his secrets of illusion; thissparkling dust leaves missile-using opponentsdazzled and unable to aim accurately through its

cloud.

Flashpowder: Originally a tool of the stagemagician, flash powder's ability to leave enemiesstaggering and blind is magic enough for the

battlefield.

Powder Keg Cannoneer

Training: Alchemist Lab / Archery RangeInnate Ability: Purifying Salt: The cannoneer willthrow salt to ward off bad spirits and any unitsnearby will receive half damage from the nextattack they recieve.

About: Dragon tacticians disdain firearms as crudeand inflexible: Foolish weapons borne only byfools. On the other hand, they have longrecognized the usefulness of artillery on thebattlefield. The result of this duality is the PowderKeg Cannoneer. These elite fighters spend half oftheir time training with their unique weapon, asmall cannon that launches kegs packed withgunpowder. The other half is spent eating, for -considerations of strength aside - it takes a man ofimmense proportions to withstand the recoil ofsuch a cannon. The very best Cannoneers areformer sumo champions; one may still see themsalting the ground to ward off evil spirits andensure their safety, just as they once did in thewrestling ring.

The sight of a crew of tremendously fat menlumbering towards the battlefield, has, onoccasion, incited jeers and laugher from foolishopponents. The laughter stops when cannoncharges begin tearing apart buildings as easily asmen.

BATTLEGEAR

Indirect Fire: The cannon is difficult to handleaccurately even at close range. Yet, withmeditation (and a double charge of gunpowder),the Cannoneer learns to fire far beyond the bounds

of sight - anywhere an ally can shout and be heard. >

Shrapnel Keg: Cannoneers and Chemists getalong quite well, and the demented geniuses ofthe Fireworks Factory take special delight in

assembling flesh- and bone-shredding novelty.

Samurai: "I am the Dragon's honor, and nothing more.You are nothing at all."

Innate Ability: Seppuku: The Samurai commitsseppuku (suicide) when he is defeated, releasing hisspirit and damaging all nearby enemies.

About: On the field of battle, there is no greater forcethan the Samurai. Ferocious as tigers, wise as Dragons,they are brilliant tacticians as well as supreme warriors,defending the honor of their Clan above all else. Clad ingleaming steel plate, the Samurai are masters of bowand blade, wielding both with all the power and subtletyof the ancient masters. Few can stand against such aforce.

It is said that, even in death, a true Samurai nevertastes defeat. When overmatched by hordes of enemies,the Samurai always chooses to disembowel himselfrather than fall to an enemy's knife. Such couragereleases a storm of righteousness that devastates theSamurai's enemies even as he passes serenely into thenext world.

BATTLEGEAR

Yang Blade: At the Dragon Shrine, the Samurai'sblade is blessed with the ability to perform heroicdeeds, adding to the glory and mystical power ofhis Clan with each stroke.

Dragon Skin: The Fireworks Factory can treat aSamurai's armor so that, when he focuses hismystical powers, it renders him entirely immune

to all missile weapons. However, it takes greatconcentration and stamina to transform steel into theSkin of the Dragon.

Arah: "My thoughts move, my arrows fly… one and thesame."

Training: KeepInnate Ability: Deadly Accuracy: Her arrows arelaunched with greater velocity than normal arrows,being more likely to hit the target and do more damage.

About: Arah is an archer without peer, and her skillsovershadow even the Dragon Clan archers of old - herarrows move with a speed, accuracy, and force thatterrify her foes. Flying from the oversized longbow shecarries, they punch through armor and bone likestabbing spears.

She traveled to this land from elsewhere, having metKenji during his long exile. Somewhere in their sharedpast is a bond that links them, a blood debt or point ofhonor that led her to follow him home. A tall, slenderwoman, her manner is distant and cold, but for now shefights for the Dragon with all her heart and soul.

Sight Beyond Sight: Arah has long sinceachieved the unity with her weapon that allDragon archers pray for. When she wishes she canlet an arrow become an extension of her mind

through which she can sense the landscape.

About: Garrin worked his way up from stable boy tocavalry general through matchless skill and tacticalbrilliance, and men who served under him still speakwith awe at his exploits on the battlefield. Even after hebecame a general and strategist he still took the fieldalongside his men, armed with a lance and grimdetermination. Garrin loves to beat the odds, and hiscunning and stubbornness make the difference evenagainst taller or higher-placed foes.

Call Horse: Garrin's years in the stables and onhorseback have enabled him to summon wildhorses at will. When he uses this skill, the nearestfree horse will come running to him.

Training: KeepInnate Ability: Fire Wielder: Huge armor bonus againstfire and explosive damage.

About: Kazan is one of the four Elemental Brothers ofthe Serpent Clan, a monastic fighting order nowscattered. Kazan the Fire Brother, however, is still verymuch with us, wandering the land, drinking, andlighting things on fire. In turbulent times he occasionallyjoins up with a traveling circus troupe, where his hugesize and boisterous disposition appear less conspicuousto hostile eyes.

And in most contexts, Kazan is quite conspicuous indeed- he is a huge man, enormously fat and invariable drunkon the poisonously strong brew he carries with him in apumpkin-sized gourd. In a fight it is usually the closestthing at hand and he swings it to deadly effect. Fires ishis friend and element, and as such poses little dangerto him - explosions and other fire and do little harm tohis tough hide.

About: When the last son of Tarrant's line died, it fell tohis chief ministers to keep order in the land - of these,the most beloved by the people was Otomo. WhereShinja ruled through strength and fear, Otomo inspiredloyalty and bravery in his followers through fairness,wisdom and honorable behavior.

His enemies deride him as weak and soft, but anyonewho has faced him in battle knows the opposite - hisvery presence seems to put strength into his allies. Inhim, it is whispered, something of the old Dragon Clansurvives.

About: This enigmatic mercenary has been observedwandering the land for at least forty years, perhaps farlonger. He travels alone and simply, seldom mounted,carrying only a long staff and a small sack of rice,sleeping in barns or under the stars. He is described astall and slender, speaking little, never giving trouble.Those foolish or desperate enough to bother him haveseen that he is lightning quick on both attack anddefense.

He seldom enlists in any struggle for long, and maywork with Serpent as well as Dragon. He claims to serveneither yin nor yang but only a balance between them.Most mysteriously, he has ties to both monk and ninjaorganizations, and seems to share some of both theirtraits.

BATTLEGEAR

Reversal of Fortune: Tao is deeply tuned to thebalance of things. Anyone dealing harm to such abeing will see a portion of it returned to them, forTao stands at the center of all forces and fates.

Of all Lotus adepts, only the Channeler is able to trulymend the wounds of another. She is bonded to threeraven familiars, but must snap the brittle neck of one ofthem in order to fuel her dark spells of regeneration. Asibling from the aviary eventually replaces the sacrificedraven, but there is invariable a period of mourningbefore this happens. Despite this, a Channeler's ravenswill fight for her if she must stand to battle.

This rage is focused outwardly, upon theenemies of the Lotus, and inwardly, upon their physicalinadequacies. Frustration slowly and painfully reshapesthem, until their elongated limbs and steely skin causethem to resemble the wicked, curved scimitars theycarry. When not engaged in meditation, Acolytes may beseen sharpening, polishing, and occasionally speaking tothese swords.

The Forbidden Path does not lend robust health to itspractitioners, and the Blade Acolyte is less study than amundane swordsman. However, his inhuman agility anddeep understanding of violent death grants himterrifying skills in combat.

About: Initiation with cold calculation and vengefulthoughts is recognized as a spiritual brother of Sehk, theCrafty One. Along the strange, disorienting paths of hisBlade Garden, Leaf Disciples learn to twist and distorttheir minds and surroundings through sheer force of will.Such distortion is not easy, and Disciples must expendan inordinate amount of effort in study before they caneven manipulate the razor-thin, paper-light leaves of theTree of Corruption.

On the field of battle, these leaves spin and whirl abouta Disciple's head like a flock of angry sparrows. With anindolent flick of his finger, he can send them whistlingtowards and enemy's head or cause them to slice andslash at nearby foes. Enough small cuts can bleed thestrongest enemy to death, and no Disciple ever seems torun out of leaves.

Scrye Leaves: With Sehk's help, a disciple maybind his sight to his spinning leaves, viewing hissurroundings in mad, kaleidoscopic glimpses. Byflinging these leaves aloft, he can briefly see vast

landscapes in their metallic reflections.

About: Those novices who pass through the Rites ofInitiation with quiet, stoic hopelessness demonstratetheir kinship with Tausil, the Forsaken One. Theseinitiates endure endless, repetitive drills at the TrainingGrounds, repeat interminable chants of droningmonotones, and maintain ceaseless and solitary vigilsover the Tree of Corruption. From existence, theygradually learn to accept emptiness as the sole truthamong the distractions of life.

In combat, the Staff Adept moves quietly, with littleapparent interest in his surroundings. Yet the emptinessof his soul gives him a painful awareness of - andloathing for - those who disturb his inner silence. He isutterly fearless, and is more than able to engagemultiple opponents with the emotionless, technicallyperfect spins and flourishes of his staff. For such a frail-seeming opponent, the Staff Adept finds painsurprisingly irrelevant.

Dark Canopy: Granted Tausil's insights intonothingness, a Staff Adept may spin his weaponoverhead with such flawless precision that itdeflects missiles from all nearby allies.

About: The Diseased One's blossoming inner corruptionhas overwhelmed his immune system: he is a breedingground for every imaginable plague. An ordinary manafflicted with a tenth of the Diseased One's maladieswould be dead within the hour. Yet he has learned todraw just enough vital energy from his corruption tostave off death, and so he lives in a nightmarish twilightof fevered delusions, racking pains, and his desperate,scrabbling will to live.

Lurching about the field like a drunken man, theDiseased One is a clumsy fighter at best; it is notdifficult to end his tortured existence. However, as heexpires, his body explodes from the sudden internalpressures of rot and decay, spreading pestilence acrossa wide area.

BATTLEGEAR

Projectile Vomit: The Diseased One cantemporarily relax his control over his illnesses,spewing a stream of virulent vomit that isextremely harmful to the living.

Death Wail: By consuming the flesh and soul ofa living being, the Diseased One learns the truehorror of the corruption that consumes him from

within. As he wails, he releases the very soul of hisvictim to terrify horses and sap the willpower of hisenemies.

Training: Blade Garden, Training YardInnate Ability: Darkness: Upon the Unclean One'sdeath, a dark cloud surrounds the area where he diedand reduces the line-of-sight for enemy units in the areato 0 for a brief period.

About: The Unclean One has nurtured the core of evilwithin himself to such a level that his mortal shellcannot contain it. As a result, his body begins tomanufacture great quantities of black, tarry, vitriolic goothat he must constantly struggle to expel from his lungsand stomach. Hacking, coughing, and vomiting almostconstantly, these benighted souls struggle for life withevery rasping breath; eating is difficult, and sleeping formore than a few minutes at a time would be fatal.

In battle, the Unclean One flings his wretched slime atopponents, searing and dissolving the flesh of thoseunlucky enough to be struck. Should he be dispatched,the blackness in his soul is released, blanketing the fieldwith a hideous parody of night.

BATTLEGEAR

Spreading Goo: The Unclean One can exert somecontrol over his bubbling evil, and may transformit into a vicious sticky substance that drasticallyslows oncoming enemies.

Death Sentry: After eating a hapless peasant,the Unclean One can imprison its soul in thegrisly remains of its skull, much as he imprisons

his evil within himself. This abomination is known as aDeath Sentry. The Unclean One can see distant landsthrough its vacant sockets, and its agony torments allthose who pass nearby with wracking pains.

Infested One: "Am I not the kindest of parents, whofeeds ten thousand children with his own tender meat?"

About: The Infested One's corruption is literal indeed;his swollen belly is a host to a mass of hungry maggotsthat devour his raw, bleeding flesh as quickly as it canheal. He lives in a state of constant suffering, yetidentifies, perhaps, with his maggots: from their brutal,swarming life energy, he siphons the strength tocontinuously regenerate his body.

When angered, the Infested One flings writhing clots ofstarving maggots at his foes. These burrow into healthyflesh with terrible, swift efficiency. Upon his death, his'children' abandon his cold, worm-eaten corpse enmasse, seeking new hosts upon which to feed.

BATTLEGEAR

Rebirth: In the ultimate act of brotherhood withhis pestilence companions, the infested One maydevour the bodies of the living, trapping theirsouls within him. Should the Infested One receive

a fatal wound, this raw vitality generates torn flesh,effectively raising him from the dead.

Famine: The act of consuming one of his ownclan enables the Infested One to forcibly ripworms from this stomach and fling them across

an enemy's rice fields. This is painful and costsstamina, as the worms prefer the taste of flesh and donot relinquish it easy. It is far more painful to the cropsand those who depend on them.

About: Students of the Forbidden Path are defined bytheir shortcomings: the collapsed fortitude of theDiseased, the failed self-control of the Unclean One andthe cannibalistic hunger of the Infested. The astuteWarlock, however, has conquered all of these pitfalls anddiscovered how to balance the delicate dance of life,corruption and death within his soul. No longer prey tosickness and torments, these elite sorcerers of theForbidden Path are able to fling bolts of destructionacross great distances and suck the living energy out ofthe weak. They are mightily feared, and the mere act ofopposing one drains courage from the stoutest fighter.

Despite its confidence, the Warlock has not thesturdiness of the truly healthy, and is best kept from thefront lines. However, from time to time he may sap thestrength close to him to regain strength.

fledged warlock can set foot within its walls and hope tosurvive.

When two warlocks declare that they have attainedperfect understanding of the Tree of Corruption, theyenter the tower together,. Nobody knows what terriblewisdom is imparted there, what dread specters arisefrom the past, or what fantastic duels take place. Onlyone Warlock emerges from the Tower, and with him hecarries the polished, grinning skull of his opponent.Thereafter he is a near-immortal terror on thebattlefield, commanding wizardries beyond imagination,swinging the skull with the force of a giant's hammer.

Though it is speculation, some guess that the truewinner of the Warlock's Duel is actually the gleamingskull, and the Master Warlock, for the skull is beyondpain and death, and forever whispers the black,unknowable secrets of the grave in his captive owner'sear.

Lythis' Soul Thresher: At the Blade Brother'sbuilding the Master Warlocks's energy blasts canbe tuned to cleave not just the body, but the soulitself.

His power is such that heseems to shimmer at all times, a trait infuriating toenemy archers.

About: For hundreds of years, Lord Zymeth has ruledthe Lotus Clan as the undisputed first among equals. Heis a master manipulator and orator, using deception andthreats to build coalitions and cow opponents. In hisdealings with other clans, Zymeth also uses his greatlongevity to powerful effect, planning schemes that spangenerations of Wolf and Serpent clansmen.

No one could rule the Lotus without being a wizard aswell as a statesman, and Zymeth is no exception. Likemost of the warlock elite he is a specialist, and hissphere is weather, the sizzling crackle of lightning or therelentless force of a summer storm.

Heavy Rain : The storm-clouds are at Zymeth'sbeck and call. When he wishes, he can raise thehumidity around him until a rainstorm results, andthen call lightning from the resulting storm.

survive. Though beautiful, the Serpent Geisha tendtowards a certain hardness of character.

They are not reluctant to enter battle; in fact, manyprefer the duties on the battlefield to those in thebathhouse. Their deep knowledge of physiology andpsychology allows them to efficiently heal wounds. Theyalso wield their razor-edged metallic fans with surprisingagility and strength. These weapons may appear fragileand delicate, but often prove fatal to enemies whounderestimate them; this is true of the Fan Geisha aswell.

BATTLEGEAR

Dark Pact : The Fan Geisha are on comparativelygood terms with the Thieves, with whom they finda practical outlook similar to their own. From theirstolen tomes of magic, the Geisha can learn to

barter with a minor demonic spirit that protects her alliesfrom harm in exchange for a portion of her life force.

Razor Fans : The Metal Shop can weave spellsaround the Geisha's fans so that they do notmerely spill, but actually drink their victims'

blood. When these dark weapons bite into flesh the lifethey consume heals the wounds of nearby allies.

They much prefer the crossbow: easy tohandle and quick-firing, its bolts swill strike withconsiderable force. An effective Crossbowman's trainingtime is measured in days, not weeks.

Crossbowmen are usually selected from the ranks of thewiry and fleet-footed: those whose natural tendency,when confronted by a beefy warrior, might be to runrather than fight. In numbers, even noviceCrossbowmen can be a deadly menace to seasonedwarriors.

BATTLEGEAR

Weakness Bolts: These darts are a favorite tool ofthe Thieves' Guild. They bear tracers of a rarealchemical poison that brings a swift chill to themuscles, rendering enemies defenseless.

About: Musketeers are, without a doubt, the haughtiestof the Serpent's fighting ranks. Proud of their costlyweapons and the training it takes to fire themaccurately, they tend to strut about the barracks in away that does little to endear them to the other troops.Yet few dare openly mock their self-important bravado.One's skill with a blade means little to a man who cankill you with the twitch of his finger, and the proudMusketeers rarely miss.

Although their guns punch through armor and flesh withfrightening efficiency, they are also cumbersome andsuffer from a slow rate of fire. In truth, Musketeersdeserve credit for the courage it takes to reload such aweapon in the heat of battle. However, if they were morewarmly regarded by the bladesmen who defend them,they would probably live longer.

Sniper Scope : Always the innovators, theartificers of the Thieves' Guild employ rare andcostly glasswork in these much-prized scopes,feared especially by enemy cavalry. These scopes

allow Musketeers to strike distant targets withdevastating accuracy.

Blast Shot : The Metal Shop reinforces amusket's barrel with steel alloys, allowing it tofire explosive charges instead of mere shot.

These can wreak havoc amongst close-packed foes.

About: Life amongst the Serpent is not easy, and thereare some who - by virtue of laziness, misfortune, orgeneral unpleasantness - find no craft or trade by whichto earn a living. These embittered men often becomecruel Raiders, whose trademark is to pillage remotetowns by night, then set them ablaze to distractpursuers. Spying out enemies through tangled forests issecond nature to a Raider.

Intelligent Serpent generals find uses for such men,pressing them into service in exchange for pardoningtheir crimes. Brandishing torches and lanterns, they areunsuited to single combat, but matchless at reducingenemy fortresses to cinders.

BATTLEGEAR

Brushfire: Raiders are vicious fighters andplunderers, but not always brilliant strategists. Thecunning ones frequently become professionalThieves, learning to set brush fires in rice fields

and forests that destroy precious resources and furthercover their tracks.

Caltrops: The Metal Shop manufactures thesewicked four-pointed stars fashioned so that onespike always points up. Pursuers intent on

revenging themselves upon Raiders, and careless of theground beneath their feet, are likely to find themselvescrippled for life.

Bandit: "He who sacrifices himself is an idiot. There maybe honor in death but there is far more profit in life."

disliked by his fellow troops, the Cannoneer is respectedand feared. Hauling tremendous cannons fashioned fromsolid tree-trunks and pig iron, these massive men of fewwords lumber about the battlefield stoically, though fewothers could even lift their burdens. These cannons fireheavy iron shot with such force that they often killseveral men at once as they rip through terrified andscattering enemy ranks. Practically one-man siegeengines and usually knowledgeable in the ways ofmasonry, lone Cannoneers have been known to demolishgranite fortifications in mere minutes.

At close range, the Cannoneers thrust and bash theirponderous guns, ripping flesh and shattering bones. Yet,burdened as they are, they are unable to parry or dodgeenemy strikes, and thus require infantry support to betruly effective.

Smoke Bombs : The crafty Thieves' Guild haslong used small smoke bombs to generateconfusion during their daring escapes. These largerversions are a recipe for battlefield chaos.

Mines: These compact explosive charges,available at the Metal Shop, are forced deep intothe ground by the cannon's blast, where they

sleep harmlessly until awakened by the haplessfootsteps of an enemy.

Ronin: "Life is a dark forest where beasts must kill to live.In such a wood, it is better to be a tiger than a man."

About: In every age and nation, there are wise men ofheroic strength: those whose swords shine in thenightmares of a hundred widows, and whose martial artsskills are no longer quite human. So it was with thesamurai of the Dragon, and so it is with the SerpentRonin: dark mirrors of their ancient counterparts,rejecting the samurai's code of honor as weakness, yethoning their talents to just as keen an edge. Such menmake deadly foes, on or off the field of battle.

In combat, Ronin wield a pair of razor-edged katanas,reasoning that their unholy proficiency with two bladeswill strike fear into those who cannot brandish one withequal force. In order to master this complex fightingstyle, they train only with blades, disdaining theSamurai's bow. When one of these hardened veteransperishes in battle, his accumulated ferocity andbitterness curses the very place of his death, whilespurring his allies on to vengeance.

BATTLEGEAR

Blood Bond : The Thieves' Guild is not considereda scholarly group, but they do have access tocertain volumes of dark sorceries. Using these, astrong-willed Ronin may enslave another's soul to

his own. Such a Ronin finds himself invulnerable to harm,as his wounds are magically transferred to his helplessslave's flesh.

Yin Blade : When plated with certain alloys ofiron and blood in the Metal Shop, the Ronin'skatanas gain the ability to suck the very life

force from their victims. This replenishes the health ofthe Ronin, and increases the mystical Yin force availableto his master.

Training: 4 Ronin are sacrificed at Necromancer'sThrone in order to summon the Necromancer.Innate Ability: Raise the Dead: The Necromancer raisesnearby corpses into zombies. Costs stamina and thezombies slowly lose health.

About: This mysterious, fiendish being must besummoned by the deepest profanity of which theSerpent is capable. He heeds mortal voices only whenflattered by the construction of a Necromancer's Throne,a structure beneath which are entombed skulls of theinnocent. Afterwards, four strong-willed Ronin mustsubmit to a ghastly ritual sacrifice, in token that theSerpent's strongest bow before his might. Only after thisappalling sacrifice of men and materials will the thingcalled the Necromancer commence his slaughter of theliving.

If the Necromancer is difficult to summon, he is almostcertainly impossible to banish. Disdaining melee combatas beneath his dignity, he prefers to conjure lesserdemons from the pits of the damned to slay hisenemies. These ordinarily take for as fearless SpiritWarriors. He may also send such spirits into the bodiesof the fallen, creating Zombies who know only the rawneed to kill.

BATTLEGEAR

Summon Spirit Warrior: After consuming thesouls of warriors, a necromancer can summon aSpirit Warrior at the cost of stamina. TheNecromancer can only summon three at a time.

Spirit Warrior: "Long live the Serpent!"

About: Budo is a peasant overseer, a large man who isalways seen with a barbed whip in his hand and a lookof low cunning on his face, early in his career he was thetarget of multiple accusations of torture, wantonbeatings, and callous murder. Naturally the Serpentlords saw the limitless potential in this rising star.

Budo's cruelty and stupidity became a perfect tool in thehands of men like Lord Shinja. Any province where Budowas put in charge would reliable have the hardestproductivity and lowest crime-rate in the known world -albeit also the highest rate of peasant deaths. After awhile the simple threat of placing Budo in charge meanta ten percent jump in the harvest.

About: Lord Oja's death left a power vacuum and noone more eager to fill it than Lord Shinja. Were it not forthe pierce personal loyalty of his rival Otomo inspires,surely he would now rule the entire land with his brandof pragmatic justice and ruthless efficiency. N one lovesLord Shinja, but no one can deny that he keeps orderand has helped preserve the Serpent Clan in difficulttimes.

In person Shinja is an undeniable force, charismatic,coldly intelligent and utterly without fear. No one hasever crossed him and lived to tell of it, beyond a babbledconfession in a chamber deep beneath Serpentholm. Hedespises talk of the old Dragon clan, and considershonor to be a sadly obsolete concept. In all things he isa realist, and magical attacks have been known to quailand dissipate under his skeptical gaze and indomitablewill.

About: Anyone who believes the geisha arts are aharmless business of strewing flowers and strummingtunes should meet Utara. In appearance she resemblesa normal geisha of great beauty, but she incarnates thedark side of their practices - she is a seductress, apoisoner, and possibly insane.

At four, Utara was orphaned by bandits and adopted bylocal geisha. She proved an apt pupil, delving intomedicine and other arts. One day she disappeared fromthe bathhouse, leaving dead a dozen Serpent raiders -by all accounts men not unlike those who had killed herparents. A few years later she reappeared as one of thestrangest weapons in the Serpent Clan's arsenal.

lost homeland; Wolf warriors refuse to study magic,believing that the spirit realms are best walked by thosewho devote their lives to wisdom and healing, notbravado and slaughter. They also pass down the storiesof their clan from mother to daughter, and everyDruidess knows at least a thousand tales, from rudejokes to holy fables. Thus, even though the Wolf Clanhas little use for books and written lore, theyhknowmore about their own origins than even thenear-immortals of the Lotus Clan.

In battle, the Druidess calls on her plant allies toentangle and slow enemies. She can also work intricatecharms, imbueing Wolf fighters with superhumanabilities. However, these charms are gifts of the spirits,and she must return to the Cairn periodically in order tomeditate and ask for their favor. When not fighting, orpraying, Druidesses may often be found in the ricefields, which always grow faster and more abundantly intheir presence.

Blessing: After praying at the cairn, the Druidessmay bless three of her warriors with great strengthand prowess before the must return for furtherenlightenment.

This unique and straightforward fighting style,like most of those now practiced by the Wolf, evolvedduring the slave mine revolts. About: Maulers started out as prisoners amongprisoners, and slaves among slaves. They were thosewho, in fits of rage, wounded or murdered heir Lotusoverseers. Such crimes would earn death from mostmasters. However, the Lotus understand he nature ofcruelty, and knew such men would suffer more fromcontinued service than they would from death.

Therefore, these pariahs were chained to incrediblymassive stones both night and day, magically compelledto work at twice the speed of the other slaves. Theyslept in their chains, moving only when an ore depositwas exhausted. The Maulers had their revenge on theday of the Wolf rebellion, when the Lotus learned thattheir 'prisoners' had not only developed the strength tomove their boulders, but also to swing them asterrifying, bone-crushing maces. Used to draggingenormous loads, they are not surprisingly fast on theirfeet.

Wrecking Ball : When emboldened by a Druidess'chants, a Mauler can actually swing his boulder ina full circle, smashing and scattering foes in alldirections.

About: The Wolves have always preferred the active,outdoor life, and have little interest in devising machinesto help them avoid effort; thus, they are not particularlytalented engineers. However, they picked up a few tricksin the slave mines, and have recently invented their ownversion of the footman's crossbow. Of course, like allthings Wolf, size triumphs over delicacy. This massive,crank-loaded Ballista launches twenty-pound logs withenough force to crash through strong fortifications ofimpale three men at once.

The Ballistaman can be defensive about his weapon ofchoice; other Wolves often mockingly describe it as 'anenormous toy for enormous children.' The ballista has avery specific role on the battlefield: it reloads slowly,and its wielder depends on the assistance of more agiledefenders to survive. Still, no missile weapon packs abigger punch.

Totem: A Druidess crafts these small, intricatetotems from blessed saplings. When fired, theyembed themselves in the ground, blanketing thearea with a beneficial aura that strengthens

Wolves and slows their enemies. The Ballistaman mustrepeat a simple chant to maintain the totem's power;unfortunately, this distracts him from firing his weapon.

About: Often Lotus overseers would order large shaleslabs broken down into manageable chunks, and this jobfell to the Sledgers. Wolf Clan slaves undertook the jobwith gusto, as it appealed to their natural instincts -hitting something repeatedly until it fell apart. The toolof choice was an oversized hammer, and underGrayback's direction this simple job became the trainingground for a secret fighting style based around single, ,shattering strikes.

Sledgers complain that no one understands theintellectual side of their discipline - their keen eye forstructural weaknesses, and the mental focus necessaryfor maximum breaking power.

Stun Slam : The Stun Slam was invented by anotoriously inaccurate Sledger, whose missedattacks would sometimes throw bystanders offtheir feet. When inspired to great force by a

Druidess blessing, the Sledger can stun units for a widearea with a single blow to the earth.

About: The art of Pitch Slinging evolved as a lifesavingtactic in the mines. As the enslaved Wolves burroweddeeper into the earth, something horrible began tohappen: entire mining teams would be discovered deadin the lower tunnels, their bodies unmarked by violence.At first, these deaths were attributed to subterraneandemons. Only after a skeptical Lotus overseer demandedto examine these bodies by torchlight - and wasdisintegrated by the ensuing blast - did the Wolvesrealize their men had struck pockets of odorless,poisonous gas, and that only their reliance onlow-burning lanterns had saved them from the flames.

The obvious solution was to detonate these pockets ofgas from a distance. Burning pitch proved the hottestand most reliable substance for the task. Always eagerto demonstrate their bravery, Wolf pitch slingers took toflinging the fiery sludge with their hands, protected onlyby tattered strips of cloth. These slingers are feared incombat, as much for their cheerful disregard for pain asfor the agony that a fistful of flaming pitch can inflict.

Scorched Earth : Together, the Pitch Slingers andthe Druidesses can extend the potency of burningpitch, so that they can lay a flaming trail as theywithdraw. Nothing makes a Wolf angrier than

retreating, and nothing eases the anguish better than thehowls of seared pursuers.

animal is far from symbolic. Certainly, clan membersseek to emulate the best qualities of the wolf - strength,endurance, and loyalty - but they also worship the spiritof the Wolf, and believe themselves close kin to thesequiet stalkers of the woods.

A Pack Master is something like a priest, a ranger and acombat instruction in one. He communes freely with wildwolves, speaking their language, living with them, andestablishing their respect. Once a month, the PackMaster leaves his village to run with his pack beneaththe full moon, usually returning with his face and handscovered in the dried blood of the kill. The Pack Mastershares equally in the wolves' hunts and feasts, countingthis the greatest pleasure attainable by a mere human.

In battle, the Pack Master fights with bestial strengthand courage. His wolves pose a greater danger, as theystand ready to rip the throats from any who dare harmtheir master.

companions to his side as long as any remain alive.

Sleeping beneath the stars, abstainingfrom cooked meat and plant food, he yet epitomizes theunique humor and humanity of the Wolf Clan. Berserkersrelish the art of storytelling, repeating their brutal tailsof wood and jungle to awed listeners around a fire. Theyalso delight in sports, and are the equal of ten men on aWolfball court. Though bearing the shape of a man, theyare said to be already quarter wolf within.

invariable assaults his strongest enemy first, reasoningthat courage makes a better story than cowardice, evenin the event of the hero's death. A fable among the Clanclaims that three enraged Berserkers once defeated acompany of nearly fifty men, fifteen of whom weretrampled in the others' rush to flee.

Lycanthropy: Only a Berserker has the strengthand wisdom to survive a Druidess' greatestsorcery, which is simultaneously a blessing and acurse: the transformation of man into beast.

About: We do not know much about Gaihla. She dwellsin the deepest, oldest woodlands, and according to thetales she is a solitary druidess or forest goddess, orsomething in-between. Hundreds of years old, she hasbeen known to disappear for decades and live out thetime as a giant oak tree. All forests and growing thingsare under her protection.

Despite her allegiance to life, she can be a viciousfighter, wielding a wreath of thorns against those whowould threaten the forests. Her relationship with plantlife is mysterious - she moves unimpeded through thedensest undergrowth, and any crops thrive in her verypresence.

About: Grayback emerged as the new chief in the timeof the Wolf Clan's enslavement, when the old line ofchieftains was dead, and the clan's very existence wasthreatened. The force of mind that allowed them tobreak their bonds was Grayback's - the covert training,the cunningly orchestrated uprising, and the carefullytimed messages to the Serpent. A menial slave, son ofprimitive hunters, he is clearly more than a match forthe proudest Serpent Lord, or for Lord Zymeth himself.

About: Even as a slave-child, Longtooth was famous forhis athleticism - leaping between rocks and swimmingthrough the treacherous underground waterways, heastonished his masters. Meanwhile he was winning asecret fame as a boxer and wrestler in the undergroundfighting pits and quarries. When the uprising came,those abilities were matched by a terrifying hatred andimpressive generalship. His deeds of that night haveplaced him next in line for clan leadership.

In battle Longtooth carries a unique weapon, a heavybladed boomerang he has learned to hurl withastonishing accuracy. Uneven battlegrounds give him aspecial advantage, as his athletic ability grants him amobility others lack.
