an encourager. The opposite, criticism, may sometimes be appropriate but al ltoo often it is offered too readily and hasthe effect of severely stunting andwounding. Conversely, encouragementbuilds up and releases people to flourishin their gifts and efforts. I wonder whatthe effect would be if we intentional lygave just that bit more encouragementto those around us: family, friends, workcolleagues or neighbours?

A big thank you to all who were involvedin the Passion Play. We were amazinglyblessed with good weather and, as wellas being able to enjoy a very movingperformance, £1 500 was raised to beshared with Asha, a charity which seeksto transform lives in the slums of Delhiand the ministry of St Swithun’s.

For anyone wishing to explore questionsof faith in a relaxed, friendly and funatmosphere we are holding anotherAlpha course starting on 24 Septemberat 7:30pm in the Community Shop.Coffee and dessert wil l be served, fol lowed by a short talk and discussion. All are very welcome whether or not youhave any knowledge or experience ofthe Christian faith. From the Vicarage. . . . . . . I am writing thishaving just watched local Olympian EdMcKeever win gold in the 200m kayakevent as the Olympic Games draws to aclose. We can now all look forward to theParalympic Games when I know many inBathford wil l be supporting a localsprinter, Ben Rushgrove, whosegrandmother Ji l l Heeley l ives in Bathford.

I was fortunate enough to be in theOlympic stadium for the first day of theathletics. Much has been made of thenoise in the stadium, and all I can say isthat it was incredible. Each time Britishheptathlon athlete, Jessica Enniscompeted, the roar from the crowd wasdeafening. We know that each athletehas talent and has worked incrediblyhard to be there, but for me the strikingfactor was that virtual ly every medall ist Iheard interviewed thanked family, friendsand coaches not just for their practicalhelp but also for their encouragement. Many talked about how the roar of thecrowd pushed them on, encouragingthem to achieve their very best. Therecan be no doubt that this supportcontributed significantly to Team GB’ssuccess in London.

Barnabas is a character who does notappear often in the New Testament butwhen he does his role is of crucialimportance. His name means ‘Son ofEncouragement’ and he got the namebecause he was an encourager ofothers. Without his background role ofencouragement, particularly to St Pauland St Mark, I wonder if they would havebeen as effective in overcoming hugehurdles to establish the early Church?

We all need a ‘Barnabas’ in our l ives toencourage us, to spur us on, to try newthings, to help us keep going and even,at times, simply to assure us that we aredoing alright. Having witnessed theimpact of a roaring crowd on ourathletes, I am challenged to be more of

FoodBank. As many of you wil l know, Bathford hasbeen supporting the Bath branch ofFoodBank for several months nowthrough donations of specific foodsplaced in boxes in the vil lage shop andChurch. We have recently received anupdate from the area organisers asbelow:-

"In the past six weeks, we have fedsome 69 Households including 33children. Demand seems to be levell ingoff sl ightly but we are expecting it toincrease again during school hol idays. The main reasons for our cl ientsneeding food are due to benefit delays, benefit cuts, mortgage arrears, debt andlower or loss of income.

We are very grateful to our supportersand due to their generosity have beenable to respond very quickly toshortages. Our current need is for sugar(500 Gms bags), tinned meat products, instant coffee and sponge puddings.

Thank you very much for al l that youhave done already, no matter how greator small - it is al l needed to feed localpeople"

Recipients of FoodBank assistance allhave to be assessed by either theirdoctor, social/care worker or similar andissued with official documentation toconfirm their el igibi l i ty. Such assistanceis for emergencies only and lasts nomore than 3 days at a time - it does notin any way attempt to be a long-termsolution or al low people to becomedependant on it.

Thank you all for your giving to helpthose who are going through really hardtimes - we know how much this practicalhelp is appreciated.

Bathford Passion Play 201 2Following months of hard work, theBathford Passion Play turned out to be atriumph. The two performances drewhuge praise from all those privi leged tobe present.

The life of Christ, from birth to trial wasportrayed in the beautiful garden ofSycamore House in the centre of thevil lage. This made possible a complexsequence of scenes, under the directionof Cathy Adeane. The play was alwaysvisual ly engrossing and wasaccompanied by atmospheric musicprovided by local composer, NickBreeze.

Over 70 people contributed their talentsto this large production and in manydifferent ways, acting and non-acting.Ages ranged from a few weeks old toalmost 90. A delightful and convincingflock of sheep on the Bethlehem hil lsidewas played by vil lage children.

The audience was drawn in to the story.Shouting Hosannas and waving palmbranches as Jesus and his disciplesentered Jerusalem and, again sombrelyprocessing together through the vil lageas Jesus was taken to his crucifixion. The huge and challenging role of Jesuswas acted impressively by Robert Jones.

The final emotional scenes of theCrucifixion and Resurrection took placeat St Swithun's and there, final ly, al ljoined in singing Whittier's much lovedhymn 'Dear Lord and Father of Mankind'.

This production has indeed drawn greatpraise from all who participated andobserved. Money has been raised for StSwithun's and for 'Asha', a charityhelping Delhi slum dwellers. Onemember of the audience, a visitor to thevil lage, summed it up. She spoke, grateful ly, of the impact of “a storyeffectively and well told”.

Jeanette Kremer and Jenny Matthews
