JOE SKINNER KNIGHT... #SKINNERSTRONG • For the second consecutive year, the Knights joined forces with the SkinnerStrong Foundation to raise money to aid in the fight against pediatric cancer, totally more than $24,000 in 2018. • All proceeds from donations will go to the SkinnerStrong Foundation• Named after UCF signee, Joe Skinner, who passed away from an acute form of lukemia, Joe Skinner Knight will be the culmination of a month of fundraising. The Black and Gold raised $33,000 last year for a two-year total north of $57,000.

DOWN GOES NO. 1... TWICE... WE SWEPT FLORIDA • In the home-and-home series with Florida, the Knights defeated the No. 1 ranked team in the country for the first time in program history. UCF did it again on Wednesday in Gainesville.• Tyler Osik and Brody Wofford combined for seven RBI in the series opener.• The UCF pitching staff tossed a four hitter, while Rylan Thomas and Matthew Mika homered in a 4-2 win over the Gators to clinch the sweep.

HONORING 3 • Prior to the UCF vs. Miami game on March 14, the Knights presented Hurricanes skipper Jim Morris with a special-plat-ed base honoring his countless years of service to baseball.• UCF head coach Greg Lovelady won two national championships and started his coaching career at Miami.• Lovelady has instilled many of Morris’ principles in the UCF baseball team.

THE STREAK • The Knights won 13 straight games in late February and early March.• The 13 games tied (1998) for the fifth longest streak in program history. 1995’s 29-game streak is the record.• UCF outscored opponents 91-38 during the streak.• The pitching staff posted a 2.38 ERA with 147 strikeouts.

HOLY HOMESTANDS, KNIGHTRO • The Knights will play 20 of their first 25 games at John Euliano Park to start the year.• The 2018 season features 36 UCF games in Orlando.

PEOPLE WILL COME KNIGHTRO, PEOPLE WILL MOST DEFINITELY COME • The Knights have had some impressive attendance numbers at John Euliano Park.• UCF broke the weekend attendance mark with 7,183 fans for Opening Weekend.• The Opening Knight attendance of 3,394 ranks eighth all-time for John Euliano Park. • Fans nearly broke the record when No. 1 Florida came to town with 4,016 in attendance.

PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE • UCF brought in 18 players to Orlando - nine position players and nine pitchers.• Two were junior college national champions and four were selected in previous MLB Drafts.• The Knights’ recruiting class was ranked 16th in the nation by Collegiate Baseball and 23rd by DIBaseball.

CHECK OUT THE NEW DIGS • Thanks to the generous contribution of UCF Foundation Board of Directors Vice Chairman John Euliano, UCF upgraded the previous press box into a new Home Plate Tower.• The Home Plate Tower officially opened on March 23 for The American opener against ECU.• The roughly $3 million project features a premium club and new second-floor press box. • UCF set the attendance record for Opening Knight with 3,394 fans to watch against No. 15 Virginia.• Opening Weekend was also the largest weekend crowd at John Euliano Park with 7,183 fans.

WHAT A YEAR • The Knights posted a 40-22 record in 2017 in head coach Greg Lovelady’s first campaign at UCF.• For sensational play throughout the year, a trio of Knights earned All-America status.• The pitching staff set the school record for team ERA in a season at 3.0 - fifth best in the nation.• UCF was not afraid to steal last year. The Knights posted topped the century mark for the first time since 2008 with 106 swipes out of 122 attempts.

KNOW THE LINGO LEAVING A LEGACY One of the mantras that Coach Lovelady has instilled in the program is Leaving a Legacy. Each player realizes that they are a part of a larger picture that encompasses the entire history of UCF Baseball.

In order to leave their legacy, players must reach the bar that former teams have set for them, then raises it for future generations of Knights. Players are reminded of this phrase on the dugout card on game days.

TODAY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT DAY OF THE SEASON Another of Coach Lovelady’s mantras directs players to not take a day off or for granted.

The team hears that phrase before every practice and game. It also appears on the dugout card.

#BUILTBYUCF Heading into the 2018 season, the Knights will have 15 former student-athletes competing at various professional levels, including five in the Major Leagues. This hashtag is used when praising their professional accomplishments.

#SKINNERSTRONG In December of 2015, Joe Skinner signed a National Letter of Intent to play for UCF. He never got the opportunity, as he was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia and passed away in April of 2016.

Close with other members of the Knights 2016 signing class, UCF honored Skinner last season by raising more than $30,000 for cancer research last year. UCF will again host Joe Skinner Knight during the 2018 season on April 27.

Dallas Beaver, one of Skinner’s best friends, always wears a wristband with #SkinnerStrong.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS BHILL? One of the more entertaining fan contests at each home game is Where in the World is BHill?

Named after the Knights’ equipment manager and experienced world traveler Bryan Hill, the contest features Photoshopped images of Hill around the world, and the contestants has to get three correct in order to win a UCF prize pack.

Greg Lovelady was named the head baseball coach at UCF on July 11, 2016.

In just one season with the Knights, Lovelady guided UCF to the American Athletic Conference regular-season title with an overall record of 40-22 and a 15-9 mark in league action, earning The American Coach of the Year honors in the process.

The Knights saw drastic improvements offensively and pitching in Lovelady’s first year. UCF jumped up to 66th in the nation in scoring from 222nd in 2016, eighth in stolen bases up from 77th and 44th in runs from 189th. The pitching staff posted the fifth best ERA in the nation with a 3.0, compared to the 4.23 mark during the previous year. Pitchers took the team to 28th in strikeouts per nine innings, 24th in strikeouts-to-walks ratio and 10th in WHIP.

Lovelady oversaw four Knights selected in the 2017 MLB Draft, including Jason Bahr (5th Round, San Francisco Giants) and Robby Howell (10th Round, Cincinnati Reds).

Also in 2017, Lovelady coached Rylan Thomas (NCBWA, Perfect Game, Baseball America, DI Baseball and College Baseball News) and Joe Sheridan (College Baseball News and Perfect Game) to Freshman All-American honors. Senior Robby Howell was tabbed ABCA All-Region.

In his career, Lovelady has coached 32 MLB Draft picks between his three coaching stops, including 12 Top-10 round selections and nine tabbed in the first five rounds. Three players under Lovelady’s tutelage have gone in the first round, including the fifth overall pick in 2005 and Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun.

Lovelady came to Orlando after spending three years as the head coach at Wright State, where he led the Raiders to consecutive runner-up finishes at NCAA Regionals in 2015 and 2016. As the Raiders’ head coach, he has compiled a 124-56 record in three campaigns and was with the Raiders for a total of 12 years. Wright State has won the Horizon League Regular Season or Tournament Championship (or both) in each of Lovelady’s three seasons at the helm. He was named the 2014 and 2016 Horizon League Coach of the Year, as well as the 2016 ABCA/Diamond Mideast Regional Coach of the Year.

Lovelady won a Wright State school record 46 games and its second straight Horizon League tournament title and reached his second straight NCAA Regional Final in Louisville, falling to the #2 ranked and host Cardinals 3-1. Along the way, WSU posted a 7-3 win over Ohio State.

Along with being named the Horizon League Coach of the Year for the second time, Lovelady was also selected as the ABCA/Diamond Mideast Regional Coach of the Year.

Lovelady came to WSU after a successful playing career and three-year stint with one of the nation’s elite teams in Miami (FL). The Hurricanes won two national championships, in 1999 and 2001, with Lovelady as the catcher. A four-year letterman for the ‘Canes, Lovelady captained the 2001 squad that won its second national championship in three years.

Lovelady hit a career best .314 with a 14-game hitting streak during his 1999 campaign. Lovelady was also a fan favorite in Coral Gables, receiving the Arnold Novins Award in 2001, an honor bestowed on the “Most Popular Player” as voted by the fans of Miami. The ‘Canes made a postseason appearance during each of Lovelady’s years as a player and coach in Coral Gables. UM Reached the College World Series five times and advanced to the NCAA super regional seven times while Lovelady was on campus.

Lovelady graduated from Miami in 2001 with a degree in Finance and a minor in Sports Management as a member of the university’s deans list. Professionally, Lovelady played with the Utica Blue Sox, an affiliate of the Florida Marlins, and helped develop two UM catchers and numerous pitchers into major league draft choices.

Lovelady and his wife Lindsay have two sons, Noah Preston, who was born on December 16, 2008, and Gavin Philip, born on June 10, 2012.
