The club is believed to have been formed in 1892 as John Smith’s FC. It wasn’t until 1923 that the Tadcaster Albion AFC name was adopted. In the early years the club played in the local York League. In 1948 Albion won the York League. They continued competing in the York League during the 1950’s & 60’s.

Tadcaster Albion, in the early days, played home games on the site of the cricket ground on Station Road, before moving to the Ings ground, near to where the present Samuel Smith Brewery Packaging Block now stands. Changing facilities were in the town, at the rear of the Falcon Public House on Chapel Street, and it was a common Saturday afternoon sight to see nets, corner flags, buckets, oranges, players and officials trekking through the town.

Down the years the club has played in several leagues. In early times, Barkston Ash and later still the Yorkshire and Northern Counties East Leagues.

Football continued on the Ings ground until 1960, when the club moved 100 yards up river to its present home at the Park.

In 1973 the club joined the Yorkshire League Division 3 and were promoted in 1975 & 1977 to reach Division 1, relegation was to follow in 1979 & 1980.

In 1982/83 they became a founding member of the Northern Counties East League, originally in the NCEL Division Two North before league reorganisations led them to Division One in 1991. They rarely finish in the top half of the league in the 1990’s and finished bottom in 2001/02 & 2003/04.

At the start of 2004/05, Jim Collis became manager and at this point fortunes on the pitch started to improve dramatically. In his first season, Albion finished 5th in the league, the following year a 3rd place finish meant promotion was missed by one point.

Jimmy Reid took over as manager in 2006, but his time was blighted by off the field problems. An attempted hostile takeover by dissident commit-tee members took a massive amount of money to fight. Then in Nov 2007, an attempted arson attack on the clubhouse caused a lot of damage.

Paul Marshall took over at the start of 2008/09, in his first season he played mostly local players and the team struggled and finished 17th.

In 2009/10, with an influx of a few new key players, Albion won the NCEL Division One title.

In 2010, Rob Northfield, took over as Chairman of Tadcaster Albion (2010) Ltd, and the club became a company limited by guarantee.

Albion finished fourth in their first season in the NCEL Premier Division and won the NCEL President’s Cup, beating Farsley AFC 5-1 in the final. That was followed by an 8th place finish in 2011/12 and 6th in 2012/13.

In the 2013/14 season Rob Northfield resigned a few days before the start of the season and i2i Sports Ltd agreed to take effective control of the club and company, with Matthew Gore becoming the new Chairman. In 2014/2015 the Brewers lead the NCEL Premier for most of the season, but a poor run of games in March led to them finally finishing in third.

An excellent run in the FA Vase saw them make history by making it through to the Quarter Final of the FA Vase where they drew a record breaking crowd of 1,307, but were narrowly beaten by Highworth Town.

The Brewers also broke many other records throughout the season – taking more than 200 fans away to Armthorpe Welfare on a cold Tuesday night where they went on to win 10-0.

At the end of the season, the club opted not to renew their contract with manager Paul Marshall, and two weeks later former Harrogate Railway boss Billy Miller was unveiled as the club’s new manager.

TAFC Directors’ Notes

A warm welcome to our opponents Barton Town Old Boys who have travelled here today from North Lincolnshire. Barton are once again enjoying a solid season in the NCEL Premier and come here today following a well-fought 4-3 defeat to Handsworth Parramore midweek. Though currently lying in 10th position, the Swans will have their sights firmly set on getting back into the upper echelons of the NCEL Premier, and like every one of our past meetings, we will have to fight hard to win maximum points.

The reverse fixture back in September was a very entertaining game, but unfortunately we lost the game 4-3 after a late penalty miss denied us a point. Hopefully today’s match will be equally entertaining, but with a better outcome for the Brewers!

Thanks to everyone who attended the funeral of our extremely popular barmaid Sonny Lang on Thursday. I’m sure you will agree it was a very emotional day, but it was lovely to be able to celebrate Sonny’s life with those that loved her the most. We were delighted that so many Tadcaster Albion players took time off work to attend the service. We often talk about us being a “family club”, but the sense of togetherness which has been felt in these past few weeks has been unbelievable. It really is testament to the many great people involved in this football club.

A memorial board will be placed on Sonny’s Bridge next week, so that all those crossing over the Wharfe will see her happy smiling face each day. We will also be naming our new bar area “Sonny’s Bar” to allow her memory to live on within the club and the town.

We were disappointed with Wednesday night’s 2-1 defeat away to Staveley Miners Welfare, though we appreciate that no team can win every single game. If you’d told us at Christmas that we would go on to win our next seven games, we would have been delighted. So it’s important that the players don’t get too disheartened. Today is a new day and a great chance for the team to get back to winning ways.

Next Saturday, we travel to 9th placed Pickering Town, which promises to be another excellent game. Our former manager Paul Marshall is having a strong season with the Pikes and there are a whole host of familiar faces within the Pickering squad, which is sure to make it a hotly contested game. Please keep an eye on our website and social media for matchday travel information.

We hope you enjoy this afternoon’s game. Let’s hope we can quickly return to winning ways. The i2i Sports DirectorsMatt Gore, James Gore & Kent Mayall

TAFC Manager’s Notes

Good afternoon and welcome to today’s game against Barton Town Old Boys. I have known Dave Anderson for a number of years now and envisage another tough test against a really strong side. We would like to wish Barton a safe journey home after today’s game and the best of luck for the remainder of this season.

We must turn our attention to Wednesday night. It turned out to be a really disappointing occasion when a vibrant Staveley team beat us on their own ground. There are no excuses and we feel on the night they got what they deserved. Setbacks are part of the game. The run the lads have been on over the past few months has really given us a great chance of achieving so much this season. We have taken 29 out of the last 36 points; a good return at any level. We are averaging 2.3 points per game and scoring 2.9 goals per game and conceding just 1.21 per game. If we can maintain this kind of form then there is no reason why we cannot be in with a great chance come the run in.

However, we should not lose sight of the fact that you cannot manufacture wins. Football is played by real people who make real mistakes. What’s very important is when the mistakes happen, we all need to get behind the team. The players need your support, which is a credit to you all at this level of football. They often talk about how much the fans have lifted them. The football field and indeed the

dugout is a lonely place when things are not quite going your way. A lift from the TSC can often mean the difference between success and failure. At Rainworth it was exceptional, even when we went a goal down, thank you.

The squad is heathy, less Matt Heath, who is still not quite right due to his injury sustained at Pontefract when in the referee’s opinion it was nothing more than coming together? I am in constant contact with Thomo and George and both are enjoying the additional game time they have been getting. The remainder of the squad are looking to bounce back today in what I am sure will be a very tough fixture.

Final mention this week must go to our fallen angel. It was with real sadness that we said our final goodbye this week to Sonny. Her funeral was very well attended and a real celebration of her short life, cruelly taken away too young. It was led by Paul Marshall and included a heartfelt tribute from our own Chairman Matthew Gore. On behalf of all the management, staff and players our thoughts are still with Marc and Anna this week. As Matt said at her funeral Sonny will always be a big part of the football club and forever in our hearts.

Yours in Sport, The Management #tadallover

Barton Town Old Boys Football Club was formed at the start of the 1995/96 season as a result of the amalgamation of the two longest established and most successful clubs in the North Lincolnshire town of Barton upon Humber, Barton Town FC and Barton Old Boys FC.

Barton Town had been in existence for well over 100 years, being formed in 1880, and playing out of their Marsh Lane ground, still the home of the new club, since 1927. “Town” was one of the founder members of the Lincolnshire League, winning it in 1960/61, before embarking on its “golden era” over the following two decades, initially in the Midlands League and then, particularly, in the Yorkshire League.

The club returned to the Lincolnshire League in the early 1980’s, winning the first division title in 1981/82. The “Swans” remained in the league for the next 10 years before dropping out for the usual off-field reasons, lack of help and finance. Barton Old Boys had been a member of the Scunthorpe and District League since 1959, eventually boasting two sides, in the first and second divisions. Over the ten year period from the mid-1990’s, “Old Boys” were arguably the most consistently successful team in the League, culminating in 1994/95 with the winning of all four major Scunthorpe League competitions, a first at the time.

In order to progress, the two clubs merged and started the 1995/96 season in the Lincolnshire League. After a disastrous start, the new Barton Town Old Boys finished a very creditable fourth and won the Lincolnshire County Senior “B” Cup for good measure. 1996/97 saw the team’s fortunes peak, winning the League and Challenge Cup double since when another County Cup triumph and two more Challenge Cup titles have been added to the list of honours. After five highly successful and enjoyable seasons in the Lincolnshire League, things were starting to turn stale, on and off the pitch, so the decision was made to move on, into the newly-formed Humber Premier League for the start of the 2000/01 season. Despite being the only side from south of the River Humber, the team performed well, finishing third. However, in order to gain a foothold on the Football Pyramid, the decision was made to move on again. Consequently, Barton Town Old Boys joined the Central Midlands League for the start of the 2001/02 season, bringing in Leigh Palin as first team coach to work alongside manager Peter Mitchell. The move paid off as the team finished runners up in the Premier Division, gaining automatic promotion to the Supreme Division for the start of the 2002/03 season.

After a difficult start to the following season, Leigh Palin left the club in October 2002 and was succeeded in January 2003 by Alex Irvine who joined the club as joint manager, working alongside ex Hull City and Brigg Town stalwart, player Neil Buckley. After flirting with relegation, the team put together an excellent run of nine wins from the last 12 games to finish a difficult season in a relatively comfortable 13th position. Irvine left the

club that summer, leaving Buckley in sole charge and it has been a story of further progress since then. 2003/04 saw the team finish in 7th place, separated from the top six by goal difference only.

There was further improvement in 2004/05 as Buckley, alongside long-serving Old Boys player Ian Durnian as assistant manager, saw the progress continue as the team claimed fourth spot, being denied a top three place only because of a draw in the final game of the season. Summer 2005 marked the installation of state of the art floodlights at the Marsh Lane ground and that, along with the securing of a long term sponsorship deal with Paul Vickers of Lindsey Relay, the local Euronics Centre, signalled the club’s intent both on and off the pitch prior to season 2005/06.

On the pitch, that intent was certainly realised as the title of Supreme Division Champions 2005/06 was added to the club’s list of honours. Along with the reserve side’s promotion to the top flight of the Humber Premier League, it was certainly a season to remember for all involved with the club.

Off the field, ground grading requirements prohibited promotion to the Northern Counties East League, the club‘s immediate ambition. As a result of that undoubted setback the club embarked on an extensive redevelopment programme, bringing in Paul Friskney as Chief Executive Officer to oversee the project which involved, amongst other things, turning the playing area and floodlights through 90°, new access, car-parking, changing rooms, clubhouse and stands. Supreme Division runners-up at the end of the 2005/07 season, the club was in the fortunate position of being considered once more for promotion to the Northern Counties East League and this time the facilities were not found wanting.

As a consequence, 2007/08 saw the club begin a whole new era, a perfect end to all the hard work put in, on and off the field, over the last few years and a fitting tribute to Denis Cox, who has been involved with Barton Town F.C. for over half a century. Ninth place in Division One was the outcome of the club’s first foray in the NCEL, a comfortable finish, albeit a little disappointing bearing in mind the team had been promotion contenders until around about the turn of the year, before loss of form, injuries and suspensions took their toll. A great run in the League Cup, which saw a number of Premier Division sides beaten at Marsh Lane en route to the semi-final provided some consolation for missing out.

After five successful seasons at the helm, late July 2008 saw the shock resignation of Neil Buckley, due to increased work commitments. Despite that blow, the club responded promptly, promoting coach Carl Stead to the hot-seat to work along-side existing assistant manager, Ian Durnian and newly-appointed player/coach, Craig Burdick to send out the message that it was very much “business as usual”.

The story of the 2008/09 season was another one of steady, if unspectacular, improvement.

A fifth place finish was the outcome, but, in a worrying case of history repeating itself, not before another dreadful dip in form in the new year, which saw the team slump from genuine promotion contenders to also-rans, some eleven points adrift of a guaranteed promotion slot. The disappointment of missing out was compounded by the loss of a number of key senior players who had been instrumental, with others, in the club’s success over the previous four seasons. The lure of football at a higher level, something that the club had signally failed to provide, proved to be too strong.

The 2009/10 season proved to be another season of two halves. In contrast to the previous two seasons, it began poorly, one or two bright spots notwithstanding, and, plagued by a terrible run of injuries, showed little sign of improvement as the season wore on. With the team marooned in mid-table in late November 2009 and finding it increasingly difficult to balance family and work commitments with football, Carl Stead resigned. Ian Durnian assumed the mantle of caretaker until a new management team of Dave Anderson and Mally Parker was appointed in early January 2010.

And so 2010 saw the start of a new chapter in the history of the club. The new faces had the desired effect. Players, both old and new, responded superbly to the promptings and demands of the new management duo, finishing the second half of the season in fine style. A sixth place finish, largely on the back of an unbeaten away run stretching back to January, bears testimony to the great strides forward made under the new regime. In their first full season at the helm, and in a huge testament to the management team and all the players involved, Anderson and Parker guided the side to promotion to the Premier Division, the highest level in the history of the club and achieved a full two seasons ahead of schedule. Not without a few nervous moments along the way, promotion was finally secured on the last day of a memorable season. After a fraught start, the first season in the top flight saw the club finish a creditable 11th, helped in no small way by a seven match winning streak, part of a longer unbeaten run in all competitions during November and December. The team also made it through to two cup finals, the County Senior Trophy and the President‘s Cup and although missing out, narrowly, in both, they too marked a significant step forward.

Season 2012/13 saw the club achieve its main aim, that of consolidating and improving on the previous seasons mid-table finish. Hovering amongst the top six, and on merit, for much of the campaign, a disappointing late run of seven league games without a win, although countered by an equally fine run-in of seven games unbeaten, saw the club finish in eighth place, still a very encouraging achievement. The 2013 award of the FA’s Charter Standard and the development of a strong working partnership with established local junior setup, Barton United FC, signalled the club’s future intent, to become a true ‘community club’ by nurturing and developing local youngsters fromboth north and south of the Humber with a viewto eventually blooding them in the first team alongside more established players from further afield.

TAFC Match Preview

Tadcaster Albion v Barton Town Old Boys FC24th February 2016.

This afternoon we welcome the fans, players and officials of Barton Town Old Boys. On Tuesday evening, they went down to a 4-3 defeat away at Handsworth Parramore. The following evening, The Brewers went down 2-1 at Staveley Miners Welfare, but we remain 2 points clear at the top of the NCEL Premier table. Staveley MW are now 10 points off the top of the table from the same games played, so they will have a big say in what happens from their remaining 14 games.

Barton Town Old Boys are currently in 10th place in the NCEL Premier League with 48 points from 27 games played. Away from home, they have won

7 of their 14 games played with one game drawn. The League game at Barton in September was won by The Swans 4-3 with The Brewers goals coming from Nick Black, Paddy Miller and a Jimmy Beadle penalty kick. Both league games last season were won 3-2 by the home team. Their leading goalscorer in all competitions is Gareth Owen with 15 goals.

Elsewhere today, Handsworth Parramore play at Garforth Town, Worksop Town and Bridlington Town meet at Worksop whilst Cleethorpes Town travel to Staveley Miners Welfare. I expect a close exciting game with The Brewers coming out 3-2 winners to remain top of the table.

With further ground improvements being undertaken in the close-season, 2013/14 saw the first team looking for further consolidation by establishing itself as a top six side. And, to the immense credit of players and management alike, the team exceeded all expectations to claim the runners-up spot behind worthy winners, Brighouse Town. An increasingly youthful and very closely-knit squad created, in the process, a club record 23 game unbeaten league run stretching over a full five months during which, and for the first ever time in the club’s relatively short history, the team hit top spot, mid-run, in late December, staying there over the Christmas and New Year turn before eventually being pegged back.

Season 2014/15 started with the club under no illusions. To have any realistic chance of improving on the previous season’s marvel-lous second place finish, it was vitally important a good, solid start was made. It was a star that failed, dismally, to materialise as the first four league games saw four defeats and the club bot-tom of the table come mid-September. Hardly

the start everyone was looking and hoping for. A superb midweek win at eventual champions, Shaw Lane Aquaforce, changed all that , belatedly kick- starting the season and acting as a catalyst for another of the team’s signature runs which saw just two points dropped in a stretch of nine league games unbeaten, hoisting them into the top eight, a position from which they rarely slipped, in the process. The eventual fifth place finish was, in its way, on a par with 2013/14’s second place, given the awful start made and the fiercely competitive nature of the NCEL’s Premier Division, arguably as tough a (Football Pyramid) step five league as any in the country.

Away from the playing side a club record league attendance of 517 for the Good Friday local derby with Cleethorpes Town, albeit for a Groundhop UKfixture, showed what was possible when the club gets it right.

2015/16 sees the club, now well established at this level, looking to continue its growth, both on and off the field. On the field, that meansaspi-

rations for another top six finish with perhaps the added bonus of a good cup run or two, something that has been disappointingly lacking these last few years, despite or possibly because of the undoubted league success. Off the field, and this is naturally linked to how things go on it, it remains vitally important for the long term benefit of the club that attendances and associated revenues at The Euronics Ground continue to grow.

Get these things right and one thing remains certain. And that is, the future of Barton Town Old Boys is still very bright.

Head-2-Head Barton Town Old Boys FC By Ian Tyssen

In the 15 Northern Counties East Football League (NCEL) between the two teams, there have been no fewer than 70 goals scored and only one clean sheet. So, we should expect plenty of goalmouth action this afternoon.

The first NCEL encounters between the clubs took place in the 2007/08 season, with Albion winning the first meeting 2-1 in Lincolnshire. At Ings Lane, a few months later, the Brewers came back from being 0-3 down at half time to draw 3-3.

In the 2008/09 season, a Darren Wilson hat-trick secured a 3-2 victory for Albion. The Old Boys goals were scored by Gareth Barlow, who has scored a total of seven goals against Tadcaster.

The Brewers’ heaviest defeat came in the 2011/12 campaign, when a 1-0 lead, after five minutes, turned into a 1-5 loss at Tadcaster. One year later, Albion came back from being 0-1 behind, after

20 minutes, to win 5-1. The Brewers also won 4-1 at the Euronics Ground in the 2012/13 season.

A crowd of 501 at the i2i Stadium watched Albion win 2-1 in the penultimate game of the 2013/14 season. Despite goals from Carl Stewart and Nick Thompson earning three points for the home side, Barton Town Old Boys finished second in the NCEL Premier Division - one place ahead of the Brewers.

Last season, each team registered a 3-2 victory in their home game. Josh Greening, Calum Ward and George Bissett scored the goals in front of 286 fans at Tadcaster. At the Euronics Ground last March, Liam Ormsby’s penalty and an 87th minute Andy Milne equaliser were cancelled out by an 89th minute winner from Scott Phillips.

In September 2015, Nick Black put Albion 1-0 up in the first minute at

Barton-upon-Humber. In front of a crowd of 181, the home team then turned the game around to lead 3-1 before Paddy Miller and Jimmy Beadle scored to level the scores. Once again, Scott Phillips scored a late winner to bring about a 3-4 loss for Tadcaster.

The Brewers have won seven of the 15 NCEL matches between the club, with there also being four draws and four defeats.

There have also been two ties in the President’s Cup. Albion won 4-2 on penalties, after a 0-0 draw, in the first round of 2010/11. In the following season, the semi final was won 1-0 by The Swans.

NCEL 2015-16 TAFC v Liversedge FC

The Brewers Return Home With A Win Tadcaster Albion were back at the i2i Stadium for the first time in 73 days and returned with a win against bottom side Liversedge.

The Sedge made it difficult for Taddy and battled well but a perfectly executed free-kick by Liam Ormsby right on the stroke of half-time gave The Brewers a slender lead at the break. The visitors levelled at the start of the second half with a free-kick of their own, brilliantly struck by Tom Jackson.

Taddy wore their opponents down in the end and regained the lead in the 67th minute as Liam Ormsby netted his second, his penalty kick was saved but he was on hand to smash in the rebound. The Brewers netted two goals in the final three minutes to put gloss over the victory; firstly Carl Stewart scored his first of the season with a well struck drive and then Jimmy Beadle headed in from a Conor Sellars corner.

It was an emotional day all round with the former TAFC barmaid Sonny Lang sadly passing away in the week. It was a nice touch by both captains to present Sonny’s mum Anna with flowers as well as holding a minute’s applause and playing her favourite song ‘Right Here’ by Jess Glynne.

Manager Billy Miller made two changes to the side that won late at Bridlington last week with Josh Barrett and Carl Stewart handed starts in place of Adam Baker and Nick Black who dropped to the substitute’s bench.

It had been ages since we had graced the i2i Stadium and boy did it feel good to be back; seeing the clubhouse and ground packed as ever, 512 in attendance to be precise which was a sensational turnout, we thank you all for your support.

Taddy got the match underway and were very nearly one up inside the first 60 seconds. Josh Barrett’s pull back from the right was met by Jimmy Beadle but the skipper’s shot was saved by Christian Thewlis in the Sedge goal.

The visitors’ first attack sent some nerves in Taddy’s back line as Rhys Davis and Regan Fish just couldn’t create that half a yard of space to get their shot off and Jordan Armstrong eventually cleared.

The Brewers were looking to take an early lead and settle some possible homecoming nerves however they spurned another good chance in the tenth minute. Tom Brook failed to clear which incidentally dropped into Josh Barrett’s path but the attacker blazed over from close range.

The Brewers were pushing extremely hard in the opening minutes to try and blow Liversedge away and put the game to bed as early as possible but three minutes later Thewlis denied Beadle once more. Barrett with the cross again from the right, Beadle with the downward header but again Thewlis got down well.

Jason Mycoe doesn’t get many chances at goal with him sitting deep in the midfield but he had plenty of space on this occasion, tried his luck but the strike was straight at Thewlis.

As the clock turned on 23 minutes, all in attendance applauded for the 23 year old Sonny which was another nice moment.

Whilst this was going on Taddy came close once again to breaking the deadlock, Jonathan Greening curled in a free-kick to which Beadle headed just over, again.

Liversedge were containing Taddy so far and somewhat frustrating the home side but The Brewers thought they had a penalty just after the half hour mark. Josh Barrett was scythed down by full-back Mark Lumb right on the line, it was extremely tight but a free-kick was given. The free-kick was again clipped in by Greening and again, Beadle was the man who got his head to it but Thewlis was equal to it.

A minute later and the visitors could have easily been reduced to ten men. Liversedge’s Brandon Kane may have been a little fortunate to stay on the field after going through the back of Barrett, just a yellow card issued though.

Right on the stroke of half-time it was still goalless as Carl Stewart was brought down on the edge of the area. Liam Ormsby stood menacingly over the ball and curled it beautifully up and over the wall and into the back of the net giving Christian Thewlis no chance this time. Liam pointed straight over to Anna, that one was definitely for Sonny.

Half-Time: Tadcaster Albion 1-0 Liversedge

Into the second half and Carl Stewart came close to ending his goal drought two minutes in as he tried to cryuff flick in Armstrong’s cross but Thewlis kept Carl waiting.

That was a half chance for Carl Stewart but a couple of minutes later he had a golden chance to break his duck for the season. A mistake at the back allowed Stewart to run clean through on goal but the striker’s shot was stopped by the body of Thewlis.

Credit to Liversedge however, they weren’t playing like a side at the bottom of the league, they were digging deep and giving The Brewers some things to think about and in the 59th minute, they drew level. The Sedge equalised from a free-kick of their own, Tom Jackson with a fantastic left-footed strike from

the right hand side which curled over Stevens and into the far corner.

This spurred Taddy on to regain the lead as quickly as possible and just eight minutes later, they got the perfect chance to do so as Tom Brook was adjudged to have handled the ball after Stewart flicked the ball upwards. Liam Ormsby was the man to take the penalty, he struck it well but Christian Thewlis did superbly to save the spot-kick however Ormsby smashed in the rebound much to his relief.

Regan Fish looked the brightest of the bunch for The Sedge and the wide man came close to equalising once again after half volleying just over the mark.

Gary Stevens wasn’t given much to do in the Tadcaster goal but he had to be alert when Brandon Kane struck sweetly from 33 yards as Stevens tipped onto the crossbar.

The away side were having a decent spell as we entered the final 15 minutes and that man Fish was causing problems again. The midfielder’s low bobbly shot was well dealt with by Stevens on a pitch which was severely cutting up as the match wore old.

The Brewers sealed the three points in the final minutes by scoring two late goals. Carl Stewart finally ended his goal drought and netted his first of the season with a neat finish from Beadle’s through ball. All in attendance and all the yellow shirts were buzzing for Carl which was nice to see.

Taddy then scored a fourth goal on their return to the i2i Stadium as Conor Sellars’ floated corner was met by Jimmy Beadle who rose highest and powerfully headed into the back of the net.

There was one final piece of action as Liam Ormsby stood over a free-kick right on the edge of the penalty area and went for the opposite corner to his goal but Thewlis denied the midfielder his hat-trick.

Liversedge battled well and didn’t look like a side struggling at the wrong end of the table but in the end Tadcaster had just too much for them and returned home with the three points on an emotional day at the i2i stadium.

By Jay TaylorNCEL 2015-16 Rainworth Miners Welfare FC v TAFC

Greening Double Catapults Tad To The Top A neat Josh Greening finish inside eight minutes cancelled out Matty Sykes’ early penalty for the home side.

Adam Baker put Taddy in front ten minutes before half-time and a second from Josh Greening on the hour mark sealed the win for The Brewers in a perfect away performance.

Manager Billy Miller made two changes to the side that beat Liversedge last week with Adam Baker and Conor Sellars promoted to the starting eleven in place of Josh Barrett and Carl Stewart.

Tadcaster however got off to the worst possible start as the home side were awarded a penalty in the second minute after Gary Stevens clattered into Liam Theakstone. Matty Sykes stepped up and fired the spot kick into the bottom right corner just out of Stevens’ reach.

Five minutes later and The Brewers were back on level terms. Jason Mycoe did brilliantly to shrug off Liam Nelthorpe and play a perfect reverse ball through to Josh Greening who composed himself and slid under goalkeeper Sam Leigh.

After a frantic opening ten minutes, the match then calmed down allowing both sides to settle. With 14 minutes gone Jimmy Beadle was back to his optimistic self once again trying his luck from all of 35 yards but Leigh was equal to the attempt.

Both sides were having plenty of possession with many meaningful attacks as after 25 minutes The Wrens tested Gary Stevens in the Taddy goal. Gregg Anderson cleared a cross but only as far as full-back Connor Smythe who struck sweetly on the volley to which Stevens saved well.

As the rain started bucketing down in Rainworth, Taddy completed the turnaround and took the lead with ten minutes to go until the break. Jordan Armstrong did superbly to beat Sykes on the right touchline and fire in a deep cross which flicked off Brad Wilson’s head to an unmarked Adam Baker at the back post who couldn’t miss from seven yards out.

Tadcaster were looking to go into half-time with a two goal cushion and came close as once again full-back Jordan Armstrong bombed down the right side and ended up in behind and his dinked cross was met by Beadle whose flick was deflected over.

With two minutes to go until the break, Josh Greening nearly made it three for the visitors with what would have undoubtedly been one of the goals of the season. A defensive header by Rainworth flew in the air in the direction to Josh Greening who followed the ball out of the sky and went for the acrobatic bicycle kick which swerved a matter of inches wide of the upright.

Half-Time: Rainworth Miners Welfare 1-2 Tadcaster Albion

Thankfully the rain stopped just in time for the second half to which the home side started on the front foot.

The home side came close to making it a Desmond at the start of the second half as Matty Sykes dinked in behind to the onrushing Nelthorpe but Stevens charged off his line to brilliantly thwart the midfielder.

The Wrens were pushing hard to get back into the contest whereas Taddy weren’t rushing things in terms of netting a third goal, they knew chances would come about. However, Rainworth had another clear sight of goal in the 52nd minute as right-back Ricky Hanson got behind Liam Ormsby and fired low into the danger area to Matt Thompson but the striker’s heavy touch at the most crucial time allowed Anderson to hook clear.

Credit has to be given to Rainworth, they were giving it a great go but once again The Brewers’ defence were second to none. Captain Hanson with the cross in from the right to Theakstone but Milne and Anderson both launched themselves towards the ball and a mixture of both stopped the fierce strike.

However, with all that being said, Rainworth’s hard work was all undone just after the hour mark as Tadcaster took a 3-1 lead. Jonathan Greening’s firm pass was superbly flicked in behind the Wrens’ defence by Jimmy Beadle sending panic to the home side. The clever flick was latched onto by Josh Greening who touched the ball over goalkeeper Sam Leigh but it seemed as though the attack was over as Matt Plant covered but the defender miscued completely as well as bringing Greening to the ground. Conor Sellars was quickest to retrieve the ball on the by-line and terrifically back-heeled back into the six yard box where Josh Greening picked himself up and rolled the ball into the empty net.

With fifteen minutes remaining, the home side were still giving Tadcaster things to think about, especially Gary Stevens in goal as substitute Declan Brewin chested and volleyed from 25 yards to which Stevens did well to tip over the mark.

Rainworth had to throw the kitchen sink at Taddy with ten minutes left on the watch and the problem that this provides is the spaces for The Brewers when going forward. This was certainly evident in the 82nd minute as Adam Baker struck inches wide of the target after Josh Greening slotted the attacker in.

Jason Mycoe and in particularly Jonathan Greening were absolutely bossing things in midfield, an all round complete performance from the former Manchester United man. Never once looked troubled on the ball, always kept things moving, was always an option and working in tandem sensationally with the ferocious Mycoe.

Stevens was excelling for Tadcaster in Nottinghamshire as the stopper pulled off another magnificent save to keep out Thompson’s rapidly travelling strike from all of 30 yards.

As the match reached its final stages, Taddy looked to put gloss over the victory just like last week against Liversedge and Josh Greening came close to completing his hat-trick but Leigh palmed the shot in the air.

As the match opened up more and more, the amount of chances for both sides were totting up as in the 86th minute the home side couldn’t believe Stevens had saved another one. Matt Thompson controlled the ball on the edge of the penalty area and guided into Liam Theakstone whose deft touch was equalled to by the faintest of touches from Stevens, three white shirts had hands on their heads in disbelief.

Straight back up the other end for one final attack as Greening looked to score his hat-trick goal but even after two bites at the cherry, the striker was blocked out on both occasions.

However that wasn’t important, the three points was the most important factor of all as Tadcaster Albion go clear at the top of the league with Worksop, Handsworth and Cleethorpes all dropping points.

By Jay TaylorNCEL 2015-16 Staveley Miners Welfare FC v TAFC

Lively Staveley End The Brewers’ Winning Run Tadcaster Albion suffered just their fourth loss of the campaign as an energetic Staveley side came from behind in the second half to take all three points. Taddy went into the break a goal to the good courtesy of a Jason Mycoe thunderbolt from 30 yards. The home side did however have two chances to level from the penalty spot in the first half but amazingly squandered both. Staveley did complete the turnaround however with nine minutes to go after goals from Kieran Watson and Courtney Hastings saw The Trojans move up into sixth place in the NCEL Premier Division.

Manager Billy Miller named an unchanged side to the one that saw off Rainworth on Saturday as The Brewers looked to win their eighth consecutive match.

It was Taddy who started the brighter of the two teams, Adam Baker and Conor Sellars both firing narrowly off target in the opening ten minutes.

The Brewers’ good spell then became a great spell after eleven minutes as they took an early lead. Taddy were ever so quietly knocking at the door of Staveley however, midfielder Jason Mycoe took matters into his own hands and knocked down that door with some panache. Conor Sellars nudged the ball backwards into the path of Mycoe who took one touch to get it out of his feet and then simply let fly. An absolute rocket from all of 30 yards, nothing Nick Siddons could do about it in the Staveley goal. There were certainly flashbacks to the goal he scored at Worksop Town, very similar. Staveley then had the perfect opportunity to respond almost immediately as Andy Milne was adjudged to have brought down an onrushing attacker in the penalty area. It’s fair to say that Milne was absolute seething with the decision, he was convinced it was a clear dive. Courtney Hastings stepped up and sent Gary Stevens the wrong way but unfortunately for the watching on home fans, the striker rolled the penalty wide of the mark.

Despite the missed penalty, The Trojans only seemed to grow in confidence and spurned another good chance to level in the 26th minute. Stevens charged out to the by-line but could only clear to Steve Carty who couldn’t resist the first time shot which was cut out by Anderson but only to be

picked up by Hastings whose first strike was well blocked by Milne and his follow up effort bobbled wide.

Taddy were still huffing and puffing and getting into good areas in the final third but the final ball always seemed to be a problem. Taddy did however carve out a brilliant chance to double their lead just shy of the half hour mark. Conor Sellars superbly picked out Jimmy Beadle from just inside his own half and the Tadcaster skipper controlled and volleyed ferociously but Siddons did well to keep the strike out.

With ten minutes to go until the break, The Trojans were awarded a second penalty kick of the half. Two penalties in one match is a fairly rare feat in itself but two penalties for the same side in one half is even rarer. Winger Adam Scott was played through on the right hand side and as soon as Gary Stevens came out and Scott went to ground there was only ever going to be one decision made by the referee, penalty.

Kieran Watson was the man to step up and try his luck from the penalty spot this time and incredibly this one was also squandered with Gary Stevens making amends by saving well down to his right. Speaking of rarities, I wonder how many times two penalties have been given to the same side in one half and have both been missed.

With half-time fast approaching, substitute Jamie Brown struck comfortably over for Staveley and Jimmy Beadle’s flick on was agonizingly too pacey for Josh Greening to latch onto and somehow The Brewers led at the break.

Half-Time: Staveley Miners Welfare 0-1 Tadcaster Albion

Moving into the second half, it was still incredibly difficult to see which way the game was going to go. Taddy as we know have always got a goal in them but the home side certainly looked a threat with the effervescent Courtney Hastings up front proving to be a real nuisance.

Taddy had the first half chance of the second 45 as a long ball forward by Gregg Anderson was misjudged by Richard Mintoft and pounced upon by Josh Greening who let it bounce twice before firing wildly over.

The Trojans did eventually level just eight minutes into the second half as Taddy were stretched at the back and were indeed punished as Adam Scott threaded in Kieran Watson who slotted it low and underneath Gary Stevens to set up an intriguing final thirty five minutes.

Taddy looked to bounce straight back as Jimmy Beadle sent Josh Greening in behind down the right hand side with only Mintoft to beat however the forward chose to slow things down and wait for support only for his cross to thwarted.

With fifteen minutes to go, both sides were most certainly not playing for a draw, it was relentless end to end football leaving large gaps in behind both defences which made up for an exciting finale.

The Brewers were looking to nudge back in front to solidify top spot in the division by going five points clear and they almost did just that through Josh Greening. Jonathan Greening picked out his younger brother who guided goal wards with his laces from 12 yards but Nick Siddons was equal to the strike and managed to push away.

Staveley were probably looking the most likely to take the lead with twelve minutes to go and Jordan Armstrong proved simply why it is so crucial to have men on the posts at set-pieces. The home side fired a corner out to the edge of the penalty area where Jamie Brown stood completely unmarked and Brown side footed first time only to be headed cleared off the line by Armstrong.

With nine minutes to go Staveley took the lead and had completed the turnaround. Gregg Anderson’s heavy touch gave possession back to the home side as Jamie Brown was allowed to carry the ball down the pitch for 40 yards to then play in Courtney Hastings who rifled low and hard past Stevens at the near post. The goal was Hastings’ 20th for the campaign.

With the amount of pressure that Staveley were piling on, you’d have to say that the lead was thoroughly deserved. The Brewers never really got out of first gear and struggled to carve out clear opportunities against a well organised Staveley side.

The young Trojans were causing Taddy problems all over and in the end held on for the victory, damming Tadcaster to another defeat at Inkersall Road and also just their fourth league loss of the season.

Twitter:

Paul Clayton: “Disappointing performance tonight by Tadcaster Albion, best team won. Always going to be setbacks, need a reaction from all on Saturday.”

Paul Clayton: “Tadcaster Albion still top, with games in hand on most around us. 14 games left, still in our hands. Massive final third of the season to come!”

Jay Taylor: “Disappointing result tonight but its done and dusted now, we must react on Saturday with a win! #ataw”

Jason Dunne: “Been a difficult night on and off the pitch tonight for Tadcaster Albion”

Facebook:

Dan Clow: “These things happen and can’t win them all. Go again Saturday and start another long undefeated run”

Ian Clark: “That was the best performance against us by any side in the league all season! Fair play to Staveley they have a very good team and a really impressive set up and they are sure to be title contenders next season. The good thing is that all of our challengers still have to visit there and if Staveley play anything like

as well as they did against us they will take points off all of them. We’re still top of the league on merit and we just need to start the next unbeaten run on Saturday now.”

Captain Chickers: “Unlucky, was always a potential banana skin, let’s not forget what a good set up Staveley are. We are still top, level on games played with Handsworth and 2 points up on them, from the write up the points could’ve gone either way. Dust off and start again Sat-urday. The likes of Staveley will take points from other teams, sure the boys know what to do on Saturday…. UP THE BREWERS!”

Jason Dunne: “It didn’t click for us tonight. Bad preparation for the game and very cold. Just one of those nights.”

For the 2009/10 season, the Northern Counties East Football League (NCEL) reduced in size from 39 to 38 clubs. The Premier Division continued to have 20 members and Division One dropped to 18 teams.

At the end of the previous season, Mickleover Sports were promoted from the Premier Division to the Northern Premier League (NPL) Division One South. Eccleshill United were relegated from the Premier Division to Division One, with Scarborough Athletic and Rainworth Miners Welfare moving in the opposite direction. There were no new clubs in the NCEL.

The Brewers’ pre-season started with a 1-3 loss at home against Scarborough Town, who had Josh Greening among their goalscorers.

The league season started in fine style for Albion, when they picked up five straight victories. This included 5-0 against Glasshoughton Welfare and 4-1 at Hemsworth Miners Welfare. The winning start came to a halt with a 1-3 loss at Grimsby Borough, who would finish the season next to bottom.

2009 came to an end with four wins and three draws from seven games. At home, Pontefract Collieries, who would finish in fifth place, were beaten 3-0 and bottom club Worsbrough Bridge Athletic lost 0-4, whilst Staveley Miners Welfare, who ended the season in fourth position, were beaten 4-1 away. The final game of the calendar year resulted in a 4-4 draw against Rossington Main, in front of 41 fans - the lowest home crowd of the season. They witnessed four goals in the first eight minutes and a Darren Brandon hat-trick for Tad.

The new year brought a downturn in fortunes for the Brewers, with late goals being conceded at title rivals Brighouse Town (a 1-2 loss) and Leeds Carnegie (a 1-1 draw). More points were dropped against strugglers Grimsby Borough, who drew 1-1 at Tadcaster.

Thankfully, normal service resumed and six draw and a draw came in the next seven games. Staveley Miners Welfare were beaten 1-0 and there were late winning goals against Bottesford Town (90 minutes), Askern Villa (85) and Teversal (81). A battling point was picked up at Barton Town Old Boys, despite being 0-2 down after six minutes.

A 1-3 reverse came at Pontefract Collieries before another excellent run of results - five wins and a draw. Big victories were achieved at home over Appleby Frodingham (5-0), Eccleshill United (4-0), thanks to a Mike Braithwaite hat-trick,

and at Worsbrough Bridge Athletic (3-0).

The Brewers were battling with Brighouse Town for the title and a 1-3 defeat against their rivals, in front of 141 fans at Ings Lane, left Albion three points behind with just three games to play - all at home.

A 1-1 draw was picked up against free-scoring Leeds Carnegie and a 4-0 win over Yorkshire Amateur, setting up a must-win final game against Hemsworth Miners Welfare.

With Brighouse Town having finished all their games, the Brewers were two points adrift. So, a 2-1 victory, thanks to goals from Danny Pitts (65 minutes) and Mike Braithwaite (85 minutes), saw the title come to Tadcaster.

The Brewers finished top of the league - one point above Brighouse Town and two ahead of Leeds Carnegie, who had three points deducted - with 74 points from 34 games and a +43 goal difference.

The average attendance for NCEL Division One games at Ings Lane was 100, helped by a 452 crowd for that crucial final game against Hemsworth Miners Welfare.

As well as success in the league, the Brewers enjoyed several victories in cup ties - all against fellow NCEL Division One clubs.

In the FA Vase, there were qualifying round wins at Glasshoughton Welfare (2-1) and Brighouse Town (3-2) before a 0-1 loss at Northern League Division Two club Whickham, after extra time, in the first round.

Hemsworth Miners Welfare (4-2 after extra time) and Rossington Main (5-4 on penalties, after a 3-3 draw) were beaten in the Wilkinson Sword Trophy. Bottesford Town then ended Albion’s involvement with a 2-1 away win.

In the League Cup, Rossington Main and AFC Emley were both defeated 2-1 but Premier Division high-flyers Armthorpe Welfare beat the Brewers 5-1 in the fourth round.

There was a quick exit for Albion in the West Riding County Cup, with a 2-3 extra time loss against NPL Premier Division champions Guiseley.

Darren Brandon finished the season as the top goalscorer for the club, with 17 league and cup goals. Graeme Whitehead (12), Kevin Smith (11) and Mike Braithwaite (10) also reached double figures.

Our U21s play in the West Riding County FA Floodlit League (Central). During the 2014/15 season, they also made it to the Semi Final of the West Riding Floodlit League Cup. The players, who are aged 16 and over, train between 1 and 10 hours a week and also compete in regular development friendlies. Many of these friendlies are against youth teams from local professional clubs such as Leeds United and York City – giving each of our players a unique insight into the UK’s football system. Our U21 coaches Mike Morton and Simon Collins not only have their FA Level 3 (UEFA B) qualification, but they also have experience of coaching with professional clubs such as Manchester City and Leeds United. For more information on our U21 set up, please email [email protected].

Our Under 19 team is a newly formed side, which has been set up to help local talented players develop and hopefully progress into the Under 21s and the Tadcaster Albion first team. Players are all aged 16 and over. Coach Rich Taylor has coached in the USA and has also had a spell at Leeds United.
