Barnes, Mohr & Mitchell to be honored by the PBA

Eighteen-time PBA Tour champion Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas; two-time PBA50 Player of the Year Ron Mohr of North Las Ve-gas, and the late Don Mitchell, a renowned bowling center owner and PBA host from In-dianapolis, have been elected to the Profes-sional Bowlers Associ-ation Hall of Fame.

These men will be inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame on Sat-urday, Feb. 17, at the Marriott North in Indi-anapolis as part of the Go Bowling! PBA 60th Anniversary Celebra-tion.

Chris Barnes, 47, will be inducted into the Superior Performance category. He is one of fi ve players to win both PBA Rookie and Player of the Year honors. He is one of six players to complete the PBA Tri-ple Crown (2005 U.S. Open, 2006 PBA Tour-nament of Champions and 2011 PBA World Championship), and he ranked among the top 10 in PBA earnings for 16 consecutive seasons.

Ron Mohr who will be inducted into the Superior Performance category, has estab-lished one of the most successful track records in PBA50 Tour history. He ranked among the top 10 in every key sta-tistical category every year he has competed as a “senior” player.

Don Mitchell will be honored for his Meri-torious Service to the PBA. He succumbed to cancer in 2012 at the age of 80, went from

managing a small bowl-ing center in Indianap-olis to developing the Royal Pin Leisure Cen-ters chain, which has hosted dozens of show-case events at all levels of bowling.

Its centerpiece, Wood-land Lanes in Indianap-olis – has hosted every major championship the PBA has offered, and in 2018 will again be the focal point of the PBA Tour when it hosts the Go Bowling! PBA 60th Anniversary Clas-sic, February 13-18.

Liz Johnson changesPBA Bowling History

Reno, Nev. – Three-time reigning Profes-sional Women’s Bowl-ing Association Player of the Year Liz Johnson of Palatine, Illinois, has made a career out of producing historic moments on the lanes, and now she’s added arguably the greatest accomplishment of her historic career.

Johnson defeated An-thony Pepe of Elmhurst, New York, 220-206, to win the Profession-al Bowlers Association Chameleon Champi-onship on Saturday at the National Bowling Stadium to become the second woman to win a PBA Tour title.

She joins Kelly Ku-lick of Union, New Jer-sey, who won the 2010 PBA Tournament of Champions, as the only women to capture vic-tories on the PBA Tour. The PBA fi rst allowed women to compete in 2004 after the PWBA abruptly went on hiatus in 2003.

“It feels absolutely amazing,” said John-

son, who also fi nished 14th in the PBA World Championship this week in Reno. “It’s of-fi cially one of the best bowling days of my life and probably the icing on the cake as far as my career goes. I’ve been very lucky to have the career that I’ve had. I never thought having the chance to win a PBA title would come when it did. It’s been an awesome journey.”

The event was lives-treamed online through ESPN 3 (WatchESPN.com) and the WatchES-PN app. The show will be broadcast on ESPN on Dec. 17 at 1 p.m. Eastern.

Sammi Smith also found the right line to strikes for a 247 game. Kevin Cox lined up great and consistent games of 256, 255 and 249 to blast him to a 760 house high series. From a convention and tourism perspec-tive, the infl ux of all these bowlers plus fam-ily and friends provides a large economic boost to the host city during the course of the event.

The tournament is the highlight of the bowl-ing season for USBC female members. It's a vacation as well as an opportunity to compete in one of the sport's most prestigious tour-naments.

The entry fee is $44 per event, per bowler. All-events is option-al and is $8. The total cost is $140 per bowler, which allows them to compete in team, dou-bles, singles and all-events.

Team squads are held at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., and doubles/singles squads will be at 8 a.m., 12:30 p.m.
