Profiles for all disciplines start on page four; the Social Sciences begin on page eight.

We feature the Fitch Foundation’s opportunities for historic preservation. Sage Advice charts out suggested timelines for grant applications.

As usual, we include recent News, followed by profiles of opportunities coming up in the month of May. Reminders for deadlines over the next six months can be found beginning on page twelve, grouped by discipline.

Like the Fellowships Calendar in our last newsletter, you can download the whole year’s Grants Calendar from the website and sort by due date, discipline, funder, or grant type.

Internal grant deadlines have now passed for this academic year. Be on the lookout for next year’s deadlines on the Internal Grants page of the Barnard website. If you have colleagues abroad whom you would like to bring to Barnard under the Weiss Fellowships for Visiting International Scholars Program, please see information here.

For assistance in finding grants for an upcoming project or to begin an application process, please contact Kari Steeves or any one of us in Institutional Funding and Sponsored Research. As always, feel free to send us comments, requests, or suggestions here.

Fitch Foundation

Spring is finally arriving and, with that, weather amenable to appreciating scenic landscapes and historic areas, so it is fitting that we’re featuring the James Marston Fitch Charitable Foundation which, among other work, supports those working in preservation and landscape architecture.

The Fitch Foundation was founded in 1989 by James Marston Fitch, who led Columbia’s first graduate program in architectural preservation. The foundation considers itself the “vanguard of historic preservation practice and theory” by providing mid-career grants to professionals working in the fields of preservation, landscape architecture, urban design, environmental planning, decorative arts, architectural design, and architectural history. Their reach is certainly interdisciplinary, as is represented in their range of available grants and fellowships.

The Fitch Mid-Career Fellowship awards research grants of up to $15,000 to professionals with an academic background, professional experience, and an established identity in one of the foundation’s fields of interest. Projects are chosen that will “make a meaningful contribution to the academic and or/professional field of historic preservation in the United States” and that demonstrate “innovative thinking, original research, and creative problem solving or design.” Applications are generally due in the fall.

The Richard L. Blinder Award is presented biennially to an architect or related field for a proposal exploring architecture or preservation. “The proposal may focus on a real project or it may be a polemical exercise; in either case, originality is highly valued. The proposal must advance architectural preservation in the United States. The product can be graphic, text-based or a combination of both and must be able to be shared with the architecture and preservation community.” The award is for up to $15,000. Applications for 2020 funding will open in the fall.

The Samuel H. Kress Fellowship provides research grants of up to $15,000 for research relating to “appreciation, interpretation, preservation, study and teaching of European art, architecture and related disciplines from antiquity to the early 19th century, in the context of historic preservation in the United States.” Applications will open in the fall.

The foundation also organizes occasional symposia on the topics of preservation and conservation. Past topics include “Conservation Law: New York City and the Nation,” “The Accidental Preservationist,” and “Design and Heritage.” For videos, papers, and more information about future products, check out their website at fitchfoundation.org.

Sage Advice for Competitive Proposals

Return to table of contents

It’s All About Timing.

On these pages, we have conveyed countless bromides from advice columnists to “start early” when applying for grants. “It’s never too early…,” “Don’t wait for the last minute…,” “Plan ahead…,” or the less ambitious “be on time.” Since “early” to one applicant may be “OMG I’M SO BEHIND!” to another, let’s look at some numbers.

And in case you’re thinking of starting tomorrow, consider this:

Here’s another nifty timeline, found in LinkedIn SlideShare from a Grant Writing Skills Workshop in Paki-stan. The workshop leaders do not give a unit to correspond to the numbers, but grantseekers can use the numbers to portion time. Click to slide five. www.slideshare.net/eAfghanAg/grant-writing-skills-workshop

The National Science Foundation provides this guideline in its Proposal Development Timeline. https://circl.sri.com/archive/2015/webinars/nsf/docs/ProposalTimeline.pdf Part of the Center for In-novative Research in Cyberlearning’s Proposal Resources: https://circlcenter.org/resources/nsf-cyberlearning-proposal-resources/

From the NIH New eRA website (Electronic Research Administration) “We are pleased to announce the soon to be launched, completely redesigned and upgraded eRA website! Currently scheduled for release in April, the new design represents a year-long effort to provide you with better information, better navigation, and improved access to resources.“ https://era.nih.gov/ Smaller Pots for Women New study of NIH funding says women over all get smaller grants than men, even when controlling for research potential. The findings have implications for their long-term success in academic science. https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2019/03/06/new-study-nih-funding-says-women-get-smaller-grants-men#.XKKDgHMsqbh.link Below, we’re highlighting some of NIH’s training modules—not the most popcorn-worthy viewing, but helpful in making sure your proposal is submission-ready. These can also be helpful for students to view. Recently, the NIH posted a “New ‘All About Grants’ Podcast on Using RePORT Web Tools Throughout the Grant Process,” part of a multi-part webcast. “In this next installment of the NIH’s All About Grants podcast series, Dr. Brian Haugen and Dr. Cindy Danielson from the NIH Office of Extramural Research join us to share their advice on applying these tools to help you throughout the grants process (MP3 / Transcript). We touch on areas such as figuring out who to contact at NIH to discuss your research ideas, seeing what research projects NIH has funded, and how to apply these tools to strengthen your grant application. RePORT attracts over 120,000 unique visitors each month, so tune in to see what the excitement is all about and learn how you too can strategically use its tools.”

NIH hosts a Clearinghouse for Training Modules to Enhance Data Reproducibility. The modules were themselves grant funded in response to RFPs issued in 2014 and 2018. There is a series of introductory videos that cover things like “Lack of Transparency” and “Blinding and Randomization.” You can also find “Let’s Experiment: A Guide for Scientists Working at the Bench,” “Statistical Topics for Reproducible Animal Research,” and “Improving Reproducibility in Research,” among other options. https://www.nigms.nih.gov/training/pages/clearinghouse-for-training-modules-to-enhance-data-reproducibility.aspx

From the NEH The NEH has made significant changes to its Fellowship Guidelines—a writing sample will now be required: From the guidelines: “Applicants must submit a writing sample that demonstrates the applicant’s ability to express ideas and make a clear argument. It should be in the style of the proposed project. Evaluators will use the sample to assess the clarity of your writing as well as your knowledge of the subject area. The writing sample can be either from the proposed project (preferred) or from a recent publication, but it should not be more than five years old. It must be from a single piece of work and single-authored. For junior scholars, an excerpt from your dissertation is acceptable if you are applying for your first book project. The writing sample may not be more than ten double-spaced pages, including any footnotes or endnotes, and may not include a table of contents, an outline, or an abstract of the proposed work (information of this sort belongs in the narrative). In preparing the sample, leave one-inch margins and use a font no smaller than eleven point. You may single-space footnotes or endnotes. If the sample is a PDF of a published work, its length must not exceed the equivalent of ten double-spaced pages in eleven-point typescript. If the sample has been published,

you must indicate this and list the publication on your résumé.” Also, some of our colleagues who attended the CUR Dialogues reported that the NEH will be piloting a new system of peer reviews for the Fellowship program. A three-person panel with a specific scope (such as 19th-century American history) will conduct an initial review of applications. Those selected will then be reviewed by a full peer review panel that has a broader scope (e.g., American and British history), as is customary. https://www.neh.gov/sites/default/files/inline-files/fellowships-april-10-2019.pdf
