On behalf of Bardon State School I extend the warmest of welcomes to you and your family to our wonderful school community. Our school was founded in 1948 and has established itself as a high performing school. We pride ourselves on delivering high quality programs that develop the whole child. We are an enthusiastic school community that continually strives for improvement within a supportive environment.

The aim of our school is to ensure that every child is challenged to achieve their potential. In an ever changing world, our children need to develop skills, knowledge, attitudes, values and resilience to succeed on their lifelong learning journey. Our whole school community is committed to “Learning and Growing’ and supports this through a rich curriculum, a collaborative and dedicated staff, and a focus on learners and learning beyond the set curriculum. We provide opportunities for all as we strive to develop curious and confident learners. A positive parent-school partnership is essential in creating the optimum learning environment for your child. Our teachers provide a range of opportunities for you to connect with your child’s learning and welcome your engagement in their learning journey. Our P & C is very active in supporting the school so please consider how you might become involved. It’s not just that ‘many hands make light work’, it’s that you will become a part of the fabric of our community and your child can only benefit from this commitment. This prospectus has been prepared to assist you and your child to settle into this new learning environment. Whilst every effort has been made to give you current information about the school’s procedures and policies, at times changes may need to be made. These will be published on our Website page and in the fortnightly newsletter, so that you have all the information you need to support your child at Bardon State School. Once again I welcome you to our school and look forward to building a productive partnership between your family and the school community as we watch our students “Learn and Grow”.

BARDON STATE SCHOOL Prospectus 8

Hello and welcome to Bardon State School on behalf of the P & C Executive. Congratulations on finding our treasure of a school! We hope you have an opportunity to see not only the excellent staff and facilities our children engage with every day, but also the core of our school – its community and culture. Bardon State School is unique in many ways. The stand out for me, as a parent of the school, is its community. We are fortunate to have Sharni Tomkins and Andrew Male as our School Principal and Deputy School Principal respectively. They are committed to engaging the P&C in decisions relating to the schools Strategic Plan and its operational plans/policies. This transparency and involvement of the P&C in the shaping of our children's school experience is the cornerstone of the school’s sense of community. It is a comforting feeling to know that by attending the P&C meetings you can have a genuine influence over your children’s school experience. Whilst this unique degree of engagement and transparency between the P&C and the School's Senior Leaders may

set the tone of the engaging community spirit, the sense of community doesn't stop there. The welcoming nature of the Bardon parents and children were the stand out for our decision to send our children here. Starting at a new school, be it in Prep or otherwise, can be daunting but the sense of belonging and inclusiveness at Bardon does not take long to permeate the children's and their families school experience. You can expect to run into other Bardon families in various local venues and receive a friendly and genuine greeting. Bardon is a unique community where people wave and toot a ‘hello’ as they pass you in the street. The community is active in maintaining a caring and friendly culture. One of our previous P&C President’s wrote how the school is an old fashioned sort of school in the sense that events are held ‘just for the sake of having a get together’. It is often referred to as a city school in the country and I think this feeling has remained over the years. That old school charm is also evident in the sense that it is an "all in" type of

school…If you see a need, we encourage you to make it your own, come along and present your suggestion at the next P&C or email it to our P&C secretary for inclusion in the agenda. The MAYFAIR is our signature event and people from across Brisbane come to enjoy it. It’s also our main fundraiser for the year, enabling the P&C to support the school with additional teacher aide time, air conditioning throughout the school and technology support. The Junior Playground and Stage have both been developed with seed funding from the Mayfair over the last 10 years. The P&C supported the school to complete projects including the Senior Playground development, Oval, Car Park, and Technology hubs. We look forward to further supporting the school with new and innovative programming and resources.

I encourage you to participate in the P&C, a parent group that supports the work of the school staff to ensure our children have the best facilities and learning environment. We meet on the third Monday of the month, starting at 7.00pm in the school Resource Centre. This year will be great year at Bardon State School, and we would love you to spend it with us. Please feel free to contact me at any time on [email protected] should you have any further questions and or suggestions.

Kind Regards,

Jo Taylor President

During 2016 the school undertook a rigorous review process. This included an external panel completing a school review using the National School Improvement Tool and providing a report. Staff, students and parents were engaged in a range of feedback and visioning processes to canvas ideas and dreams for Bardon State School for the next four years. This data was used to develop our School’s Vision and Values, our four Year Strategic Plan and our Annual Implementation Plans. Though there were many aspects covered in the review; Teaching, Learning and Learners is the focus of our school plans. Information gathered has also assisted in providing a strategic direction for the support provided by our P and C and facilities.

Learning and Growing Pedagogical Framework… What’s important about Teaching and

Learning at BSS? Bardon State School’s curriculum is aligned to the Australian Curriculum. Our teaching teams collaborate to develop Year Level plans and Term Plans that ensure continuity and alignment across classrooms from P-6. Our Year Level Teaching Teams engage in Collaborative Professional Release (CPR) each week to; review the curriculum to be taught, plan pre assessments, analyse class data, design teaching and learning experiences and assessments, and moderate to ensure alignment of teacher judgement. There are eight Learning Areas in the Australian Curriculum English Maths Science Humanities and Social Sciences

(Incorporating History and Geography) Technologies

(Incorporating Design Technology and Digital Technology)

The Arts (incorporating Visual Arts, Music, Dance, Drama and Media Arts)

Health and Physical Education Languages Other Than English

Japanese (Years 4 o 6) Each term we also have a focus on Mindfulness and/or Breathing programs either provided within the school or from external agencies.

Lastly, each class has a half hour lesson each week focussed around a range of Social Emotional programs; “Beating Bully Bulldozer, “Friends for Life” and Emotional Resilience. How we teach at BSS...

We use a range and balance of teaching approaches to ensure skills, Knowledge and understanding are developed in our students from prep to year 6. Our aim is to ensure our high expectations are upheld academically but also instilling the skills needed in an ever changing world. Explicit Instruction is a feature of our teaching pedagogy and based on the work of John Fleming and Fisher and Frey. Explicit teaching is an instructional strategy used by teachers to meet the needs of their students and engage them in unambiguous, clearly articulated teaching. The aspects of Explicit Instruction include:

Establishing and maintaining clear learning goals and expectations for each lesson (OLGIT) Teaching and expecting students to use metalanguage in ways that support learning Deconstructing and sequencing teaching to focus on the steps that lead to new knowledge, deeper understandings and/or more sophisticated skills Varying instruction in response to immediate and reflective feedback Providing scaffolded learning experiences for students to practise, synthesise and consolidate learning Developing the capability of students to self regulate and learn independently

Inquiry Learning is incorporated into a range of learning areas which encourages students to take more ownership of their learning and to develop the skills of questioning, researching, analysing, communicating, evaluating and reflecting. This promotes problem solvers and curious life-long learners who think creatively. We continually find areas to develop these skills in the students through real and relatable learning experiences. During 2017 we established the BILT Team,(Bardon Enquiry Learning Team) who work collaboratively within our school and with other agencies in the development of our Inquiry Model. During 2018 we introduced BSS Inquiry Model in Prep with Learning Play based on Keith Wallers “Play Matters” model and an inquiry cycle in science . During 2019 and beyond we will be extending the learning model throughout the school. The Gradual Release of Responsibility Model is also a feature of our teaching and learning sequence and it moves students through stages of engagement in their learning from;

I Do Teacher centred instruction and modelling

We Do /You do Together Collaborative engagement in the learning; practise of skills together

You Do Student demonstration of their learning

Plough Back Reviewing the learning together

Curriculum Connections... Parents and Teachers working together

Each term teachers share a Curriculum Snapshot, which outlines the key skills and Knowledge from the Australian Curriculum to be covered in the term and the major assessments. It also outlines how students and teachers will set key goals for their learning. This is a great way for you to discuss progress with your child. Teachers will send out a newsletter each term outlining key events and information. Teams also contribute to our fortnightly newsletter The Bardon Grapevine, so you can keep in touch with the classroom. Many classrooms have opportunities for you to help out. Your teacher will outline these at our annual Parent Information Evening at the beginning of each year. Make sure you follow us on Facebook where we are always sharing the learning and excitement of our classrooms and school. Assessment and Reporting... Parents, Teachers and Students monitoring progress and setting new challenges

The Australian Curriculum promotes increased consistency across classrooms and continuity across year levels in what is taught and how it is assessed and reported in Queensland schools. Reporting is part of communicating with parents and building the school-parent partnership to improve student learning. School reporting processes are clear and transparent for parents, so they understand:

The learning expectations for the student The student’s achievements against expected standards How well the student is engaging with the expected learning How the student may be able to improve

Schools use the appropriate template in Oneschool to complete written reports to parents. This reports student achievement for each learning area/subject studied in the reporting period. Student effort and behaviour is also reported. Written reports are emailed at the end of Terms 2 and 4 as part of the Student Learning Portfolio. Parent Interviews take the format of a three way conference involving the child during Term 1 and 3. Parents can request an interview at other times. Simply contact your child’s teacher and arrange a mutually convenient time. Homework...

We believe Homework is an integral part of the teaching/learning process and assists in developing study habits that are required as students move through the learning years of school. We want to create a balance throughout the primary school years to enable students to build these skills and engage in real-life challenges and activities. Homework takes the form of reading, reviewing spelling, work revision, practise examples to complete or assignments requiring some research and report writing.

Parents can help in this important task by ensuring that the home tasks are completed and that an area free from distractions such as television, is set aside in the home for study purposes. Your child’s books and homework should provide a link between home and school, and a discussion point between parent and child. Please refer to our homework policy for more detailed information. Religious Instruction...

Queensland state schools embrace a multitude of cultural, religious and non-religious beliefs and encourage students to grow and develop as a whole person, in particular, in beliefs, values and attitudes. State schools respect the background and beliefs of all students and staff by not promoting, or being perceived as promoting, any particular set of beliefs in preference to another. Queensland state schools provide religious instruction in accordance with Chapter 5 of the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006 (EGPA) and Part 5 of the Education (General Provisions) Regulations 2006 (EGPR) by making available up to one hour per week for the provision of religious instruction to students (except Prep students) who are members of a faith group that has approval to deliver religious instruction at the school.

Japanese but also appreciation of the deep culture. We have a sister school in Japan and often host student groups. We feel this is a deeply enriching experiences for both the visiting school and our students alike. Music

The school boasts a comprehensive music program comprising of choirs, instrumental music and classroom music. All students participate in a ½ hour a week classroom music program provided by a specialist teacher.

Choir

The major aim of our choir program is to inspire in children a love of music and singing. There are three choirs within the school, the “Junior Choir”, “The Big Bardon Choir”, and the “Bardo Voce Choir”. Many children continue with the choir as they progress through the school. Some choirs require an audition process to be completed. It is an expectation that continued involvement in the choral program is contingent on students’ regular attendance at rehearsals. The choir performs under the baton of our choral music teacher and they form an integral part of the school’s cultural program. Children have many performance experiences throughout the year with the

choirs regularly performing on school assemblies, at community events, school concerts and competitions. Costs: Parents with children in the program will be asked to contribute as follows:

School participation fee to cover the cost of music competitions and buses. There is a separate cost for the music uniform from Year 4.

Instrumental Music

The Instrumental Music Program forms an integral part of the school curriculum. Children in Year Four who have achieved the required level of skill development are invited to join the program. There are limited places available. Instruction is given in flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, saxophone and percussion. Children undertaking instruction may "hire" these instruments from the school in their first year. Costs: Parents with children in the program will be asked to contribute as follows:

School participation fee to cover the cost of music, competitions and the purchase of new equipment. There is a separate cost for the music uniform from year 4. Children will require an accessories pack which includes such items as a practice pad, if applicable, text book, CD and other equipment specific to their instrument.

The Active Learning Team ALT... Model of Service

The Active Learning Team (ALT) works alongside class teachers as co-teachers to meet the individual needs of all students in their class. Our model is based on inclusive practices and focusses on applying reasonable adjustments to allow students to be a part of the classroom environment and engage with the curriculum as a priority. Collaboratively the ALT teacher and class teacher co-plan and co-teach to differentiate the curriculum, resources or support strategies in order to match individual student learning needs. ALT Teachers also work with Teacher Aides to ensure continuity of programs in place in classrooms and the playground. Students requiring significant adjustments to their learning, play or social emotional programming may be referred to ALT. Parents should discuss any concerns with their class teacher in the first instance. Teachers collect data and evidence to present at a weekly referral meeting. The Guidance Officer, a member of the Leadership team and other key specialists may be at the ALT meetings. The ALT team evaluates each case and an action plan is developed

This could include; Further assessments – internal specialists Referral to an external agency Adjustments to teaching programming, assessments or resources Development of specific individualised plans Engagement of specialist support to the school where possible

Guidance Officer - GO

A Guidance Officer visits the school one day a week. Contact with the Guidance Officer is arranged through the referral process with the class teacher or through contact with the Principal or Deputy Principal. The Guidance Officer may complete some specific assessments to support the staff’s understanding of the student needs. There may be a possibility of short term counselling (4 weeks) if appropriate. This assists the Guidance Officer to understand the case more fully and then discuss possible referral on external agencies if required. Speech and Language Pathologist - SLP

A Speech Pathologist visits three times a term.. Their role is to assist teachers and teacher aides with the establishment of oral language programs, complete speech and language assessments where appropriate and provide training to the wider class. Due to the limited access, ongoing therapy is not an option for our Speech Pathologist but they will assist in supporting families to access further services if appropriate. Access to this service is through the referral process to the Active Learning Team. Parents should discuss any concerns with the class teacher in the first instance.

They are to provide a springboard for learning communication and social skills development but they are so much more. The clubs provide an avenue for creative and curious minds to explore a common interest. Throughout the year, these clubs change at times to meet the needs and interests of the students. Clubs run at most lunch breaks and classrooms will have a timetable to show the clubs, times, age groups for access and location. Some very popular clubs are:

Student Representative Council – SRC

The SRC has an Executive membership (6/5) and representatives from all other classes from Year 3-6. Their role is to organise the community fundraising focus each term, assist with a range of events and often assist the school leadership team with key endeavours. Each year the SRC also fundraisers for a legacy item for the school. Sporting Houses

Each student is placed in one of our three sporting houses;

Ruby - Red Emerald - Green Topaz - Yellow

Each year we hold a whole school cross country, athletics carnival and swimming carnival. In the early years our focus is to build confidence to ‘have a go’ and enjoyment in sports. We run our athletics day differently based on a current theme eg Olympics Buddies

Our seniors and Preps ‘Buddy up’ for a range of events during the year. They are integral to the running of our Under 8’s day each year, they assist with Buddy reading, and they are great supports at all of our sporting carnivals. Our seniors enjoy the buddy program as much as our newest school members and we value the responsibility and respectful relationships it fosters.

Responsible Behaviour Plan...

At Bardon

State School we have a whole school Responsible Behaviour Plan (RBP). This is available on our website and in our “Welcome Pack”. Please take some time to review this document on our website. Learning is not only focussed on the curriculum at BSS. Learning about appropriate behaviours and social communications skills are equally important in our journey to be global citizens. Just like academic learning, not everyone gets it right the first time or at the same pace. Supports are provided to all students along their learning journey. Having clear expectations is the first step and you will notice the four school expectations throughout the school and also class developed rules within each classroom. It is also important to develop a predictable environment where the consequences for choices are outlined and known to all. This is why we also work with students in developing agreed positive consequences and negative consequences.

At times some students may need additional support and individualised support plans may be developed. Within our RBP we outline our Bullying No Way policy. We support students to use the “high five” when dealing with difficult situations. We assist students to label difficult situations through the Beating Bully Bulldozer program, so that all behaviours are not labelled as Bullying. We encourage students to seek support and advice from their class teacher, the teacher on duty or with the Deputy or Principal if they have ongoing concerns. We encourage parents to support their child to resolve issues using the strategies outlined in the RBP or to support them to talk with their teacher or Admin. Building resilient citizens of the future that have developed skills to independently resolve difficulties is important. For all members of our community it is

School Expectations

BARDON STATE SCHOOL Prospectus 24

important that we consider connecting and disconnecting habits. When things are most difficult we can easily fall into the “Dead End Roads” thinking and communicating. When things don’t go as we wish, or are difficult it is important that both as students or adults we focus on “open roads” habits. This ensures a positive outcome and assists in developing lifelong skills for managing difficult situations. Parent/Carer to School Communication

The positive partnership between parents and school is vital to promote the optimum learning environment for your child. Teachers at Bardon are dedicated professionals who want to ensure they are ready for every child’s learning every day. The morning before school is precious time for them to prepare. Please ensure you are mindful of this and schedule an appointment to ensure you can have the time and focus needed. Email is an efficient and preferred method of communication between parents and the school. Please remember that teachers teach all day and it is unlikely that they will read or respond to emails in the same day. Urgent messages should be directed to the office. Your feedback as a major stakeholder of our school community is important to us. At times, communication between the home and school can be misunderstood. Most issues / complaints should be directed to your child's classroom teacher first. If you feel a situation requires further support, you may choose to organise a meeting with the Deputy Principal (P to 3 students) or Principal (4 to 6 students) through the office on 3511 4555. Please review our full policy on our school website.

Attendance

Regular attendance at school is necessary to ensure that continuous progress is maintained. Research is very clear that there is a direct link between patterns of attendance and lateness negatively affecting student outcomes. ‘Every Day Counts’, is a state-wide initiative that aims to assist student attendance at school through a shared commitment by students,. parents, caregivers, schools and the community. To do this “Every Day Counts” promotes four key messages;

All children should be enrolled at school and attend on every school day. Schools monitor, communicate and implement strategies to improve regular school attendance. Truanting can place a student in unsafe situations and impact on their future employability and life choices. Attendance at school is the responsibility of everyone in the community http://education.qld.gov/everyday counts

Absences and Early/Late Arrivals

At Bardon State School we align with Education Queensland’s ‘Same Day Notification’ policy with absences. When your son or daughter is absent from school it is essential that the office is notified prior to 9am on the day or before, if possible. The school absence line is 3511 4560. Leave a message with the child's name, class, reason for absence, name of the person calling and when your child is expected to return to school.

This ensures the safety of your child and that the rolls are marked with the correct absence codes. An SMS notification system is in place to assist with ensuring that all students’ absence are accounted for every day. We ask for parents' co-operation in arranging any appointments, e.g. medical, dental etc. out of school hours and arrange holidays for the set holiday periods. At times we recognise that this is unavoidable. On these rare occasions please ensure that he/she is signed in or out at the office. This is an essential measure in our Work Place Health and Safety policy for Fire and Evacuation. Students arriving after 8.50am or departing prior to 3pm are required to obtain a late slip/departure from the office Dress Code

Wearing a uniform encourages a closer and deeper association with the school. Our school pride is reinforced by care for our uniforms as much as we care for our grounds, our learning and each other. Our uniform reinforces our sense of team and it is expected that all students at Bardon State School wear their full school uniform every day within the school grounds and represents the school proudly when off campus. As a Sun Safe School, hats are to be worn at all times when children are outdoors. Baseball style caps are not acceptable. Bardon State School’s policy is NO HAT NO PLAY.

The enrolment agreement that each parent/carer and student signs on entry to Bardon State School sets out the responsibilities of all students enrolled. Part of this agreement is to abide by the Student Dress Code. Please refer to our Uniform Policy on Page 42

Sun Safety

Sun safety is important for our school because our students are here during peak times for ultraviolet radiation (UVR), which is 10 am to 3 pm. Cancer Council Queensland says childhood sun exposure contributes significantly to a person’s risk of developing skin cancer in their lifetime, so our school encourages sun safe behaviours. Wearing wide brim hats, sun protective clothing, sunscreen and keeping in the shade as much as possible are good habits to get into and we encourage parents and staff to set a good example for our students. Parents and guardians can check out Cancer Council Queensland’s website

http://www.cancerqld.org.au/page/prevention/skin_cancer/) for more information on being SunSmart. Bike Safety

Many students enjoy the independence of riding to school. As parents it is important to assess your child’s readiness for this responsibility and ensure that they are aware of the road rules and legal obligations to wear a helmet. Students are expected to dismount

to cross roads, especially at our school crossing and must walk their bike within the school grounds. There is a bike rack located near the music block. First Aid and Illness

If your son/daughter is unwell, parents are advised to keep them at home. Sending them to school under such circumstances could possibly lead to the illness being prolonged or in some cases, spreading the illness to other children. First aid assistance is provided for minor injuries. An ambulance will be called for injuries of a serious nature. In the interests of your child’s wellbeing, it is essential that the school is kept informed of any changes to address, work, home and emergency telephone numbers. It is vital that the school has an up to date record of any health issues and that the school has been provided with an Individual Health Plan for:

Asthma Diabetes Epilepsy Severe Allergic Reactions (anaphylaxis)

These plans must be developed with your support medical specialists and are to be updated annually or when any change has occurred.

Emergency Evacuation and Lockdown

Each term we will practice with our students our Lock Down and Evacuation procedures. Should you be on site during an emergency please follow the directions of the staff member closest to you. It is essential all visitors to the school sign in to the office as this document is vital in ensuring all members of our community are safe and accounted for. Lost Property

Clearly naming all your child’s belongings will greatly help returning belongings should anything become mislaid. All lost property is held in the front area of the sick room for a term. Any unnamed articles will be removed at the end of each term. Mobile Phones and Digital Technologies

No students should have a device, including mobile phone, at school. Should there be a requirement for a student to have a device, written permission must be sought from the Principal and the device given to the teacher or office at the beginning of each day. The full policy is outlined in your enrolment documents - Mobile Phones and Electronic Devices. Parking

The carpark nearest the office is a staff carpark. The carpark nearest the tennis court/ Senior Playground is our community carpark and parents are welcome to park here. There is never enough car parking so

parents are asked to set down and pick up children outside the school grounds whenever possible. Please note that a two minute maximum “Drop Off Zone” (Kiss and Go) operates immediately in front of the school. Students are required to wait within the school gates at the front of the school for parents to arrive in the two minute zone. Parents are reminded that when “DROPPING OFF” or “COLLECTING” children that they obey normal road rules and extend to our neighbours common courtesies such as parking away from driveways. Invoicing - Payment Procedures

Each year you will be provided a booklist for Prep to Year 6. Teachers have collaborated on these lists to ensure that there is consistency across classes and year levels. The items on the list are considered necessary to support the teaching and learning at Bardon State School. To assist parents, Schoolstuff has been engaged to manage the booklist purchasing process. Your booklist can be ordered online through the schoolstuff website and delivered to your door. If you have any questions about the process you can find helpful information at the FAQ link or contact Schoolstuff directly

Social Media Protocols

Social media can be an effective communication tool to connect with an audience, whether that be parents, staff, students or individuals who choose to receive information from schools. It can be used to promote school and student achievements, send friendly reminders to parents and also promote local and school events. The school utilises a range of Social Media as communication to parents and the wider community. Only first names of students are used and only photographs of students that have parent consent. It is important for families to recognise that taking and posting photographs of school events or student information on social media without this permission may mean that you are breaching this protocol.

“When parents are involved in their children’s education at home, they do better in school. And when parents are involved in school, children go farther in school and the schools they go to are better” (Henderson & Beria, 1994). International and Australian research continually shows correlations between parent/family engagement in children’s education and schooling. Indicators such as:

Improved school readiness Higher retention and graduation rates Enhanced cognitive development and academic achievement Higher motivation and greater ability to self-regulate behaviour Better social and relationship skills

P & C Meetings

All parents of children attending our school are very welcome to attend the P&C meetings. They are held on the 3rd Monday of each month at 7:00pm. They are held in the Resource Centre (Library) and will be advertised in the Bardon Grapevine and also on the noticeboard. The agenda and minutes are emailed out prior to meetings to P&C members, so that all are aware of matters of interest. If you cannot attend meetings you are still welcome to receive all of these emails, so that the lines of communication always remain open. Please don’t feel shy about attending meetings. The members are friendly and we welcome all parents and community members. You can contact the P and C president on [email protected]

Joining the P&C Association is a great way to keep informed, to contribute to the quality education of your child/ren and to

make new friends. Your contribution can be as large or as small as you can mange, but your ongoing support of the P&C Association is invaluable. Not only will you be supporting the school community but you will be supported by the school community. You can learn new skills, and gain a clear understanding of how the school is operated. This is a great opportunity to share in the schools decision-making process and shape the future.

DIGI Tech Lab and DIGI Hubs

During 2016 we developed the Digi Tech lab in our Resource Centre. With support from our P & C fundraising we also established Digi Hubs in all learning areas. These are key resource for all students to access during Digi Tech specialist lessons, lunch times and other class times. Students access iPads and laptops in their classrooms and the Resource Centre to build skills to interact and effectively use technology to support and enhance their learning. The Science Technology Engineering Arts Maths Precinct – THE STEAM Precinct

Under development. Currently we have a stunning but underuti-lised Stage area that we want to develop into a hub for Science and The Arts. We are hoping that in the near future we will be able to extend the existing building to house a new STEAM area at the rear of the stage. The area along with our current stage would create the new STEAM precinct. Currently many of our Visual Arts lessons and performances are hosted at the stage area including;

Bardon’s Got Talent Arts Evening End of Year Concert

The Early Years Precinct

This area was redeveloped in 2017and is now semi-enclosed to allow for an additional interactive learning space, provide additional storage for the Early Years Motor Program equipment and a revitalised space for our learners. In addition to that, we hope to be able to recarpet and repaint classroom in C Block to further enhance the Early Years Precinct. Sporting Facilities

As part of the Federal Government’s Building Education Revolution Program the school built a Multi-Purpose Indoor Sports Complex called “The Bird Cage”. This complex not only provides the school with a tremendous indoor facility for various aspects of the Physical Education Program but also provides additional court space for netball, basketball and tennis away from the quirks of the Brisbane weather. The school currently hires The Birdcage to a range of community endeavours. Children also have access to our own oval on the banks of Ithaca Creek, a second Tennis Court adjacent to the oval, Adventure Playgrounds, an Undercover Games Area for Physical Education Lessons skipping activities and ballgames. These outstanding facilities are in addition to the general play areas within the grounds.

Playgrounds

Specifically designed playgrounds have been developed by the P & C to support the enjoyment and physical development of the children. The P-3 playground consists of a large sandpit, fort and climbing equipment for gross motor and Imaginative play. This playground feeds on to the top oval allowing for multiple choices of activities for our lower years students. During 2015 the P & C redeveloped the senior playground to reinvigorate the space. It now is a multi-level play space that promotes imaginative play. In 2016 a complete refurbishment of the school oval was completed to create a safe, secure and high quality play environment for our students. New soccer goals now frame the fully irrigated oval along with the new cricket pitch. Our school has a community partnership with Valleys Cricket Club. This positive partnership will assist to continue to maintain the high quality of the oval and establish new cricket net facilities in the near future. It also is providing a place for our students and others to enjoy their Saturday game on our oval.

External Hire Agreements Extension and Enrichment within and Beyond BSS

We have developed partnerships with a range of community providers to utilise our school facilities through hire agreements. Transition Programming

It is important that parents provide all information that will assist us to know your child and their needs. This assists us in class placements and any supports that may be required. Our Prep Teachers work closely with Bardon Kindy and other local Pre-school centres to ensure that we have a smooth transition to our school. Each year the Prep teachers organise a Prep Experience morning for our new enrolments. In addition, they visit the local centres to observe students and talk with the centre Directors and teachers. Bardon Kindy also visits Bardon State School so

that we can align programming to ensure students readiness for their new school environment. Bardon Kindy is also involved in our annual Under 8’s day. Our Active Learning Team works closely with personnel from The Gap State High School and other local High Schools to promote smooth transitions between the Primary and High School settings. All Year 5 and 6 students also have the opportunity to participate in a High School Experience day each year. Students with individual support needs may have additional visits to a new setting, visits from support personnel to BSS or a range of other supports to ensure a smooth transition.

Consequences – Non Compliance to BSS Uniform Policy During the enrolment process, the Bardon State School’s Responsible Behaviour Plan, Prospectus, Uniform Policy and a range of other key policies and guidelines are provided and these

expectations are outlined in relation to uniform and behaviour expectations. It is a condition of enrolment that an Enrolment Agreement is signed by both students and parents indicating that they have read and understood their responsibilities and are agreeing to abide by the expectations when attending Bardon State School.

At Bardon State School we make systematic efforts to prevent inappropriate or unacceptable behaviour by teaching and reinforcing expected behaviours on an on going basis. Adherence to our Uniform Policy is part of the expectations of the school. When breaches of the Uniform Policy occur, it is important that consequences are predictable. Our school seeks to ensure that responses to inappropriate or unacceptable behaviour are consistent and proportionate to the nature of the behaviour.

The following is a guide to the processes in place following a breach/es of the Uniform Policy.
