Barcoo in flood over Easter weekend

– Rowan HunnamLooking young after receiving a bit of work some years ago, Hendo’s 1959 International turned 50 this Easter

On the Thursday before Easter it seemed that many people were hoping for rain over the long weekend.

Their wishes were granted as, by Tuesday morning, the townships of both Blackall and Tambo had each received 374 points (95mm) of rain.

Those who took the opportunity to go away for Easter missed out on the action down by the river in Blackall. There was a constant flurry of cars over the bridge, monitoring the steady rise of the water level in the Barcoo throughout Sunday and Monday.

The steady rainfall over a wide part of the catchment produced a peak of water in the Barcoo at Blackall, which came to within centimetres of covering the bridge.

Throughout the week prior to Easter, the automatic water level meter at Blackall recorded a normal depth of 0.85 metres in the Barcoo.

From dawn on Easter Saturday through to mid-afternoon on Easter Monday, the river rose more than 2.7 metres to peak at 3.56 metres, just below the bridge road surface. The level classified as a ‘minor flood’ is when the height of the river at Blackall reaches 2.9 metres. Above this level, minor roads are blocked or closed and low level bridges in the area may be submerged.

The rainfall was widespread but typically variable over the shire. Many properties received some falls, but some missed out.

‘Praire Vale’, between Augathella and Tambo, recorded a total of 472 points (120mm).

South of Tambo, ‘Lansdowne’ received 413 points (105mm) which put a hold on most of their Easter plans.

Our Blackall/Tambo Regional Council meeting, held in Tambo, considered a full agenda.

The corporate plan was again discussed at length with some adjustments made. It will soon be available for community comment for a period of thirty days. Please avail yourselves of this opportunity to make your comments to the future of our region.

The department of main roads is requesting suggested names for bridges as it is a Q150 initiative. Names for the Barcoo river bridge in Blackall will be sort by the department from the community. I am sure everyone will have their opinion of a suitable name for this bridge. There will be further information from the regional main roads office in Barcaldine regarding this important issue. Watch for further details.

A new certification claim form will shortly be in place for the wild dog bounty, where council requires a GPS reading of where the dog is trapped or shot. The bounty remains the same at $100.

Congratulations to the Blackall Pony Club for hosting the Queensland State Championships, for the first time in Blackall. These events are usually held on the coast or in the south east corner. Despite the rain I am sure it was a most successful championship.

I trust Easter was a wonderful break for all with the recent good rain being a god send for those who were under it. I believe the bucket of rain was a long way in front of a chocolate bunny.

Jan Ross

The Anzac Day weekend this year in Blackall is to be a special occasion with the unveiling of a monument to Major Edgar Towner, VC MC.

This project has come about from the publishing of an article by Blackall State School student, Ronan Robinson. As the project nears completion with the installation of the finished statue, Blackall has planned numerous Anzac functions including a combined schools service to be hosted by Blackall State School and St Joseph’s School students.

Major Towner has clear and distinct links with Longreach, where he lived after World War II and conducted geographical studies of the Longreach channel country. After his death he

was buried in the Longreach cemetery.

To this day replicas of his medals are held in the Longreach RSL, which Major Towner visited every Anzac Day after marching in the town’s Anzac Day parade.

At the Blackall Anzac Day services this year there will be student representatives from eight district schools; some travelling more than 200 kilometres for the day.

Students will be invited to participate through laying a wreath on behalf of their communities and attending a youth morning tea with Colonel Steve Goltz, Major Terry Brennan, the catafalque party and other invited guests including descendants of Major Towner.

This is an opportunity for students to view the statue of Edgar Towner before its official unveiling, to interact with leaders from the armed services and with student leaders from throughout the central west.

Channel 10 News and the ABC’s 7.30 Report will be showcasing the Edgar Towner memorial on their broadcasts. A representative from the Royal Geographical Society of Australia will also be attending the statue unveiling.

The combined schools’ Anzac service commences at 9am on Friday, April 24 at the Blackall Cultural Centre. The Edgar Towner statue will be unveiled at 6pm in the Memorial Park.

Rich military heritage on show for Blackall’s Anzac Day

Strong student involvement in Anzac ceremonies

Allawah Station, 60 kilometres from Tambo, received 550 points (140mm).

‘Byrgenna’, 80 kilometres south of Tambo, received 350 points (88mm).

‘Toliness’, also south of Tambo received an impressive 700 points (177mm), which was only met by ‘Sunny Downs’ and their rainfall of 800 points (203mm).

North west of Blackall at ‘Melrose’, 250 points (63mm) fell, while a similar amount was recorded at ‘Tralee’, north east of Blackall, of 266 points (67mm) by Easter Monday. ‘Duneira’ had a solid fall of 370 points (94mm).

Local Agforce president Jack Banks said that across the shire generally it had been very good rain.

“It had been forecast and it came through almost exactly as predicted,” he said.

Prior to the Easter rain, the Blackall Tambo shire was relatively dry, particularly in the southern parts.

“Rain at this time of year makes a huge difference,” said Jack.

“The only problem is that it was not heavy enough to run water into the catchments and dams, so some parts are still very dry.”

There is currently an assessment of those areas that may still require drought assistance.

television on Thursday, April 23. “The Blackall community has a proud and rich

military heritage and has consequently always supported Anzac Day activities,” Major Brennan added.

“The Anzac weekend this year hosts a series of especially important events.”

Therefore, he asks that the community go that little bit further this year and attend as many of the ceremonies as possible including the statue unveiling, combined schools ceremony and the veteran’s dinner, as well as the Anzac Day ceremonies.

Major Brennan concluded by stating that the organising committee still required funding.

Donations towards the Towner project are welcome and individuals and organisations are encouraged to contact Major Brennan should they wish to contribute financially.

Blackall Innovations Forum

Producers from around the central west have the opportunity to benefit from the experiences of the award-winning Blackall BestPrac Group at the inaugural Blackall Innovations Forum on Tuesday, April 21.

The forum will showcase new technologies and management techniques that have worked well for other graziers.

It was the Blackall BestPrac Groups’ ability to work together, embrace new ideas and seek the most profitable and sustainable business practices that won them the Rabobank Agribusiness award for ‘most outstanding innovation’ at the Nissan Central West Excellence Awards last month.

Jack Banks from the Blackall BestPrac Group said winning this award acknowledges the dedication put in by members to improving their industry and recognises what has been done over a number of years.

A group of graziers with tried and proven innovations have been brought together to share their experiences.

Topics include the technology in e-sheep, satellite monitoring systems, wild dog control, profitability of cattle and sheep in the central west, managing depression and water innovations.

For more information contact DCQ liaison officer Colleen James on 4652 7836, 0428 580 998 or email [email protected].

Queensland premier and minister for the Arts Anna Bligh has announced new art spaces for Blackall and Tambo through the Gritty Places program.

“Blackall Tambo Regional Council will receive $50,000 for the renovation of the old Woodies’ General Store storage shed in Tambo and $32,600 for the refurbishment of the former Council Students Hostel at Blackall,” said Anna Bligh.

The venue at Blackall will be a multi-purpose arts space for dance performances, writing and poetry workshops and exhibitions, while the Tambo development will provide a dedicated arts studio

with the capacity to host youth arts workshops.

Initiated in 2006, Gritty Places is a partnership between the state government and local councils to develop disused council-owned buildings into arts spaces.

“It is a creative and cost-effective way to help the regions develop places for people to develop their talent in cultural and creative industries.”

Previous communities that have received funding through the program have demonstrated positive results from having these art spaces in their communities.

Residents in central west Queensland can help celebrate Queensland’s 150th birthday by naming six bridges around the region.

Main Roads minister Craig Wallace said the Q150 bridge-naming festivities would highlight the role that roads and bridges play in connecting Queenslanders and the state’s prosperity.

One of the six bridges in the central west region that requires a name is the Barcoo river bridge at Blackall.

The Blackall community is invited to put forward suggestions for consideration, particularly those names that mean something special to the community such as Indigenous names, local historical events or traditions, plants, animals and geographical landmarks.

Submissions will close on May 22. All residents are encouraged to get involved by visiting the Main Roads website and suggest a name for the Barcoo river bridge at Blackall. Following a review of the submissions by a panel which includes community representatives, a name will be recommended.

For more information on the bridge-naming, phone 4651 2777 or visit www.mainroads.qld.gov.au.
