Len and Margaret Peel, who own Northampton Downs in the Blackall district, were the purchasers of the 22 581ha (55 805ac) property, which was sold by cattle baron Sterling Buntine. Mr Buntine purchased the 17 000ha Inverness for $10.75M in June 2006 and the adjoining Barney’s Bore block of 5500ha for $950 000 in September of the same year. He also had two other Blackall properties on offer, Malvern Hills and Allambie, both of which were passed in on the day, Malvern Hills for $11M and Allambie for $5M on an auctioneer’s bid. Malvern Hills had originally been purchased in 2006 for $14.5M and $6.1M was the price paid for Allambie in 2007. Mr Buntine, the brother-in- law of Great Southern cattle general manager David McLeod, managed the pastoral herd of the collapsed group, which went into receivership in May. According to the Australian Financial Review, much of Mr Buntine’s property, more than 2.8 million hectares across the Kimberley, Northern Territory and Queensland, was leased to Great Southern for its managed cattle investment schemes, and he has chosen to sell some of his property to fill the void created when Great Southern sold its cattle assets. The general meeting of the Blackall-Tambo Regional Council was held in Tambo on October 14. The agenda was extremely busy with presentations by ‘Cicadas’ to give councillors an overview of the model that members of Cicadas have developed. A further presentation by RAPAD General Manager David Arnold provided up-to-date information on current RAPAD projects. John Perry of Mead Consulting also gave an overview of the planned priority of the necessary plans which will accompany the Blackall-Tambo Corporate Plan. A number of these plans must be completed within a State Government timeline, hence the need to have an orderly approach to accomplish these.

A day in the office on Thursday after the International Rural Women’s Day Breakfast held at the National Bistro by the Blackall CWA. An interesting talk by Rowan Hunnam on her recent trip to East Timor, relating to the women especially. Rowan answered many questions put to her by the audience.

I travelled to Windorah with the Blackall-Tambo Economic Development Officer John Hine for the opening of the solar sun farm by Queensland State Government Minister for Natural Resources, Environment, Mines and Energy Steven Robertson and Ergon Energy. This was a most interesting facility with great potential for remote and rural communities, with four already in operation. Solar farms certainly would seem to be the way to lessen our environmental footprint while maintaining the necessary power required by communities.

The invitation to attend the “Bringing Them Home” repatriation ceremony held in Longreach, extended by the Inangai custodians, was accepted. At Inangai Place on the outskirts of Longreach the skeletal remains of two Inangai elders were formally handed back to the custodians by a Melbourne museum representative. A ceremonial smoking took place at Longreach Cemetery “Keeping Place” to ensure the acceptance, welcome, safety and peace of the two Inangai elders who would be laid to rest alongside others. It was a privilege to be part of such an emotive, yet reconciling ceremony.

MELBOURNE CUP IN TAMBO... What a day it was! Victorian Racing Club’s historian Andrew Lemon, Emirates Melbourne Cup Ambassador, acclaimed jockey John Marshall and promotions officer Lauren Zemmet flew into Tambo early for hobby horse races at Tambo State School. Students came from Aramac, Barcaldine, Blackall and Tambo. Everyone enjoyed holding this year’s fabulous 1.6 kg, 18 carat gold Melbourne Cup. Gloved hands were the order of the day.

A well-attended luncheon at the Royal Carrangarra Hotel had thinking caps on as everyone struggled to come up with Melbourne Cup trivia answers. The ladies in their race day hats looked grand. An afternoon tea of outstanding treats in E.E. Parr Park was a pleasant diversion for those attending, although I feel many had a “good lie down” in anticipation of the evening to come.

The Tambo Race Club dinner was an outstanding success with over 100 attending, from Augathella, Charleville, Blackall and Tambo. Andrew Lemon provided some entertaining facts about the history of the Melbourne Cup. The Turnbull family of the Tambo district, being descendents of Richard Turnbull who was Chairman of the Victorian Racing Club for a number of years during the Second World War and proud owner of the 1944 Melbourne Cup winner “Sirius”, were able to provide memorabilia of those wonderful far off race meetings in Melbourne and of course of the modern Turnbull Stakes.

Master jockey John Marshall who rode “Rogan Josh” to victory in 1999 gave an insight into the highs and lows of the racing game, and having worked for Bart Cummings.

An auction of sporting memorabilia and a trivia game rounded out the evening.

The Blackall-Tambo Regional Council Staff input and support, together with the Tambo Race Club, certainly ensured the success of the entire day as well as the wonderful evening.

Droughtmaster bulls topped at $9000 to average $4623 at the inaugural Artesian Droughtmaster sale in Blackall last week.

Organisers said that the new multi vendor sale comprising six prefixes struck instant accord with the buying audience.

With 99 percent clearance, all but one of 73 bulls sold at auction to buyer’s sheet from as far south as Moonie, east to Wowan and all parts of the central highlands and central and north-western regions of the state.

The market topper was the $9000 Glenlands 7037 (P), an 860kg, 32-month-old son of Swan Jeopardise from ‘Glenlands Stud’, Bouldercombe. The bull was bought by Leigh Propsting, Acton, Richmond who accounted for 11 to average her $5318 and take home the $1000 bulk buyer bonus of pasture seed donated by TJO Grass Roots Consulting.

Two others made $8500: the 31-month, 815kg, Medway Oombabeer (P) (Talgai 912) offered by the Donaldson family ‘Medway Stud’, Bogantungan selling to Paul Russell ‘Cooeeall’, Wowan, and the 23-month, 780kg, Fairhaven 08/328 (P) (Glenlands Hallam) offered by Colin and Linda Hewitt’s

‘Fairhaven Stud’, Emerald. The buyer was Duncan Emmott ‘Whitehill’, Longreach.

Jason Sprague ‘Neverfail’, Blackall picked up three to average $4833 topping at $6500 for the 25-month-old, 755kg, Clonlara 0865 (Glenlands D Jutebox).

Jim and Sue Counsell ‘South Delta’, Barcaldine signed off on two to average $5250 topping at $6000 for a 23-month-old from the Fairhaven stable.

Bill Chandler ‘Hillalong’, Barcaldine selected the $8000 Glenlands Hatch son, Glenlands 6933 (P) while Butch and Hazel Howard ‘Locharnoch’, Jericho picked through the offering ending with five to average $5000.

Investing in two Clonlara entries to an average $4750 was Mrs Carrigan ‘Anchorage’ Moonie while Ted Scholes ‘Mena Park’, Blackall took home a $7000 Glenlands 28-month-old.

Ray and Christine Langdon ‘Tiree’, Blackall outlaid $5000 for Glenlands 7000 (29-months) by Glenlands Federation.

The lucky bidder card holder of $500 worth of product donated by Rural Supplements, Rockhampton was the Weber family ‘Nardoo’, Cloncurry.

Artesian Droughtmasters hit $9000Third-year University of

Queensland medical student, Andrew Ramage, is visiting Blackall for his rural medical rotation. He will be holding a free seminar on prevention and early detection of skin cancer.

Mr Ramage says that everyone will have heard the public health messages ‘Slip, slop, slap’ and ‘No hat, no play’, but asks whether anyone has considered why government agencies and health councils emphasise the prevention of sun exposure? What is skin cancer and why is it important to prevent it?

Australia is the skin cancer capital of the world, and Queensland has the highest incidence of skin cancer in Australia. The total incidence for melanoma diagnosed in 2005 in Queensland was 2,658, with 263 deaths from melanoma. Melanoma is not the only type of skin cancer. All skin cancers, like melanoma, can be prevented with sun smart practices and are able to be treated if identified early.

The seminar will be held at the Blackall Memorial & Sports Club on Wednesday, October 28. Tea, coffee and finger food will be provided.

Blackall State School representatives Alison and Samuel Mobbs at the Parliament House Citizenship Awards ceremony. Blackall State School students and teachers were named Order of Australia – Primary School Citizenship Award winners for their Edgar Towner / Wakakirri Country projects. Mrs Mobbs said “it was a terrific ceremony and we were honoured that our project was recognised among some excellent school-based citizenship projects from across the state.”

Guest speakers from Ergon Energy visited St Joseph’s grade 4/5 and 6/7 last week to give a talk on energy, how to use less of it and the benefits of those savings.

Dear Neville,I have kept the Barcoo

Independent of 11 September with the front page article about you.

Congratulations on your being inducted into the National Road Transport’s Hall of Fame in Alice Springs. I guess your name is now alongside some impressive names from the trucking fraternity, and yours is justly there with them.

I am sure the people that you have been closely associated with in the past 49 years are delighted that you have been honoured. I know Doug would have been very proud of you for this recognition. Life has not always been easy for you, I know, but one thing is certain, your word is your bond, and you always delivered from go to whoa as promised. As it says in the article, you are considered a “legend in your own time”.

Although I have never been involved with the wider side of the trucking industry, I can see so much change that has occurred around the Blackall area. Big names have come and gone. The

smaller truckies have soldiered on whilst many good trucking men have been lured by the big money in the mines and what were once family-run businesses within the industry have been gobbled up and taken over or just wiped out of existence. I have no idea how many local drivers are still in Blackall.

I can’t see myself getting out to Blackall again. I went out 12 months ago for Peter Skewes’ birthday. I no longer drive myself even though I have a lovely little Mazda, 3 years old, which has only done 4,000 kilometres, and in which my daughters drive me around Rocky where I need to go. I used a walking stick in Blackall but have now progressed to a wheelie walker which makes getting about the house a lot easier. Thankfully I am not sick, but walking has become a bit of a problem.

I wish you all the best for the future, Nev, and congratulate you on your award. Well deserved.

Keep on trucking!Coleen Skewes

uncontrolled. It is estimated that approximately 95 percent of the water discharged into bore drains from the Great Artesian Basin has been lost through evaporation and seepage. The rate of discharge has been so great that many bores across the Basin have suffered a decline in pressure and flow rate.

The Great Artesian Basin Sustainability Initiative (GABSI) was established to reduce wastage of the resource. The GABSI relies on voluntary participation from landholders and assists rehabilitation of bores and replacement of bore drains with poly pipe systems.

GABSI Regional Manager Andrew Brier reports that over the past 20 years, 562 bores have been repaired or replaced, 283 bore drain systems and 10,700 kilometres of bore drains have been replaced, and that as a result there has been considerable pressure recovery across the basin.

“Some bores that haven’t flowed for years are now flowing. The pressure increase is significant right across the board.”

The GABSI Stage 1 and 2 and predecessor projects were completed this year with a total expenditure of approximately $132 million from government and landholders.

The project has now entered stage 3 with financial contributions topping $120 million for five years until 2014, including an expected $30 million from landholders.

Mr Brier says that they expect this to be the final stage of the project, with a rough estimate of 200 bores and 500 bore drain

systems still to be replaced.“Blackall to Isisford has been

one of our main areas, working on a lot of deep bores.”

Blackall grazier Dick Banks says that the fact the project is subsidised makes it a very viable option, although noting that property owners are contributing 40-60% of the costs while government is funding the balance.

Three years ago, Mr Banks replaced 30 kilometres of bore drain systems with poly piping on ‘Duneira’. They also replaced their 95-year old bore which Mr Banks says was in a bad state and the casing had decayed.

Mr Banks said that their bore has the capacity to discharge 945,000 litres of water every day, but now the only water that is used is what the stock take to drink.

“In the Blackall area, there would be very few bores that are not controlled now and there has been a really positive effect on the pressure.”

Blackall grazier James Pearson says that the initiative is fantastic. Under the GABSI project, Mr Pearson removed 5 sub-artesian bores from ‘Terrick Terrick’ and replaced around 40km of drain systems with 120 kilometres of poly piping. He now supplies two-thirds of the 140,000 acre property from one bore and its piping system.

“It was a full-time job for two people to maintain our water systems. Now we just have to check them 2 or 3 times each week,” Mr Pearson said.

“It should be a compulsory

scheme. Too much of this resource is just being wasted. By capping and piping, all of the water you don’t need isn’t being wasted.”

Mr Boyd said these small blocks were not indicative of the general market in the Blackall area, as the land court had said at the last revaluation that they had added value.

Mr Adcock said he was still negotiating with parties for all of Mr Buntine’s unsold Blackall country, and added that there had been fresh interest in Malvern Hills.

“People are not walking away; if expectations are reasonable, buyers are there,” he said.

“There’s always good interest in Blackall because of the style of country. You don’t see too many going broke there.”
