Happy Valentine’s Day

The January banquet was a great success thanks to all of you who attended. We had 64 club members and guests, who enjoyed meeting other Porsche enthusiasts and learn-ing about a new potential track in Oak Ridge. We gave away a lot of door prizes and everyone took home a goodie bag of Meguiar’s products. Thanks to all who came.

We also reviewed 2007 past events and new events for 2008. I hope you will join us as those of us who took advan-tage of last year’s activities had a great time. Next up is our monthly club meeting followed by Winterfest in Chatta-nooga. This is a super event with an indoor concours, TSD rally, tricycle races and a whole lot more. Sign up now for the Feb. 15 – 17 event at http://www.tr-pca.org/winterfest.asp . Even if you don’t enter your car in the concours, you can park inside in a heated building all week-end.

I would like to thank not only all of you for your support and participation this past year, but also our great officers who helped make those events possible and keep Musik-Stadt active. Allan Cox, our PCA Zone 3 Representative, and his wife Rose also attended our banquet. Allan is also a long-time PCA member and supports our Region and all Zone 3 Regions at national board meetings. Thanks Allan for your support.

And finally, I now realize why our own Dario Franchitti was not at the banquet. He was driving at the Rolex 24 hour race in a DP (Daytona Prototype). And so what if it wasn’t a Porsche (it was a Lexus). And so what if he was only one of four drivers for that car? He won again. Congratulations Dario and good luck with NASCAR.

I hope to see all of you next month at our 2nd Tuesday (Feb 12) in Franklin, and at Winterfest 2008.

THAT’S DAVIS, VIC DAVIS TO YOU MA’AMby Musik-Stadt Treasurer Vic Davis

My fi rst Porsche was a 1988 928 S4. I saw one at a bank auction lot several years previosly and fell in love with the 928. At that time, I had a company car and was not in the market for another car. But compa-ny cars were eliminated and I ended up with a Chevy Lumina. The Lumina was very serviceable but when

it got a lot of miles on it, I had to buy a new vehicle. I thought about the 928 and thought it wouldn’t hurt to look in the want ads. The very fi rst day I looked, there it was! A white 1988 928 and within 15 miles of my house. Within a week it was mine and I ended up driving that car for 7 years with never a serious engine or transmission problem. I liked it so well I bought a 1990 928 3 years ago. And the attention this car gets wherever I go still makes me feel warm and fuzzy!!

My 1988 was a veteran performer for the Eurofest Car shows Mike Gillespie put on. I have fi rst, second, and third place trophies from that series of Eurofest shows. I joined the Porsche club to see and meet with other Porschephiles, hopefully with 928’s! I became the treasurer to stay plugged in to the club’s activities. I have met a lot of very good people in the Porsche Club and enjoy my Club experiences. Porsche own-ers/club members who don’t actively participate are missing out on some great experiences!

February 12th Club MeetingThe February meeting of the Musik Stadt Region will be held on Tuesday night February 12th at the Pie in the Sky Restaurant in Cools Springs starting at 6:30pm. Pie in the Sky is located at 1770 Galleria Blvd. Ste A • Cool Springs, next To American Signature.

We are excited to have two guest speakers for this meeting. Landon Cammileri of Xtreme Window Tint and Paint Protection located at 3975 South Carothers Parkway in Franklin will share with us the latest information on window tinting and paint protection. Landon has 20 years experience in the industry and will be sharing his knowledge with us.

The Steve Parrish with Dent Proof who is also lo-cated at 3975 South Carothers Parkway in Franklin will share with us the latest in paintless dent removal, paint removal, scuff removal, minor scratch buffi ng and plastic headlight renewal.

The nice part is that both of the businesses are lo-cated in the same plaza which provides for one stop service. Both companies have been used by club members and are highly recommended.

The meeting will conclude with an update on the many upcoming events planned for this spring. So mark your calendar for February 12th and make plans to join us for an informative evening.

Take the TN-441 East Moores Lane Galleria Blvd. off of I-65 exit- #69. Take the Galleria Blvd. ramp, stay straight like you are headed to the mall, then turn left into parking lot just past Stoney River.

100 Porsches and Me is a road movie about Porsche enthusiasts - no, the Porsche obsessed. Who owns a Porsche and why? What is the history behind Porsche? Come and find out.

I was putting together a list of extra things I had done for, or to my 911 for a friend of mine, who just bought a 2008 C2S Cab. In doing so, it gave me an overview of what I had spent on the car last year. It took a fair amount of time and effort researching and acquiring those items that I either needed or wanted. I thought this might be useful for some of you, so I have submit-ted it as an article for the newsletter. I hope it helps.

1. Sunscreen for the windshield.

Covercraft Custom UV Shield Sun Shade and Cover-craft Sun Shade Storage Bag can be bought at Autoa-nything.com. It costs $59.90 delivered. This sun-shield is the best I have found. It is custom cut to fit the windshield. It has a hard insulation core that keeps the inside of the car several degrees cooler and re-ally helps reduce the heat on the dash and steering wheel. Before I started us-ing this shield, I could have cooked a chicken in my car. The shield accordion folds into a storage bag that fits flat on the back sill of the 911, or across the top of the folded down back seats.

2. Ipod hook-up through the car stereo.

The Neo ProLink MOST for Porsche comes from neo-caraudio.com. It costs $649.99 delivered. Installation at Thoroughbred Motorcars was $198. This system works with all 911s, Boxsters, and Caymans that are 2005 or newer without navigation. They may have other offerings for older cars or those with nav; you would need to check their website for a complete of-fering. I had the dealer install mine, however it comes with complete instructions and can be owner installed. This thing works great. All of the commands that ap-pear on an ipod appear on the center nav screen. It is controlled using the audio buttons and knobs on the dash. I have my entire music library in my car and it sounds very good. One note here; I record my music at the highest transfer rate I can which creates larger files, but provides better fidelity. One other note: until you become very familiar with the operation of this unit, it is best to set up your play list before you start

EXTRA, EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT IT!by Musik-Stadt member Rick Arnemann

driving, or have your passenger do it. I have found that messing with the commands can be very distracting.

3. Side marker lenses

Clear side marker lenses part numbers 997-631-033-01 and 997-631-034-01 from parkplacetexas.com. They cost $56.98 delivered. Stock US delivered Porsches come with amber side marker lights, and de-pending on the color of your car, this either looks fine or not. Mine looked not. The clear side markers are stock on all European Porsches. The changeover was simple. Following the directions in the car’s manual, it took me 15 minutes to change over both of them. This is strictly a cosmetic change, but for me worth every penny.

4. Invisible bra

Digicut Systems Invisible Bra installed by Bobby Cox (phone #330-2518) for the front bumper and lenses on the current 911 cost $315. For the fenders, mirrors, and hood, add an additional $140. His pricing var-ies according to the car and the complexity of

the installation. This is a clear plastic cover that goes over the front of the car, covering the bumper. It can also cover the headlights, turn signal/fog lights, front fenders, part or all of the hood, and the side mirrors. I have used it to cover the front bumper and lights on my C2S. To date, no one has been able to tell I have a clear bra on the car without me pointing it out to him or her. I had one of these on a 04’ BMW X5 which I put on the car when it was new. The X5 has close to 80,000 miles on it and the paint looks like new.

If you plan on putting one of these on your car there are a few things to keep in mind. If you have a late model 911 do not use the 3M product. I bought this first and tried to install it myself. It was a disaster; I couldn’t get it to fit to save my life. Next I took it to Steven of Steven’s Auto Body. He is a perfectionist, and works on some of the finest cars I have ever seen. He had my car in his shop for several days and at-

Page 11: Banquet 2008! - musikstadtpca.orgmusikstadtpca.org/newsletters/2008/Feb2008.pdf · who helped make those events possible and keep Musik-Stadt active. Allan Cox, our PCA Zone 3 Representative,

February 2008

www.musikstadtpca.org

tempted to install it himself, he failed.

It was only then that I employed Bobby Cox to do the job. So be warned, the 997 Porsche has several com-pound curves that make this installation a nightmare. It takes a real specialist who knows what he is doing to get it installed right on these cars. Booby did a great job.

5. License plate surround.

Polished aluminum license plate bracket with Porsche logo #PNA 702-009-00 from Thoroughbred Motor-cars. It cost $46.98. I did it just in case the car I passed didn’t know what just smoked him.

6. Short shifter/Solid linkage.

Agency Power Linkage Porsche 996/997, part #AP-996-300 from vividracing.com. Cost for solid linkage is $130.68 delivered. B&M Precision Short Shifter for Porsche 996/997 model #45135 also from vividracing.com. Cost $278.05 delivered. Installation for both from Music City P&A was $170.50. The stock shifter and linkage is fine for ev-eryday use, but based on my track expe-rience, it become very vague at speed. The short shifter is designed to shorten the through of the shift stick from 20% to 30%. The solid linkage replaces the cable linkage, and should make gear changes more pre-cise. On more then one occasion, I have found myself searching for third gear, when up shifting from sec-ond. Instead of accelerating out of the corner, I ended up coasting with the clutch in, frantically looking for third. This I am hoping is the answer. Driving it out of the shop it was stiff and a little hard to shift, but as I drive it, it seems to free up a bit. The position of the shifter seems a little higher then stock. I don’t know if this is a fact or a figment of my imagination, but it ap-pears to fits my hand and arm better then before. I was going to take it to Road Atlanta on January 18th and 19th but they cancelled the event because of snow. I’ll ring it out at Barber in March, stay tuned…

7. Extra set of wheels.

Aftermarket Carrera Classic Full Polish (2) 19x8 and (2) 19x11, (4) center caps and (20) lug nut covers from wheeldynamics.com, these wheels were set with Mi-chelin PS2 tires for a delivered cost of $3,239. The wheels alone were $1,129, plus the polishing charge of about $400 and delivery. Having an extra set of wheels can be handy if you change to winter tire, or participate in track events. I like these because they are pressure cast, like the OEM wheels, and they are either TUV or JWL certified. I use these wheels for the road and the OEM wheels for the track, which is why I had them polished. They are indistinguishable from stock, except for the polishing. These are not the cheapest aftermarket wheels. They are well-made and much less than buying original equipment wheels from Porsche.

8. Extra set of tires.

Michelin Pilot Sport II Cup 2 305/30R19 and 2 235/35R19, they came from tirerack.com. They cost $1,692.91 deliv-ered. Mounting and balancing was done at Thoroughbred motor-cars at a cost of $199.48 for a total of $1,892.39.

These are the best DOT track tires I have ever used. They are very predictable, and give plenty of warn-ing before they break loose. They are not as sticky as slicks (think Hoosiers), but they are the best choice if you plan on driving to and from the track on the same tires you’re going to race on. Oh wait, we don’t race, we take “driver’s education.” They should be good for 5 to 8 days on the track.

9. Fire extinguisher.

Safecraft 2.5 lb Halon Fire Extinguisher and Safecraft Billet fire extinguisher mount. I bought these two items at livermoreperformance.com. They cost $321.54 de-livered, and the installation was done at Thoroughbred Motors for $196. A fire extinguisher isn’t for every-one, and this one is expensive. Since I participate in

Page 12: Banquet 2008! - musikstadtpca.orgmusikstadtpca.org/newsletters/2008/Feb2008.pdf · who helped make those events possible and keep Musik-Stadt active. Allan Cox, our PCA Zone 3 Representative,

February 2008

www.musikstadtpca.org

PCA track days “Driver’s Education”, and some of the local clubs that sponsor these events require a hard mounted (metal to metal) fire extinguisher, I had one installed. What I like about the Safecraft is that it is the only unit I have found that will mount to the power seat base of the passenger’s seat. Most extinguishers including Porsche’s mount to the driver’s seat base, and many do not work on power seats. If you have ever lived with this configuration and used your car on a regular basis, you know what a pain in the ass, or should I say, heal, ankle, and shin it is. On the pas-sengers side I don’t have to deal with it. I also like the Safecraft because it is made from billet aluminum, as is the mount, which looks really good. If it is go-ing to stay in the car, it makes a very nice impression. It is also available in two or three colors, as well as chrome. The fire extinguisher mount can be owner-in-stalled, but take note that the technician who put mine in had to modify the bracket to get it to fit correctly.

10. Reusable Track Numbers.

Vinyl reusable racecar numbers from solotime.com. Six 2-color 12” numbers cost $116.90 delivered. Most track day events require that numbers be placed on both sides of the car in a contrasting color. You can buy numbers and letter packages that are cheaper; these are ideal for SCCA auto crossing. PCA rules only require 8” numbers but I think they look pretty anemic on the car. The 12” numbers are as large as Solo Time offers. The numbers I purchased are two-tone which makes them more expensive, but allows them to stand out from the car color better. I bought three numbers because when you apply for a track event you are not guaranteed your first number choice for your car. Al-most all events ask for a first second and third number request. By having three different number options I have always received a number assignment that is in my selection. This is the only company that I know of that makes reusable car numbers specifically for the racetrack. The beauty of these numbers is that you can put them on the car at the track, take them off when the weekend is over, and then reuse them again at the next event. Depending on the number of events you participate in, they should last for a couple of seasons. One other positive is that they don’t come off at high speed like magnetic numbers or static cling numbers can. I have had my car up to 140 mph on track, and they stayed in place all weekend.

11. Lap-belt Tightener

CG Lock from cg-lock.com, these cost $99.37 deliv-ered for a set of 2. These are great if you have stock seats and plan to do any autocrosses, track days, or DE’s. According to PCA rules, if you have a 4, 5, or 6-point harness you must have a seat designed to accept that harness. In other words, if the seat was not manu-factured with shoulder harness holes and lap belt holes built into it, you cannot use shoulder harnesses. An-other issue is that for most of these events, they require that both the driver and passenger seats be fitted with the same restraint. Unless you’re driving a GT or GT3 and want to stay in your seat, you need to refit your car with aftermarket seats that meet these standards, or you can do what I did. The CG-Locks tightens the lap belt part of the seatbelt holding the lower body firmly in place. Don’t get me wrong the CG-Locks are not as good as a 5-point harness by any stretch of the imagination. When it come to sound driver restraint systems, nothing comes close to a multipoint harness, but the CG-Locks are much better than the stock seat-belt systems that came on your car. Another nicety about them is that they can be installed and removed before and after an event very easily. Well, that’s it. It’s easy to spend a pile of money on these cars for aftermarket stuff and not see a major change in their appearance. I don’t regret anything I’ve done, but it does remind me of sailboat racing. Spend a few hun-dred dollars on parts and walk out with a bag just big enough to hold a sandwich.
