BETHANIA & J FRANCIS ROBERTS & SON continued from page 1With so many chapels being closed in the area, we believe byconserving this part of our local heritage we can safeguard a spacefor local people to come together to celebrate both life and death. The Chapel is non-denominational, so we can accommodate all ofthe community, should they choose to hold a service at Bethania. We feel it creates a wonderful link letting the grandchildren andgreat grandchildren of families who worshiped there celebratemilestone events in their local chapel. The building is now availableto hire for Wedding Blessings, Renewal of Wedding Vows andFuneral Services. For call information tel 01978 810 884 or email:[email protected]

Someone else who fondly recalls their wedding at Bethania isSusan Hughes of Daisy Chain. She said ‘It was a lovely day withDyfan marring us. My daughter had wanted to get married heretoo but we could not find out who to contact at the time. I am surethis will be welcomed by many people who have a long historywith the chapel and it looks really beautiful when you go inside’.

Gwenan & Michael Davies weremarried at Bethania. Gwenan said‘Dyfan was such a lovely man, madeour day so special and is sadly missed’.

IN THE BLOOD by PCSO RyanMy favourite part of my job by a country mile is talking to people. When I was only 4years old we moved away from this area and with the old man being a Prison Officerand moved around a bit. Swansea, then Shrewsbury, then St Martins. Growing upwe returned to Rhosymedre to see my Nain on Chapel Street most weekends, so Ihad a feel for the geography of Cefn/Rhosymedre/Plas Madoc/AcrefairMy Dad is very nostalgic about his childhood here, so we were brought up being dripfed propaganda all our young lives. I always thought this place was in my bones,he’d talk about Tommy Owens and Jock, Taids pals from Monsanto, his time in theband Ankers Away with the Rhosymedre lads, then I’d hear about his Taid Tom the

Blacksmith, how him and Gwilym Ivor (My Taid) would sit either side of the fire talking and without missing abeat spit their bacco into the fire, all the time speaking to each other in Welsh, my Dad (having no Welsh satthere spellbound). These people were alive to me.I felt like I belonged here because my Dads family was from here and thanks to the stories about oldcharacters and friends I felt like my Dads world was my world, like I’d inherited all his experiences. Mysiblings and I could probably relay anecdotes verbatim that we’ve been reared listening to (or subjected todepending on your viewpoint). The imagination is an amazing thing, when someone tells you a story youcan’t help but visualise the places and people. So before I began working here as an adult last year this partof the world was very much in my DNA, alive and kicking in my head, rich with Dads tall tales. Now I’m here working day in day out it is an absolute blessing to bump into people who knew my Taid, Nain,my Dad or any of our family, it is something which nourishes me. Having had something of a nomadicchildhood, I can feel my roots here, they are strong and tangible. I talk to Norma up by Rosa Terrace andshe talks about my uncle Trevor (who she’s pals with on facebook) , I’ve met tommy Owens lad Terry, whohas a picture of Tommy and the famous Jock on his wall! My Taid passed away when I was a boy and welived on Dinas in Plas Madoc, so it is always a huge thrill when I meet people who knew him. My favouriteso far has been when I was having a brew with Alvin and Kath on Ogwen and Alvin informed me thatGwilym Ivor was ‘Always cheating at doms but we could never catch him’. This vital information made mechuckle and I’ll be honest, a bit of tea nearly came out of my nose.Gwilym Ivor (my Taid) is known as G.I in our family, so it made me smile last week when I visited an old ladyin Rhosymedre who turned to me when I was describing my Dads family being from Plas Isaf and onhearing the letters G.I shouted ‘You belong to Gwilym Ivor’! Magic. Talking to the older people in ourcommunity is so important, they carry our history with them, our heritage. Take a bit of time out of your busyschedule when you can and just listen to them. Because you reach a time in your life when you’ll start toreminisce, when you’ve retired and you’re kids have moved out, things have changed and can be a bitdisconcerting. People can find comfort in their past, and I think that’s healthy aslong as we are embracingthe future at the same time. You can’t really understand how a place is what it is unless you know thejourney, and our older folk lived through it, they are the torch bearers.

My Uncle Trevor who left Rhosymedre over 50 years ago, can walk you through the Cefn and Rhosymedrelike nothing has changed, describing the old shops, the buildings, the people, it’s as if everything has beenpreserved from the minute he left in a little museum in his mind.

FREE FOOD - WHAT’S THE CATCH?Cefn Mawr Christian Fellowship offers FREE food -and fun and friendship - at several of its gatheringssuch as the monthly CAFÉCHURCH and SOCIAL…but surely there’s a catch? Got to be? NO? Really?Jesus once said to his followers: “Freely you havereceived, freely give”. So yep… it really is FREEwith NO STRINGS ATTACHED… except that wealso offer “FREE FOOD FOR THOUGHT”, invitingour guests to consider what we share about God’slove in fun and friendly ways.At a Social it’s 95% food, chatting with friends oldand new, and fun with table games and pool. But wedo have a few minutes when we share a simple“word” about God’s love for us all, often reflectingwhat we have thought about at CaféChurch elevendays earlier. At CaféChurch we have comedy videoclips, a non-religious topic to chat about… and cup-pas and cakes, of course. But we do have “food forthought” as well and we spend just a little longer thanat a Social sharing about the God made known inJesus, His Son. We also have a “prayer board”where anyone can place a request for God’s help forsomeone they love or seeking an answer to aproblem. But… to come along, share in the fun andfriendship, and the cuppas and cakes, YOU DON’THAVE TO BELIEVE IN GOD or comply with the“rules” (we don’t have any!!). We don’t make peoplestand up to sing or kneel to pray, or even join in thesimple closing prayers. We run CaféChurch around tables like a café so thatit is informal and unlike traditional church becausewe are seeking to offer CHURCH FOR PEOPLEWHO DON’T ‘DO’ CHURCH! We want it to be aseasy to walk in the door, get a cuppa, have a chat atone of the tables and enjoy a cake as going to anormal café - or even easier! Why not come alongand see if we’re getting it right? CaféChurch startsat 10.30am on the first Sunday of every month -cuppas available from 10.15am. Socials are on aThursday night eleven days later, from 7.00-9.00pm. Both events are held at the CRNCA Centre“The Old Canteen” beside Ysgol Cefn Mawr on BroGwilym. Everyone is welcome - all ages, all faithsand none! See the CaféChurch “advert” nearby orcall Paul on 01978 810761 if you want to find outmore about these events and/or our group.

PROBLEMATIC PARKINGThrough Community Engagement,North Wales Police have receivedreports of inconsiderate parking ofvehicles. Pavement parkedvehicles are a potentiallydangerous street obstructionwhich can force pedestrians to

walk along the road to bypass those vehicles. This isespecially problematic for pedestrians who are blindor visually impaired and may not see oncoming traffic;as well as wheelchair users, people with pushchairsand older people.Reports include vehicles across drop kerbs, too closeto other street furniture, parked half on pavementsand roads and in some cases vehicles parked fullyon the pavements. The vast majority of motorists park in a consideratemanner and only park on pavements where theremay be a valid reason, for example emergencies orloading; however, there is a minority of motorists whoappear to abandon their vehicles without anyconsideration for pedestrians.I will be monitoring problematic areas closely andtaking suitable action. PKC GROUP UPDATE

The current activity on the old warehouse site adjacent to the Trevor Basin is by CRT, Eastman’s and WCBC. Itis for what they have termed a “temporary parking facility” for the aqueduct. We have questioned this planningwith them directly and asked how this will benefit our community? After reading the planning applicationapproved by WCBC – P/2017/0888, it became obvious that only the aqueduct and Trevor Basin would beserved. The one way parking system, additional security fencing and parking meters will do nothing toencourage the spread of tourism into our surrounding community. Also with a price tag of an estimated £200Kwe ask, is this temporary?

This comes as a shock. We were hoping their proposed master planning as presented at the GEH etc. in 2017/18indicating the Windborne Gate as the central parking location for the area would be adopted. We have beenproposing WBG parking since 2012 as this is central to the whole area. Please see the December Issue (42).From the centre of the WBG it is 500mts to either the aqueduct or the village centre of Cefn Mawr. A simplesign at the WBG would help people visit our community as well as the aqueduct which is true sustainabledevelopment planning encouraging people to stay in our area longer.

Therefore we ask with all the positive opportunities WBG offers our community and the aqueduct includingimproving the general overall appearance of the area, why has our community been ignored again, and WelshPlanning Policy not been complied with? For more information on the WBG parking and all the benefits for ourcommunity please see the relevant documents available on our website on the LDP2 page. We would like tosupport the CRT, Eastman’s and WCBC with their present master planning, but they need to work with us aswell.
