Ysgol Rhiwabon Students plant Rocket Seeds from space.
Year 7 Students-Planting Rocket Seeds which have spent time in space
In September 2015, 2kg of rocket seeds were flown to the
International Space Station (ISS) on Soyuz 44S where they spent
several months in microgravity before returning to Earth in March
2016.
The seeds have been sent to schools, as part of Rocket Science, an
educational project launched by the RHS Campaign for School
Gardening and the UK Space Agency.
Ysgol Rhiwabon is one of up to 10,000 schools to receive a packet of
100 seeds from space, which we will grow alongside seeds that
haven‟t been to space, and measure the differences over seven

The Community Banking Debate Continues....
From: Derek French [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 18 May 2016 17:51 To: Mike Jones Subject: Re: Ruabon HSBC
Mike, Thanks for updating me. Very sadly the letter from HSBC is not unexpected but it is not altogether clear whether he is offering, for what it is worth, to meet with you
and others in your locality or his! The two Daily Mail pieces I was of course aware of and they followed a longer piece in the Financial Times (attached) which talks about the neutral branch sharing option which we have advocated, and costed for many years. Indeed on our website (REPORTS) is the presentation we made at the House of Commons in November 2007. The banks have consistently declined to take this further and although the Westminster Government (Treasury and BIS Ministers) sought their proposals in February last year, the banks have effectively ignored the request (putting all their eggs in the post office option) and Ministers have failed to follow it up. We do talk to G4S on this subject from time to time. I do think the community should input to the independent review of the Access to Banking Protocol being carried out by Professor Russell Griggs, and we would like you to do so. The relevant press release, with e mail and postal contacts, dated 6 May is on the BBA website. Let me know if you have any difficulty in locating it. What is particularly disappointing in the HSBC reply is the closed mind. Even if they do not want to consider the shared branch option, but the G4S announcement suggests otherwise, they appear to have a closed mind to ideas emerging from other communities such as ‘community banks’ like those in Australia. Altogether too dismissive of customers and communities in my view. If your MP and or Welsh Assembly members want a copy of our comprehensive list of communities in Wales affected by closures from 2003 to 2016 let me know. Best regards Derek www.communitybanking.org.uk **

Thank you to Yvonne Evans for the following ‘Latest Scams’ Report:-
Telephone Cold Caller - Claiming to be from BT A resident has received a telephone cold call from a person claiming to be from BT. The
caller stated that there was a problem with the residents internet and asked for the resident to
switch on the computer and allow them remote access. The resident IS a customer of BT but
was aware of this type of telephone scam. The resident asked the caller to confirm their
address, which they did. The resident then asked for the account holders name, which they
got wrong. The resident refused them access and contacted BT who informed them that that it
was a scam. BT also suggested a good way of checking the authenticity of a telephone cold
caller would be to ask the caller to provide the residents mothers ‘maiden’ name. Although,
in this instance the caller claimed to be from BT, scam calls are received from persons
claiming to be from many internet service providers. Click on the link below for advice from
Action Fraud; http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/fraud-az-microsoft-frauds
Be aware of – ‘Telephone Number Spoofing’ Please remember if you have caller ID –
scammers can easily access technology to change the number that appears on caller display
on your phone to a legitimate number from an organisation.
Telephone Cold Call – ‘Car Accident Line’: A resident has received a telephone cold call
from a company stating he had been involved in a car accident. The resident hadn’t. The call
was terminated. This scam can present itself in varying forms. The telephone caller could
claim that the resident was entitled to an amount of money following an ‘accident’ sometime
ago and they could be asked to pay an up-front fee via cash vouchers (ie Western
Union/UKash). No ‘pay out’ would be received. It could be an attempt to obtain personal, or
bank details. DO NOT pass any personal information to telephone cold callers – e.g. date of
birth, bank details Do NOT agree to purchase vouchers or agree to money transfers to
unknown persons – e.g. Western Union/ UK Cash Vouchers
Doorstep Caller – ‘Entitled to free LED lights’ A resident had a cold caller at their door
recently, who claimed that they had cavity walled the resident’s house previously and they
were entitled to free LED lights. The resident was concerned that this was a ‘ruse’ to access
their property. We would like to remind residents not to allow access to their property to a
cold caller. Remember, identity badges may NOT always be genuine. If the cold caller
claims to be from a service provider of yours, and is requesting access always keep the cold
caller outside until you have made contact with the service provider using a telephone
number obtained from a trusted source NOT from a number provided by the cold caller.
Scam E Mail – ‘Notice to appear in Court’: A business has received a number of e mails
stating that they were requested to appear in court. The e mail gave a date for the appearance
and asked the recipient to read the attached information which contained the ‘offence
information’ and ‘court address’. There are a number of emails in circulation of this nature
and if the file is downloaded it can contain an exe.file (a file that executes when clicked),
containing a virus. Click on the below link from Action Fraud for more
information.http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/alert-notice-to-appear-in-court-email-scam-
