Every once in a while the government herepasses out an order banning shop keepersfrom providing plastics to customers forcarrying their purchases, with little lastingeffect. Plastics are very popular with bothretailers as well as consumers because theyare cheap, strong, lightweight, functional, aswell as a hygienic means of carrying food aswell as other goods. Even though they are oneof the modern conveniences that we seem tobe unable to do without, they are responsiblefor causing pollution, killing wildlife, and usingup the precious resources of the earth.
About a hundred billion plastic products are used each year in the US alone. Andthen, when one considers the huge economies and populations of India, China, Europe, and other parts of the world, the numbers can be staggering. The problem is further
exacerbated by the developed countries shipping off their plastic waste to developingcountries like India.

Single-use plastics have become such aubiquitous way of life that it seems as if we
simply cannot do without them. However, if
we have the will, we can start reducing their
use in small ways.
A tote bag can make a good substitute for
holding the shopping. You can keep the bag
with the cahier, and then put your purchases
into it instead of the usual plastic bag.
Recycling the plastic items you already
have is another good idea. These can come
into use for various purposes, like holdingyour garbage, instead of purchasing new
ones.
While governments may be working out
ways to lessen the impact of plastics on the
environment, however, each of us should
shoulder some of the responsibility for thisproblem, which ultimately harms us.

Every year, around 500 billion
(500,000,000,000) plastic products are
used worldwide. So many that over one
million products are being used every
minute and they're damaging our
environment. India's plasticsconsumption is one of the highest in the
world. Yet, precious little has been done
to recycle, re-use and dispose of plastic
waste. Plastic products are difficult and
costly to recycle and most end up on
landfill sites where they take around 300years to photo degrade. They break down
into tiny toxic particles that contaminate
the soil and waterways and enter the food
chain when animals accidentally ingest
them. But the problems surrounding
waste plastic items starts long beforethey photo degrade.

Animals and sea creatures are hurt and killedevery day by discarded plastic bags - a deadturtle with a plastic bag hanging from its mouthisn't a pleasant sight but mistaking plastic bagsfor food is commonplace amongst marineanimals. Plastic clogs their intestines and leadsto slow starvation. Others become entangled inplastic bags and drown. Because plastic bagstake hundreds of years to break down, everyyear our seas become 'home' to more and more
bags that find their way there through oursewers and waterways. Given India's poorgarbage collection facilities, tons of plasticproducts litter the roads, preventing rainwaterfrom seeping into the ground. Hundreds of cowsdie in New Delhi alone every year when they
choke on plastic bags while trying to eatvegetable waste stuffed in the garbage.

Several countries have already banned their use and morewill doubtless follow. Several Indian states such asMaharashtra, Dehli, Punjab, Rajasthan, Himanchal Pradesh,Goa etc. banned their use. Mumbai's storm water drainagechoking with accumulated plastics waste, making the floods
unmanageable, is an old story. The Environment Ministry hasbanned manufacture and use of plastics carry bags less than8 inches X 12 inches in size 20 micron in width. The ministryhas also asked State Governments to register all plasticsmanufacturing unit, so that these can be regulated. However, the implementation of the order has been tardy, evident fromthe large number of polythene bags strewn in every major
town and city. The alternative to plastic bags are paper bags, jute bags andcloth bags. Paper, Jute and Cloth are eco-friendly. Jute bagsare most suitable substitute then paper and cloth, because itis cheaper then cloth and reusable. Though paper bags arecheaper then jute bags but less durable. The West BengalGovernment, which has decided to ban plastic bags in Kolkata
and other prominent towns and cities in the State, intends tomake use of jute bags mandatory through suitable legislation

Teenagers use them to sneak beer into concerts. Morning commuters sip
juice from them. Vendors save on containers by slopping everything from
salads to bulk shampoo into them.
This smog-choked metropolis of 20 million has a red hot love affair with the
plastic bag, and its about to take on a shade of green. The government is
banning stores from packing up goods in free, non-biodegradable bags as itslatest environmental endeavor after adding bike lanes, low-emissions buses
and an ambitious recycling program.
Major retailers already are responding, though the law passed in March
and signed in August gives them a year to comply. [...]
Mexico City joins San Francisco, New Delhi and a growing number of cities
around the world restricting use of plastic bags, which the U.N. says areamong the most pervasive types of ocean litter. Just producing the
petroleum-based bags pumps tons of carbon emissions into the air.

The results of such bans have been mixed.
Roughly two years later, a ban affecting large
supermarket chains and pharmacies in San
Francisco has cut plastic bag distribution by
more than 50 percent, according to the citys
environment department. But a Seattle banwas challenged by the plastics industry in
court and overturned last month in an
industry-financed referendum.
The new law complements the citys efforts to
turn one of the planets biggest and messiest
waste-management systems into the greenestin Latin America, if not the developing world.
Mexico City only recycles about 6 percent of
the 12,500 tons of trash it generates daily
but aims to compost or burn for energy 85
percent of it by 2013.
When this happens, Mexico City will be thesecond-largest city in the Western

1. Allow use of 20 micron thick plastic bags( minimum thickness)2. For prevention on manufacture of thinner bags the manufacturers ofthese bags should be asked to print their names/addresses. This will allownot let the manufacturers of thinner films/bags escape easily.3. The municipality, with the help of plastic industry develops more efficientdisposal and collection systems.4. The municipality should set up many disposal collection bins at public placesand develop an efficient system of collecting the disposed plastic productsfrom these bins.5. The municipality should set up an incineration project to utilize the wasteplastic products as they have inherently very high energy.6. The Government should develop a mass campaign to educate the commonmass.7. The Government in collaboration with the plastic industry should developan education module that can be taught to the students in all public schools.
