H.;W, 062691, U.:::.JJ, Corruilil!lding Officer, U.;:,.,). 11-l.OO . .:::J:JG uT!I.JT (CVE-ll6) was CTE 95.11, ComrHund.::r l!:...r1·ier dement, 1iest Co...:.st Blockade and Patrol Group. Th<> U.0.b. &..OOENG STR.r~.IT (CV.i.-ll6) operatBd as a unit of T,J:i; 95.11. Ships assigned CT:;.t 95.11 as scre"'n WioJTcl the U.0.3. hiCKOX (DJ)...673), u.s.s. WI.SEJ.'ltl.N (DE-677), li,h.S, CO!'lUS (D-20), and H.l1,C.o. lklDrt (DDE-215). The screen varied from two to four ships as scr..:"'n ships wer.;o d~:;;te.ch~d to CTE 95.12 for night patrols.

B. JJuring the pt:riod of this report the U.b.u. :a,,DJEliJG b~r.tL-..IT (C..'V~ll6) op+::lr ... t~:~d off t[.Lt;J Wdst coast of Korw in accordanc~ with CTG 95.1 Operation Order 2-52. During daylight llOurs, t11e carri&r r(;:rnain0d in the gendral vicinity of 37°20 1N l24°40 1E Lilld retir~::d southwo.rd during the night.

C. Thl:l g ... n"rw.l mission of th0 Unit<;:d Nations Forc<:s opur-~ting off the Viest coast of Kor<>D. is blockade of the Kor~;;an itYo.:JSt Coc:.st. This blockade is pcrform~d by putrol snips of CT~ 95.12, CfE 95.11 aircraft ~nd scre~ning silips, o.nd by the troops on occupi<;:d islands, n. group of fivc islJ.Uds stretching from th::; Han liiv<>r <;:Stuary in the 0outh to the Ta~;~dong estu,J.ry in the North "'re so occupied ani obtain infonrntion by rad::.r, friendly ag .. mts and guerrilla .1ction. In performing these tasks, CTE 95,11 maintained, during daylight hours two d.::fensive C .. D. The full poto:lntial of the S{'lip and squ .. dron could not ·be realized during t.U.s pc..trol because of a shortage of c..ircr,lft, ·.lith an operating allowance of 24 F4U model aircraft, the~·e wer"' never more thc.:.n twGnty aboard ship. • • • OECLASSIFIEO F • O'n the 21st of November the troops on >::oUNWI-LO reported having been heil.vily shelled from the wa.inland which is only about 1000 yards away and reque&ted an air strike. .Jecause of the aircraft shortage and corru,Qttments elsewh~re it was decided to arm the two plane CAP with l~apalm &'l.d rockets fo:t strikes in this nei:irby area. All except .UAWN and DU~CAP wore so armed for t! remainder of the patrol. The Task .:J.ement closed the islands to the extent practicable in order to rct~in voice contact and control of the CAP througho~t the strikes. The napalm strikes on the mainland appeared to be highly successful as fri<:mdly troops I'dported firciS burning for twelve hours after th<:J initial strike with sever~:~.l S<OlCondary explosions. It was reported that morale of fri,_,ndly troops was im,:Jroved lOOJo by the strikes. N~:!"'dh:ss to say. this accomplishJlffit was t::qually bo:;neficial to the mora.lt:: of the pilots of Vl'u>.-312 and th<.:~ ships personn~l..

G, rmoth<>r reqw::Jst for air strikt:s was received on 23 i~ov2lJD.ber when frhmdl;, forces on the mainland occupying the mountainous ter:..·ain of }oint CHANGSOIJGOT (.XC 4522) reported being undt::!r att.ack by lOv ent;my troops. The TARCAP assign..;d to C'l'U 95.12.1 W<;~.S rt:lcased to hit this area i:ind also to airspot fo:: the surface ship assigned. Low lt:vel attacks were rrad<:: on reported on,_;my ir·· stallat.wns but identifiCdtion of targ.rt.s and da.Jlkl.g<:l assesm•:mt was difficult bo::cause of the rug5<::d terrain <1nd heavy ground cover ~ich exists in that ar A subsc:qudnt report frout frit:aldly troops, howevor, reported tha.t the corrloin·~( attack r..;:p.,lled the enemy ..tlo sustained losses of 12 h.IA and 9 oiiA. There were no friendly casualties.

H.. Tht;J d1Counter betwden six corsairs £Jild two l•liGs is noted hscn.us~ the apparent success of thw deicnsive ta.ctics ®played. The six corso.irs of a strike group :Oaci just r~covered from their initial attack on a pr~-briefed ti..l.rget on 28 i~ovember when the 2 1-J.!Gs starto;:d making a series of thrc~ firing runs from overhv~d dUd asternw Fiv~ cors~irs asswaed a tight circular t.J.il chuse formation at low altitudi:l, in dccordc.:.nce hd.th squadron doctrine, the 6th aircraft being sepcl.rated and t.m<:.ble to join. This latter aircraft took tlVasive action from tht> h.IG on his t:.;.il by thr<:::ad:ing t:1rough the passes betwdon tn"" hills at dn i;;:Jdr.:;:.-.aely low ..lltitudd. Two cor·sa.irs of the larger group wt~r<.:> abl<;;: to bring t!ltdr rocko;jts to bt;l""r and fir<=<d eight iNAH.s in the gclleral dir.,ction of onu ~.W:G which then broku off action. Five corsairs in a t<:::.il chase proved to be too largd a group c.i.Dd subsdqu~::nt deep strike sorti"'s have becl'l ma.intc.ined at four 2.ircraft or multiples of four in ord~r tn...:.t aircro.it cun JOin-up in a tig.'1t circle with all plan<:s in a steeply bunked turn.

I. The policy of intt:rchu.nging officers with .H:.L .• b. G-LVRY (CVL-19) and scre~ning ships of TE 95.11 for f~~iliarizi..!.tion and training purposes was continued during ti1is patrol.

J. il. note worthy feature of this period was the prevailing flyable weather, JUrll1g the nine consecutive days of the patrol, all scheduled flights were perfor;liCd without intcruption from weather or other caustos.
