The Galloping GourmetLevel: Easy • Time: OK, it’s not really a walk, but take as much time as you need!

Breakfast: The Sannd Trap Bar N’ Grill at the Comox Golf Course opens at 8am for homestyle bacon and eggs. If you are a fan of Eggs Benny, Smitty’s Family Restaurant is the place for you. Lunch: Church Street Bakery (on Church St.) features woodfired oven baked artisan bread for sandwiches and pizza. Gluten free too. Try their famous Cumberland donuts! Sushi Kobo on Comox Ave. rolls up the best sushi in town. Make sure to try the Tako balls, fresh rolls and sashimi platters. Choose take-out and picnic in Marina Park. Rocky Mountain Café serves up home made soups, gourmet deli sandwiches and of course those decadent cinnamon bunsThe Blackfin Pub on Port Augusta St. offers a West Coast Classic lunch with seating on the deck overlooking Comox Bay. Their Black-ened Salmon Salad or daily specials are highly recommended. The Sannd Trap Bar N’ Grill at the Golf Club on Balmoral St. will leave you satisfied with Bald Eagle Burgers and Fish Tacos. Smitty’s o n Comox Ave. features gourmet burgers with a special blend of local Gunter’s beef. Open for lunch or dinner, Spice Hut Indian Cuisine’s coconut naan and fish curry always hit the mark. Coffee: The Komox Grind on Beaufort Ave. brews up serious-ly good coffee and teas and is a great spot to sit and relax inside or outside. Café Amantes on Comox Ave. is an ideal setting for certi-fied organic fair trade specialty lattés. Comox Valley Ice Cream: Benino’s Gelato serves up delicious Gelato, made fresh with Island Farms milk and local BC fruit. Sample the Panna Cotta and the Coco-nut gelato. Dairy free, sugar free options available. Smitty’s is a good choice for old-fashioned milk shakes and soft serve cones from their pickup window. Dinner: Martine’s Bistro European ambi-ance - known all over the Comox Valley for their calamari and rack of lamb! Toscano’s Trattoria local Italian flaire... Caesar salad and unique daily offerings are the perfect combination! And right next door is Mise En Place - tapas and small plates where people meet, socialize and have fun! The Blackfin Pub - Casual West Coast dining serving local Island beers on tap and you must try their famous fresh seafood chowder and Komo Gqay Oysters.

The Goose GrindLevel: More strenuous • Time: 90 minutes

If you are starting this walk after 10:30 am, fuel up at Church St. Bakery with a famous Cumberland donut. Head East on Comox Ave.and turn left on Donovan Drive, following it to Balmoral Ave. Turn right on Balmoral and continue through the 4-way stop, it turns into Hawkins Road. Stay on the path on the right hand side of Hawkins for the majority of the walk to Goose Spit Park where the path crosses over to the other side of the road. Little Alpaca Farm is on your right as you approach the Spit. Stroll the beach and enjoy magnificent views of Sandy Island, Hornby and Denman Islands and Vancouver Island’s

Beaufort Mountain Range. Options: Walk around the Spit to another 3.5 km seaside walk that’s well worth it. Take the Stairway to Heaven 168 steps... straight up! Enjoy the view, catch your breathe and then walk left on Yates Road to Hawkins Drive. From here you can head back to Comox. If you are up for more vertical follow the narrow blackberry trail straight up to Nirvana for the most incredible ocean views! You’ll come out at Moore Road, home to an Arthur Erickson designed home on the right (private). Head down Moore Road and left onto Walter Gage Road. Take the walking path, it will take you out onto Hawkins Road. As you make your way back on Balmoral Ave. (pass the tennis courts), stop in for a bite at the Comox Golf Club’s Sannd Trap Bar N’ Grill for a chicken club or Quesada.

The Tree Hugger’s TrekLevel: Moderate • Time: 90 minutes

Start your trek with a coffee from Café Amantes or an ice cream cone from Smitty’s. Walk down Comox Ave. to Filberg Park. The park is home to over 37 species of trees including ancient Elm and Maples and majestic Cedar and Douglas Fir. If the gate is open stroll through the park, coming out at Filberg Road. Take a left on Filberg Rd. to Comox Ave. Turn right on Comox Ave. and go to the end of the road, entering Mack Laing Park. Head down the trail over a little bridge that leads to the ocean. Goose Spit is on your left with views of HMCS Quadra, Cadet Base, Comox Bay, the Beaufort Mountains and the Comox Glacier. Take a left and walk under the Pier. Walk along another 100 feet or so (stepping over the driftwood logs), you’ve now arrived at the MacDonald Woods Boardwalk. MacDonald Woods is a second growth forest. The trail follows the stream bed and comes out at the bottom of Croteau Road. Take the walking path on the left and stay on this as it winds along

the outside edge of the park and Croteau Road. You’ll come out at the corner of Balmoral Ave. and Croteau. Turn left onto Balmoral Ave. and walk along the road to the crosswalk. Take the stairs down to see the Brooklyn Creek Fish Ladders. You are now back in Mack Laing Park. Stay left through the park and follow the trail back to the park opening. Continue along Comox Ave. and turn left on Stewart Ave. Stroll Beaufort Ave. for great views of the Marina. Pass Comox Town Hall, walk up Ellis and finish your walk on Comox Ave and reward yourself with a delicious gelato.

Use this guide to discover some of the favourite shops, eateries and trails in Comox, BC. Visitors to downtown Comox are delighted with the natural beauty, the charm, and the wide array of amenities - all within easy walking distance.

Follow The Artist’s EyeLevel: Moderate • Time: 2 hours plus

Begin your artistic adventure at the Anglican Church (corner of Church St. and Comox Ave.). Heading left towards the downtown core be sure to stop at Blue Heron Books to browse their unique selections of locally made arts and crafts including art, pottery and a great collection of books including an extensive selection of Vancouver Island subject matter. Just up the street is the Pearl Ellis Gallery featuring many original Vancouver Island and local works of art. Take some time to visit the Comox Archives and Museum and learn about the history of the Town. Continuing on, grab a gelato at Benino Gelato or a birdseed cookie from Rocky Mountain Café. Continue down Comox Ave. to Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park. Meander through the gardens in this nine-acre heritage park. Visit the Filberg Lodge, Gift Shop, seaside Summer Kitchen and of course, the beach. Walk back to ‘downtown’ Comox for dinner on the ocean view deck at Martine’s Bistro on Beaufort Ave. and enjoy the sculptures and the featured artists’ works.

Visiting The DockLevel: Easy • Time: 45 minutes

Start this walk at Blue Heron Books on Comox Ave. and take the pedestrian walkway around the corner of the shop that leads down to Comox Town Hall or stroll down Church St. to the Komox Grind and grab a fresh made smoothie or rich delicious coffee. Turn onto Wilcox and walk (past Comox Town Hall) to the Marina Park parking lot. Keep going and look right for the start of the Marina Park Walkway (close to the Harbour Quay condos). Take the walkway loop around the condos. If the gate is open to Comox Municipal Marina, stroll the marina slips and have a look at the sailboats and luxury yachts moored here. Take time to enjoy the new Rotary Splash Park and Playground. Continue along Marina Walkway and over to the Comox Harbour Promenade and take in the incredible views. Back track to Comox Fisherman’s Wharf and check out the fleet of commercial fishing boats. A great place to buy fresh caught

seafood! Head back into town up Port Augusta Ave. and stop in for some-thing delicious at the Blackfin Pub for some of the best halibut and chips you’ve ever had.

The Shopper’s StrollStart at the West end of Comox Ave. at Ellis St. and explore a great mix of locally-owned shops including Simon’s Cycles for bikes, apparel and accessories. Blue Heron Books for local books, pottery, nautical charts, journals and art cards. You’ll find unique fine jewelry at Jules By The Bay. Duduza Bed and Bath is Comox’s home and bedding shop. Nearly New Books is a must-browse used bookstore carrying recent best sellers at great prices. Mercedes Lane Boutique offers fabulous fashions and accessories for the stylish woman. Planet Kids has a wonderful assortment of children’s clothing and toys. Coast Surf Shop is a west coast surfer style unisex shop with clothes and surf apparel. The Village Yarn Shoppe is a knitter’s paradise. Fuel Stop: The best sushi (#1 on TripAdvisor for Comox) at Sushi Kobo . Head to the Comox City Centre Mall and browse The Cottage Clothing Company, home to an eclectic assort-ment of women’s and men’s clothing. Sea Breeze Boutique is fun to shop with many unique fashions and home décor items. District Denim carries the latest in fashionable and functional denim. And find great deals at Comox Valley’s newest and biggest Dollarama. Don’t forget Fido! Stop in at Woofy’s for pet treats, accessories or the DIY doggy bath. For those who are not shoppers, head directly to the Comox Golf Course where tee time reservations are not always needed.

Downtown Comox This wonderful destination offers a wide range of services, unique shops, and enticing restaurants, cafes and pubs for all to enjoy. There is also a golf course, beautiful parks and gardens, spectacular beaches and a new Comox Rotary Splash Park and Playground for the kids in Marina Park.

Comox Community EventsFilberg Festival This event features more than 120 of the best artisans from across Canada and a stellar lineup of performers. Plenty of great food is available in this forested seaside setting.

Comox Nautical Days BC Day August Long Weekend Bring the entire family to this FREE Festival of Family Fun in Comox Marina Park. Festivities include nautical demonstrations and competitions, many food vendors, outstanding local entertainers, more than 100 craft booths and an BC Day Fireworks Extravaganza.
