In June 2003, Government launched “People and Place – A strategy for Neighbourhood Renewal”. This long term(7 – 10 year) strategy targets those communities throughout Northern Ireland suffering the highest levels ofdeprivation. Neighbourhood Renewal is a cross government strategy and aims to bring together the work of allGovernment Departments in partnership with local people to tackle disadvantage and deprivation in all aspects ofeveryday life.Neighbourhoods in the most deprived 10% of wards across Northern Ireland were identified using the Noble MultipleDeprivation Measure. Following extensive consultation, this resulted in a total of 36 areas, and a population ofapproximately 280,000 (one person in 6 in Northern Ireland), being targeted for intervention. The areas include:

15 in Belfast 6 in Londonderry and 15 in other towns and cities across Northern Ireland

Neighbourhood Partnerships have been established in each Neighbourhood Renewal Area as a vehicle for localplanning and implementation. Each Neighbourhood Partnership should include representatives of key political, statutory, voluntary, community and private sector stakeholders. Together, they have developed long term visionsand action plans designed to improve the quality of life for those living in the area.

Gregory highlights: “The support from the Regional Start Initiative definitely helped me get my business started. The business advisors gave me guidance every step of the way and really gave me the confidence and equipped mewith essential business experience. The Programme has helped me develop my business plan, to set targets andmake informed decisions about my business direction.”

Gregory specialises in First Aid Courses for Sports Clubs educating participants on how best to administer supportto those who have suffered a sporting injury. “The advice I would give to other people thinking of starting a business is take the first step by talking to a localbusiness advisor. Challenge yourself and give it a try, and if for any reason it doesn’t work at least you had theopportunity rather than regretting a missed opportunity," Gregory added.

Starting A Business

Zoe highlights: “The Regional Start Initiative definitely helped me to prepare to start my new business. The one toone mentoring with the Ballymena Business Centre business advisor was supportive and reassuring; I was able tobounce ideas off the business advisor and learn about different aspects of starting a new business. I now have ahigher level of confidence and a greater understanding of business finance in particular how to price my serviceand how to analyse my cash flow.

“The business plan has enabled me to set targets and to help me monitor if the business is on the right path. The£1,500 NEET’s grant assistance for young persons who are not in Employment, Education or Training, was veryuseful as it has provided essential financial support for my business and helped me to buy in stock and pay for rentand other start up business expenses.

“The advice I would give to other young entrepreneur’s is to follow your instincts, do a personal survival budget beforestarting in business, make sure you have the right funds available to start your business and seek professionalbusiness advice.

“I would also recommend speaking to and networking with other local business owners and refer customers toeach other if possible. Bluebird beauty currently shares premises with Hair 101 a hairdressing salon located inCullybackey and I have found the help provided by owners Danielle McCallister and Joanna Cameron fantastic.Through sharing premises this has help me develop my skills as a small business owner; we share each other’sexpertise and we also have the opportunity to refer customers to each other’s business.’

Joanne Cameron from Hair 101 stated: “The best thing about being a young self-employed person is the flexibilityit allows, she also enjoys the responsibilities and challenges along the way, two small businesses working togetherhas increased our opportunities to develop our businesses within the Local Area.”

Zoe concludes: “I would recommend Regional Start Initiative to all young entrepreneur’s, a business plan is essentialwhen starting in business and the additional support and advice from a local business advisor helps you buildconfidence to actually get your business of to a flying start.”

3M INNOVATIONBusiness Support

Planning how the business will operate is a critical function of the Management aspect. It answers the why, what, when, where and how questions of a business and sets out the route map for the business to follow. This needs tobe clearly communicated to staff, as they will be responsible for delivering it. Thus the ability to manage People isanother prime area of Management focus. Establishing measuring points across various parts of business providesinformation on the Performance level of the business, which can then be used to gauge how the business isdeveloping.

Market research is about how well you understand the market in which your business operates – your customers, competitors, trends and key issues. The more in depth the information you gather and understand about yourmarket the better business decisions you can take based on factual evidence as opposed to guesswork. Whileintuitive understanding may count for a lot in a local market, it does not extend to an export market for example.Market planning uses market research information to plan how to influence a potential customer segment tochoose your product or service over a competitor, and as such supports the sales function in achieving its projectedsales turnover. This illustrates how both the Marketing and Money aspects are linked together and form part ofan overall business process.

Establishing a financial management system to control money in and out of the business and monitor the profitabilitywhen all costs are accounted for is essential. However, without a focus on the Management and Marketing aspects, this aspect will always fall short of expectation. When a business spends time on the Management and Marketing aspects it is actually laying the foundation forbetter financial results. Think of the tree analogy; if the roots, trunk and branches of the tree are not sufficientlymatured they will not produce the mass of leaves expected. Thus a poorly understood and implemented Managementand Marketing aspect will never produce the financial results expected because the financial performance of abusiness is the result of a series of processes which take place beforehand.
