US oil and gas reserves study2013

Our writers scout for news the old-fashioned way — digging through government agency files, covering legislative hearings, scrutinizing SEC filings and developing contacts within industry and government.

A weekly newspaper, Petroleum News Bakken is published every Sunday.

Similar to its sister publication in Alaska, the Bakken newspaper is written specifically for industry and government readers, plus financial analysts that cover companies with operations in the Bakken play in North Dakota, Montana, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Petroleum News Bakken covers the oil companies working in the Bakken, including all the following topics and more: government oversight and regulation, technical advances in drilling and completion, development and production, exploration and evaluation, transportation and pipelines, finance, research, natural gas processing and marketing, refining and petrochemicals, finance and economics, and the geology of the Bakken petroleum system in the Williston Basin. The newspaper also touches on other petroleum systems in the Williston Basin, such as the Red River.

8 BAKKEN OIL & GAS DIRECTORY • Vol. 3, No. 1

Q. How would you describe the strat-egy that drives your company and howwill you implement it this year?

A. Our strategy is to build a significantposition in a few scalable liquids-richplays, prove that position through thedrillbit and build a large inventory of de-risked, but un-booked locations. Part ofthe strategy also includes divesting of allassets that do not compete for capitaland/or are considered non-core. As weexecute our plan over time, we expect togrow production, reserves and cash flow.

Q. How have high oil prices and lowgas prices affected your business?

A. When we started Halcón we made aconscious decision to focus on oil insteadof gas. By the time we sold Petrohawk, itwas apparent that due to the large, newsupplies from shale gas fields, gas priceswere going to be under pressure forquite some time. We felt like the econom-ics on oil plays were strong and likely tostay that way for the foreseeable future.Since we don’t know what commodityprices will do in the future, we hedge ap-proximately 80 percent of what we ex-pect to produce in order to protect cashflow.

Q. What results are you seeing fromthe modifications made to drilling andcompletions in the Williston Basin?

A. The Company continues to modifyits drilling completions techniques in aneffort to improve recoveries and reducecosts. Based on improved results to date,Halcón has revised the EUR estimateshigher for its type curves. The Companyis now using one average type curve forall Bakken and Three Forks wells drilledin the Fort Berthold area, and one aver-age type curve for all Bakken wellsdrilled in Williams County. In the FortBerthold area, the average Bakken/ThreeForks type curve increased by 39% to801 thousand barrels of oil equivalent(Mboe), while the average Bakken typecurve EUR in Williams County was re-

vised higher by 43% to 477 Mboe.Data suggests that wells completed with slickwater fracs in

the Williston Basin are outperforming wells completed withcross-linked gel, all else being equal. As a result, Halcón plans tocomplete the majority of its future operated wells in the Willis-ton Basin using the slickwater frac technique. All Company-op-erated wells online in the Fort Berthold area that werecompleted via a slickwater frac are outperforming the new 801Mboe type curve.

Additionally, early stage downspacing tests continue to yieldpositive results, and indicate the potential for up to16 locations per drilling spacing unit (DSU) in theFort Berthold area, which would more than triplethe Company’s drilling inventory in this area alonecompared to the previous development plan.

Q. You recently announced the TMS as one of your coreplays. What are your plans for this region?

A. We currently have approximately 307,000 net acres leasedor under contract in what we think is the geologic core of thisplay. Approximately 77 percent of the acreage is located inSouthwest Mississippi and Louisiana Florida Parishes, alsoknown as the “Eastern TMS”. We plan to operate an average of 2rigs for the remainder of 2014 and spud 10-12 gross operatedwells in this play. We also expect to participate in several non-operated wells. We have been working the Tuscaloosa MarineShale from a geologic standpoint and monitoring industry activ-ity in the play for quite some time. Our strategy is to identifyscalable and repeatable resources plays where we feel we canmeaningfully improve the economics by applying our extensivetechnical experience. We believe the TMS fits that strategy, andwe’re excited about our position in the play.

Q. Last year you announced a new play, El Halcón. Whatare your plans for development?

A. We currently have approximately 100,000 net acres in El

Halcón, which is located in East Texas in and around Brazos andBurleson Counties. El Halcón is an extension of the South TexasEagle Ford shale play in which our management team here atHalcón drilled the discovery well in 2008 while at Petrohawk. We’ve identified +/- 1,000 drilling locations. The reservoir is 200’thick with high oil saturation and good porosity. It lies betweenthe Buda and Austin Chalk formations. We have experienced sig-nificant production growth here; going from almost no produc-tion to over 7,000 net barrels of oil equivalent per day in 12months. El Halcón is definitely an area of focus for us. It repre-sents approximately 40 percent of our total drilling and comple-tions budget for 2014. We recently drilled the record well in theplay and hope to translate improvements in well costs and effi-ciencies across all areas of the company.

Q. You have divested or are planning to divest multipleproperties this year. How does that fit within your strategyand impact your plan going forward?

A. Last year we divested properties that had an impact of ap-proximately 9,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day from non-core conventional assets located throughout the U.S. for $450million. Estimated proved reserves associated with these di-vested properties was approximately 23 million barrels of oilequivalent. These were all non-core properties with high LOEand limited upside.

In addition, we expect to close on another divestiture for ap-proximately $450 million related to some producing and unde-veloped assets in East Texas in the second quarter of this year.

It has always been our strategy to sell properties that do notfit our model and reinvest the proceeds into our core areas. Weare always working towards having a tightly focused, qualityproperty set. With these divestments we have become a moreconcentrated oil producer and expect to realize lower operat-ing costs from a more concentrated portfolio.

Q. What is the greatest challenge you face thisyear?

A. Execution is always a risk inherent to the oiland gas business, but we think this risk is mini-mized by our team’s successful track record and

strong history of solid execution. We also believe that technol-ogy will ultimately drive recoveries and economics, which iswhy we invest heavily in our technical team. Halcón is at theforefront of adoption and application of cutting-edge unconven-tional drilling and completion technology to drive well perform-ance.

Q. What is the one thing you want investors to know?A. How far we have come in such a short period of time. Hal-

cón has only been around for two years, and in that time, we’vegrown a $550 million start-up into a multi-billion dollar com-pany that has hundreds of thousands of quality acres in some ofthe most prolific plays in the U.S. We have a management teamthat is experienced, has realized great success for shareholdersin past ventures and is working hard to do so again. We are ontrack to deliver on our strategy. There’s still work to do— delin-eating our acreage, continuing to search for other resource playopportunities and realizing operational improvements—but weare well on our way.

14 BAKKEN OIL & GAS DIRECTORY • Vol. 3, No. 1

Active companiesAttention readers: The following upstream Exploration & Production listings include welloperators in North Dakota and Montana that produce at least 600 barrels of oil per day fromthe Bakken petroleum system, which has a number of geological zones, including ThreeForks. One significant Williston Basin Canada operator, Lightstream Resources, is listed, butwithout daily production because Saskatchewan does not report Bakken well output.

The only non-operators listed in this section are Northern Oil and Gas and PetroShale be-cause of the size of their investments and their involvement in their partners’ operations. The Bakken Oil & Gas Directory is essentially a marketing tool for regular advertisers in Pe-troleum News Bakken — a value-added product, per se. But it is also meant to be of use toPetroleum News Bakken readers, so oil and gas companies, the heart of the activity in any oilprovince, are listed in the directory under Exploration & Production Companies, whether ornot they are regular advertisers in the newspaper.

Associations and government offices involved in the Williston Basin’s Bakken are also listed, whether or not they advertise, as a service to Petroleum News Bakken readers, all of whomreceive a copy of this directory.

The production numbers included in the directory are from October — the latest month re-ported to the states of North Dakota and Montana by most of the companies — and excludeproduction from wells on confidential status. The information comes directly from Petro-leum News Bakken’s analysis of information released by the North Dakota Industrial Com-mission and the Montana Board of Oil & Gas Conservation Commission.

Production from Northern Oil and Gas and PetroShale is not listed because they do not oper-ate any wells and so the aforementioned state agencies do not collect production informa-tion from them. Both companies’ websites, however, are listed herein. It is possibleproduction information (or contacts for more information) is listed on those sites.

All corrections and suggestions should be sent to me, Kay Cashman, via email at [email protected].

NDPC hires consultant to assist with grant proposals

The North Dakota Petroleum Council has hired Habitat Un-limited, a habitat development and consulting firm located inBismarck, N.D., to provide habitat development and professionalgrant writing assistance to wildlife chapters that wish to applyfor grants available through the Outdoor Heritage Fund.

“Hunting and fishing are important traditions for many of usin North Dakota, including those who work in the oil and gas in-dustry,” said Ron Ness, president of the NDPC. “We all agree thatthese are traditions worth preserving, and the Outdoor HeritageFund, which is funded by revenues from oil and gas taxes, is agreat resource for improving habitats and access to the out-doors now and for future generations.”

North Dakota has hundreds of local wildlife chapters thatwork hard to organize fundraisers for habitat improvements, butlike many civic and community organizations, they rely solelyon volunteers who may not have the time or the expertise todevelop projects or meet the requirements needed to receiveoutside grant dollars. Habitat Unlimited will work with chaptersto develop habitat projects and offer professional grant writingservices that will help them access the Outdoor Heritage Funds.

“Our hope is to provide these grassroots organizations with aresource that can help them better capitalize on the resourcesavailable through the Outdoor Heritage Fund and to create proj-ects that will have a meaningful and lasting positive impact forthe outdoors,” said Dave Nehring, president of Habitat Unlim-ited.

The deadline for the next Outdoor Heritage Fund grant pe-riod is Aug. 1. North Dakota grassroots groups and chapters thatlack local full-time paid staff or resources will be given priority.Interested groups should contact Dave Nehring [email protected] for more information.
