Harper’s Bazaar Indonesia, a leading lifestyle magazine, first initiated Bazaar Art Jakarta in 2009. This event soon became an annual boutique art fair with an intimate atmosphere: a gathering of art collectors, local and international art galleries, art dealers, artists and the general public. It is an opportunity for everyone to enjoy contemporary art in the capital city of Indonesia, Jakarta.

Considering that art scenes in Southeast Asia is rapidly growing, Bazaar Art Jakarta aims to focus on this dynamic development of contemporary art in the region. Since 2014, with Leo Silitonga as the fair director, Bazaar Art Jakarta has repositioned itself as an artfair with a mission to generate a platform for art collectors, art lovers, galleries, curators, artists and public in general to share passions and interests on contemporary art and its practice in the Southeast Asia and its surroundings. Hence, Bazaar Art Jakarta’s programs also include series of art talks and discussions on various aspects of contemporary art. This year, Bazaar Art Jakarta aims to generate an engaging and informative discussions among experts, curators, collectors and the public. The discussions cover topics such as collecting contemporary art, the development of digital art, alternative biennales in Asia, the nature of contemporary art collection, as well as gallerists’ perspective on the contemporary art market. This is a great opportunity to gain insights on important details of the most current development in contemporary art, particularly with a strong focus on Southeast Asia. As part of our entertainment program, there will be special performances by prominent Indonesian artists and musicians.

Indonesia, like many other developing countries in the world, continues to struggle with an important issue: the availability of food for its people. The open global trading and today’s technological sophistication – with genetic manipulation (GMO, transgenic) – promise new ways and solutions to avoid food scarcity. But, today’s economic globalization and food technology have brought new problems. From seeds procurement, supporting materials, to knowledge about food technology, are fully controlled and regulated by a handful of multinational companies. Food security of developing countries is dependent on the hand of these companies. This problem is compounded by a variety of possible adverse impacts on the environment – both nature and human – health is also affected by the genetic manipulation process.

Agung Kurniawan highlights and asked this issue in his performance art, titled "Masya Allah, Transgenik!" (My God, Transgenic!). Utilizing the first President Sukarno’s speech on the inauguration of Bogor Agricultural University, 27 April 1952 – this performance is a bitter warning and critic towards the issues of food security in Indonesia, particulary when Indonesia is about to celebrate its 70 years of independence.

Pandai Besi is a unique music collective, an ‘alter ego’ from Indonesian indie band – Efek Rumah Kaca, this music collective was initiated to give room for more experimentation. Pandai Besi reinterprets and recomposes their old materials into a new musical arrangement. Their album, “Daur, Baur”, was included in the “Top 10 Local Release” by Rolling Stone Indonesia magazine. Pandai Besi also collaborates with Tromarama, for their music video. Established in 2006, Tromarama is a renowned artists collective from Bandung, who mainly engage with video art, animation, and installation in their artworks. Tromarama had just recently exihibited their solo show in Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam in June 2015.

In Bazaar Art Jakarta 2015, Pandai Besi will perform a collaborative musical and visual artpiece with Tromarama.
