a variety of serves later). 5. Show the lines by having someone stand on each side and end lines, then point out that the service court for doubles is short and wide. (Make sure everyone knows the lines!) http://www.badminton-information.com/how-to-play-badminton.html 6. Have 4 people go to each court and sit. When all are seated, have 1player at each court sit on the doubles court lines (1 on each end and 1 one each sideline). Walk around and have them point out the service court line. When they can, have person go and get 4 racquets and 1 birdie and begin rallying. 7. While they are rallying, walk around to help. 8. Call all back together at one court to talk about and demonstrate the the 3 shots in badminton: CLEAR SHOT: a. overhead-fore or backhand b. underhand-fore or backhand: The idea is to clear the birdie high and long and move your opponent back. -For overhead clear, contact birdie as high as you can and ahead of your body. Hit hard, rotate wrist and follow- through. -For underhand clear, turn opposite shoulder to net, cock wrist back, contact with racquet pointing forward and upward, and follow-through with elbow bending. DROP SHOT: a. short drop-underhand or overhead

b. "hair pin" or net drop-under or overhead: The idea is to just drop the birdie in short to catch opponent off-guard or too far back. -For underhand drop, keep wrist cocked, have no follow-through, gently guide it over, don't pop -For overhead drop, again, no follow-through, just gently guide it downward. SMASH: The idea here is to smash the birdie down hard and fast. Contact the birdie ahead and in front of body, arm extended. Racquet should be flat and facing downward. Wrist and forearm rotate quickly, hit it hard with a downward angle. Should use this shot if you are close to the net. (If you are too far back, it will go into the net!) 7. After a demonstration of these shots, have players go back to courts and continue to rally trying these 3 shots.   DAY 2: 1. Fitness warm up and stretch. 2. Have students get 4 to a court and warm-up with a rally 3. Call students to come sit back in the middle and go over rules: 1. Begin the game with a rally. After it goes over 3 times play until there is a fault. The winning team may chose to serve or receive. 2. The winner of the rally will most likely want to choose to receive because on the first serve of the game, only l partner gets to serve. For the rest of the game, both partners will serve before the opposite team gets to serve. 3. The first server is always in the right hand court. He must serve diagonally. He gets only 1 chance to get the birdie over the net and inside the service court. (Unless there is a "let" where it touches the net and goes in, in which case you re-serve) He must stand anywhere within his own service court. You must be serving to score. If a point is gained, the server switches places with his partner to serve the next serve. After the first serve of the game, then after the partner in the right court serves until there is a miss, then he hands the birdie to his partner, who serves from the court side he is in. 4. Lines are good. 5. Doubles games are played to 15 points. (must win by 2) (Singles games are played to 21) 6. Racquet or body cannot touch the net at any time. The racquet can follow-through over the net if contact is on own side first. Faults are: -hitting out of bounds -serving into the wrong service court (it must be diagonal) -birdie hitting net and not landing in the service court

-any body part or racquet touching the net -hitting birdie on opponent's side of the net -foot fault on serve 7. If there is a question, replay it. 4. Play a demo game. 5. Game play on own courts. DAY 3: 1. Fitness warm up and stretch. 2. Rally warm-up 3. Call in together for serve talk and demonstrate:

The High Serve: High serve is mostly used in singles. A good high service must be high and lands in between the two baselines at the rear court. Malaysia's former legendary player Eddy Choong had one of the best high serve during his time. The shuttle would go up very high and very deep. When it came down, you had to stand at the edge of the rear court to retrieve it. If you smash, you would probably hit the feathers.

The high serve is considered as a defensive serve because it gives the player sufficient time while the shuttle is high up on the air. It will put you in a less vulnerable position. One of the advantages of this serve is that it forces your opponent back to the base line and open up his court. The Low serve: The low serve are used when a player wants to attack. Most attacking players in singles uses the low serve because they have to keep their shots low so that it will open up an opportunity for the kill. The low serve is also used when your opponent's attack is strong because they will have less opportunity to attack when you keep the shuttle low.

Doubles player often uses this serve to force their opponent to lift up the shuttle. Most of the experienced players use the low serve when the speed of shuttle is fast. It is also better for players to use the low serve when they are actually playing in an air conditioned hall with the drift effect as it will reduce the chances of serving the shuttle out. Backhand serve: Backhand serve employs more wristwork compared to the forehand serve. You just need to flick a little bit of your wrist in order to produce a low backhand serve unlike the forehand serve which players use other parts of their arm as well.

It can be a very effective serve as the stroke execution is fast. Players don't need to do much movement in order to produce a backhand serve. Top players such as Indonesia's Ricky Subagja and South Korea's Park Joo Bong do it so well. Before you can even blink, the shuttle has arrived. The backhand serve is commonly used in today's modern singles game especially in Men singles. Most

men singles players use this serve so that they will have more opportunities to play an attacking game right from the start. The Drive serve: Drive serve is one of the variations to the high serve and the low serve. This is an attacking serve that can be used in both singles and doubles. However, it is rarely used so that it avoids opponent to anticipate the serve.

Some players like to shorten their grip to gain more control over their rackets such as Indonesia's top player Chandra Wijaya and Sigit Budiarto. This service can be used when your opponent's overhead position is unguarded. The Flick Serve: The idea of this serve is to get the shuttle quickly past your opponent and give him less time to play his shot. The shot's options that can be returned by the opponents are limited. It will produce the best results against an opponent that doesn't have good reflexes and bad concen-tration level. However, do not use the flick serve too often as opponent will be able to anticipate it.

It is important for you to master the badminton serve. The lack of quality of your badminton serve may affect the improvement of your game. 4. Game play-King’s Court. This is a great game because like players end up playing each other. King's Court Rules: -play for a time limit or final score, whatever comes first. -when you blow the time whistle the team that wins, rotates towards the King’s Court. -other losing team rotates the other way. -winners in Kings Court stay there, losers in the lowest court stay there. -Here is an example for a gym with 6 courts:

DAY 4: 1. Fitness warm up and stretch. 2. King’s Court game play continues. (make sure they know the lines and how to score! Teacher may even want to walk around and grade play) DAY 5: 1. Fitness warm up and stretch. 2. Hand out study guide and tell students when written test on lines and rules will be. (if you want to give the written test) 3. Game play continues. You can start a tournament if you want. Partners can decide if they want to play in the “pro” or “rec” bracket. This way game play is more even and fair. If you want to just have a round robin tournament where all teams play each other and keep track of win /loss records, just set it up with the # of teams you have and move one side down each time like this: (try this website to set up your round robin: http://www.printyourbrackets.com/roundrobin.html

Other ideas for this unit include: -Singles play: Lines are narrow, service court is narrow and long, and server serves R from the court when score is even and from the left court when score is odd. -Written study guide and test. (see document) -Badminton  Four  Square

Students will be in teams of two for this game. Each game will have 4 teams (8 students total). The nets need to be set-up to make an X with for equal squares and all nets should be hooked to center pole. One team will start with the shuttle and can serve to any other team or square. That team must return the shuttle but they may return it to any team or square. There are no restrictions on what square you must hit the shuttle too. Every team is only allowed one hit to get the shuttle over the net and to someone else’s square. If a team misplays a shuttle and the shuttle ends up out of bounds, the last team to hit the shuttle successfully will start the serve.  Modifications:    Squares  can  be  numbered  1-‐4  and  square  #1  will  always  start  the  serve.    If  a  team

misplays  a  shuttle  they  will  go  to  square  4.    Can  also  play  with  more  than  one  shuttle  or  one  player  on  each  court.

Stroke As Determined By Bird Flights 1. Drive-A powerfully hit forehand or backhand stroke, which just clears the net. It is a difficult shot to return because the shuttle’s trajectory is a straight line. 2. Clear-The clear is a strike, which sends the shuttle high over the opponent’s head and drops near the backcourt boundary line. It may be hit with an overhead or underhand stroke and may be used for offensive or defensive. 3. Smash-The stroke is a hard hit overhead stroke with a fast downward path. It is a chief attacking stroke. 4. Drop Shot-The shot is one in which the shuttle is stroked over the net so it drops very close to the net. Basic Strokes 1. Serve-*Long Serve-Use a long back swing to sent the bird into opponent’s back court but within serving area. **Short Serve-Use a deceptive stroke with a flat arc so the bird skims the net and drops into the court near the service line (preferably in the corners). 2.
