Hi Times Issue 1 Vol. 104 October 2012 6 College GO! Week kicks off By Taylor Simon Staff Writer College Go! week is a huge event for seniors at La Porte High School. They work hard all year long and have a chance to visit any college they would like to apply to later on. It happens every year and most seniors take the opportunity to experience college life. “Most colleges have on-going student visitation opportunities throughout the year in addition to College Go! week,” said Mr. Wiley, a guidance counselor. “Students typically visit private or public schools nearby.” There is an array of colleges that students choose to visit: Purdue, Indiana State and Notre Dame. It mostly depends on what the student feels is the right choice for them. “It’s important for students to apply to college,” said Wiley. “We recommend seniors apply before Nov. 1. So anything that helps or encourages students to apply is very good.” It provides a positive learning experience, ample opportunities and an easier gateway to college life. It has been very helpful to seniors and most are hoping it gives them a great, fulfilling experience. Everyone is hoping that this years’ College Go! week will be even more successful than previous years, showing how rewarding this program can be for our 2013 senior graduates of LPHS. The supply of seafood from that area drastically decreased. “I went to a restaurant and tried to order lobster but they were all out,” said senior Maria Sobecki. The tropical storm also sent storms and tornados throughout the northwest. “I was trying to go to the beach because I finally got a day off but when I checked the forecast, I noticed it was going to rain,” said senior Ian Downs. There were a few days where the Northwest was hit with rain, then a few weeks later residents were hit again with a rise in gas prices. “I paid $4.10 for a gallon of gas,” said Kayla Wurster, a senior. “It was really irritating because I hate spending my entire pay check on a tank of gas.” Although the citizens of LaPorte did not feel the destruction of the hurricane directly, many were still affected by it. “I think it’s important that students are aware of what happened down there,” said Sobecki. “In the end, I am happy we don’t have to experience hurricanes- it doesn’t seem like fun.” Coastal residents of Louisiana endure damage of hurricane photo provided by William Lott The bacon sundae from Burger King is one of the latest bacon inventions.
