LiteracyLiteracy classes are also based on performance level. Literacy incorporates writing, reading, spelling, phonics, and grammar. In 4th grade, all students develop writing skills through Lucy Calkins’ Units of Study as well as the 6 +1 Traits of Writing. These are infused into Writer’s Workshop in which students write every day and continually work through steps in a writer’s process. Genres include fiction, non-fiction, poetry, biography, and others.

HomeworkHomework is an integral part of a student’s development as a learner. Your child may have between 30 to 60 minutes of homework per day. If the time spent on homework is routinely exceeding this range, then an appointment should be scheduled to meet with a teacher to discuss and evaluate strategies used in doing homework (both in school and at home). It is a good practice to set aside a specific time and designated place for homework each day. Homework is generally due the following day, unless specifically noted by the teacher. It is the student’s responsibility to turn in their assignments completed and on time. Thus, telephone calls home will be kept to a minimum.

If a child has been out ill or for other reasons, it is preferred that they be allowed to recuperate. Ideally, this would improve the quality of their work and their understanding of the material missed. Missed work will be detailed for them upon their return.

Students who appear to have little or no homework over the course of several days should be questioned.

RecessPlease be sure your son or daughter is dressed appropriately for physical education and outdoor recess. All children must go outside for recess. It is essential that they wear boots and warm clothing in the winter months.

CommunicationParent support and participation are very important. It is our hope that your child will see education as a partnership between themselves, their parents, and their teachers. Yet, they must take an ever-increasing responsibility for their learning in order that they may obtain their highest potential. For this reason, we encourage them be present for any conference, and that they be encouraged to call or speak with each of us about questions, comments, or concerns.

Appointments for your ChildIt is best to schedule doctor and dental appointments at the following times:

9:20 am – 10:10 am Specials11:45 am – 12:35 pm Lunch and Recess

Teacher AppointmentsIf the need arises to contact your child’s teacher, the best appointment times are 7:30 am and 2:45 pm. Please request appointments in advance. If a concern can be handled with a phone call, please call between 7:30 am and 8:00 am or during specials. Our school phone number is (317) 846-3086. If we are unavailable at the time you call, you may leave a voice mail message through ParentLink at (317) 571-4080. We are also able to respond to e-mail messages faster than voice mail. Feel free to e-mail us at any time and we’ll get back to you as quickly as possible.

BehaviorNorms: Do the right thing.

Treat people right.

Expectations: (1.) Students should learn and work together.(2.) Students should be positive and successful.(3.) Students should be responsible and respectful.(4.) Students should be creative problem solvers.(5.) Students should grow as communicators (speaking & listening).(6.) Students should contribute to their school and world.(7.) Students should be prepared for life’s challenges.(8.) Students should be enriched by the arts and technology.(9.) Students should set goals and strive to achieve each.

Parent InvolvementThere are many opportunities for parents to become involved. Parents with specialty areas can teach or share their expertise with our students. Working with students to review or practice a skill is another way to become involved. Many parents create bulletin boards, make copies, and chaperone field experiences. Please contact the teachers if you are interested in volunteering.
